Articles not related to Los Angeles

I noticed several articles that have nothing to do with Los Angeles, especially those related to Orange County cities or communities. Other than being in Southern California, there is no other relationship to Los Angeles, either the city or the county. As such, I have removed the WBLA template from them. -- Gmatsuda (talk) 03:53, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

I Disagree with that, this is also about Los Angeles County, sure the Orange County ones are fair, but other communities still belong under the WP:WLA scope. Taifarious1 04:33, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
The ones I removed, (Newport Beach, Ontario Mills and Knott's Berry Farm), are not in LA County... -- Gmatsuda (talk) 04:56, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
Fair enough Taifarious1 09:09, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
There were a few others as well, all outside of LA County and having no other relationship to Los Angeles that I could discern. -- Gmatsuda (talk) 17:40, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
I have created a discussion forum and this is the first topic, to discuss your thoughts about this, go here. Taifarious1 21:39, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
Per the consensus of the discussion there, the discussion should continue here instead. I think it should be here, too. And, Manzanar, in Inyo County, should not be claimed by this wikiproject! It is just too crazy, and it looks bad to be claiming that as a Featured Article of this project. I'm sure that some Japanese-Americans from Los Angeles were placed there, but not necessarily any more than from San Francisco or elsewhere. More Los Angeles Japanese-Americans who were put into concentration camps were put in other ones, because there were many of them. doncram (talk) 05:20, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
Hmm, I did not know that the Manzanar property was owned by the City of Los Angeles back in 1942, when the war relocation camp was opened there, hundreds of miles away from L.A. And, that the site was eventually designated a L.A. Historic-Cultural Monument. So there is more connection than i knew about. I just edited the Manzanar article to reflect the LA Historic-Cultural Monument, as well as to add other info to its infobox. It is no longer owned by the City of L.A. though, it is owned and operated as a National Historic Site by the Federal government, and L.A. has more connections to, say, New York City, than it does to Manzanar. So i still think it is odd to claim this as an L.A. article, although it is less odd than i previously thought. But can we include New York City in the wikiproject, too?  :) doncram (talk) 22:07, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
I just noticed the above comments. It is entirely appropriate that Manzanar be included in this WikiProject because the history of the site is forever intertwined with Los Angeles. As you stated, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power was the landowner until they exchanged 813 acres of the land that the concentration camp was on for other land (BLM land, mostly). They still own the water rights there. They leased that land to the War Relocation Authority so the camp could be built there. And they provide 10 million gallons of water annually to support the National Historic Site now. Even more, the vast majority of those imprisoned at Manzanar during WWII were from Los Angeles. I think that's plenty of justification. -- Gmatsuda (talk) 18:52, 1 July 2008 (UTC)
Orange County ought to be within this task force's scope, so I am adding back the tag. WhisperToMe (talk) 02:57, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
The question boils down to- is the task force's scope limited to only the city and/or county or to the metro area, and if it is expanded to the metro area how will you define the metro area? There are many ways including the CMA boundaries of the Census Bureau. This task force is not very active as far as task forces go, and it failed to live up to being a Wikiproject before it was merged into the California Wikiproject as a task force, so I dont know if the question is moot or if there will be people responding with opinions.Camelbinky (talk) 03:40, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
The U.S. government has ways of defining metropolitan areas - The Los Angeles MSA is both Los Angeles County and Orange County. The Los Angeles CSA adds Riverside, Ventura, and San Bernardino counties. Anyway, this should definately cover the suburbs too, not just the main cities. Other city Wikiprojects generally cover suburbs as well; only New York City is limited to the city itself in its scope. The Houston WikiProject, for instance, covers the entire Houston area. Anyhow, do you think we should cover the MSA only, or the entire CSA? Anyway, I am adding links to this project from the LA County page, so people will know this project exists. WhisperToMe (talk) 04:51, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
I guess that depends on just how strongly the CSA or MSA counties are integrated economically with the city and county of Los Angeles and how much those people in those counties identify with Los Angeles. When doing regional planning studies does the state or federal government or other planning agencies use the CSA or MSA boundaries or do they add in another county or routinely subtract a county. When I first proposed the Wikiproject New York Capital District the other co-founder of the project and I worked out to use the boundaries of the Albany-Schenectady-Amsterdam CSA plus one other county not in the CSA but routinely included in regional planning and within the radio and television broadcasting area. We still ran into some who thought that going by whole counties ended up including towns that shouldnt be within the scope of the project and they wanted it narrowed. No matter how you define geographically this Los Angeles task force (or a revived wikiproject) you are going to find some who will not want their particular area to be part of it because they dont like LA or they think their area is distinct. Pick a specific criteria to use for setting the boundaries and stick to your guns, if you go by counties then include the entire county dont try and compromise by breaking it down further.Camelbinky (talk) 05:26, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
I have decided that Los Angeles and Orange counties only would be the way to go with this. Anyhow, there is a Wikipedia:WikiProject Inland Empire - I asked that project to merge with this one, since the LA task force would be covering all of LA and Orange counties anyway. EDIT: That one covers adjacent counties, so... WhisperToMe (talk) 07:21, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
Actually that wasnt a bad idea, since the Inland Empire is still a part of the Los Angeles CSA, and since they seem to be having a bit of trouble keeping enough people active as a wikiproject and this task force was unable to stay as a wikiproject of its own perhasp joining together you could have enough active members to make it worth being a separate Wikiproject dedicated to the Greater LA area (the Los Angeles CSA borders). Yes, the suburban and rural area editors might not be interested in working on LA articles themselves but collaborations and new blood interested in different topics would help all involved. And then you could have this taskforce as a taskforce of the new Wikiproject and them as a taskforce of the new project as well. More editors the better, and if the only way to get more editors is to expand your geography it may be needed to expand a bit. Just a suggestion.Camelbinky (talk) 16:31, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
In that case I suppose I can ask about it. Thanks for the idea. WhisperToMe (talk) 21:46, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
No problem. I'm glad I could help. I hope LA, as a taskforce or as Wikiproject is able to find more members; this city and county and metro area of LA is very important to Wikipedia and its articles should be of the best quality. I myself cleaned up the Los Angeles County, California article a bit by changing the infobox and some rearranging of photos. I hope even if my suggestion doesnt work for you, that you are able to find some way of solving any problems you may have. Good luck, you can always count me as an "honorary member" and friend of this task force!Camelbinky (talk) 22:46, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Importance rating criteria?

