Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by 71.105.243.101 (talk) at 02:50, 24 May 2023 (→‎Today's FA: Vandalism shown in page preview popup). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 05:20 on 2 August 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Errors with "In the news"

Should "American football Hall of Fame" include "American" in the link? As written, it's more likely to be parsed that he is an American and is in the football HoF, but ambiguous about what meaning of "football". "American football Hall of Fame" joins American as a modifier of the game-HoF, so we know that the key part of his identity is "American football". The article's lead sentence has American football as a link. DMacks (talk) 05:58, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Except blurbs generally identify people with their nationality, and it's inaccurate that players of American football are all Americans. Once American is established in the blurb, MOS:TIES implies that "football" is referring to American football, not association football. Another option is to display the proper name Pro Football Hall of Fame instead of piping it.—Bagumba (talk) 06:15, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's a rather subtle point that is unlikely to be picked up by readers. Indeed, when I read this blurb I definitely thought the "American" referred to the football rather than the player, despite the way it's linked. It kind of works either way though, so perhaps not worth changing per WP:AINTBROKE.  — Amakuru (talk) 06:45, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • The current Brown blurb has several issues:
  1. It's difficult to parse, as discussed above
  2. It focusses exclusively on one sport when Brown had several other claims to fame including activism, lacrosse, movies and other media.
  3. Excessive detail – we don't need to be told what position he played and doing so gives the impression that the topic is by and for football fans only
A more rounded blurb might be:
Jim Brown (pictured) – American activist, athlete and movie star – dies at the age of 87.

In the spirit of MOS:ROLEBIO, he's most commonly noted for football, not his general athleticism or lacrosse. It'd be undue to list activist before it, if its to be mentioned in the blurb.—Bagumba (talk) 08:23, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I could probably support something like "American football player, activist and actor..."; I was against this blurb in the first place, but it was fairly clear in the discussion that his activism played a role in his being chosen for a blurb... We're not going to be blurbing every hall-of-fame NFL player going forward I take it!  — Amakuru (talk) 09:25, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
As a big football fan, I can't imagine anyone I'd argue should be blurbed other than :shudder: Tom Brady. Jerry Rice is unquestionably one of the top five players in NFL history, and I wouldn't blurb him. Kicking222 (talk) 12:07, 23 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The "Pro Football Hall of Fame" article says "there are a total of 371 members of the Hall of Fame". That is not enough to suggest he is a GOAT of his sport. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 151.192.123.58 (talk) 04:44, 22 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

That's unlikely to be explainable in a one-sentence blurb for almost anyone. —Bagumba (talk) 06:22, 22 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I would leave it. He's best known as a football player. I doubt if he would have appeared in The Dirty Dozen had he never stepped on the gridiron, nor been as prominent as an activist. Wehwalt (talk) 13:41, 22 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
