Thank you

A big thank you for helping me out so much. Have a lovely Christmas🎄. I'll continue editing in between other jobs. Please continue to find images for me. I can do it when on it's on wiki commons but struggle otherwise. Whispyhistory (talk) 13:27, 23 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, I look forward to many more interesting articles in the new year. Dodding should be on the front page soon, with the Inuit image if we are lucky. Merry Christmas Philafrenzy (talk) 18:02, 23 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Horace Evans, 1st Baron Evans

This looks interesting Horace Evans, 1st Baron Evans. I've started researching. Original article did not show a fair view. Shall we have a go at making it better? No hurry. The Journal of medical biographies has some good images. Happy for anyone else to add. Whispyhistory (talk) 08:28, 24 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have added a fair use pic. I think you have been watching The Crown. Have you seen this: http://www.standpointmag.co.uk/node/2446/full ? Philafrenzy (talk) 15:45, 24 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
thx.. no I haven’t seen this but looks interesting. Yes... the crown is fantastic. Thank you for image. Whispyhistory (talk) 18:59, 24 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
more complicated than I thought. Will read around before adding anything further.Whispyhistory (talk) 19:19, 26 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Articles for Creation Reviewing

Hello, Philafrenzy.

Purge to update

I recently sent you an invitation to join NPP, but you also might be the right candidate for another related project, AfC, which is also extremely backlogged.
Would you please consider becoming an Articles for Creation reviewer? Articles for Creation reviewers help new users learn the ropes of creating their first articles, and identify whether topics are suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia. Reviewing drafts doesn't take much time but it requires a good understanding of Wikipedia inclusion policies and guidelines; currently Wikipedia needs experienced users at this task. (After requesting to be added to the project, reviewing is not mandatory. One can do it at their convenience). But kindly read the reviewing instructions before making your decision. DYK for The Doctor (painting)

On 30 December 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article The Doctor (painting), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/The Doctor (painting). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, The Doctor (painting)), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. this article was great because of you. Whispyhistory (talk) 20:18, 30 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much but you are too modest. It was your idea, I would never have spotted it. Either way, it is a great contribution to the encyclopedia! Philafrenzy (talk) 20:54, 30 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Tom Cox (highwayman)

On 31 December 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Tom Cox (highwayman), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. • I just checked and found that the page got 17,442 hits yesterday. That's an excellent score and the hook certainly attracted my attention too. Well done! Andrew D. (talk) 09:24, 1 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Andrew, and for finding the additional source too, it really needed that. Happy new year! Philafrenzy (talk) 10:35, 1 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. Nobody ever replied to my comment on the Tyburn talk page that we are not correctly identifying the site of Tyburn village. Philafrenzy (talk) 10:37, 1 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Images

Dear @Philafrenzy:.

I will see what I can do.
  • Also, on your very long list of stubs you created, let me know which are related to medicine. Whispyhistory (talk) 19:37, 2 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Easier said than done, there are over 4,000 and most do not state their profession in the article title. Here's a few from 2017:

This takes it back only to 2 September 2017! Philafrenzy (talk) 20:37, 2 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I think that is all from 2017 excluding biologists, dementia and autism specialists, etc. Philafrenzy (talk) 21:06, 2 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thx, will see who/what interests me - possibly Edinburgh Obstetrical Society next or someone who worked on malaria. I started Clive Lee (engineer) too if you can check. Whispyhistory (talk) 04:53, 3 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Did all the images apart from Pankaj Chandak who is living (you need to meet him and take his picture) and Peter Kerley where there was nothing suitable. If you are wondering why some of them aren't the best, it's because there isn't always a good one available. Philafrenzy (talk) 21:03, 3 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Re Lee - looks sound but you forgot to add any categories. Enable HotCat by going to Preferences/Gadgets if you have not already. I generally always start the talk page too by adding one project - bio or medical work here. Your lead in a longer article like this (above a stub) should stick to who he is and why he matters. The second sentence of the lead is confusing and too long and seems to combine two points. Philafrenzy (talk) 21:22, 3 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I seemed to have missed reading this message. Sorry. I had another look at list above- Clifford Brewer. I found one biography but not sure of reputable source. Lovely story anyway. Whispyhistory (talk) 17:50, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I can bring the obit from The Times tomorrow if you want it. Also Ling. I try to cut them out and keep them. Philafrenzy (talk) 18:12, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
sure. see you tomorrow. Be prepared for lots of questions 🤓 Whispyhistory (talk) 18:52, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, please see discussion at WT:DYK#Prep 2. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 22:19, 3 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Margaret O'Flynn