What are the criteria for the importance ratings? What makes an article a "Top" importance article? A "high" importance article, etc.? After looking at how articles in this WikiProject have been rated, I'm really scratching my head. For example the Hollywood sign got a top importance rating while the Los Angeles Aqueduct got a low importance rating? (I've corrected those as I saw fit; you may wish to change that, based on whatever the criteria is). But as of now, a lot of the articles appear to have incorrect importance ratings, IMHO. -- Gmatsuda (talk) 09:35, 25 December 2007 (UTC)

I just saw the importance rating criteria for this WikiProject. Who came up with the criteria? Was there ever a chance for members of this WikiProject to have input into the process for deciding on the criteria? I'm not trying to cause trouble, but I do think we need to revise the criteria. For example (and this is just one), the Hollywood sign is quite famous, both here in LA and outside of LA...it is very well-known. But should that mean it should get a "top" importance rating? I'm not so sure. -- Gmatsuda (talk) 13:34, 25 December 2007 (UTC)

Where did you find the criteria? Sincerely, GeorgeLouis (talk) 06:27, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
Here...
I don't think the criteria was ever put up for consensus...someone just came up with it arbitrarily (no offense intended to anyone). And if you look at the articles, especially those considered to be of "Top" importance, IMHO, many should not be considered as such. IMHO, the criteria for each importance level needs to be discussed and consensus reached for each level. -- Gmatsuda (talk) 09:14, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
Thats ok if you feel about changing innapropriate article ratings, this isint a dictatorship, but I disagree about the Hollywood Sign article, I believe it is an extremely important fixture of LA and its the thing that most people associate with the city. Taifarious1 05:06, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
I agree that it's an important symbol that is widely-recognized. But that, in and of itself, does not qualify it as a "top" importance article, IMHO. It'a symbol. It has limited cultural impact. But that's it. There are many aspects of the Los Angeles area that are far more important. One example would be the Los Angeles Aqueduct, which was originally rated "Low." That makes absolutely no sense to me. And there are many other examples, I'm sure. I believe we need to set some criteria for the importance ratings. How about proposing what you think the criteria should be to get us started on the discussion? -- Gmatsuda (talk) 05:45, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
OK, I'll bite. I'm not exactly new to WikiP; I have done a fair share of editing and commenting, but I just don't understand why we need ratings of "importance." Can someone explain? Sincerely, GeorgeLouis (talk) 06:57, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
I'm not new to Wikipedia either, but I don't know the answer. -- Gmatsuda (talk) 21:27, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

