Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Schwede66 (talk | contribs) at 22:17, 2 January 2024 (→‎Errors with "In the news": Reply). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 00:09 on 8 August 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Could we add magnitude to the earthquake? Without it, reads bland and meh-like given frequency of Japanese earthquakes. Brandmeistertalk 20:22, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I was surprised by the lack of magnitude, too. Does someone know the context for that decision? Schwede66 20:24, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We haven't been putting magnitude on for ages, it's a fairly meaningless number to most people. It replaced a Chinese earthquake that didn't have the magnitude. Stephen 22:21, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, interesting. Having lived through some 20,000 aftershocks, those numbers are rather meaningful to me… Schwede66 22:24, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Brandmeister, Stephen, and Schwede66: We could reword the blurb to "Japan's largest earthquake since 2015 strikes the Noto Peninsula of Ishikawa Prefecture, leaving 57 people dead"? That would convey the severity of the quake without using magnitude numbers. Ed [talk] [OMT] 18:16, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That’s mentioned in the lead only and it’s not referenced, which is a showstopper. Schwede66 18:29, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Schwede66: Well, that's a fair point. I've removed that line from the article and added better info to the body. Reliable sources don't seem to mention the 2015 earthquake in their "major earthquakes to hit Japan" lists (e.g. Reuters), probably because it didn't impact the Home Islands + struck well offshore/underwater + caused little damage and only a few injuries. So based on them it seems fine to say it's the largest to hit mainland Japan since 2011. Ed [talk] [OMT] 18:55, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've had a go at rewording this, Ed. Schwede66 21:20, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Frankly, I learned what an earthquake magnitude is in my teens and it's used quite frequently in news outlets. If for most of our readers magnitude isn't meaningful, that's a pitiful situation... Brandmeistertalk 21:59, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I suggest that you start a discussion about this at Wikipedia talk:In the news, Brandmeister. This isn't the right place to nut out policy or practice. Schwede66 22:17, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Errors in "Did you know ..."

  • The Jiang Ge entry is troubling me. While I would say it is not interesting as phrased, it seems to be further problematic: in its vacuity, it seems to welcome implications that are both icky and potential BLP violations (of a non-notable person, that being the roommate.) I don't want to disparage work fellow editors do, but I really feel this entry should be quickly rewritten at a bare minimum.
