Wikipedia:Pages needing translation into English

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Jarkeld.alt (talk | contribs) at 03:04, 13 March 2016 (Translation from Malasian requested on Razali Endon (TW)). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

This version of Wikipedia is written in English (see Main Page#Wikipedia languages). With this being said, this page is a place to list foreign language articles on the English Wikipedia, to see if they can be translated before they are listed on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. If someone speaks the language the article is written in and can state that it is not worth translating, the item should be moved to AfD or tagged with {{prod}}.

If an article has been listed here for two weeks and is still untranslated, it should be nominated for deletion.

Standard procedures

If you are here for the first time and have an article in a language other than English or a poorly translated article that you wish to list here to forestall possible deletion, you should start by finding the most appropriate template from among the ones listed at Wikipedia:Template messages/Translation and add it to the article page, save the page, and then follow the instructions in the banner on how to list the article here. You might need to click '[show]' to see all the instructions.

If you want to ask for a translation into English of an article from another language's Wikipedia, go to Wikipedia:Translation.

Listing a page here

Most pages get listed here by subst'ing a {{Needtrans}} template, following the instructions given at any one of several translation-related templates that are added to the article page. Many of the templates found at Wikipedia:Template messages/Translation propose adding the corresponding article here. See section Translation template usage below for details of the templates available for use on the main article page.

Other ways to find articles for inclusion on this page are:

Tagging

If the article is a mere copy of (all or part of) an article in another language's Wikipedia, it can just be tagged with {{db-foreign}} to get added to Wikipedia:Candidates for speedy deletion: we want to discourage people who cut articles from one Wikipedia and paste to another without translating. You can leave a message on the contributing user's talk-page in their own language, using the templates from WP:PNT/Templates for user talk pages or using {{UE}}; this will point them to the appropriate Wikipedia in the language they used.

Replacement and restoration

Sometimes, legitimate articles are replaced by content in other languages. In this case, the last English-language version should be restored from the history.

In addition, you may leave a message on the user's talk-page as indicated above.

Notification

When listing a page here, you might want to find the Wikipedia:Embassy, Ambassador, or Wikipedia:Local embassy member of the Wikipedia that relates to the language the article is in and invite them to move the page to their own Wikipedia. If you don't even know what language the article is in you could use Language recognition chart, and if that fails, some language identification web site, such as Xerox or What Language Is This? to find out. If you have come here from another Wikipedia, please note on this page what you think should be done with the article.

Deletion

If an article has been listed here for two weeks and is still untranslated, it should be nominated for deletion. (See also Guide to deletion.)

Articles that are not in English are still subject to all other forms of speedy deletion should they meet the criteria, and can be nominated for deletion by prod or afd should an editor feel they warrant deletion for a reason other than the language it is in, an article not being in English is not itself a criterion for deletion until the two week period has passed. Also, articles in other languages are still subject to blp prod.

After translation

When a page listed here has been translated, its entry should be removed (or moved to section Cleanup if the translation needs another pair of eyes).

There are also procedures to follow at the Talk page of the article itself; see template {{translated page}} and Wikipedia:Translation#How to translate.

Boilerplate text

Various templates are available to tag the article page needing translator attention, and one template is available for use here at WP:PNT.

The following templates are available to tag articles with translation issues in preparation for listing the article at WP:PNT:

  • {{notenglish}} – "This page is written in a language other than English..."
  • {{cleanup-translation}} – "contains translated text and needs attention..."
  • {{hidden translation}} – "an earlier translated version may have introduced errors of fact..."
  • {{rough translation}} – "may have been generated by a computer or by a translator without dual proficiency"
  • {{translate passage}} – "A passage needs to be translated from Language into English"
  • {{not English inline}} – "[needs Eng. translation]" after a phrase

The following templates are available for use at WP:PNT to list an article here that has a translation issue:

These templates, and other templates relating to translation issues outside the scope of WP:PNT can be found at Wikipedia:Template messages/Translation.

Templates for article pages

One of the following templates should be used at the top of the article page:

Not English

Template {{not English}} (alias: {{notenglish}}) is available for a page that needs translation in its entirety (so it would be appropriate to delete if not fixed):

1. Use the notice {{notenglish|NameOfLanguage}} if you know the language used, or {{notenglish}} if you cannot identify the language of the page in question.
2. Add a mention to the list of pages needing translation, using {{Needtrans}} as detailed below.
3. You may also choose to warn the contributing editor with {{uw-english}}, the "use English" warning, or suggest submitting it to a different language Wikipedia with {{contrib-xx1}}, where xx is the language code (see available templates). An alternate template for identifying the article as having been listed here is {{uw-notenglish}}.
Bilingual versions of this template have been created for Norwegian, Spanish, Polish, and French. See the note on these at {{uw-notenglish}}.