West Los Angeles and the Westside

I am attempting to fix up all the articles relating to the Westside when I find the time. I would like some assistance. Many of the articles look like Original Research to me; just about all need Sources. Sincerely, GeorgeLouis (talk) 06:54, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

We could move it to Los Angeles/West. Agtax 10:34, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Well, the discussion is going on at Talk:Western_Los_Angeles#Requested_move. Sincerely, GeorgeLouis (talk) 20:09, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel

The article for our historic hotel in Hollywood is very weak. It needs a lot more info and sourcing. Secondly, the article is "Hotel Roosevelt". Why Hotel Roosevelt? Check the talk page. ♣DeathRattle101 AKA LUX♣ (verbalizegenerosity) 09:10, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

I took care of the move: Roosevelt Hotel is now a disambiguation page (as is Hotel Roosevelt); the articles are now located at Roosevelt Hotel (Hollywood) and Roosevelt Hotel (New York) and I've fixed all of the links in the related articles to prevent them from linking to the dab page. That should do it. Kafziel Talk 09:36, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
Excellent, Thank you. Now maybe people will be able to find it when they're looking for it lol. I know I had a hard time finding it. ♣DeathRattle101 AKA LUX♣ (verbalizegenerosity) 11:11, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

By the way, does anyone care to help me expand this article? Its very short, messy, and lacking references. There's a ton of information on this historic hotel. I want to expand it. ♣DeathRattle101 AKA LUX♣ (verbalizegenerosity) 12:02, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

When i get back from my holiday I would be happy to help you with the expansion. Cheers Taifarious1 05:09, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
What's strange about the hotel is that on one side the neon sign on top is "Roosevelt Hotel", but on the other side it is "Hotel Roosevelt". Even the building doesn't agree with itself. Minnaert (talk) 17:28, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

That's true enough. Why not put that into the article? The image is right there for proof. Sincerely, GeorgeLouis (talk) 20:24, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

Regions are not "zoned to" schools — or vice versa

I notice in many L.A. articles the phrase that such-and-such an area is "zoned to" a particular school. This is certainly not normal usage. I suggest we simply say that "Palms is within the Hamilton High School service area; other public schools are Palms Middle, Charnock Road Elementary, Clover Avenue Elementary, Palms Elementary and Pacifica Charter" (or whatever). It is not necessary to say it is part of LAUSD because if it is L.A. city, it is definitely part of LAUSD. In short, we must eliminate this misuse of the verb zone. Sincerely, GeorgeLouis (talk) 17:54, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

Actually, that's not always the case. For example, Betsy Ross Elementary School, which is in Los Angeles, served Culver City students, not the Los Angeles residents in the surrounding area. Culver City closed the school as the demographics of the area changed, but to say that if a school is in the City of Los Angeles then it is served by LAUSD does have a few exceptions. -- Gmatsuda (talk) 19:08, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

Today I have laryngitis, but tomorrow I might be able to phone the LAUSD and get the answer. There is no way to e-mail them directly (too much spam, I guess). Anyway, Betsy Ross School was at 12201 Washington Place, which is inside Culver City although it is served by the L.A. post office (Mar Vista). City boundaries and postal areas often do not coincide. Betsy Ross is now a private school, Wildwood. Sincerely, GeorgeLouis (talk) 23:26, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

I am aware that Betsy Ross is now a private school. But for a long time, that area was still in the City of Los Angeles. If I recall, it was annexed by Culver City sometime later, before CCUSD closed the school. -- Gmatsuda (talk) 23:46, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

That strip was annexed to Culver City in 1925. Before then it was unincorporated county area, not part of L.A. city. The annexation-consolidation-detachment map for L.A. is at http://navigatela.lacity.org/common/mapgallery/pdf/annex34x44.pdf. Anyway, this side discussion (thought it is valuable and interesting) doesn't affect my main thesis about "zone to" as acceptable nomenclature for school attendance areas. I am still wondering how it happened to get so popular in articles about L.A. Sincerely, GeorgeLouis (talk) 14:16, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

I must also add that there are parts of LA in Las Virgenes USD. WhisperToMe (talk) 19:54, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

What is "Los Angeles?"

