Kumkum Bhagya (English title: Twist of Fate) is an Indian drama television series produced by Ekta Kapoor's Balaji Telefilms. It premiered from April 15, 2014 on Zee TV and also digitally available on ZEE5. The Tamil Dubbed Version of Kumkum Bhagya titled Iniya Iru Malargal which was earlier telecasted in Polimer Tv and after few Episodes it was started to air in Zee Tamil. It has huge Fan base among Tamil Audience and after Covid 19 Pandemic Zee Tamil Spoiled the show by their Worst Dubbing. People are asking for Proper Old Dubbing but Zee Tamil did not pay any response to their Audience. The series initially starred Sriti Jha, Shabbir Ahluwalia, Shikha Singh, Mugdha Chaphekar, Naina Singh and Krishna Kaul. In 2020, Reyhna Malhotra replaced Shikha Singh as Alia and Pooja Banerjee replaced Naina Singh as Rhea. Kumkum Bhagya is loosely based on Jane Austen's 1811 novel Sense and Sensibility.

The series started as the story of Pragya, Bulbul and their mother Sarla Arora's hope to see them married. Later, the show revolved around Abhi and Pragya. On March 18, 2019, after Abhi and Pragya's separation, a twenty-year leap was introduced. Post-leap, Mugdha Chaphekar and Naina Singh (later replaced by Pooja Banerjee) were introduced as Abhi and Pragya's separated twin daughters, Prachi Mehra and Rhea Mehra.

Plot

Arora sisters, Pragya and Bulbul help their mother Sarla run the Kumkum Bhagya marriage hall. The series begins with a short-lived love triangle involving Pragya – Suresh – Bulbul, leading to the cancellation of Pragya's engagement with Suresh. Rockstar Abhishek "Abhi" is in a relationship with supermodel Tanushree "Tanu". Purab Khanna is Abhishek's best friend and music handler and hires Bulbul at his advertising agency. He falls in love with Bulbul despite being engaged to Abhi's sister Alia. Alia misunderstands that Purab is seeing Pragya and Abhi marries Pragya to keep her from ruining Alia's relationship with Purab. Post-marriage, Pragya realizes the truth and accepts the blame to protect Bulbul. On his wedding day, Purab abandons Alia and comes clean to everyone about his love for Bulbul. Various situations and circumstances bring Abhishek and Pragya closer. Abhi reconciles with Purab and Bulbul and gets them married. Desperate to get Abhi back, Tanu fakes a DNA report to imply that he is the father of her unborn child, which is actually the result of a one-night stand between her and Nikhil. Pragya realises the truth but suffers an accident and is declared dead, before she could reveal the truth to Abhi.

20 days later

Pragya returns to exact revenge on her wrongdoers by becoming the owner of Abhi's properties. Bulbul risks her life and dies while saving Pragya from Alia. The season ends with Pragya exposing Tanu and winning back Abhi's trust. However, Abhishek gets into an accident and loses his memory. He forgets the last one-and-a-half years of his life, including Pragya who has to leave him for his own good.

1 month later

Abhi and Pragya come across each-other once again, the meeting results to their friendship where Abhi is still unaware of who she is. On his wedding day with Tanu, Pragya is kidnapped by Nikhil's goons and Abhi leaves Tanu on the mandap and searches for Pragya. In between the days of escaping from the goons Abhi and Pragya marry each other. Abhi regains his memory but he soon loses Pragya for she is shot by some goons and falls into a dam. However, after several sequences with her look alike named Munni, Pragya finally recovers from coma and reconciles with Abhi. On the other hand, Purab and Disha's love story begins to bloom. She proposes to him and he decides to move on from Bulbul and give their marriage a chance.

A girl named Simonika, joins Abhi's office as his secretary, she plans to take her revenge for he has killed her husband Dushyant. In a barter, Tanu asks Simonika to spare Abhi and kill Pragya instead. However, Simonika ends up murdering Dadi who reaches the factory before Pragya to save her life. Both Abhi and Alia blame Pragya for Dadi's death. Abhi asks Pragya to leave, thus, a heart-broken and grief-stricken Pragya is shown attempting suicide by jumping off a cliff.

