(For help, see Wikipedia:Purge) This Conflict of interest/Noticeboard (COIN) page is for determining whether a specific editor has a conflict of interest (COI) for a specific article and whether an edit by a COIN-declared COI editor meets a requirement of the Conflict of Interest guideline. A conflict of interest may occur when an editor has a close personal or business connection with article topics. Post here if you are concerned that an editor has a COI, and is using Wikipedia to promote their own interests at the expense of neutrality. For content disputes, try proposing changes at the article talk page first and otherwise follow the Wikipedia:Dispute resolution procedural policy.
You must notify any editor who is the subject of a discussion. You may use {{subst:coin-notice}} ~~~~ to do so.
Additional notes: This page should only be used when ordinary talk page discussion has been attempted and failed to resolve the issue, such as when an editor has repeatedly added problematic material over an extended period. Do not post personal information about other editors here without their permission. Non-public evidence of a conflict of interest can be emailed to paid-en-wpwikipedia.org for review by a functionary. If in doubt, you can contact an individual functionary or the Arbitration Committee privately for advice. The COI guideline does not absolutely prohibit people with a connection to a subject from editing articles on that subject. Editors who have such a connection can still comply with the COI guideline by discussing proposed article changes first, or by making uncontroversial edits. COI allegations should not be used as a "trump card" in disputes over article content. However, paid editing without disclosure is prohibited. Consider using the template series {{Uw-paid1}} through {{Uw-paid4}}. Your report or advice request regarding COI incidents should include diff links and focus on one or more items in the COI guideline. In response, COIN may determine whether a specific editor has a COI for a specific article. There are three possible outcomes to your COIN request: 1. COIN consensus determines that an editor has a COI for a specific article. In response, the relevant article talk pages may be tagged with {{Connected contributor}}, the article page may be tagged with {{COI}}, and/or the user may be warned via {{subst:uw-coi|Article}}. 2. COIN consensus determines that an editor does not have a COI for a specific article. In response, editors should refrain from further accusing that editor of having a conflict of interest. Feel free to repost at COIN if additional COI evidence comes to light that was not previously addressed. 3. There is no COIN consensus. Here, Lowercase sigmabot III will automatically archive the thread when it is older than 14 days. Once COIN declares that an editor has a COI for a specific article, COIN (or a variety of other noticeboards) may be used to determine whether an edit by a COIN-declared COI editor meets a requirement of the Wikipedia:Conflict of interest guideline.

The author of much of the article is clearly Moriba Jah. Twice under his username, and the bulk of the edits under two IP addresses associated with Austin, TX (where Jah resides), which have both only contributed to Jah's page (since 2009). The page itself has many unsourced anecdotes that are inconstant with a wikipedia biography.

There were previous related threads at WP:BLPN and WP:ANI that are now archived (1, 2, 3, 3 seems COI-only). Editing and spamming the talk page by likely-COI single purpose accounts and sockpuppets is a long term issue at this article (what can be seen at the recently archived second talk page are deduplicated instances of what is commonly posted, which archive page one also shows instances of). One related sockpuppet investigations page that I know of is this one (latest report inconclusive). There currently is an interesting recent "fake-consensus" at the talk page, competing against a legitimate ongoing RFC above. It's always urgent to whitewash, it seems. An editor brought up the first article to WP:RDS. When looking in to it, I was surprised there were 4 different language versions along with the English one for someone relatively obscure. Sure enough a check of the other 4 found they were all created recently. I noticed that the creator of our version Nolime had also created or made new versions of 2 articles as translations. One of them, on a Russian chess club seems to look ordinary. But the other one shows the same dubious history with the Italian version that the new English version came from also created very recently. I have added the user names of the cross wiki creators although only one of them, Rk has any edits here. The current RfC on whether cross wiki info can be referred to has not been closed so hopefully people don't consider it WP:Outing. Nil Einne (talk) 07:11, 8 July 2019 (UTC)