Margaret O'Flynn becoming interesting. Possibly a hook on way but article needs more work and clarification of some of the pill history. please have a look and add if want. ..... DYK that in the UK, contraception for women was free only to those with four or more children until Margaret O’Flynn campaigned otherwise.???? Whispyhistory (talk) 16:58, 4 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, definitely has potential and I like your hook - a job writing clickbait at the Daily Mail could be yours. There is also the possibility of something around "free love" as that is quite clickable too. Philafrenzy (talk) 00:13, 5 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
🙂I'll look/think bit more. 'free love' sounds good. Whispyhistory (talk) 07:05, 5 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Combines two very popular words certainly. Philafrenzy (talk) 09:54, 5 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't do the dyk....one hook would have required 2 different sources. The source with 'free love' doesn't mention O'Flynn. Its background. Whispyhistory (talk) 20:19, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
What about that "...Margaret O'Flynn pioneered the expansion of family planning provision in the U.K. despite government worries about encouraging "free love"? Might need quite a bit of finessing in the exact wording but why waste it? (P.S. there are still some notable spelling and other errors in the text) Philafrenzy (talk) 22:41, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Whispyhistory: Thanks, you need to add it to the daily list or it won't be reviewed. Also look critically at the text you have added. 10:42, 9 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Just a head's up, somebody created Angel Recording Studios today, which is the same building, so I've changed this article to a redirect. I know this article came first, but the studio article is already better developed. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 17:39, 4 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. Philafrenzy (talk) 19:33, 4 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Edward Dodding

On 5 January 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Edward Dodding, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. Layouts

Dear @Philafrenzy:...This John Hunt, Baron Hunt of Fawley was a stub this morning.

  • I'm not sure I'm doing correct or best way of layout.
  • I did not change the first section/introduction - is it ok?
  • it needs an image.
  • I don't think I've entered quotes correctly
  • I have however entered very useful content and there is more to come.

🙏🏻 Whispyhistory (talk) 21:23, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I will take a look. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:12, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
See Template:Did you know nominations/John Hunt, Baron Hunt of Fawley. Is it ok? You probably have better ones Whispyhistory (talk) 19:47, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Looks OK but you appear to have forgotten to be pithy with the hooks which are both far too long. Alt1 is eye-watering and I have suggested a dull Alt. Nothing stronger as far as I can see. Pity it is only his wife who was Evill. A Dr Evill would have been great. Please add it to the project page or it won't proceed. I will take a look at the article. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:30, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Article looks OK, though the section on the founding is a bit convuluted and could flow more clearly. Quotes are not in italics unless called for by the material such as book names as part of the quote. Long quotes use a blockquote tag which you can see in use now in the article. More here: MOS:QUOTE. The first letter of job titles and similar isn't usually capitalised, e.g. fellow not Fellow, director not Director etc. Please go through and check. Philafrenzy (talk) 00:16, 9 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
amazing, thank you. I'll tidy up Whispyhistory (talk) 06:45, 9 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Blossoms Inn by Thomas Colman Dibdin, 1854.jpg, which is another fine period image. But I notice that it has a watermark and, as this might cause trouble, we should look for a version without one. I have limited time for this myself right now so just letting you know, in case you hadn't noticed it. Andrew D. (talk) 10:08, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I had but find no alternative at present. No doubt it will be corrected in the fullness of time. Philafrenzy (talk) 10:11, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Cherry Marshall