7 years later

Abhi lives with Tanu in a mutually agreed upon fake relationship, while Pragya is living in the UK with King Singh, a London-based rapper. She also has a daughter from Abhi, named Kiara. Abhi and Pragya hold each other responsible for Dadi's death. Purab and Disha have a happy married life and they now have a son, Sunny. Abhi and King are offered a world music album and thus, the latter flies to India with Pragya and Kiara.

Kiara and Abhi meet in Delhi, where the Mehra family now lives, and become good friends. First meet of King and Abhi is in clash, where he meets Pragya in police station as King's wife and latter is heartbroken. Abhi and King become friends. Abhi finds out about Kiara being his daughter at Neha's wedding, who is Mitali and Raj's daughter. Abhi comes to know that King and Pragya are not married for real. He convinces Pragya of his love and remarries her, after their marriage, Pragya expects twins. King who fell in love with her, misses her and Kiara. A jealous Tanu tries to kill Pragya and her unborn babies, but Abhi, Alia and others kick her out of the house. King decides to protect Pragya from Tanu. Tanu reaches out to her ex-boyfriend Nikhil and instigates him to take revenge from Abhi by murdering Pragya and her twins. Nikhil enters Mehra mansion with the intention of killing Pragya and her twins but Kiara identifies him. To save himself from being exposed, he changes his plan and kidnaps Kiara. Nikhil then calls Abhi and Pragya to ask for ransom money, while King plans to take Kiara with him and agrees to pay more money to Nikhil but he should give Kiara to him. But Kiara is killed by Nikhil for seeking revenge which results in Pragya and Abhi blaming each-other. This results in Abhi taking one twin and Pragya taking another, and both of them leaving each other.

20 years later

Pragya is living with her daughter, Prachi in Hoshiarpur who is a simple, kind hearted and disciplined girl. There Pragya resides with Beeji and Shahana (Beeji's granddaughter). Rhea, the other twin is brought up by Abhi who turns out to be an arrogant fashionista and adamant girl, but loves her father and Aliya a lot. Rhea has been brought up by her governess, Meera who she loves a lot. But Meera has secretly been in love with Abhi for years, but doesn’t act upon her feelings as she knows Abhi belongs to Pragya only and thus her duty is with Rhea only. Disha and Purab are now separated since 19 years and Purab married Alia and together they have a son, Aryan. It is revealed that Alia created misunderstandings between Purab-Disha which caused Disha to leave Purab for good. As Shahana and Prachi get full scholarship in Delhi (college where Rhea too studies), they decide to go there and study. Pragya first refuses as Abhi too lives there but later accepts. There Prachi and Abhi meet multiple times and create a strong bond. But Rhea develops hatred for Prachi especially after Abhi’s growing fatherly bond with Prachi, so Pragya comes there to stay with Prachi, and to clear their misunderstandings. However, Rhea and Pragya share a good relationship. Pragya, Prachi and Shahana live in Sarita behen's house, who fondly calls Pragya by her daughter's name Anuradha, and as a result Prachi's mother Pragya is mistaken as Anuradha by Abhi. Ranbir Kohli (Abhi's best friend and business partner) Vikram Kohli's son) and Rhea are childhood friends who secretly like each other. He proposes to Rhea who asks him to pretend to fall for Prachi, then break her heart as a condition to accept him. Prachi and Ranbir hate each other and constantly bicker and she doesn’t like Ranbir because of his casanova ways and flirty behaviour to every girl. His charms work on every girl in college but not on Prachi which confuses him. Sanju, Prachi’s obsessed lover from Hoshiarpur arrives in Delhi looking for Prachi. He works with Rhea so she can get the two married as soon as possible as she can’t stand Ranbir-Prachi’s closeness anymore. She tells Ranbir to speed up the process of breaking Prachi’s heart as she starts to become even jealous. Whilst completing Rhea’s quest, Ranbir unknowingly falls in love with Prachi for real especially as he is attracted to her simplicity and she too starts to reciprocate his feelings. Disha and Purab meet again and it is evident they are still in love with each other. However, Disha maintains her distance after finding out Purab and Alia are married and have a son. Purab hates Alia and only stays with her because of Aryan. In a turn of events, Ranbir gets engaged to Maya, a politician's daughter and on their wedding day she is swapped by Prachi as part of Ranbir, Prachi, Aryan, Shahana and Sarita‘s plan. Their wedding is however stopped and everyone is overjoyed that Ranbir and Maya won’t marry. Ranbir and Prachi make a promise to each other. He soon proposes to Prachi and makes her wear a ring which is seen by a shocked Rhea (who was supposed to get engaged with him as both their families want them to marry). This enrages Rhea, who along with Alia decide to kill Prachi but ends in knowing the truth that Prachi is her own elder sister and Pragya is her mother. Ranbir gets forced to get engaged with Rhea due to his mother's health condition and her wish to make Ranbir forget Prachi and marry Rhea.

