I know this is a little odd but I know you're really good at creating/expanding biographical articles, especially for folks that have recently died so there's plenty of widely available online sourcing for them. Incorrect Reversion

The change to Asahi Beer is NOT a vandalism. That IS the translation, and there is no point in providing a colloquialism without providing the translation. If there is no translation, the information is useless to non-Japanese speakers. I know it is a strange thing to call a building, but once you see it, you will understand. Check the discussion page of Asahi where I made comments about my edit.

Entries are not signed in articles, which attracted my attention, but the issue is that it does not have a source. i attempted to search through any reliable source -- especially newspapers and magazines -- that might support the claim, but found none, leading me to the conclusion that this was vandalism. I had planned on working on a few articles that I'll create offline while this punitive block passes pointlessly away, one of which is for the forthcoming Anti-Nazi Boycott of 1933 article. Rabbi Stephen Samuel Wise one of the boycott's organizers, was asked what the point of the boycott was if it did not stop the Nazis from persecuting Jews. Wise responded that "We must speak out", but "if that is unavailing, at least we shall have spoken." Some 75 years later, after six million Jews were killed by these same Nazis, the least I could possibly do would be to speak out against those who could have the gall to trivialize the experiences of those who lived through the terror of the Hitler era but were not officially admitted into concentration camps, because "any Jew who lived in Europe during the Nazi-era could technically call themself a 'Holocaust survivor'". The edit that has been used to justify this block, here, revolves around a CfD in which User:Good Olfactory insisted that Holocaust survivors should not be categorized "because any Jew who lived in Europe during the Nazi-era could technically call themself a 'Holocaust survivor'". Given that I, relatives, and friends have lost family members due to Hitler and the Nazis, it took me quite a great deal of time to write what I did at an appropriate level of discourse to address User:Good Olfactory's unacceptable trivializations of the world's greatest tragedy, the deaths of six million Jews and millions of others. I know, have met, read the works of and heard lectures from Holocaust survivors, almost all of whom are still deeply scarred from their experiences, and none feel that they used a "technicality" to call themselves "Holocaust survivors" if they were hunted down like dogs but managed to escape being put in a Nazi concentration camp and near-certain death. I had hoped that after reading my response to his unacceptable wording, that User:Good Olfactory might have realized how the gross insensitivity and callousness in his choice of words -- even if explicit anti-semitism was not the source of his wording -- and refactored his nomination and offered an apology. Instead, User:Good Olfactory's only response was to pursue a block. I would love to hear a justification for his gross insensitivity in wording and for the actions that have been taken as part of this process.

Decline reason:

Without getting into all of this, let's be as simple as possible. You called him ignorant. That's at the very least uncivil and quite possibly a personal attack. Your editing restrictions say that you are to be blocked in any instance of incivility. I thought I'd wait a day or two to cool off a bit and see what your actions were, which speak louder than words, as always. Waking up this morning to a sockpuppet investigation that couldn't possibly have been successful, filed less than 24 hours after leaving what could pass for an apology, didn't convince me that your words pasted above were sincere. I'm still not sure what it is that you're trying to accomplish, or why you're pushing the admin who found your sockpuppet expedition to be unfounded to find something that isn't there. Since you filed this sockpuppet investigation, I've made a thousand edits, started three or four articles and nominated two or three of them for DYK. I'm more than willing to move on. I want you to know I am not pushing the admin to "find" anything, nor did I earlier push for a block against you. If my sole goal or purpose was to have you blocked, it would be quite simple for me to just block you for incivility per the restriction. But because in each case I was otherwise involved, it was appropriate for me to seek a neutral appraisal of the appropriateness of the comments that concern me. It's clear the CU was "inconclusive" (leaning more to negative) and I personally take your word on the matter. The CU result combined with your word led me to have considered the issue closed, which then left me scratching my head about the need for the points you set out there (which I feel are more examples of incivility, but I understand you may disagree). Honestly, I would have approached you personally about the issue rather than filing a CU request if I had not felt you were in a state of perpetual attack mode against everything I post on WP. My view is quite simple: regardless of how many or what type of edits anyone does—if the user can't be civil to other editors in comments and disagreements with them, the user's being disruptive. If you take a look at CfD, you'll find I agree with you as often as I don't. As someone else I've disagreed with at times said recently, "Sure I said I wouldn't respond to your comments, but I didn't mean that to include when you were wrong" (maybe a slight paraphrase) and I will maintain that same privilege with you, with a good deal more restraint. I will try not to assume the worst, as you have requested, but there also needs to be a bit more balance in a process that's stacked against categories up for discussion. My suggestion to create and improve articles is intended to show that once your articles and categories are targets for deletion, you don't feel the same way deleting the work of others. Yeah, I acknowledge that we do agree on balance probably more often than not—it's just, as you say, they get less notice, don't they? I'm also fine when you or anybody else disagrees with me on the substantive issues; it generally doesn't bother me when a discussion proposal I make "fails", because often I think the discussion brings out some good points that I (and hopefully some others) hadn't thought of before, and often even though the initial proposal isn't carried forward, there's an agreement to rename or something for clarity purposes. So please don't hesitate to disagree just so you won't be disagreeing with me. As long as things don't get personal, I'll have no right of complaint about that.