I had been looking into this myself as well, since that RDS post. Ross and Nolim's article creations also have a lot of overlap with pages or drafts that were previously created by known UPE sockfarms, which could just represent the same people hiring multiple people over the years to try and make an article. I think uncovering the full extent of possible connections to other accounts would require someone with global sysop to look at page creations and file uploads across multiple projects. • Mariela Garriga is a mess, cited to blogs, SPSs, her own sites, interviews, and IMDB, etc. Photos all conveniently uploaded to Flickr in the public domain a few days before the Italian wiki article is created.         Doc James: re: cross-wiki issues, I was able to look at data from pt.wiki for this case on CheckUser wiki, and a steward has locked one of them. In addition to hosting cuwiki the foundation has provided us with a cross-wiki mailing list and IRC channel for collaboration between projects, and it normally works quite well. This case is a bit confusing, and I'll analyze it more when I have more time, but MER-C blocked most of the accounts related to this farm already from what I can tell. For a long time, this article has suffered from significant COI-SPA activity from a number of accounts intent on using this article for promotional means - most notably by listing every work this person has ever contributed to. An example of the article in its excessive form is here, before a discography TNT tonight by myself. Going back to March 2018, when I first came across the article, I have challenged this multiple times because I find the list inappropriate because it is unsightly - poorly formatted, overly detailed, promotional, unreferenced. The subject has been a session musician for over 200 songs and I find it wholly unnecessary to list in intricate detail every one here - that seems far more the purpose of Discogs or a personal website. There also seems to be an arbitrary distinction between entries in 'discography' and 'other credits'. I have raised these issues on the talk page and advised the editor(s) of the relevant guidelines but their determination and will to continue adding these discographies does not abate. I appreciate the subject has worked on some significant but having this list in this form is not suitable. As an example, I clicked one and subject did vocal engineering for one track on an album, and that was added as part of the discography. Rayman60 (talk) 23:37, 11 July 2019 (UTC)

In which way you find actual facts "promotion"? The only thing I'm doing is giving to Wikipedia readers factual information that can be proved by accessing to any music related institution, such as PPL/PRS, etc. Just to give you an example, to publish that Bohemian Rhapsody was written by Freddie Mercury would be consider "promotion"? Publish that the Mona Lisa was painted by Leonardo da Vinci in 1503 is for you "promotion"? The only facts I am adding to Fraser T Smith wikipage, is his WORK, HIS collaborations with other artists, the songs that HE HAS produced, written, played an instrument on it, etc. There's nothing on that related to "promote" his actual work whatsoever.

I would like to ask you what is your interest in deleting the facts provided? What do you have against Mr. Fraser T Smith to keep investing your time and other contributors time in erasing this information and deny it to the rest of the world?Inca28a (talk) 13:36, 17 July 2019 (UTC)

If the IP is affiliated with Glass Lewis it seems to be the end of discussion, and all edits that IP made should be reversed. And further, I don't agree with the characterization that his edits removed unsourced information. Thankfully, there's no reason to debate it because the IP is associated with Glass Lewis (like all the other editors), but, for the record, his edits didn't remove information--sourced or otherwise--his edit simply added a more favorable characterization of the events. These two pages have a long history of abuse of Wikipedia as a marketing medium. I've stabilized the situation by applying ECP and handing out sanctions notifications (under WP:GS/Crypto), but these articles need the axe taken to them. MER-C 10:51, 13 July 2019 (UTC)

There's a persistent problem with IP numbers and single-purpose accounts removing controversial info and adding puffery-style content to Kirkland & Ellis. One of these IP numbers, 74.108.49.43, also removed puffery from rival law firm articles,[7][8] which seems to suggest biased motives (even if the puffery should of course be removed from all the articles). Article was created 2010 by ColinA3 and is maintained almost exclusively by said user. ColinA3 updates the article shortly after a new version of the software is available. The last 4 or 5 edits were by the user to update the version number within days of a new version, even though it does not even state a version number on the website. See: [9] and [10]

No mention of association is made anywhere on their userpage or article page and I doubt the person behind the account is a dedicated user. More likely the owner of the company behind verisys.