Abhi and Pragya come face to face after a series of events and they learn that Prachi and Rhea are their own twin daughters. Ranbir tries to avoid Prachi for his mother even though it is killing him and Prachi is upset as she thinks he doesn’t love her anymore. When she confronts him he can’t hide his emotions anymore and tells Prachi she is the best girl in the world and he loves her so much. Rhea overhears their confession and when she sees them together she lashes out at Prachi and says the latter she and Ranbir will marry. Prachi defends herself saying she is engaged to Ranbir but Rhea tells her that their engagement is already decided by their families. Prachi runs away, upset and angry at Ranbir. Shahana shouts at Ranbir saying he is lucky to have Prachi in his life and accuses him of betraying her for Rhea. Soon, Ranbir visits Prachi who is still upset with him and he tells her it’s all his mother’s doing and he will fix it and one day he will bring her to his home as Mrs. Kohli. Prachi forgives him and they reunite. Pragya misunderstands that Abhi is living with Meera (Rhea's caretaker) and gets away from him. Then misunderstandings begin to crop up again between Prachi and Ranbir due to Abhi and Meera's wedding. Rhea promises to get Pragya married to Abhi if Prachi breaks her relationship with Ranbir. Prachi, brokenheartedly agrees to this for her mother's happiness. She thus distances herself from Ranbir saying she was only with him for his money.

On the other side Abhi wants to make Pragya accept her love for him and plans a fake marriage with Meera who goes along with the plan to reunite Abhi and Pragya. Baljeet Dadi and Purab try to convince Abhi that Pragya is his soulmate and only wife but Abhi is determined to go ahead with the fake wedding. Ranbir learns that Prachi broke up with him because of her deal with Rhea but he doesn’t know what it was about. Therefore, he along with Aryan, Shahana and his friends Jay and Palak plan his and Prachi’s wedding in a temple. Prachi remains unknown about this as she thinks Jay and Palak are marrying. However, at the last minute Ranbir changes his mind as he realises he wants to marry Prachi properly and not in a deceiving way. On the other hand as expected by Abhi and Meera, Pragya arrives, stops his and Meera’s wedding and remarries him with Meera’s blessings. The family are overjoyed to see this over a video call but Alia is furious thus she throws Meera out of the house. The newlyweds Abhi and Pragya run away after seeing goons chasing them. It is revealed to be a man called Digvijay who wants to get revenge from Abhi for something that happened years ago. Digvijay and his men shoot Abhi. But, Pragya somehow manages to save him and takes him to a hospital. However, Pragya is kidnapped by Digvijay's goon. Doctors declare Abhi dead. Pragya manages to escape from goons and rushes to the hospital and revives Abhi but the goons arrive at the hospital again and chase Pragya but she faints and the goons leave. It is revealed that Pragya was in coma for 2 days and none of the family has been allowed to see Abhi because of Alia. The Mehras have been hiding Abhi’s unknown secret which makes Pragya suspicious and when she pleads to see Abhi as she is his wife, Alia gets her arrested after showing proof they aren’t married. She is however released and returns to the Mehras but Alia kicks her out.

Tanu returns to the Mehras after being called by Alia. Pragya decides to change her identity to Gayatri so she can work at the Mehra mansion as a veiled servant. It is revealed that Abhi has become mentally unstable and has lost his mind therefore he is kept locked up in the room. Everyone in the Mehra mansion knows of this except Pragya, Prachi, Shahana, Sarita, Ranbir and Aryan. Pragya is shocked and heartbroken on seeing Abhi’s condition and she is further astonished to see Aliya beating him up with a stick which Abhi is scared of.

