Incidentally, Beckhardt's photo was misidentified as Hermann Gilly, so I removed it from the Gilly article. However, as Gilly never flew a Siemens-Schuckert D.IIInor had a personal insignia of a swastika, it is obviously a (poor) photo of Beckhardt.

I hope you will post these, as I seem to be moderately hopeless at the task.

I have no ambition to get you blocked for this. I don't think it is a smart move to test the boundaries of your restrictions though. Doing such things too often or too blatantly will get you blocked again, and for a longer time, and also reduce your chances of getting the restrictions lifted or modified. Arbitration enforcement is not meant to be a punishment, it is designed to remedy a specific problem, which was uploading questionable content. No, our policies are meant to prevent copyright violations. Restrictions are meant to save people the effort of having to check every edit an editor makes to see whether it violates our policies. "You are not allowed to upload questionable content" (or "to link to copyright violations", and so on) are policies which apply to everyone. "You are not allowed to upload any files" is a restriction which is much more strict, and which only applies to you. Claiming that if an upload (or article creation, or whatever) doesn't violate our policies, it should be allowed, is ignoring your restrictions. Fram (talk) 15:45, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Then take it to arbitration, so it can be made clearer. I can see that it is bothering you greatly, so have it cleared up. I do not see it as a potential copyright violation. Comparing people to fictional characters who are described in the novel as "a fanatic" and "[he] was to be pitied, as is every ignorant man who triumphs." and by critics as "He is "one of the most tragic legalists in Western literature" and "the consummate legalist"." is a personal attack. That "[he] finds himself unable to reconcile his life's work pursuing criminals with the nobility and justice shown him by the man he thought was a criminal, and takes his own life by jumping off a bridge into the river Seine." You do seem to me to be a somewhat fanatical legalist. Fanatical in watching my every edit. Legalistic in declaring that altering the contrast of an existing image is a violation of the ban and that restoring someone else's edit is a copyright violation. Can you cite some actual Wikipedia policy that says 5 - 1 = 0? You are using the fallacy of false equivalency as your argument. The subjects of articles do not get to override Wikipedia policy. They want the publicity of being in Wikipedia and also want to be the editors and remove what they do not like. Incomplete longevity claims

I think you're thinking of the content at Longevity myths or List of people reported to have lived beyond 130 (I don't know why 130). If the content was fleshed out (mythology, rumors, issues with inability to determine time properly) with actual secondary sources, I think the "incomplete" content could be merged into the myths article. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 07:40, 23 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Programmability of Colossus computer

Back in November 2012 you changed the description in the lead of this article from "was at all programmable" to "was programmable". I wasn't entirely happy with that, but let it be whilst I investigated further. Colossus is described by some as programmable, by others as "semi-programmable", and some deny that it was programmable in any modern sense. The way that it was set up to perform a particular task was by operating switches and plugging on a patch panel. As written I have no idea what "at all programmable" means. It just sounds like poor grammar. Can't you think of a way to phrase it where it has some meaning to someone who is not involved with the debate. In the case of the lede bit about Jekyll Island, I believe you've done this more than once now. Please self-revert. You may have engaged with this article unaware of the recent contentious history, but now that it's been pointed out to you in the wake of your edits, I hope you'll adjust your approach. NYT favor?

Our article on Frank R. Paul says he was born in Vienna, and seems to cite the NYT's obit for him; however, the index at PulpArtists.com says he was born in Radkersburg (and that his birth name was "Rudolph Franz Paul"). Question about black lists

I don't get the concept, or why we even have such a thing. Can you provide some insight?

  1. What causes a site to be blacklisted?
  2. Who makes that determination?
  3. Once a site is blacklisted, can it be unblacklisted, and if so, what is the process?

Mullers

Enrique Muller was a photographer who was born in Germany(?) in 1846, and came to America. His son, Robert Enrique Muller, also known as "E. Muller", was also a photographer. In order to distinguish photographs taken by the father from photographs taken by the son (for purposes of categorization), it would be useful to know the father's date of death; might you be able to help out in this respect? Wikidata pages are common for people who do have biographies in other-language wikipedias, such as Homberg-1876 — at French wp fr:Octave Homberg (1876-1941) and at Wikidata d:Q15969995. Re the latter, its WD page history shows that it was created automatically from the FR.wiki biography 12 months ago. Commonly such WD pages do carry useful authority identifiers, altho this one does not; maybe it's rare for those with unlabeled pagenames, [Q#########].

I agree that the wording was somewhat misleading, but your objection, expressed in the edit summary, is actually taken care of in the following sentente where an exception is described. What the text meant, I think, before you removed the navboxes, was that in this template there should be no red links, because it is supposed to show what Wikipedia has on this subject

Interesting, I wasn't aware of the rule that would exclude them from succession boxes, I always include red links there. Where red links should not be included is in infoboxes, since they are supposed to give no original info, but only to repeat key info from either the text or the succession boxes, and the red links can remain only there. WS to WP links - my two cents

RAN,

I looked at the discussion over at WikiSource, and at the comments on your talk page there. I don't get the same understanding from those discussions as what you've posted at JimboTalk (JT):

  • At JT, your comments suggest that an admin at WS is removing WP links and has blocked you over your disagreement.
  • At WS, the admin (who seems to want to work with you and unblock you) indicates there are WS conventions (for linking and some other things he documented on your talk page there) which he feels you've not been following.
  • It is not clear to me if WP linking is well defined in WS policy, or open to interpretation but understood by editors there. If current convention works against your preference, you'd have some work to do to get consensus for a change.

