Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by 203.173.186.163 (talk) at 19:05, 5 October 2015 (→‎Remove 1:10 radio-controlled off-road buggy). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 14:15 on 21 May 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems, because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed, determined not to be an error, or the item has rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

  • ... that Ali al-Nimr used a BlackBerry to encourage protests, underwent an unfair trial, and may soon be crucified and beheaded? - If you actually take the effort to look this up, you'll find that, depsite many press reports, there will not be a crucifixion. It will be a beheading and public display of the body, see here for instance. Also, the term "unfair trial" is seriously NPOV. It probably was, but it that something we can say on the main page? 131.251.254.154 (talk) 09:42, 5 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No crucifiction, eh? What a relief. How about "complete travesty of justice" or "display of mindless medieval barbarism"? 20.133.0.13 (talk) 10:10, 5 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Not disagreeing with you in the slightest, but we have standards to uphold here. 131.251.254.154 (talk) 10:21, 5 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, who needs ethics when we've got standards. 20.133.0.13 (talk) 13:32, 5 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
An encyclopaedia is not a tabloid; perhaps tumblr would be a better outlet for yellow journalism. GRAPPLE X 13:35, 5 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You think use of the word "unfair" in the context constitites "tabloid journalism"? 20.133.0.13 (talk) 13:55, 5 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
And I quote, "How about "complete travesty of justice" or "display of mindless medieval barbarism"?". GRAPPLE X 13:57, 5 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
And your view on the word "unfair"? 20.133.0.13 (talk) 14:18, 5 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Remove 1:10 radio-controlled off-road buggy

1:10 radio-controlled off-road buggy is too poorly formed to be on the Main Page. 203.173.186.163 (talk) 17:59, 4 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

That is kind of the point... DYK features recently created or overhauled articles that could use some improvements. -- [[User:Edokter]] {{talk}} 18:30, 4 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You wouldn't guess that from the section's title. "Do You Know" gives no clue that the articles are new and may be of a lesser standard than expected. Maybe this could be improved in the 2015 main page redesign? Bazza (talk) 09:55, 5 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It's actually 2009 IFMAR 1:10 Electric Off-Road World Championship which is on the main page at DYK right now, and I agree, it's awful and despite the idea that DYK should be used to highlight articles that "could use some improvements", I don't think this can really be improved. I agree with the IP that this shouldn't be on the main page, but the DYK process doesn't pay attention to article quality at all. The Rambling Man (talk) 10:02, 5 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
This is one of many problems with the Main Page as a whole. The sections give no real indication of what they actually are. To a reader who is not familiar with the details of each of these little projects a "Today's featured article" would just be an article that we have chosen to feature today, "In the news" would be a news ticker, "Did you know" would be a list of random trivia, and "On this day" would be anything that occurred on this day in history. --Khajidha (talk) 13:47, 5 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
2009 IFMAR 1:10 Electric Off-Road World Championship is just as bad. The Main Page should link to the better articles. 203.173.186.163 (talk) 19:05, 5 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
