Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by The Bestagon (talk | contribs) at 12:08, 2 March 2023 (→‎Errors with "In the news": Calabria needs an update). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 01:01 on 21 May 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems, because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed, determined not to be an error, or the item has rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

i do not know if "kleptotoxicism" is a word used in the relevant literature. it appears to have been added to the article by an ip user, here, without a reliable source. the word appears on this site as well, though it cites wikipedia as a source. i did not want to remove the word unilaterally, so had left a message on the talk page of Sabine's Sunbird (the fac nominator) a few days ago, but that account appears to have made no edits within the last two years. dying (talk) 09:23, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

People VS Migrants

What's the guideline for the noun used to describe casualties of an accident? Recently all the victims have been described as "people" except for the shipwreck where they are described as "migrants". Does anyone else see a problem in that quite obvious difference in wording? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.89.104.107 (talk) 17:22, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. This seems like a WP:NPOV violation. We have three stories where "[n] people" died and one where "[n] migrants" died. It should consistently say "people". HumanBodyPiloter5 (talk) 07:39, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see a problem with migrants. The other cases did not involve migrants, but this one did, so we say migrants to give some context. And what does NPOV have to do with this? TheBestagon 12:06, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That they are migrants is a key aspect of information for that particular news item. J947edits 07:49, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see a problem. The train's dead are a mix of railway staff and passengers: "people" encompasses both. The boat's dead are entirely migrants (the one alleged people-trafficker being a survivor), so an encompassing term is not needed: "migrants" is truthful and accurate. If you personally interpret "migrants" as something problematic, then that is your prerogative. Bazza (talk) 10:40, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Calabria shipwreck death toll

The death toll is now 67, as stated in the article with an appropriate reference, so the figure on the Main Page should be updated. TheBestagon 12:08, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Bombing of the Bezuidenhout

"1945 – Second World War: The Royal Air Force mistakenly bombed the neighbourhood of Bezuidenhout in The Hague, killing 511 evacuees."

The only mention of evacuees in the article is uncited. The article states that 511 people were killed and (without citation) this included 8 firemen, so presumably all 511 weren't evacuees - Dumelow (talk) 07:51, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The source cited for the casualties simply says '511 killed' (in Dutch). We could simply remove 'evacuees' from the blurb. However there are a lot of {{cn}} tags in the article, which is also quite short, so maybe it would be better to swap it out for another item. Modest Genius talk 13:08, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Chicago

"1837 – Chicago, Illinois, was incorporated as a city after its population increased in seven years from 200 to more than 4,000."

The article says "On August 12, 1833, the Town of Chicago was organized with a population of about 200.[34] Within seven years it grew to more than 6,000 people" and "When founded in 1833, fewer than 200 people had settled on what was then the American frontier. By the time of its first census, seven years later, the population had reached over 4,000". The figures are different but mores importantly the number seems to have been measured in 1840, three years after incorporation - Dumelow (talk)
The Holocaust in Bulgarian-occupied Greece

"1943 – The Holocaust: Almost all Jews in Bulgarian-occupied northern Greece were deported to Treblinka extermination camp to be killed."

The article says "Overall 4,058 of the 4,273 Jews in Western Thrace were arrested during the roundup", which I agree is "almost all". The article also says Bulgaria occupied eastern Greek Macedonia too; the numbers here don't appear to be mentioned. Do the figures include Macedonia or should the OTD blurb read "almost all Jews in Bulgarian-occupied Western Thrace"? - Dumelow (talk) 08:09, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Brazzaville arms dump blasts

"2012 – A series of blasts occurred at an arms dump in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo, killing at least 250 people and injuring 2,300 others."

The article gives figures of 300 dead and 2,500 injured - Dumelow (talk) 08:12, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