Funny you should mention it, but I have been creating articles more lately; in fact, one of the of articles I recently started was just deleted via AfD this week. It was a good discussion, and one user there gave me a good idea how to approach the topic with an article of a different name, so it was worthwhile. I've also been doing some categorizing of Oceanic people by previously non-existent first-level administrative country subdivision categories—people from the New Jerseys of the Pacific, as it were.

I'll have to take your word on mediation, since I've never gone that route before. I can imagine it's probably not the best strategy if you're trying to let bygones by bygones.

Anyway, I hope you will accept my apologies for the things I've done to upset you. I'm a bit of a goof-ball, so undoubtedly some things I say in a friendly or good-natured way are interpreted differently by readers. Reverting edits on my talk page

I had seen his repeated vandalism and when I saw the edit it had appeared as vandalism. I tried to undo the revert and warning, but Huggle was unable to do so. No, that's not what I'm saying. You were right to revert that edit. However, the version you reverted to was another vandalizing edit. Don't use rollback in a situation like this. Rollback simply reverts all consecutive edits made by a particular editor. In this case, there were two consecutive acts of vandalism, made by two different editors. You rolled back to the first vandal's edit. Only use rollback to get to a good edit. The better tool here is to go into the page's history, and do a diff back to a known good version; and then use undo (not rollback) to revert to that good level. Reliable sourcing

Then at the very least, the sources written by proponents of parapsychology should be removed from the reference list of that article. In many cases, articles would be better if they weren't edited by proponents (or opponents) of the article's subject. However, as long as there is no direct conflict of interest, Wikipedia policy allows everyone to edit almost every article. Issues of content and balance, as well as concerns of conflict of interest, should be discussed at the article's talk page. The trouble at the WOP project continues. One editor has taken it upon himself to make drastic changes to longevity-related articles (like these [3] [4] [5] [6]), and pushing to delete lists of the oldest people by country, even though this same user was previously arguing to delete biographies because "the information would be better on a list". Maybe you'll edit war over a personal attack that labels an editor with more than 2,000 edits as an SPA. At least you're keeping your sense of humor about this. Ollie certainly is the latter, and his large number of edits, all in a single topic area, only reinforces that as it grows larger. WikiCup 2016 is just around the corner...

Hello everyone, and we would like to wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2016 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. There are some changes we'd like to announce before the competition begins.

After two years of serving as WikiCup judge, User:Miyagawa has stepped down as judge. He deserves great thanks and recognition for his dedication and hard work, and for providing necessary transition for a new group of judges in last year's Cup. Joining Christine (User:Figureskatingfan) and Jason (User:Sturmvogel 66) is Andrew (User:Godot13), a very successful WikiCup competitor and expert in Featured Pictures; he won the two previous competitions. This is a strong judging team, and we anticipate lots of enjoyment and good work coming from our 2016 competitors.