How are we defining Los Angeles in this project? The city or the county? Sincerely, GeorgeLouis (talk) 07:00, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

Based on the articles already tagged by this WikiProject, it's defined by being in LA County and/or having a major, direct connection to the Los Angeles area. For awhile, there were a number of articles dealing with place in Orange County and San Bernadino County that were tagged for this WikiProject. I think I caught all of those... -- Gmatsuda (talk) 07:07, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
Wait... so now we're not including any of the outlying counties? I'm out. Kafziel Ask me for rollback 07:33, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
Why should they be included in a WikiProject dedicated to Los Angeles? No offense intended, but I don't see how that makes any sense. -- Gmatsuda (talk) 07:44, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
FYI: There is Wikipedia:WikiProject Southern California... -- Gmatsuda (talk) 07:45, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
Well, OC and LA are pretty obviously intertwined in a lot of ways but I don't really have an opinion about the scope of this wikiproject. I was just saying I'm out, because when I joined it was under the impression that I'd be in a position to help. I'm rarely in LA, though, so there's not much point in me being here. Not that I wouldn't be willing to contribute, of course, if someone needs something in particular. Kafziel Ask me for rollback 08:30, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

Then we are talking about Los Angeles County? That covers a lot of ground, and perhaps the title of the project should be changed to Los Angeles County to reflect reality. Sincerely, GeorgeLouis (talk) 15:20, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

I don't think we need to get that specific, as long as the criteria is outlined in the project page somewhere. -- Gmatsuda (talk) 00:06, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

This is the place to outline it, and I propose that it be defined as "The city of Los Angeles and those areas that would become the city" like Hollywood, most of San Fernando Valley, Palms, etc., but leaving out Beverly Hills, Santa Monica and other separate municipalities. Sincerely, GeorgeLouis (talk) 19:10, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

I disagree. I think it should be defined as being inside Los Angeles County and any article that has as major, direct link to Los Angeles (for example, Owens Valley, Manzanar, Owens River). -- Gmatsuda (talk) 19:40, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

Then it should be WikiProject Los Angeles County, which I would support. Sincerey, GeorgeLouis (talk) 22:33, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

I don't think it needs to be so specific in terms of the name. "Los Angeles" doesn't imply ONLY the City of Los Angeles. -- Gmatsuda (talk) 22:35, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

Well, I can continue to edit L.A. articles without being in this group, but having it mis-named really offends me. Yours very sincerely, GeorgeLouis (talk) 08:44, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

LA is a state of mind. Sprawl being in the essence of its character, geographic boundaries and political jurisdictions may be less relevant to its cultural identity than is the case for other loci. Not meaning to be flip about it, I really think that as an encyclopedic category Los Angeles ought to be treated fairly broadly. 67.130.129.135 (talk) 20:39, 23 April 2008 (UTC)
You could also legitimately incorporate the OC, SB/Riverside and Ventura area articles by calling it the Greater Los Angeles Area wikiproject, including all regions that were part of LA County historically. (Oops, Ventura County was never part of LA County, but still, it is part of the Combined Statistical Area.) Ameriquedialectics 20:05, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

Defining the neighborhood boundaries in Venice

The Venice article needs a little more detail on the neighborhoods. For those who are familiar with western Los Angeles, can you define the true boundaries of Oakwood and Milwood? Also, is there a decline of gang violence over there yet? Agtax 21:38, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

LACMA Article

I found the LACMA article to be heavy on criticism and very light on discussion of the holdings of the museum and signifcant works of art that one would be able to see on a visit. As a piece of media that one might use to consider planning a museum visit, it is not very informative. For example, articles on other museums, (Nelson-Atkins, the Met, Cleveland Art Mueum, etc.) discuss masterpiece highlights and offer images of some of the artwork.