Ranbir tries winning back Prachi again whilst she still maintains her distance now knowing her parents have remarried and her deal with Rhea was successful. However, she learns from Palak that Ranbir planned his and Prachi’s wedding in the temple and they were supposed to marry that day. Angry, Prachi confronts Ranbir for his betrayal. Ranbir retaliates by saying he regrets not marrying her that day and he promises Prachi that now she will see a different side to him; someone who will get what he wants despite the consequences. Prachi and Aryan are horrified seeing another side to Ranbir who says to Aryan, Prachi will become Mrs. Ranbir Kohli no matter what. Aliya tells Tanu to get close to Rhea and show her a lot of affection so when Abhi gets back to normal he can trust Tanu and Alia. Alia plans Ranbir-Rhea’s engagement which makes the Kohli's happy except Ranbir who tells everyone he doesn’t accept this relation. Ranbir informs Prachi about the families’ decision for him to marry Rhea which upsets Prachi. Rhea overhears their conversation and is shocked to hear that Ranbir and Prachi were about to marry in the temple. She accuses Prachi of turning back on their deal however Prachi tells her it was unknown to her. Meanwhile, Pragya in her Gayatri avatar is befriends abhi. He asks if he can call her Fuggi (which was the name Abhi used to call Pragya). This overwhelms Pragya. She gradually slowly starts to improve his condition by bringing him in front of the family members so Abhi can get used to them. Ranbir is suspicious of Gayatri/Pragya. Abhi enjoys teasing Tanu and Mitali. He also forms a friendship with his daadi. Pragya (Gayatri) also hears about Ranbir-Rhea’s engagement and is stuck on what to do as she knows Ranbir and Prachi love each other and on the other hand Rhea is also her daughter too and she doesn’t want her to get hurt. Rhea plans a fake MMS of Prachi along with her friend, Parth so it could cause Ranbir to be disgusted of Prachi’s character. However, Ranbir doesn’t believe the MMS and supports Prachi and beats up Parth. Prachi realises Rhea caused this so she decides to go along with the plan to make Ranbir hate her. She tells Ranbir the MMS is true and she convinces him she and Parth love each other. Ranbir feels betrayed and angry and seeing as he can’t take her betrayal anymore he announces to his family he is ready to marry Rhea who is overjoyed. Ranbir visits Prachi one last time and breaks all the ties between them and in front of Prachi he destroys her memories. He further announces to her that he and Rhea will be getting engaged soon which shocks Prachi. She breaks down in front of Shahana having lost Ranbir for good. Ranbir too has a breakdown. Aryan and Shahana fail to convince the duo what they are doing is wrong. Tanu tries to brainwash Rhea against Pragya.