I'm not sure your post at JT will accomplish a change to how WS works with regards to these issues. You might be best served by engaging the WS admin on your talk page there.

Now there is a house to live in! You should be updating the tree at Familysearch when you tie together families. I have been doing it also. I also like it as a backup if the Wikipedia images and biographies get deleted. I also add my biographies to Findagrave if I know the cemetery, and even if I do not, I add a biography and fill in the cemetery later. Another good place to backup your biographies is Familypedia, you just cut and paste the whole thing and 90% of the templates will be identical, and the references stay in the same format. The more places you back things up to, the more likely it will survive the next 100 years. Not sure if you are able to find much more about Heman Edward Drummond, Garry N. Drummond, Elbert Allen Drummond...pictures would be good, but I haven't found any in the public domain. There is an Ingram connection apparently, but I can't find any newspaper articles about a wedding or divorce, so I can't add it. (The Ancestry forum is not a reliable source.) Btw, there is already a Category:Drummond family for the Scottish family, so I am not sure how to create their own category...they might be vaguely related, but I don't think we could use the same one. The reason why not

One of the reasons why consensus changes is that new users arrive to the project. These new users will probably not have seen the article, and by definition they won't have participated in the deletion debate. They might have a different opinion than current users about whether the topic is, e.g., notable, but how will they form this opinion without the information that was in the article, unless someone rehashes that information on the DRV page? In short, users will be less informed in the DRV debate than they were in the original AfD debate, so the decision will likely get worse, not better. The move function keeps the history intact from user space to mainspace. I wasn't sure that it would until someone asked me it they could move the article so they could work on it. I crossed my fingers and he made the move, and the history was intact with me as the creator, and all subsequent edits intact. It doesn't seem that the closer has notified you that there was a second outcome of the debate. The following tag is to be attached at the top of your userspace new starts:

On the one hand that might feel like people are being mean to you for no reason, but I actually think this is a good thing since it makes clear that your userspace starts, if certified copyright clean, are expressly permitted to be moved to mainspace without charges of being an unauthorized proxy being leveled. Be sure you put the above tag on the top of all your new starts in user space, even the ones already existing because you have enemies and they will use that fact as a cudgel against you if you don't. Hopefully we'll be able to get the spigot opened up for your new starts over the next month or two.

I would also advise you strongly against directly soliciting anyone to help move articles to mainspace. While not expressly prohibited, a couple of the people in the debate indicated they would respond very negatively to that. It's still a grey area and you must be very careful to avoid grey areas... Anyway, even though it probably feels like you were beat up again, I think this all is a very positive outcome for Wikipedia and for you. I'm not sure if you've been following events there, but ArbCom seems to be creeping towards a finish in the "clarification" hearing against you started by Beyond My Ken. -LINK It looks like there is a pretty good chance that those guys are going to shut you down from additional new starts even on your user page, and will require a six month wait PLUS all the backlog starts to be either moved to mainspace or deleted PLUS the requirement of you to make "substantial progress" cleaning up your 10 year old editing before any appeal can be made. It is completely idiotic, of course, but ArbCom hasn't caught a clue in two earlier considerations of your situation so it would be a real change of pace for them to start to figure things out now... In any event, get your starts started on your user page if you have anything that you're burning to do.

Redlinks on your user page

Richard, once again, it is important to turn those redlink proposed starts blue on your user page — User:Richard Arthur Norton (1958- )/David H. McCullough, User:Richard Arthur Norton (1958- )/James J. Gallagher, etc. It doesn't matter so much what the new "starts" say... "David H. McCullough was an American man." end of page, whatever. In the event ArbCom commits another idiocy and shuts you down from making new starts, the starts showing on your user page are apparently going to be grandfathered in, you will be able to keep working on those until someone comes along to certify them copyright clear and to port them over to mainspace. However, if ArbCom initiates new sanctions, you probably won't be able to turn the red starts showing on your user page blue and they're just going to have to be removed until a new ArbCom with an open mind is elected. So just crank out some stupid one or two line placeholder stubs as insurance if you have any intent on working on any of those pieces from the ground up. I think that you can still create article drafts in your userspace at meta, or in your userspace at the Simple English Wikipedia, both places which are outside the jurisdiction of the Arbitration Committee. In these cases, of course, others could create a placeholder stub in the mainspace for you to then copy your work here, where it belongs. You proved to be absolutely right that the article name was conflated between the subject and another person. I think it will work out okay in the end but there are hoops to be jumped, it would seem. If you need to have a start made for a piece on the real Henry Lincoln Johnson, an attorney and civil service functionary who seems is notable in his own right, let me know and I'd be happy to get the ball rolling on it. Doesn't meet WP:CORPDEPTH. Only claim to fame seems to be the Johnny Carson archiving; I couldn't find any sources that provide significant coverage of the company itself.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