We would also like to announce one change in how this year's WikiCup will be run. In the spirit of sportsmanship, Godot13 and Cwmhiraeth have chosen to limit their participation. See here for the announcement and a complete explanation of why. They and the judges feel that it will make for a more exciting, enjoyable, and productive competition.

The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. • David in DC, there is a mechanism to report sockpuppets and this mechanism is not being used. No evidence is offered to support the claim and this comes off as just another effort to provoke an editor, not unlike the repeated SPA attacks that have been made by the same editor in the recent past. If you have the evidence to back up this claim, feel free to file a checkuser. Otherwise it's just a run-of-the-mill unsupported personal attack of the kind that gets blocks for people in the Longevity area broadly construed. Legacypac appears to have a tactic to endlessly repeat the same rejected arguments and provoke editors into falling into the trap of making a response that triggers yet another request for enforcement action, using an attrition tactic to eliminate other editors, and to my eye this appears to be at work here yet again. What needs to be done in these mass AfDs is to have editors make their best case the first time and have admins consider the arguments, wherever they come from. It was not an accident. If you look at my past editing history I have been making this format to every high school (public or non-public) as I go for the past few years. It's not really necessary to have it in the infobox. The reader should be aware of the level of education a school is mostly based on the first sentence and title of article. Just to let you know, my topic ban appeal failed... [7] No one actually refuted the arguments I put forward, but instead put their fingers in their ears and continued to spout out the usual prejudiced bullshit. It's no wonder that Wikipedia has the reputation it does when cretins like these are charge... It's ASTOUNDING that these people have no understanding of the concept that different sources can be more reliable than others in certain situations. Currently the List of oldest living people article is an original research list, and implies that Masamitsu Yoshida is the world's oldest man... but no outside source reports this. Do Wikipedia editors now decide who the world's oldest people are? God forbid I might suggest that the list should be based on the most reliable, authoritative source, so that we don't get fraudulent age claimants mixed in... Oh but no, that's "POV-pushing" and "advocating for the GRG". Just say the word "GRG" and most editors seem to have a fit. The result of my appeal was effectively decided before I even started. And what kind of judicial system is this? Just anyone can turn up when they want, meaning a very biased set of opinions were put forward. WikiCup 2015 March newsletter

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. Forty-seven competitors move into this round (a bit shy of the expected 64), and we are roughly broken into eight groups of six. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups.

Twenty-two Good Articles were submitted, including three by Cyclonebiskit (submissions), and two each by MPJ-DK (submissions), Hurricanehink (submissions), 12george1 (submissions), and Cas Liber (submissions). Twenty-one Featured Pictures were claimed, including 17 by Adam Cuerden (submissions) (the Round 1 high scorer). Thirty-one contestants saw their DYKs appear on the main page, with a commanding lead (28) by Cwmhiraeth (submissions). Twenty-nine participants conducted GA reviews with J Milburn (submissions) completing nine.

Here and on another page, you listed the birthplace of Ronald Naldi, complete with a quote from the source (a New York Times article). However, this source doesn't seem to mention Naldi at all. I checked the wayback machine, and even the version of that article when you made that edit doesn't mention him, nor does the quoted phrase appear anywhere on the internet outside of Wikipedia mirrors, so far as I can tell. This is the last time I will post here, unless required by Wikipedia policy. I have never followed you from article to article, and if you look at all of my edits, you can easily see I have not. If editing an article you have previously edited for the first time is harassment, articles would only be edited by the creator, but as you well know, Wikipedia does not work that way. I believe that you've edited almost every New Jersey school and location article, so using your definition, you claim anyone else who edits anything about New Jersey is harassing you. If your accusations were at all true, I'm sure you would know exactly how to take it to the authorities. Nobody would buy it, because it's silly. I plan to continue to edit New Jersey articles from time to time, not to trespass on what you seem to feel is your personal territory, but to improve the encyclopedia. For many of these articles, my next edit will be my first. I hope you will not view this as an attempt to challenge your authority, but to improve the articles. If so we can both improve the encyclopedia. If you continue to make personal attacks, use vulgarities, racial epithets, ignore consensus, etc., I will have an issue with that. You are a talented editor, and in one of the few times I have commented on a discussion at a noticeboard, I defended you when they were considering a block. Take a look at the edit history of the article Cooper Union. I edited the article, which I had edited before. You then edited the article, less than three hours later. Page history statistics show that you never edited the article before. Cooper Union is located in New York. It's not in New Jersey. This has nothing to do with a high school. It seems to be rather shameless stalking. Whether you mean it or not, my perception is that you've been harassing me. This needs to end, not just the stalking, but the perception thereof.