Ranbir and Rhea’s engagement preparations begin and Digvijay plans to kill Abhi in the party. Shahana arrives in the party to stop ranbir with the help of Aryan but is stopped by alia. Prachi arrives in the engagement to search for Shahana as Ranbir told her not to send anyone to stop his engagement. She collides with Ranbir and they both become emotional. They have an argument where Ranbir accuses her of coming to his engagement to stop him. Abhi overhears their conversation and Prachi is heartbroken seeing her father in this state. Abhi takes off his flower ring which was given by Ranbir earlier to calm him down. He gives the ring to Ranbir and forces him to put it on Prachi’s finger. Abhi gets happy seeing their ‘pretend engagement’. Rhea sees Abhi playing and tries to bond with him after being told by Ranbir. When she enquires about Ranbir, Abhi tells her Ranbir put a ring on a girl’s finger which makes Rhea stunned. On the other hand, Ranbir badmouths Prachi and calls her a gold digger and opportunist and says her tears are fake. When Prachi tells him she doesn’t want to stop his engagement he forcefully takes the ring off her hand which hurts her finger and tells her she’s not worthy of it. Prachi gets upset and says to him she doesn’t love him; Ranbir proves she does love him as he hits his hand repeatedly on the pillar and Prachi cries and stops him and caresses his hand; he tells her he knows she still loves him. Ranbir tells her to say the truth and when Prachi is about to say something she hears Rhea calling out to her. Ranbir and Rhea leave from there after Rhea sees no ring on Prachi’s fingers but scratches. Abhi gets interested in knowing about wedding rituals and he speaks to a Pandit and learns in order to get married you have to take seven rounds. He tells Gayatri (Pragya) to marry him and they walk around 7 times pretending. Tanu sees this and complains to Alia. She says Gayatri is exactly like Pragya. When Rhea hears Pragya’s name she tells them not to mention that name ever again as she hates her the most and feels unlucky to get a mom like her. Pragya overhears this and gets upset. Aryan also overhears Digvijay’s men’ conversation of finishing off Abhi and he breaks free from the bathroom, knocks the killer on his head and goes to inform the family but the killer knocks him unconscious. Ranbir and Rhea get engaged with an upset Prachi looking on. Ranbir dances with Rhea to make Prachi jealous which works but when she sees Pragya watching her she pretends to be happy and hides her pain under her smile. The killers cut the rope from the chandelier where Abhi is dancing happily underneath and Pragya notices it falling down and pushes him away. Pragya’s veil comes off and her identity is revealed to Ranbir who is horrified to see Gayatri’s real identity is Pragya. He keeps this to himself as he knows Pragya is doing this for Abhi’s well-being. Abhi is saved with minor injuries but the doctor says he may have internal bleeding due to falling down. Pragya (Gayatri) consoles Rhea whilst Ranbir tries to do the same to Prachi but stops himself. Tanu has now divorced her husband and is happy to move on but Alia tells her to marry Abhi today as soon as possible as she knows Abhi won’t accept Tanu (after what she did with Kiara) when he gets better.

Alia secretly plans Abhi-Tanu’s wedding on the same night with only Baljeet Dadi, Mitali, Rhea and the Kohlis present. When Pragya gets to know about it she is unable to do anything. She tells Alia to not go ahead which makes her suspicious. Vikram supports Gayatri and requests Alia to stop because of Abhi’s condition but she doesn’t listen. Ranbir informs Gayatri he knows she is really Pragya and tells her he will support her and encourages her to stop the wedding. After many attemptsthey manage to get the wedding is successfully cancelled. Tanu shockingly sees Pragya under the veil but passes out. The next morning, Tanu tells Alia that Gayatri is actually Pragya. Alia decides to confirm this by going to Gayatri to take off her veil but she learns she has taken Abhi out for the day. On the other hand, Abhi is happily enjoying ice cream with Gayatri who shockingly sees Digvijay’s goon there. She attends to escape with Abhi but the goon catches them and beats up Abhi with a rod. Abhi gets severely injured. When Pragya reaches home with Abhi, Alia takes off her veil and Pragya’s identity is revealed in front of everyone. Alia says she is a curse as whenever she is around Abhi danger follows. She along with Tanu throw her out the house with Pragya tearfully begging to be near Abhi. Pragya prays to God. She angrily begs him to return her husband whilst her prayers are answered and Abhi wakes up with his memories returned. Everyone is overjoyed seeing Abhi in his normal state except Alia, Tanu and Mitali who are terrified as they mistreated Abhi. Abhi announces to everyone he is bringing his wife back where she belongs. He further throws out Alia and Tanu out the house as he remembers what they did. He spares Mitali due to Baljeet Dadis request as she was only doing what Alia told her to do. Alia begs for forgives from Abhi and calls him a bad brother for always disowning her and putting Pragya first which is what made her bad. She promises she’ll obey him and respect Pragya but Abhi doesn’t listen. However, Daadi requests him to forgive her and give her a chance. After an argument with Ranbir, Prachi accepts a proposal from a matchmaker in front of him to prove she has moved on. Ranbir is stunned and instead praises Rhea in front of her saying he loves her a lot and is worthy of him. Prachi vows she will get married before him in order to prove she doesn’t love Ranbir which shocks him.