On 9 January 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Cherry Marshall, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. DYK Reviewing

hi...few questions now and more at meet up. I'm reviewing HMS Mantua, new on 9 Jan. Couldn't see any other dyk that interested me. It looks short. I copied readable prose, no infobox/references/headings into character count - character count <1500. Is there an easier way to do this, eg like entering the article name into a tool? Whispyhistory (talk) 11:50, 11 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

There's this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Shubinator/DYKcheck but I don't use it as it looks too complicated for something so simple. I just copy and paste the body text into Word. It's generally obvious if they are too short. BTW Mantua is slightly too short by my count (around 50 characters), and it looks it even without checking. Advise the nominator to incorporate some background info about owners and builders etc into the text. WP:DYKCN Philafrenzy (talk) 12:07, 11 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It could do with tightening and a bit of a polish but I like the hook. I revised it to give it a strong Canadian tone. There's also the possibility of something around being born in Eden but living in Preston, but that might offend the people of Preston. Philafrenzy (talk) 19:45, 15 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Can you help User talk:HelenBynum- They came to wiki event and are keen to contribute: I think I have found a mistake on a wiki page, but I cannot work out to the make a note about this for someone else to check.

If you are sure you can just remove it. Even better, as there does not appear to be an article for the RCH why not start it then you can use the image there? Philafrenzy (talk) 21:18, 15 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
thank you, I may take a look too. Whispyhistory (talk) 05:44, 16 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If you are sure it is the wrong hospital it is better to remove the picture and leave an edit summary of "different hospital" or something like that. Then just make a note of the place where the picture can be found when needed. Philafrenzy (talk) 14:31, 16 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Philafrenzy, just a reminder that you said you'd finish this review "tomorrow" about a week ago; please get back to it when you can.

As a separate note, the date in the article name should ultimately be formatted with an en dash rather than a hyphen: (1807–1878). If the change is made, please let me know, so I can fix the DYK nomination template (which should not also be moved, since that causes far more issues and fixes than doing it in place). Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 16:49, 4 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The article has been moved, and at closer examination you've made so many edits to the article (and proposed the latest hook) that you shouldn't be doing any further review. I've put out the call for a new reviewer, and added a DYKmake for your extensive contributions. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 16:20, 5 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator

