Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by 165.225.38.226 (talk) at 17:26, 7 August 2018 (Errors in the current or next Did you know...). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 01:44 on 10 November 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Le Griffon doesn’t look much like a brigantine in the illustration, the article reports that it was described as a barque or brigantine, and most sources on Google Scholar seem to prefer barque...by a considerable margin. (“Barque longest”, if you wanna get more specific.) So why “brigantine”? Qwirkle (talk) 07:19, 7 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

PS “Barque Longue” that should be. (The Apple spill chucker strikes again.) This is not the same as yer modern Bark (ship) necessarily, so both words maybe should be used...or maybe an article with so many issues shouldn’t be featured on the front page. Qwirkle (talk) 14:09, 7 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

"1679 – Le Griffon (pictured), a barque built by René-Robert de La Salle, began its journey to be the first sailing ship to navigate the upper Great Lakes." This is awful English. Why not "the first full-sized sailing ship on the upper Great Lakes" as per the article. Though I note the article itself casts doubt upon the claim - Dumelow (talk) 15:23, 7 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yupp. “Maybe the first thing that kinda vaguely looked like a seagoing vessel, kinda, sorta...” is a better summation. This article never should have been linked to the front page here. Qwirkle (talk) 16:30, 7 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Simele massacre

  • Also, Simele massacre has quite a few maintenance tags in the lead, about the death toll - of the three citations for it, one (Zubaida) says "the total number of Assyrian victims of these events was estimated by British officials at about 600 but Assyrian sources put it at several thousand", one (the FIDH report) doesn't even mention Simele, and the third (a MA thesis) says "hundreds perhaps thousands". Yet these three references are being used to support a figure of 5,000 - 6,000 deaths. I think that article also has some NPOV issues, and given both these factors should probably be swapped out. • The 5,000–6,000 number was put in by an anonymous editor, which I reverted. You missed it in the FIDH report because they use a different spelling. On page 17, The 1933 Sumel massacre, when close to 3,000 people were killed, is a key date in Assyrian political history. I make no comment on NPOV, though. If you feel it's worth tagging the article for, then go for it. howcheng {chat} 23:27, 6 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The article contains the following referenced phrase: " right-wing Youtubers,[2] a user community that has greatly expanded in the late 2010s.[3]165.225.38.226 (talk) 17:25, 7 August 2018 (UTC)"[reply]

  • "... that the mezzo-soprano Carla Henius performed in the premiere of Luigi Nono's Intolleranza 1960 at La Fenice, and had a composition by Dieter Schnebel written for her voice?" We seem to inadvertently have squished two DYKs into one hook. --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 16:56, 7 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • "... that chemical engineer Robert Edgeworth-Johnstone invented a flute made from the aluminium brass tubing used in oil refineries?" Our article consistently uses the verb "developed". So why does MainPage up the ante to "invented"? --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 16:59, 7 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