Abhi goes to bring his wife and daughter home. He happily reunites with Pragya and Sarita Ji gives them her blessings and tells Abhi to look after them. Although Prachi is happy for parents she later chooses not to go with them as she wants to reside with Sarita and Shahana. Pragya and Abhi happily enter their home with everyone’s blessings and Alia does their aarti. However, their happiness is short lived when Tanu arrives with the police as she accuses Abhi of raping her. Abhi is arrested with a horrified Pragya looking on. Pragya vows to free her husband after learning he is facing a long sentence. She goes from lawyer to lawyer but none agree to help her as Abhi’s case is serious and they are not likely to win. Ranbir and Prachi break into Tanu’s house separately and they decide to work together to find evidence against Tanu to prove she is lying however they are caught and get arrested. Pragya bails them out and Tanu warns them all. Rhea and Pallavi are angry with Ranbir for being with Prachi and they berate him. Vikram however supports him. Ranbir are Pragya work together to find a lawyer and expose Tanu and in the meantime Prachi gets closer to Ranbir who tries distancing himself from her; still showing anger. Abhi court hearing arrives which doesn’t go well as Abhi’s lawyer doesn’t turn up. The judge decides to let Pragya go to find him. Abhi is tensed whilst Prachi comforts him but she starts seeing Ranbir tending to Rhea as she becomes claustrophobic and Prachi gets jealous and upset seeing them. Outside the court, Tanu tells Pragya that she killed her lawyer and now no one can help Abhi. Helpless, Pragya fights alone in the court but all the evidence is pushed against her. Luckily, the lawyer arrives in time who is revealed to not have died but was beaten up by Tanu’s goons. He explains this to the judge and shows proof. Tanu’s lawyer also has a strong evidence and therefore the judge decides to release Abhi on bail and schedules the next hearing in three days. Pragya learns that the Mehra mansion has caught fire and they won’t be able to live there for a while. Therefore, the Mehras and Ranbir decide to move to their farmhouse where they stayed in childhood; Pragya and Prachi join them. Prachi overhears and gets upset hearing Ranbir saying to Aryan he doesn’t love or care about Prachi anymore. However, Ranbir was aware of her presence and lied to Aryan. Tanu calls Pragya to her home and shows her strong evidence against Abhi and promises she will keep him in jail for at least 10 years. Pragya begs and kneels down and requests her to free Abhi. Tanu thus puts forth a condition; Pragya to leave Abhi and get him married to her. Pragya is extremely distraught on Tanu’s deal and she gives her time to think about it. Instead of staying with Abhi and the Mehras, Pragya stays with Sarita as she is unwell. Her and Abhi miss each other. Prachi becomes rude to Ranbir in the farmhouse and Aryan tells her to stop hurting him. Prachi tries to apologise to Ranbir but Rhea catches them together and warns Prachi to stay away. Pragya informs Abhi about Tanu’s deal and tells him to marry her and he is shocked. Abhi lashes out at Tanu saying he hates her and only Pragya belongs to him. Although, Pragya is happy hearing this she is disturbed as she knows Abhi can go to jail. She decides to agree to Tanu’s deal which is overheard by Rhea and Aryan. Aryan informs Prachi about the same. Both sisters Rhea and Prachi come up with a plan and inform their parents. The plan is that Abhi will agree to fake marry Tanu and in the meantime he will get her confession as Tanu out of excitement can blurt her lie out. Pragya thinks it is a good idea whilst Abhi is tensed as he doesn’t want to do the pre wedding rituals. However he soon agrees. The Mehra family spend time happily and the parents get emotional to see their daughters uniting even though they dislike each other.

Development and premiere

Kumkum Bhagya has moved beyond the confines of a TV show to become an integral part of our viewers’ lives. Over the past couple of years, Abhi, Pragya and their undeniable chemistry has appealed to viewer sensibilities, making the show the undisputed leader of the Hindi television space.