What do you think about becoming an administrator on English Wikipedia. I looked through quite a lot of your contributions and they all look very constructive. You also made a lot of articles and got a lot of Did you Know nominations for a lot of your articles. You also made more than 160,000 contributions to Wikipedia and I feel you will do a good job with the tools. Pkbwcgs (talk) 20:59, 12 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for asking Pkbwcgs. I have been thinking about it but am uncertain how to proceed or exactly what admin work I would carry out. Have you experience in this area? Philafrenzy (talk) 22:53, 12 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No. I don't have experience in being an administrator. Pkbwcgs (talk) 15:52, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thank you, I meant in proposing people? Philafrenzy (talk) 15:55, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Pinging Ritchie333 here as he's usually on the lookout for candidates. --NeilN talk to me 16:01, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No. I don't usually propose users. However, I looked through your contributions and I think you will be amazing as an admin. Pkbwcgs (talk) 16:06, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)I, for one, would be enthusiastic about such a candidacy. Have you ever wanted to revdelete an egregious BLP violation? Have ever you wanted to stop a persistent vandal? You don't need to aim to be Wikipedia's most high-profile admin to be an asset. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 16:09, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes to both! How would I proceed? Philafrenzy (talk) 16:14, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I am nominating you. One second... Pkbwcgs (talk) 16:16, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(ec) I've worked with Philafrenzy on lots of articles; I would say he's a better writer on London topics than I am. The ideal job would be working the DYK queues and possibly also patrolling the OTD / ITN / DYK reports on WP:ERRORS. I'm happy to do the full RfA proctological examination if he so wishes. Pkbwcgs, just hold your horses for a minute, or at least show me evidence you have read User:Kudpung/RfA criteria and that he checks all boxes. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 16:20, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Just read them, I would be surprised if anyone met them all to be honest. I would hope it is the overall picture that counts. Philafrenzy (talk) 16:29, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Ritchie333: The candidate check the majority of the boxes but not all the boxes. For example, I found this deletion discussion about an article that Philafrenzy created (I check the archives) and was deleted for not being notable. I also found quite a handful of AfDs but the majority of them were closed as being kept. I will do a full check. Pkbwcgs (talk) 16:31, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Out of 5000 created articles, I wouldn't worry about a couple deleted ones, it is a *very* small percentage. His AfD record of being "correct" is a combined 85% when matching or resulting in "no consensus", which is reasonable. You might want to note if you'd do anything differently at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Tonya Kinzinger or Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Shafy Bello, but it should also be noted his !vote matches consensus much more than it did a few years ago. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 16:44, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) You don't have to meet all of them, I didn't, but you should be able to reasonably explain why you don't meet a couple. If you're ready, Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Philafrenzy can be started, and you can look at the first mandatory questions. It doesn't mean you have to jump off the high dive, or even climb the ladder, you are just looking at the board right now. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 16:37, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Do I create that page? Philafrenzy (talk) 16:39, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
If you want, or I can. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 16:40, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I would be grateful if you would. Thanks. Philafrenzy (talk) 16:41, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I've done enough RfA nominations recently, I think it's time for somebody else to have a go. 78.26, if you want to take the lead on this - go for it. I think people will ask you questions on the handful of articles you created that were deleted at AfD, but provided you respect the consensus (and I see no evidence you haven't) and weighted against the thousands that are absolutely fine, we should be able to work around it. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 16:46, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I would be honored to nominate, but it would be much better if we had co-nominator, in particular since you'd be my first nomination. Have you looked at Wikipedia:Request an RfA nomination? 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 16:53, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
SoWhy may be interested in co-nominating, though I would expect him to do a thorough look at your contributions first. As your name is absent from User:SoWhy/List of declined speedies, it may be possible. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 17:00, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(pinged) Possible but not likely. I do not nominate people I would not support (logically) and I generally do not support users who don't use edit summaries half the time because I find it shows a lack of communication willingness necessary for adminship. Without checking your contributions further, I would advise against running at this time. The fact that you have not read any of the RFA-related pages apparently will likely lead people to assume that you are prone to act hastily (like accepting a nomination that has not even been written). Regards SoWhy 17:11, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That is true. I got a 99.3% record of using the edit summary. Pkbwcgs (talk) 17:20, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Is that stat even right? It is very rare I leave no summary at all, only by accident. Philafrenzy (talk) 17:31, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It seems to depend which tool you use. For example, the Admin Score option of Xtools gives an excellent score for this (Edit summaries 100 133,933 edit summaries used in the article space) My impression is that it depends on the treatment of boilerplate edit summaries like section headings. In practise, I don't consider this to be significant. For example, see