*done. The wording change improves clarity without sacrificing much space. Discussions about the scope of WP:NOTNEWS should be discussed elsewhere, it is unrelated to this blurb. --<span style="color:#009">Jayron</span><b style="color:#090">32</b> 15:23, 12 September 2023 (UTC)

Revision as of 15:23, 12 September 2023

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

 • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
 • Offer a correction if possible.
 • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
 • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 12:27 on 10 May 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
 • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
 • Do not use edit fully-protected on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems, because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
 • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
 • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
 • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed, determined not to be an error, or the item has rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Errors with "In the news"

 • "Storm Daniel causes flooding across Libya and the collapse of two dams, leaving more than 3,000 people dead."

The article tells us that the storm caused flooding and deaths across a wide area, including Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria. The blurb should therefore not give the impression that only Libya was affected. I suggest:

 • ALT "Storm Daniel causes flooding around the central Mediterranean and the collapse of two dams in Libya, leaving more than 3,000 people dead."
When I googled Storm Daniel most of the results were related to Libya, as the bulk of the deaths were there(Greece had only 15 according to [1]). 331dot (talk) 12:35, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There's more to this than a bodycount. It's remarkable that some parts of Greece got over a metre of rain. And the cleanup and recriminations continue. See Greek PM under attack over handling of Storm Daniel disaster response, for example. Andrew🐉(talk) 13:28, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
My point is less the bodycount and more the fact that the news seems to be focusing on Libya. Places getting a large amount of rain in a short time is the norm now with climate change. 331dot (talk) 13:43, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Per WP:NOTNEWS, we're not a news source and so should be giving an encyclopedic perspective. That means a broader and fuller view, not just the latest sensation. The linked article isn't just about Libya and so the blurb should summarise accordingly. Andrew🐉(talk) 14:22, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
WP:NOTNEWS refers to articles, not to blurbs in sections literally titled "In the news". So it's not an error in that respect. Feel free to establish consensus to rework the blurb at WP:ITNC.—Bagumba (talk) 14:37, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
WP:NOTNEWS has a lot to say, including "Wikipedia is not a newspaper" and "Wikipedia is not written in news style". If you don't like this language then feel free to argue accordingly at WP:NOT. Andrew🐉(talk) 14:54, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
WP:NOT is fine. Taking snippets and shortcuts out of context is not. WP:NOTNEWS clearly states Ensure that Wikipedia articles are not... before enumerating. Regards. —Bagumba (talk) 15:11, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

 •  Done. The wording change improves clarity without sacrificing much space. Discussions about the scope of WP:NOTNEWS should be discussed elsewhere, it is unrelated to this blurb. --Jayron32 15:23, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