Filming location at Delhi

The series is a love story produced by Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor under the banner Balaji Telefilms that airs on Zee TV. The show premiered at 09:00 pm (IST) and 10:30 pm (CAT) on Tuesday on 15 April 2014 and airs episodes from Monday to Friday. Ekta Kapoor considers the letter K to be lucky and has named many of her productions starting with K. Talking about introducing a fresh concept on prime time, Zee TV Programming Head, Namit Sharma said, "It takes one epic show to replace another, so you can imagine. It is a passionate drama of love, a far cry from regular saas-bahu soaps and has an ensemble cast of some very talented actors." Ekta Kapoor added, "While two of my shows (Pavitra Rishta and Jodha Akbar) are already on-air and doing immensely well on Zee TV, it's a pleasure to extend my partnership with Zee to a third show. Pavitra Rishta has had a run of over five years now and the journey has been most gratifying for me as a producer. While the audiences who are hooked on to Pavitra Rishta will continue to enjoy the show at 6:30 PM, Kumkum Bhagya will open at 9 PM, drawing maximum eyeballs. It is so contemporary in its treatment that viewers will be able to instantly spot characters out of their own lives in the show. It's a story of passionate love that anyone with a soul would be able to easily relate to".

Speaking of his comeback as an actor, Shabbir Ahluwalia, the protagonist of the show says, "With me producing shows, it was getting very difficult to manage time for acting assignments. But now, I have decided to concentrate on acting. You cannot be away from what you love doing for long. The role appealed to me a great deal. This is the first time that I will be playing a rockstar on television and in order to look my part, I had to ensure that I did not just get my costume and look right, but also get that attitude right that is required to portray a rockstar onscreen."

The production and airing of the show was halted indefinitely in late March 2020 due to the Covid-19 outbreak in India. Because of the outbreak, the filming of television series and films was halted on 19 March 2020 and expected to resume on 1 April 2020 but could not and the series was last broadcast on 24 March 2020 when the remaining episodes were aired. After three months, the production and filming of the series resumed on 29 June 2020 and airing to resume from 13 July 2020.

Casting

Shabbir Ahluwalia, who was also cast in Ekta's TV Series Kayamath, was selected to portray the lead role of Abhishek Prem Mehra. Ahluwalia made his comeback after Zee 20 years. Actress Sriti Jha landed in lead role in the show . Mrunal Thakur was selected to portray the second leading role of Bulbul while Arjit Taneja was cast opposite her. In May 2014, Shikha Singh entered the show as the main antagonist Alia Mehra, while Madhurima Tuli was cast to portray the negative role of Tanu. Later, Tuli had to shoot for her film Baby so, this role was later played by Leena Jumani in September 2014. Actor Faisal Rashid was selected to portray the role of Suresh (Pragya's fiancé) who played an important role in April–May 2014, but in May 2015 he quit the series. Actress Supriya Shukla was cast to play the role of Sarla Arora, while Madhu Raja played the role of Daljeet Arora. Other supporting cast members include Samiksha Bhatnagar, Ankit Mohan, Charu Mehra and Amit Dhawan. Bhatnagar, who portrayed the supporting role of Mitali was replaced by Swati Anand within the month of launch while Anurag Sharma, who also appeared in Ekta Kapoor's Pavitra Rishta, Bade Achhe Lagte Hain, Yeh Hai Mohabbatein and Itna Karo Na Mujhe Pyaar replaced Amit. In 2015, Neel Motawani (who was also cast in other shows of Ekta) was selected to play the negative role of Neel; while in June 2015 Nikhil Arya entered the series playing the role of main male antagonist Nikhil Sood.

In December 2015, actress Mrunal Thakur who played the role of Bulbul opted out from the show and was to be replaced by Kajol Shrivastava, however the character of Bulbul was phased out of the series after Mrunal's departure. In August 2016, Ankit Mohan quit the show so his character left as well. In September 2016, Arjit Taneja quit the show and was replaced by Vin Rana. In October 2016, Nikhil Arya was replaced by Rujut Dahiya. In July 2017, actress Ruchi Savarn entered the show as Purab's new love interest. Mishal Raheja as King Singh and Kaurwakee Vashista as Kiara Mehra entered the show after the leap. Actor Abeer Adil was cast in 2018 as King's cousin Tarun and Roma Bali as Tarun's mother.

Naina Singh and Mugdha Chapekar entered the show as the new leads after the 20 years generation leap. Actor Krishna Kaul plays the male lead post leap.

The series was released on 15 April 2014 on Zee TV. The series also airs on Zee TV HD and Zee TV Asia. The show was also broadcast internationally on the latter's international distribution. It airs in U.K., United States, Reunion Island, Malaysia, Canada, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Ireland, South Africa, Indonesia, Chile, Philippines, Ghana and Singapore on Zee TV Worldwide.