the edit history of Ayahs' Home. There Philafrenzy is working closely with another main editor. The edit summaries from both are perfunctory but I suppose that's because they are building the article and so focussing on the text of the article. That's the mindset of a content contributor rather than a drive-by patroller. If they had a dispute or other issue, I supposed they would discuss on the talk page, rather than using edit summaries. But they seemed to get the job done fine without any hassle. Andrew D. (talk) 17:44, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Andrew for pointing this out. On xtools it is 93.9%. No doubt it could be higher and the summary fuller, but I don't think I fail to leave a reasonable summary where necessary or in contentious situations. Philafrenzy (talk) 18:42, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Somebody could do nothing except use Twinkle 24/7 and leave edit summaries every time : "Requesting speedy deletion .... ", "Nominating for deletion .... ", "Caution: Final warning, vandalism on .... ", "You may be blocked without warning the next time .... " - none of those tell you anything about whether somebody is a good admin candidate or not (and from my view it's usually skewered towards "not"). That said, I have made my views on edit summaries well-known here - though Philafrenzy is most definitely not on my list of "people I get annoyed at for not leaving edit summaries". Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 17:49, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I think that edit summaries are very useful. However, sometimes users use misleading edit summaries for actually bad edits. I would be neutral about edit summaries. I think that some users and IPs mislead others thinking that it is a good edit when it is actually vandalism. However, there are pros and cons about edit summaries. Pkbwcgs (talk) 17:56, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I think that stat is a little misleading in the context of creating new articles that are not on anyone's watch list. I only "accepted" in anticipation. The nomination has not actually been made live. I have removed the acceptance until a later stage. Thanks for pointing out it was premature. Philafrenzy (talk) 17:16, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I know what you mean when you are building the article. Most of my edit summaries when the article is in draft mode are utterly inane, because I don't want to type "Building the article" "Still building the article" over and over. I would recommend you address this up front, and promise to never skip the edit summary when acting in an administrative capacity. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 17:24, 13 March 2018 (UTC) That means using an edit summary when replying on your own talk page... looking at history it will require a change in habits, I'm afraid. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 17:26, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly right. I fixed the refs on a new one yesterday that took 45 mins and numerous similar edits and used a boiler-plate CE. Certainly, for others a full edit summary should be given. Philafrenzy (talk) 17:29, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I have faith in you that you will be a good admin. All you need to do is to make sure you use the edit summary most of the time (especially when replying to comments and making mainspace edits). A few mistakes shouldn't stop you from actually being an admin. I am going to support you and good luck in your RfA. Pkbwcgs (talk) 17:33, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it's the overall picture. I didn't meet all of them yet Kudpung said some very nice things in my RFA. --NeilN talk to me 16:42, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Wish you good luck with this! Pkbwcgs (talk) 16:47, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This has just turned blue. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 16:50, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! Philafrenzy (talk) 16:55, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
All you need to do now is to state whether you are accepting or declining the nomination. If you want, you can have some time to think about it. @78.26: Just like in other nominations, can you please state your nomination in the Nomination section. Pkbwcgs (talk) 17:02, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that would be a requirement. However, it would be better if Philafrenzy answers the questions first, then I can better tailor my nomination statement. I don't think we're in a big rush here, I would recommend the candidate give it time for thought. The more complete the answers are, the smoother the election will go. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 17:04, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I have accepted but will work on the answers to the questions over the next 24hrs. Thank you for your advice. Philafrenzy (talk) 17:05, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Your welcome. Pkbwcgs (talk) 17:06, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'll give you a few other tips - Q1 should only be a few areas that you would consider yourself comfortable with. Anything you say here can and will be used against you in evidence questions, so only put down things you are really comfortable with, policy wise. Q2 should be something to do with content - list your favourite GAs or FAs you've worked on. Q3 should show that you can make mistakes and learn from them and is a bit of a balancing act - it needs to be specific enough so people know you're being honest, but not so specific that people can leap on things to oppose with. For example, at my RfA I was concerned that I'd told an admin to fuck off once, and after discussion with Kudpung we went with "I have very occasionally been blunt and direct, but never to new or inexperienced editors." Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 17:17, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. A "full and frank exchange of views". Philafrenzy (talk) 17:19, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Don't get too cute if things like what Ritchie333 described are in your editing history. "[B]lunt and direct" is an accurate description but I wouldn't want someone as an admin who thinks telling someone to fuck off is an "exchange of views". --NeilN talk to me 18:44, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That's why the operative word was "concerned" - language like that is unacceptable from an administrator in my view. I'm pretty sure you've got nothing like that squirreled away in your contributions anyway. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 20:38, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, they aren't. Philafrenzy (talk) 18:49, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Email