204.89.11.29 (talk) 23:23, 14 April 2008 (UTC)Robert Avila, 04/14/2008.

i've authored a fair amount of the LACMA article. The museum has had a fair amount of controversy over the last few years, I guess that is what I have ended up adding. I was planning to work on it to add information about the new BCAM buildings, now that it is opened. It can be tricky to add images of the artwork, since often there are copyright issues with the images. I will take a look at reworking the article to include masterpiece highlights & discuss the collection more. Minnaert (talk) 19:51, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
Good for you, Minnaert! Cheeringly, GeorgeLouis (talk) 23:07, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
Over the past few months I've added a fair amount of content to the LACMA article, trying to build up the collections information. If people could take a look and review, that would be great. Minnaert (talk) 02:47, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

Check out this new list-article. The name of the article may change. A description column will be added after May 20, when its candidacy for a DYK mention expires. But, can you add any pictures? Happily, it has more than 50 pics already for more than 1/4 of the 186 places in the City of LA that are listed on the U.S. National Register. doncram (talk) 05:24, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

i think this is a very good article and will add it to the main page under expansion tasks and requested photo. well done. Taifarious1 06:29, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks! The article, now named List of Registered Historic Places in Los Angeles, was a DYK on May 20 with the oh-so-clever (not really) hook, did you know that "... that the City of Los Angeles has 186 sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places?". Cbl62 has kept adding photos, and we have, amazingly over 140 of the 186 sites illustrated by photos now. Also we are starting to add short descriptions, at least for sites that have corresponding articles already. Cheers, doncram (talk) 21:51, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Where is the Talk page for this wikiproject?

This talk page starts off "This is the talk page for discussing improvements to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Los Angeles page." I am confused. Is this like a portal talk page, that is only supposed to talk about the Portal page? If so, where is the Talk page for the wikiproject, where members can talk about their articles-in-process, goals for the project, etc.? doncram (talk) 21:58, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Okay, good, Gmatsuda dropped the talk page header that was giving that message. I guess this is the general Talk page after all. Also, I am dropping the "to do" list header on this page that was linking to a world-wide wikipedia to-do list and allowing for a duplicative custom To Do list for this project, separate from the To Do list on the Project page. doncram (talk) 22:20, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Old Bank District is not a district

The Old Bank District in Downtown is not a distinct district or neighborhood, it is a three building adaptive reuse development. This article should be merged with the Historic Core article. 16:46, 01 July 2008 (UTC)

I have been currently involved in a heated debate regarding the name and the header of {{County of Los Angeles‎}}. Because the creator wants the scope of the template to just list the county's departments, board of supervisors, and other government-run offices, I have been arguing for a more specific title than just "County of Los Angeles". It has become so heated that I have accused him of WP:OWN. Therefore, I would appreciate if others could post their opinions on the matter at Template talk:County of Los Angeles‎#Might need to be renamed to help settle this dispute. Thanks. Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for WikiProject Los Angeles

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! Los Angeles County infobox photo issue

The photo gallery in the Los Angeles County is the same as the one in Los Angeles. My issue with the same gallery in the county is that it doesnot emcompass the landscape of the county such as the San Gabriel Valley, the Antelope Valley or the Malibu areas. Photographs of areas just mentioned shoud be incorporated into the county's article gellery. Any thoughts? Also, after viewing the article carefully, I will resaerch statements that need clarification. --Moreau36 (talk) 17:12, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 05:52, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Message sent by User:Addbot to all active wiki projects per request, Comments on the message and bot are welcome here.

History needed for Cypress Park

So far the history section only has a few sentences about the Stephanie Kuhen case back in 1995. The Kuhen stuff is in proportion to the article and needs to be kept (And I had to explain to some posters that the case had national coverage and significance that day). But at the same time more is needed. Does someone want to add more history to the history section? WhisperToMe (talk) 19:52, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

Changing this project to a task force of WikiProject California

Based on the general project activity level, number of participants, and the overlap of pages in scope with WP:WikiProject California (506/804 ~63%), I feel this project should be changed to a task force of WikiProject California. Right now this would involve replacing all instances of {{WikiProject Los Angeles}} with {{WikiProject California|LA = yes |LA-importance = }} (or something to that effect). It would also mean a lot of what is laid out at WP Med's task force conversion checklist. I'd also like to redo the project page to the same style as WP:CAL and the other task forces, largely because it will be easier to do maintenance on Cal project/task force pages if they are all the same style. Any thoughts, objections, etc? -Optigan13 (talk) 22:50, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