Digital release

In late 2015, the app introduced their "Before TV" service where they launched Kumkum Bhagya's episodes before airing on TV, new episodes were released during 5:30 am (IST), the service was available on a subscription plan. Although the YouTube service was terminated, the channel still release their episodes on the Zee TV website and Zee TV app. On ZEE5 the show airs earlier than on TV.

Spin off

Shraddha Arya and Dheeraj Dhoopar as Karan Luthra and Dr. Preeta Arora, the protagonists of Kundali Bhagya

A spin-off series Kundali Bhagya premiered on 12 July 2017. The series narrates the story of Pragya's two sisters Preeta and Srishti and their attempt to find their mother Sarla and the dynamics which lead to their acquaintance with the rich and famous Luthra family. The show stars Shraddha Arya, Dheeraj Dhoopar, Manit Joura and Anjum Fakih.

Television special

"Kumkum Bhagya – Saawaan Mahotsav" (transl. Monsoon festival) is a special segment wherein Kumkum Bhagya characters will be seen celebrating the Saawan Mahotsav and will recreate a scene from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Pragya and Abhi will be invited to Tina and Rahul's wedding. On realizing how much Anjali loves Rahul, Pragya along with Abhi, would make Rahul believe that he is actually in love with Anjali and that they both should tie the knot.

This special episode stars Rhea Sharma, Vishal Singh, Yuvika Chaudary along with Sriti Jha and Shabbir Ahluwalhia.

The show climbed to Top 5 most-watched shows across all GEC's. After only a few weeks of its launch and was touted as the biggest fiction launch of 2014. The serial is very popular among Indian women. The show also gave tough fight to the long time Hindi GEC leader Diya Aur Baati Hum that aired at same slot on Star Plus. On the reception of the show in such a short span of time, Zee TV business head Pradeep Hejmadi announced that he considered the 'wedding track' a very important inflection point for people to gravitate to the series, believing it to be attracting increasing interest in all parameters. He also added "Each story has its own promise and people who tune in are people who are bought into those promises or are keen to explore the relationships or the characters that stand out speaking to them. We concentrated on bringing out the key inflection points for the show and it was important because it is the core promise of Kumkum Bhagya."

Later, the series further raised to 13.5 million impressions (urban + rural) when the production decided to introduce Tannu's DNA report storyline. Later in the month of August, makers introduced Abhi's memory loss twist and restarted the show which helped to maintain the ratings and dominated the first spot till October. In the month of October 2016, Balaji Telefilms Naagin second season launched and dominated the first spot, pushed Kumkum Bhagya to second spot in BARC chart. In the month of May 2017, Kumkum Bhagya became number one show again and continued to be for few weeks, dethroning the mega success of 2017 Naagin second season. In September, Kumkum bhagya's Spin-off Kundali Bhagya, the story of Pragya's long lost sisters Preeta and Shristi became the most-watched show replacing Kumkum Bhagya. Since then Kumkum Bhagya mostly stayed in second spot. Decline ratings lead makers to introduce Kumkum Bhagya: Doosri Peedhi (Translation: Vermilion in my fate: next generation) quickly in March 2019. Doosri Peedhi helps to make the show number one again in BARC week 14, 2019.

Reruns of Kumkum Bhagya premiered on Zee Anmol from 2017 and got very high ratings in the BARC rural chart when Zee Anmol was FTA. It began running on the network again from episode 1 from 10 June 2020, reason being the return to DD Free Dish.

Soundtrack

The Kumkum Bhagya Soundtrack was written by Nawab Arzoo and composed by Lalit Sen. Lalit Sen had composed the original songs and background score for the show. "Allah Waariyan" is not the song of this show but it was the theme song of Abhi and Pragya. The first original song of the show is "O Rabba Ki Karaan", audience loved the song. The sad version of this song are also released with the title "Tum Ko Mera Dard Dikhna" and "Har Ke Bhi Jitna Hai Pyaar" Sung By Kashi Malik. Meherbaanon Ka Shukriya Song was released on the occasion of completing 1000 episodes and for thanking the audience for the love and support.