I wanted to follow up some details about the edit summaries and thought I might email them rather than adding to the discussion above as it's getting too long. But I find that the Philafrenzy account doesn't have email enabled. Note that per WP:ADMINACCT, "best practices are for administrators to have email enabled" and I seem to recall this coming up in other cases. You'd need to think through your position on this. Andrew D. (talk) 19:08, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It's not a position as such and I have enabled it Andrew. Thanks. Philafrenzy (talk) 19:15, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Any progress on this? Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 15:48, 19 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, thanks for asking Ritchie, I am working on the three questions offline but probably won't start it until after the end of April as over the next month I have too many real world commitments and I want to make sure I am fully prepared and have time to respond to it. CRUs

Hello! On the CRUs page you've flagged an issue with the lead, but I can't see any expansion on why on the talk page... what do you think I should take a look at to improve it? Zeromonk (talk) 16:17, 16 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It's one sentence for quite a long article. It is either a masterly condensing worthy of the Reader's Digest's finest authors or is missing an overview of all important aspects of the article. Philafrenzy (talk) 16:37, 16 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I wondered if there was a specific thing you had in mind or if it was just a general comment - happy to take it as general advice and will have a think what else to include up there! Hope you're well. Zeromonk (talk) 15:52, 19 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, my technique is copy the whole article into a sandbox and then delete all the less important bits then you have the lead. Philafrenzy (talk) 16:00, 19 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Philafrenzy, I saw the discussion here about you going for Admin. Let me know when the RfA is up in April or whenever, and I'll support you. You were very patient and civil considering your status on Wikipedia compared to me as a newbie when doing your DYK just now. However, I will say you should never judge a book by its cover. In my real life, I've been a technical writer for 25 years. It's nice to earn a living for it. But it's also nice to be on Wikipedia and write what you want to write about and have more fun! Either way, best wishes to you getting that admin bump. :)

Sorry, disagree, that user is a paid PR man for the article subject. That needs to made clear in any discussion. Every edit they make is for money and therefore they are inherently unable to take a NPOV. Philafrenzy (talk) 21:55, 16 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on Michael Verey requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Rita Duffy

Hi Philafrenzy,

I'm a bit perplexd why you added a 'lede too short' clean up tag to Rita Duffy. The article is only just long enough for DYK nomination and the couple of sentences in the existing lede seem to be quite adequate to me. If you feele there's something worth adding, please do so, otherwise tagging just seems disruptive to the DYK process. Cheers (and thanks for the other tweaking of the article, which has improved it nicely). Sionk (talk) 20:36, 15 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

According to MOS:LEAD, the lead should "summarize the most important points" of the article. I don't think you can do that in two sentences. Philafrenzy (talk) 20:42, 15 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
So what other important points would you summarise? Sionk (talk) 21:26, 15 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Something about her background which seems very important, where she places herself politically, and that her work is represented in national institutions. You choose. BTW, personally I would move the claim that she is the province's "foremost artist" down into the body. Such claims are highly subjective and don't actually tell the reader anything very useful, but I guess you are using it primarily to support notability. Assessment of new pages