You too have made productive edits that improve articles, and I've thanked you for it on several occasions, as a show of good faith on my part. County Inter-Census updates

Alansohn, I think a favorable precedent has been set in the county infoboxes with your changes on the Burlington County, New Jersey article. Feel free (obviously) to update the other New Jersey counties as such. I would encourage favoring the QuickFacts ref only to facilitate updates in successive years at points where the reader only needs the most current estimate as well as the 2010 estimate, rather than all intervening years' data, given that the QuickFacts citation automatically updates itself yearly, minimizing the editwork. I've updated Atlantic and Burlington and will work my way through. I have been using both the QuickFacts and the 2015 Census links, recognizing that the same small changes needed to update the links also need to be applied to the data in the text. Do look at the California county articles, which use the Infobox settlement, which is far more robust than the county Infobox used in New Jersey and in the New York and Connecticut articles you've updated. EdJohnston, it's an article that I've edited a numbers of times in the past that remains on my Watchlist. After seeing a first wave of edit warring and assuming it stopped, and then a second wave of edit warring the next day with edit summaries like "The fucking fact that these fucking facts are *sourced*, are about the Clooisters, and cannot be removed without consensus" -- all within a 24 hour span -- it seemed like it might be appropriate to end the matter once and for all. What's so fun about backwards and repetitive?

I thought I did some fine work that you undid here. Time naturally flows forward, and years typically come before the thing they describe. In a section called "Government", "government" is implied in subsections. Highways and roads are part of public transportation, but distinct from public transit. Naming of New Jersey Towns

Serious question about New Jersey naming on Wikipedia. Does the MOS explicitly say that the artcile for a town has to be "xxx township", instead of just "xxx" town. Winterysteppe (talk) 17:11, 11 April 2016 (UTC)

• Winterysteppe, there is no such requirement that I've seen in the MOS. In those states with townships, the standard is to use the "xxx Township, New Jersey" format (usually with the county included as a disambiguator), such as at Category:Townships in Illinois, Category:Townships in Indiana, Category:Townships in Iowa, Category:Townships in Kansas, Category:Townships in Michigan and Category:Townships in Pennsylvania. We're far more relaxed on that standard in New Jersey, and the titles for most articles (townships included) have been stable for a decade or longer. Some townships always use the "xxx Township, New Jersey" format, for various reasons, such as to differentiate between a doughnut municipality with the same name (e.g. Chester Township, New Jersey / Chester Borough, New Jersey) or because that's the standard usage (e.g. all of the places named Washington Township, New Jersey) or because there is a neighborhood that shares the same name in or outside the township. There are plenty of townships that don't use that format, such as Irvington, New Jersey and West Milford, New Jersey. There are other situations where it may be appropriate to add or remove the word "township" from the article title, but that should only be done after obtaining clear consensus. WT:NJ is a wonderful place to go to in order to maximize participation, but the better way to do this would be to come up with an overall schema rather than one township at a time. I am new to this Wikipedia stuff. Trying to figure out if it is possible to change the article Society Hill, Middlesex County, New Jersey to be Society Hill, Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey. Will leave it up to your discretion. 2) How big of a city does it have to be for it to be used in that way? There are multiple Society Hills in NJ and most people know them by the city they are in(i.e Newark, Piscataway, Cherry Hill). Hi Alansohn. That COIN case went a bit sideways, but I just wanted to ask if given your RW role, which as I understand does have some power and accountabilty, you have thought through COI issues in Wikipedia? I know you have been around a long time, but we've been working on refining COI management. Just really quickly - managing COI has two steps - disclosure of the COI (ideally on your userpage) and then when you want to edit some topic where your COI is "active", proposing edits on the Talk page for others to review and implement, instead of editing directly. Doing those steps protects the integrity of Wikipedia as well as editors with a COI - defining the COI clearly lets others know where the boundaries are, and not editing directly within the boundary protects the editor from scandal. As I understand it, Alansohn has a role in local politics involving the city he lives in. I don't see that involves a conflict-of-interest that would mean avoiding any article that touches on the subject of the state of New Jersey. Every resident of the state has an opinion about state politics because we are affected by them, do we all have a conflict-of-interest?