Not English section

If there is just a section that needs translation:

1. Use the notice {{Not English|NameOfLanguage|section}}, with the word "section" as a second unnamed parameter at the beginning of the non-English content.
2. Add a mention on this page, as above.
3. You may wish to place a note on the talk pages of contributors of non-English material, saying that English Wikipedia is meant for English-language content, inviting them to translate it, and, if appropriate, suggesting the location of the Wikipedia edition for the language in question should they wish to post content in that language.

Cleanup translation

Template {{cleanup translation}} (alias: {{cleanup-translation}}) is available if the article has been translated, but needs attention from someone approaching dual fluency in both languages:

1. Use the notice {{cleanup-translation}}.
2. Add a mention to the translation cleanup section.

Hidden translation

Template {{Hidden translation}} is available if the article was translated at an earlier point and contained factual errors, while subsequent edits fixed up the English without fixing the errors of fact. The article now looks good and not "machine-translated" anymore, but the original errors of fact are still there, papered over with a facade of good English.

1. Use the notice {{Hidden translation}}, for example, {{Hidden translation|lang-name|version-nbr}}
2. Add a mention to the translation cleanup section, using the provided {{Needtrans}} invocation.

Rough translation

Template {{rough translation}} is available if the article has been translated, but it looks to be either a machine translation or by someone who doesn't have a good command of the target language, and needs attention from a translator; more than just copyediting is required.

1. Use the notice {{rough translation}}, for example, {{rough translation|German|Deutsch}}.
2. Add a mention to the translation cleanup section, using {{Needtrans}} as detailed below.

Translate passage

Template {{Translate passage}} is available for articles that are primarily in English, but have a brief section like a quotation, poem, excerpt, etc. in another language, that needs translation.

1. Use the notice {{translate passage}}, for example, {{subst:Translate passage|ArticleName|language=LanguageName}}
2. Add a mention to the translation cleanup section, using {{Needtrans}} as detailed below.

Templates for use here

Once you have tagged the article page with one of the templates above, the banner that appears will provide instructions on using a template to add an entry to the list of pages needing translation (titled "Pages for consideration") using the {{Needtrans}} template or the translation cleanup section (titled "Translated pages that could still use some cleanup") :

Translation request

Template {{Translation request}} (a.k.a., {{Needtrans}} ) is available for use in the list of pages needing translation.

Follow instructions at the expanded banner generated by {{Rough translation}} or {{Cleanup translation}} to place {{Translation request}} at the bottom of the cleanup section at WP:PNTCU. Sample invocations:

{{subst:Needtrans |pg=Wilhelm II, German Emperor |language=German}} ~~~~

For those pages written in a foreign language, please also consider also placing

{{subst:uw-notenglish |1=Template:not English}} ~~~~

on the talk page of the author.

Dual fluency request

Template {{Dual fluency request}} (a.k.a., {{Duflu}} ) is available for use in the translation cleanup section.

Follow instructions at the expanded banner generated by {{Rough translation}} or {{Cleanup translation}} to subst template {{Dual fluency request}} onto the page at the bottom of the cleanup section. Sample invocations:

{{subst:Dual fluency request|pg=Wilhelm II, German Emperor|language=German}} ~~~~

Pages for consideration

If you are not completely sure of what language an article is written in, check the language recognition chart.
If you are sure, consider placing the corresponding template on the creator's talk page.

The bio content was added with this revision of 22 January 2014], by User:Kergourlay. That user did do quite a lot of cleanup to other sections, so perhaps just forgot about it. I'll have a go but I often get stuck with specialist musical terms. Si Trew (talk) 16:34, 8 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I worked on this a bit but this is strictly a pro bono project for me, please do not let what I have done make anyone feel shy about picking it up. I am pretty tired of Breton harps right now, and by the way, took a look on Commons for a picture and did not find one, so there's a project for someone if someone wants. Elinruby (talk) 23:32, 7 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I don't understand what you mean by it being "strictly a pro bon project for me", you think the rest of us get paid for it? Si Trew (talk) 14:02, 10 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Not at all. I just need to periodically remind myself that these translations are not paying the bills. I do them as a service for the public good. As I am sure most of the rest of you do as well. I have run into paid editors, but not in the area of translation, at least not on this kind of article which is or primarily cultural interest. I am more or less bilingual, but only moderately interested in Breton harps. In other words, if you can improve my translations, please do. 207.47.13.214 (talk) 22:09, 23 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That's a very nice way to put it. Thank you for that. For myself, I am only interested in a harp if it has Guinness written above it, but I think we made a good stab at making it better. Si Trew (talk) 00:15, 21 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