I noticed that you had created The Crumpled Horn and then assessed it for some projects, including WikiProject Wiltshire, on its talk page. People should really not assess their own articles, even as a stub and low-importance, as in this case. It is fine to add the WikiProject templates, but they should be left as unassessed. Someone from each project should then show up and assess the new page. Moonraker (talk) 03:15, 1 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Where is the rule that says that when it is self-evident what level they are? The Crumpled Horn is two lines and so must be a stub because it can't be a start. Philafrenzy (talk) 05:35, 1 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I routinely asses pages that I have just moved to mainspace from Draft, and to which i have made significant contributions, and would feel free to do so even if I were the only contributor, provided that it is at C level or below. I don't normally assign an importance rating unless it is for a project I have been active in. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 03:12, 2 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Agree with that and it's worth noting that most of the projects are dead. One frequently sees old articles without projects and with missing ratings so it's best to do it yourself if it is uncontentious. I also can't think of anyone better placed to assess these matters than someone who is knowledgeable enough to have written an article on a given subject. It's not as if very much actually flows from these ratings at the bottom end. Philafrenzy (talk) 04:28, 2 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 17:10, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello P. I am sorry that you have a misunderstanding about how reFill works. These are formatted by User:Zhaofeng Li/reFill. They may not have everything that you want but they are better than bare links as they are no longer subject to Wikipedia:Link rot. If you do not like them as they are you can either a) enhance them as you see fit or b) restore them to the bare links. If you choose the latter please do not add the bare url tag as anyone else who comes to the page will run the program in the exact same fashion that I did. I'm guessing my post here may not be to your pleasure so please feel free to remove it. Please know that I appreciate your work as an editor and wish you well on WikiP and (more so) off. MarnetteD|Talk 21:25, 12 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I just remembered one other possibility - you can post a request here Wikipedia:Cleanup#June but you will have to be specific about what you want done. Regards. MarnetteD|Talk 21:29, 12 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the explanation but if the program doesn't give acceptable results we shouldn't really be using it. The bareurl tag remains appropriate for as long as they are bare and there are other ways of fixing them, by hand for instance. Really badly formatted refs are not better than bare in my view as they suggest the job has been done when it really hasn't. Philafrenzy (talk) 21:33, 12 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Then you will need to take your concerns to one of the village pumps. You should be aware that reFill has been approved by the community and has been used on hundreds of thousands of articles. Thus, its results are acceptable to the current WP:CONSENSUS of the community. MarnetteD|Talk 21:38, 12 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That fine for when it works well. But if what it produces is clearly rubbish we shouldn't use it on that occasion. There can never have been any consensus to add references that are missing most of the key information integral to a correctly formatted reference such as dates, authors etc. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:05, 12 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Why is a bare URL preferable to a linked title? --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 22:45, 12 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Take ref 3 in PROCESSIONS (artwork). It has been formatted solely with "How to march like a Suffragette this weekend" and lacks author, publication, date, and date retrieved. In other words it lacks everything a good ref should have apart from the title. The purpose of formatting them is not to prevent them from being bare urls, it is to give the full source information for the reference including all of those items (where applicable). As a bare URL there is a chance that it will get fixed correctly. In fact, as bare it actually has more information than the current formatted version as it shows the publication and article title: https://www.standard.co.uk/go/london/arts/processions-how-to-march-like-a-suffragette-this-weekend-a3857011.html Philafrenzy (talk) 22:53, 12 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
OK, so why not use Refill as a starting point and fill in the rest manually? --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 22:57, 12 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I agree Redrose but you need to ask the people using Refill and not checking what it produces. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:02, 12 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
FYI I check each use of the tool. There is no hard and fast rule about what has to be in a cite template. Believe me I have seen cite templates filled in manually that have far less info than in your example. If you insist that there is a problem with reFill and that it should no longer be used than I, again, can only suggest you take it up at the appropriate notice board. MarnetteD|Talk 23:11, 12 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I have no problem with Refill. The problem arises if the user does not look at what it produces and ask themselves if it is reasonably complete or needs additional work. Formatting refs is not about replacing a bare url with any formatted text, however useless. It is about adding the full source information or as much as can reasonably be obtained. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:15, 12 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Where is that written into policy? I have seen others use reFill in the exact same fashion as I have so you really need to take your concerns to the appropriate notice board since we are doing such damage to the articles that it is being used in.MarnetteD|Talk 23:28, 12 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Applying common sense in judging the effectiveness of one's work doesn't really need a policy, but if you insist try WP:COMPETENCE. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:31, 12 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Mine is just fine thanks. As is that of the other editors who are using reFill. So, in closing, no actual policy to back up your complaint then. MarnetteD|Talk 23:35, 12 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

RonBot (talk) 17:18, 12 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

RonBot (talk) 17:15, 14 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. There doesn't appear to be an image online. Philafrenzy (talk) 20:14, 19 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Should it be western medicine rather than modern medicine? Philafrenzy (talk) 20:21, 19 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Great name. Edwardx (talk) 21:49, 19 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It was originally shorter. Philafrenzy (talk) 21:55, 19 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This is what happens when you write articles on dermatologists. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:28, 19 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm going to alter the lead on Chuckerbutty later. Modern medicine was already there but that is what it says in the source. In addition, I'm working on his medical contributions. In meantime, can you think of a hook for dyk? Sounds like @Edwardx: is thinking of one.
  • Will add a bit more to Rook soon too. Keratoacanthoma is still a debatable lesion. Whispyhistory (talk) 08:04, 20 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Still working on Rook. It doesn't actually cite those papers on K and the blistering skin diseases. If we say they are important it should. Philafrenzy (talk) 08:07, 20 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
