Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Dilettante (talk | contribs) at 21:03, 23 April 2024 (→‎Current DYK: Retracting comment). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 19:32 on 21 May 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems, because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed, determined not to be an error, or the item has rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

  • ... that the celebrity doctor Nandipha Magudumana was imprisoned and investigated for twelve crimes, including murder connected to a fugitive's prison escape? This whole page screams WP:BLPCRIME to me (and perhaps BLP1E). I see no mention of a conviction and no evidence she's a public figure. I'd strongly recommend a pull and no re-DYKing. Should we even have this article, let alone blurb the crime on the main page? I know just two weeks ago ITN was arguing about whether we should put anything about O. J. Simpson's trial, or just blurb mentioning his football career. While we did eventually include the trial, that was massively more covered than Magudumana's. Courtesy ping Dxneo and Storye book. Sincerely, Dilettante 17:29, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've removed the hook. This violates WP:DYKHOOKBLP. I see those involved are pinged above, so I won't re-ping. It's been on the main page for 18 hours, but just because 3/4 of the damage is done doesn't mean it should stay. I'm leaving all other issues for other people (DYK archiving, BLP issues in the article, possible AFD, etc), but with the current state of the article, I don't think it should be replaced with another hook to the same article. We really don't focus on negative info in a main page hook, particularly implying someone is guilty when they haven't been convicted. Even if true. Floquenbeam (talk) 17:52, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Dilettante, I am not a DYK expert or have any experience on that side of the encyclopedia, I believe that is why there are reviewers there to help people like me. However, to go as far as to question whether should there be an article of that individual or not is a low blow seeing that there's in depth SIGCOV of her, she made the news multiple times before the legal events and that's where she earned the title "the celebrity doctor" after earning her accolades. And Floquenbeam, would you please quote a statement in the article where it is implying that the subject is guilty. She may not have been convicted yet but her name is all over the news and she and Thabo Bester are the most (Google) searched people in 2023 in South Africa. You think someone of that stature does not deserve an article? dxneo (talk) 19:06, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Launchballer, PrimalMustelid and Amakuru as reviewer, prep, and queue promoters, respectively, should also be pinged for their information. Schwede66 19:17, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm really sorry about this, I dropped the ball on this one. I promoted the set a few days ago, and had checked the first hooks already but I didn't get as far down as this one and then due to having a busy weekend the matter it completely slipped my mind. This comes back to the point raised at WT:DYK a few weeks ago that it might be good to sign off individual hooks rather than a whole set, so that omissions can be spotted and rectified. Had I seen this, I would have immediately raised flags about it. If nothing else, the hook as written violates WP:DYKHOOKBLP, "Hooks that unduly focus on negative aspects of living persons should be avoided". I do kind of agree as well that the page's existence might not be justified at all. She is seemingly notable only for her involvement in issues relating to Thabo Bester and is not convicted of anything, so probably redirecting might be in order. Could be worth an AFD to explore.  — Amakuru (talk) 19:32, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I completely agree with you, Amakuru, that we should be signing off on individual hooks instead of a whole set. Schwede66 19:46, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Dxneo I retract my comment about BLP1E and now agree the subject is clearly notable. Sincerely, Dilettante 21:03, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Blair Peach, a British activist, was fatally injured after being knocked unconscious during an Anti-Nazi League demonstration against a National Front election meeting in Southall, London.: our source has him as New Zealand, not British, and indeed that's where he was born and lived most of his life. More generally, suggest adding something like "anti-racism activist", as the headline currently isn't clear about which side of the demonstration he was on.