February 2015

The initial language of this article was French. bad machine translation from travel guide. Once english is made comprehensible will require a re-write for style and tone. I got about 2/3 through a first pass of deciphering. Will require enough knowledge of French to refer to the page on that wiki; it's almost incomprehensible Elinruby (talk) 13:12, 4 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Elinruby, looks like you're doing a great job over there. Have a question for you, and other experienced translator/copy-editors seeing this comment, namely: is there a standard way to leave a "pointer" or other indicator of how far you have gotten, or otherwise to apportion translation/copy-edit tasks among more than one editor?
I looked at this article and it's quite long; jumping around in it, I can see edited portions that are good now, and other sections that range from okay to poor, and it's easy to see which those are, but the article is so long, I don't wish to spend tons of time reading the whole thing just to assess which parts still need work. Not to mention the fact that I don't wish to barge in on the first "poor" section, and end up with an unintended edit conflict with you. Any ideas from anybody on how best to do this? As a first guess, I'm thinking a section on the Talk page of the article itself to discuss how far one has gotten, or alternatively, "I plan to translate sections X through Y next" or something. I'd be happy to help out on this article, but don't wish to duplicate effort or step on your toes. Thoughts? Mathglot (talk) 21:58, 7 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Mathglot, if you are interested in picking up on the article, I couldn't be happier; I put it back on the list recently when I realized that I took it off when I started work on it, intending, at the time to finish it, but as you say, it is very long and while my French is quite fluent I don't have any particular background in architecture, let alone religious architecture, in either language. I was worked on several articles on this as a public service back when I was sick and unable to work, and picked this one because I was rather saddened by the comment that it was incomprehensible, which indeed it was. It does seem to be an important landmark, but I have since gotten quite busy and have other translation projects I have also not finished and am more personally invested in. If you do not pick it up and nobody else does either, I will try to get back to it, but meanwhile yes, it still needs considerable help as of about 2/3 of the way through and after that will still need a re-write for style as it was almost certainly a machine translation of a French-language guide book. I'll come back and give a precise indication of where to pick on on translation per se. Elinruby (talk) 19:50, 8 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
My translation-improvement effort stops in the section after "side walls" in Archtecture:Exterior. I worked on that section a bit, I think, but there is an incomplete sentence and I do not have time to go research what it is in fact supposed to say. And @Mathglot, thank you for bringing a template to my attention, possibly it does apply and if so I will try to put it on there anon ;) Elinruby (talk)
Yeah, lots of specialized vocab, it's slow going. Did a few subsections, not sure how much further I'll take it. I may update sporadically as I have the time. Left breadcrumbs in the History so you can see pretty exactly what I've done. Mathglot (talk) 02:35, 13 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly the right way to do it, @Mathglot:. Church articles are really hard, how one does translate virginals for example? It's very hard. Thou art my downsitting and my uprising, it is kinda impossible to translate it properly. I think the difference between the Roman catholic and Protestant traditions makes it harder, too. Someone seems to have worked on this. I only skimmed superficially but this does not look bad at all. One comment, if someone wants a nice manageable task, is that a lot of the red links for other Canadian musicians do in fact have wikipedia pages on the french wikipedia, so changing these to interlanguage links by adding a language code might make them more likely to un-redify. I may possibly come back to this as I am interested in the Canadian part but it won't be soon so don't let me stop anyone else meanwhile. Elinruby (talk) 21:49, 29 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

On what basis do you think this article created in 2006 is a translation? I see no article in the sidebar that could have been the origin of it, not the article in the Newar language of Nepal, the most likely suspect. It appears to have been written by someone not native in English. Mathglot (talk) 22:43, 27 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Article in the Korean wikipedia is at; gan:春城_(朝鮮人), and it is not updated and very short, 1KB. So this artcile might be translated from multiple sources on the web and edited, using external link such as http://terms.naver.com/entry.nhn?docId=529697&cid=46648&categoryId=46648. I used machine translation to see the content of the link. --Omotecho (talk) 18:37, 13 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The initial language of this article was Azerbaijani. It was translated from az:Azər Zeynalov. The text needs clean up for idiomatic English. In addition, many of the titles and non-Azerbaijani names remain in their Azerbaijani form, e.g. "Cakomo Puççini "Toska" - Kavaradossi" instead of "Giacomo Puccini, Tosca - Cavaradossi". The initial language of this article was Spanish. Early edits were machine translations of es:Gigantes del Sur using Google Translate. I did some cleanup then gutted and rewrote the prose due to the "essay-like" writing style.diff That last diff has content such as team members and coaching staff that may be useful if it is re-translated from the original, re-written to English Wikipedia standards, and backed up by a reliable source. I still need some help with the "roster" template and with several places marked inline with {{clarification needed}}. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 23:12, 17 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