Saundersashm has twice removed content from the wikipedia entry that the subject would not like people to know about, and replaced with puffery and use of poor sources straight from the website of the subject. Also, incorrectly logged edits to make it sound innocuous. After the first instance, I posted a COI template message on Saundersashm's talk page, warning about COI, I did not receive a response, but then Saundersashm did it again. This is a single use account, has not edited any other page. As per the talk page, there has been a history of COI edits, with the IP linked to a government department (the subject is a politician). I have made some changes to the entry to counter the puffery, to improve neutrality, and present a more well balanced entry. It is not clear what the extent or nature of this relationship is but it has existed for years and seems to still exist now given how hard that particular editor has fought to stop these articles from being tagged as having been edited by connected contributors. I am new to the editing process, so forgive me if I make mistakes. I am Maximilian de Gaynesford, and my user name is Phenomenologuy. A page about me ("Robert Maximilian de Gaynesford") was added to Wikipedia without my knowledge or permission in 2005, and since I have an interest in accurate information being given about me in a public forum, and since the original article and its updates were incorrect, I corrected them myself. In subsequent years, banners have been added to the page at various times to ask for further information to improve the page, and since no one else seemed to be doing this and I was in a good position to do so, I made the necessary improvements myself. Recently, I thought it would improve the information if a photograph of myself were included, and I went through Wikipedia's steps for doing this - in the process, making it quite clear that the picture being uploaded was a selfie. The fact that I did not create the original article explains why the name itself is misleading: I actually go under 'Maximilian de Gaynesford', and if you Google that name, you will find many references to me - they will attest that I am a reasonably well-known philosopher, with a Chair at the University of Reading, four books with excellent academic presses and am invited to present my work regularly at public events, so that there is some justification for the original decision (not mine) to include an article about me on Wikipedia. I have obviously never accepted pay for this editing, and I have neither sought nor received any form of financial benefit through doing it. My sole aim has been to ensure that a page which was created by someone else and without my knowledge should be regularly improved according to the requests and requirements of Wikipedia itself. Firstly I suggest that you read the conflict of interest (COI) guideline, which strongly recommends that editors with a COI post to the article's talk page, rather than directly editing the article. I have added a COI notice to the article talk page. You could also read the guideline on autobiography, which explains how difficult it is to write objectively about oneself. The article has been nominated for deletion, so you could contribute to the discussion if you believe that the article should or should not be deleted. Two things:

• User:Uncle G/On notability#Writing about subjects close to you — This strong advice to not write given in 2006 is tame by today's standards, where some people discourage writing even if one has independent sources in hand.
• If it were just that all of the IP addresses geolocate to the places where the subject works, I would not be concerned, as after all that is information that was being put right into the article. But some of them (including some as far back as 2005) apparently geolocate to the subject's home, residential ISPs in the same towns/cities. The Wikipedia:privacy policy carves out an exemption for this, but I do not think that anyone envisaged a case where Wikipedia would be publicly hosting a 14-year-long record of a biography subject's apparent IP addresses, work and home, as an article's edit history. (And although a few of the IP addresses are clearly not the subject, we know that fools on the WWW often aren't careful enough to check.)

I understand Uncle G's admonition and thank them for their concern for objectivity and factual accuracy, which is precisely what prompted me to correct and update information being made public about me by Wikipedia in an article created without my knowledge or permission. I was quite happy for my IP address to be known - Wikipedia advised me that it would be - whenever I made an edit. I now know there is an alternative way to correct and update information - through the Talk page - which I will happily use in future. • Well if you are happy about the IP addresses, that's something. I am still a little concerned on your behalf. It's an extraordinary situation, and while it is within the letter of the policy it does not seem to me to be in the spirit of it that this is the case. I've not encountered a situation like this before, although as the years accrue no doubt it will happen again, and it may have happened elsewhere that I am not aware of. • I asked Drmies to come here and xe has oversighted several of the recent home IP addresses, leaving the edit contents and summaries visible. This alleviates my privacy concerns here. There are a few edits, such as ones from from Williamsburg in 2005 and 2006, that I suspect to be the article subject too, but given the above I am not going to fuss over them.
  • Phenomenologuy, the best thing that you can do for Wikipedia is write about something else. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Pragmatic maxim has a whole load of citations that never made it onto Talk:pragmatic maxim or even into the article itself as potential further reading. You could evaluate them to see whether they are any good as further reading, on that article or otherwise, or even as sources. You do not have to write prose, but I think that you are in a good position to evaluate the relevance of some books as selected reading materials.
  • The second best thing that you can do is cite biographies of yourself or academic reviews of your works by other people in the field, if you know of any. Author autobiographical blurbs from books do not help, but a proper fully independent biography would. See User talk:Drmies#English Professor Vacuum for one recent example of a subject where there are sources from which to work for both the life and the works for a person. Yes, sometimes one has to wait until one is dead. ☺

Recreation of Billy Carson (and Draft:Billy Carson), a often deleted spam piece from large sock farms, is enough reason to suspect UPE. It was posted at Billy Camrick Carson II even though the sources don't use that name. This page is bombarded with spectacularly bad sources. It dishonestly uses four sources to claim songs made Billboard charts. These sources show current charts (supposedly Retrieved 2019-07-19) and can not possibly verify a claim that some songs charted last year.. duffbeerforme (talk) 03:27, 26 July 2019 (UTC)