I can see asking, not demanding, that Alansohn not edit articles involving the city where he has an official role, that this request could be justified but it's ridiculous to demand he stay away from articles on the entire state, especially given the enormous contributions he has made on Wikipedia. Every editor comes to Wikipedia with opinions and judgments but we all strive to maintain a neutral point of view and I think every editor should be allowed the benefit of the doubt, without lobbing accusations around. Jytdog and Liz, I agree that there is a potential conflict of interest regarding aspects of one particular article. Over the past two years where this would be an issue, I have tried to avoid editing the article, certainly avoiding any aspect of editing of a political nature. It's also important to recognize that the article under discussion isn't about me, but about a place. Jytdog's suggestions are certainly appropriate and will be reflected in future action on my part, but I don't see the scope expanding beyond this one article. The thing that was alarming to me was Alansohn's brazenness in editing articles that showed clear conflicts of interest and will influence political outcome of this Thursdays election.

To be clear here, what I wrote is what I wrote. Alan thanks for replying. In my view you should declare your COI on your userpage, and not directly edit the article about that town but rather offer changes on the Talk page (there should be no "try" about it). Wasickta has not brought diffs and I haven't dug in and looked myself, but for your own sake - and the sake of Wikipedia's reputation - if there is anything that would have bad "optics" along the lines of what Wasickta is saying with regard to specific people or ethnic voting blocs, you best keep in mind that whole WP:Wikipedia is in the real world thing. Again, for your sake and the sake of Wikipdia's reputation. (if you unaware of how bad this can get, there was editor for BP (the oil company) who scrupulously minded the COI guideline - disclosed his COI in his username, never made a direct edit, but his work here still created a big scandal. That got caught up in some nasty wiki-politics where one faction was shovelling his proposed edits into the article and others were trying to keep them out and the press got wind of a "BP editing its own article" story (Salon, HuffPo, Motherboard - that tier of things) and it just got ugly. And the guy did nothing wrong. So just please be mindful and please don't directly edit content directly where you have RW COI issues. If you do the right thing and people get upset you can say at least "I did the right thing under the COI guideline" and have that going for you, instead of being pure "hand in the cookie jar". Round 2 saw three FAs (two by Cas Liber (submissions) and one by Montanabw (submissions)), four Featured Lists (with three by Calvin999 (submissions)), and 53 Good Articles (six by Worm That Turned (submissions) and five each by Hurricanehink (submissions), Cwmhiraeth (submissions), and MPJ-DK (submissions)). Eleven Featured Pictures were promoted (six by Adam Cuerden (submissions) and five by Godot13 (submissions)). One Featured Portal, Featured Topic and Good Topic were also promoted. The DYK base point total was 1,135. Cwmhiraeth (submissions) scored 265 base points, while The C of E (submissions) and MPJ-DK (submissions) each scored 150 base points. Eleven ITN were promoted and 131 Good Article Reviews were conducted with MPJ-DK (submissions) completing a staggering 61 reviews. Two contestants, Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and Cas Liber (submissions), broke the 700 point mark for Round 2.

The biggest question should be "is the material encyclopedic?" Should an encyclopedia contain details about a short-term sports league or the commissioner of a recreational basketball league? In my opinion it is encyclopedic. Most people that are going to be visiting the Hillsdale, NJ Wikipedia page are going to be from Hillsdale and I feel like it would be informative to them. Look at our policies on notability, verifiability and reliable sources. If there are articles in newspapers and magazines that are about this individual, with a claim of notability. It might be possible to create an article about this person. Question about Becton Regional High School Deletion

I have a few questions after the deletion of my edit regarding the high school. I really am a graduate, I do work as the evening traffic reporter on WCBS (AM) and I wonder how do I add this info without it being deleted? Maybe I'm not that significant, even though there's only one listing for alums from the school... the guitarist for a Brazilian metal band. I'm sure you'll cite paragraph two, subsection four, addendum six about this.

Also, how could it be that you deleted it in less than an hour of my posting it? How does that work? Do you watch what anyone posts on any high school in New Jersey and examine it within an hour? How about elementary schools, middle schools, colleges and universities? Does a bell ring or a buzzer sound? Again, less than an hour and it was gone from a page that few people look at much and nobody has contributed to since December of last year.

I'm sure you'll think you're totally correct, quoting your knowledge of all things Wikipedia, all those terms and lingo that looks like Greek to the rest of us. I guess I feel like I was caught jaywalking and an overzealous policeman is there to give me a ticket by the time I get to the sidewalk. I suppose you'll say I have to have some publication I could quote that has my name and position in it... or that the Brazilian guitarist's band has its own Wikipedia page. But that leaves Becton Regional with only one notable alum after decades of turning out students. I wonder what's worse, your looking the other way when you see a post on a high school's webpage that doesn't quite fit the Wikipedia rule book, or the school has only one notable alum? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Steve1reg (talk • contribs)

I assume you're referring to this edit. I've edited the article for Henry P. Becton Regional High School in the past, and the article is on my "Watchlist". When articles on my watchlist are edited, I see the edits and (more often than not) I'll check out the edit to see if it's valid. Sometimes it can be hours or days after the edit, but it can be within minutes.

In terms of the added entry, people listed as alumni must be notable, with their own independent article backed up with reliable and verifiable sources such as books, magazines or newspaper articles about the person.

If you know of any other notable alumni from Becton, the entries could be (and should be) added to the article. Alansohn (talk) 00:35, 23 May 2016 (UTC)

June 2016 Guild of Copy Editors Newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors June 2016 News Hello everyone, welcome to the June 2016 GOCE newsletter. It's been a few months since we sent one out; we hope y'all haven't forgotten about the Guild! Your coordinators have been busy behind the scenes as usual, though real life has a habit of reducing our personal wiki-time. The May backlog reduction drive, the usual coordinating tasks and preparations for the June election are keeping us on our toes! May drive: Thanks to everyone who participated in last month's record-setting backlog reduction drive. Of the 29 people who signed up, 16 copyedited at least one article, 197 copyedits were recorded on the drive page, and the copyedit backlog fell below 1,500 for the first time! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. June Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz will occur from 12 June through 18 June; the themes will be video games and Asian geography. Coordinator elections: It's election time again; how quickly they seem to roll around! Nominations for the next tranche of Guild coordinators, who will serve a six-month term that begins at 00:01 UTC on 1 July and ends at 23:59 UTC on 31 December, opens at 00:01 UTC on 1 June and closes at 23:59 UTC on 15 June. The refs are a mess; most don't follow Wikipedia reference formatting guidelines and will be replaced with proper formatting. It's not arbitrariness, but rather competent, responsible editing that motivates corrections. Froid, there is no mess. The problem is that you prefer using templates and the article doesn't. Per WP:CITEVAR, "When an article is already consistent, avoid... adding citation templates to an article that already uses a consistent system without templates, or removing citation templates from an article that uses them consistently". No, you are mistaken. There's no justifiable reason to NOT use Wikipedia formatting style, especially in the case of this article, where the failure to do so has created numerous references that are improperly formatted -- that result is arbitrary, unnecessary, improper. Moreover, it contributes to the mess, which includes not only improperly formatted references, but improper grammar/mechanics/formatting within the article's text, as well. I encourage you to seek input from a Wikipedia arbitration body for help resolving our obvious strong differences about this article. Froid (talk) 14:23, 10 June 2016 (UTC)

Please read the guideline and explain how imposing your preference to change citation formats complies with WP:CITEVAR's rather clear statement that "When an article is already consistent, avoid... adding citation templates to an article that already uses a consistent system without templates, or removing citation templates from an article that uses them consistently".