New geobox2 for Los Angeles County

I put Geobox|Region to replace the infobox on Los Angeles County. This allows a much more varied amount of information to be put in and formatted, thus cleaning up the rest of the article. I hope it meets the approval of this wikiproject and taskforce.Camelbinky (talk) 06:06, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

For consistency, all of the California county articles should have the same infobox style. {{Infobox U.S. County}} was recently changed to the same style and layout as {{Infobox settlement}}, which is also used on almost all California city and settlement articles. So I would prefer that you use one of those. Zzyzx11 (talk) 07:33, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

Ventura Freeway discussion you might want to get in on

Folks, you might want to be aware of/or take part in the discussion at Talk:California State Route 134. It's about whether to eliminate the article about the Ventura Freeway by merging it into the two numbered highways (U.S. 101 and state route 34) that make it up.

Here's the background: The members of Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. Roads seem to have it as one of their rules that anything related to a numbered route has to be merged into the article about the numbered route. On March 27 one of them reduced the Ventura Freeway article (14,000 bytes) to a disambiguation page referencing highways 101 and 34, with the editorial comment "article not needed". Someone else reverted that change, saying "Notable topic. You need to gain consensus for such a major more." The original editor then AfD'ed the page, see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ventura Freeway. That generated lively discussion, but when it appeared the consensus was moving toward "keep" the nominator withdrew the nomination, giving as the reason "This is something that needs to be discussed across the board; I don't think this is the place to do it though." Now someone has re-started the discussion on the talk page of the State Route 134 article and they are all talking about a delete-and-merge again. I know I'm supposed to assume good faith but I find it hard in this case; I feel like they moved the discussion to an obscure talk page precisely so they could make a decision in private without wide input from the Wikipedia community.

I happen to feel that freeways which are best known by their name, like the Ventura, should have their own articles under the name. And IMO the fact that a lot of the information thus appears in two places is not a "vexing problem" as one of them called it.

Anyhow, your input on this question is welcome, whatever your view on the subject. --MelanieN (talk) 14:25, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

Los Angeles articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Los Angeles articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Sunland-Tujunga

Unless I hear a really big squawk, I would like to combine Sunland, Los Angeles with Tujunga, Los Angeles under a new title, Sunland-Tujunga, Los Angeles. Although historically they grew separately, they have been considered one community for a good long time now. Sincerely, your friend, GeorgeLouis (talk) 05:13, 28 September 2010 (UTC)

Well, what sources do you have that state that they have "merged" into one community?
AFAIK "Sunland, CA" and "Tujunga, CA" are still separate postal addresses.
Also Mapping LA of the Los Angeles Times still counts Sunland and Tujunga as separate areas: http://projects.latimes.com/mapping-la/neighborhoods/region/verdugos/
WhisperToMe (talk) 07:05, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
Arguments can be made on both sides. For the merger, just a quick look at the links section of the Tujunga article show that all four go to sites that cover both Sunland and Tujunga. So do the first two references, the only ones to printed books. Of the material in the article currently, some sections appear to refer to the broader community, including "Government and infrastructure", "Poetry", and "Station Fire". OTOH, the unofficial L.A. Times mapping project shows Tujunga as a separate place,[1] and they do have separate histories. One alternative would be to leave the Tujunga-specific material here for the historical place, and put the current material in a "Sunland-Tujunga" article. At a minimum, we should say something about how the communities are often treated as a single entity.   Will Beback  talk  07:16, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

The Sunland-Tujunga Neighborhood Council unites the two, as do Verdugo Hills High School and Mount Gleason Middle School. Three hundred seventy-five stories in the Los Angeles Times mention Sunland-Tujunga since 1987. See the list at http://proquest.umi.com.ezproxy.lapl.org/pqdweb?SQ=Sunland-Tujunga&DBId=603&date=ALL&onDate=&beforeDate=&afterDate=&fromDate=&toDate=&pubtitle=&author=&FT=0&AT=any&revType=review&revPos=all&sortby=REVERSE_CHRON&RQT=305&querySyntax=PQ&searchInterface=1&moreOptState=OPEN&TS=1286177016&h_pubtitle=&h_pmid=&clientId=13322&JSEnabled=1 (if you have a library card). Also here's part of a L.A. Times story from 2009:

Sunland-Tujunga is steeped in a history of new beginnings. At the turn of the last century, new arrivals transformed the chaparral-covered land in the northeastern San Fernando Valley into an expanse of ranches and orchards. Artists and asthmatics alike came for the clean air and inspirational beauty. When Steven Spielberg's friendly extraterrestrial made contact, Sunland-Tujunga was his landing point (the house where E.T. was filmed is still there). Today, this suburban community has banded together to fight the "mansionization" and big box stores that threaten the area's rural character.

I will work on a combined story in my sandbox, you guys can take a look at it, and we can go from there. What say you? Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Sincerely, your friend, GeorgeLouis (talk) 07:28, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

Going forward, it seems like "Sunland-Tujunga" would be the article title most coherent with actual, current usage. We can only hope that a more compact name will supercede it.   Will Beback  talk  08:01, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

I posted a combined article, with additions, at Sunland-Tujunga, Los Angeles so that all can take a look at it. Yours sincerely, GeorgeLouis (talk) 19:26, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

That looks great. I'm partial to having more articles, but there are so many articles on districts of Los Angeles (193!) that it's a good thing to consolidate where appropriate.   Will Beback  talk  05:02, 8 October 2010 (UTC)

Then I take it that nobody objects to Redirecting both the Sunland, Los Angeles, and Tujunga, Los Angeles, articles to Sunland-Tujunga, Los Angeles? Sincerely, GeorgeLouis (talk) 22:23, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

At William Wrigley, Jr., I have approximately undone two apparent vandalisms regarding Santa Catalina Island, California. (This was not a simple Undo and there is no report of vandalism.) Unexplained moves of this page

This page has been moved back to the old WikiProject Los Angeles location multiple times without explanation. I'm open to discussing this before myself or someone else moves it back to the task force spot and has it move protected. I feel the Los Angeles articles would best be served by continuing as a task force, for the reasons I outlined at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject California/Los Angeles task force#Changing this project to a task force of WikiProject California, and I haven't seen a significant change in why this should be spun back out, especially as that would require a bot run and a whole lot of other work to switch project tags, etc. which needs some discussion before goes to all the trouble. -Optigan13 (talk) 23:10, 31 December 2010 (UTC)

The only explanation I can find so far is an edit summary reading, "This in not 2009, this in 2011"[2] This reason is insufficient because it does not address the primary reason why it was demoted to a task force in the first place: not enough participants or activity to warrant a separate WikiProject. Zzyzx11 (talk) 23:21, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
Indeed, it's silly to move this without discussion. I'm opposed to the move both in this case (it's part of the California project) and also in principle (edit warring without discussion). tedder (talk) 23:35, 31 December 2010 (UTC)

Los Angeles is one of the largest metropolises in the world, deserves a separate WikiProject. In the last months changed from Wikipedia:WikiProject California/San Diego task force on Wikipedia:WikiProject San Diego, time on WikiProject: Los Angeles. If this is a controversial decision to I'm sorry :( This is my initiative. If most people are against, you can undo my edits. Subtropical-man (talk) 01:19, 1 January 2011 (UTC)
Sorry, but that is just regional boosterism, and I don't feel it is helpful to the articles. San Diego was never a task force. Someone created it a few months ago, and from what I can tell it hasn't been very active since initial creation. I also find it overly specific and adds to the administrative overhead of the California project. Can someone please take a look at the various page moves do a moverequest to sort them all out. -Optigan13 (talk) 07:28, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

Orange County redirect?

I am aware that this issue was decided back in 2006, HOWEVER, I would like to bring up the possibility of having Orange County redirect to Orange County, California and create a disambiguation page for the others. The most famous Orange County is the one in California, an it's not even close. When traveling around the United States or abroad, I say I am from Orange County and people immediately know where I am from, no one asks "which one?" Also, if Orange County is to be lumped together with all other counties of the same name, then we should do the same for the many different cities and locales that go by Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, or even California (there is a California, Pennsylvania). Thank you for your feedback and the support of those who are part of this Wikiproject would be greatly appreciated. --CASportsFan (talk) 06:42, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

There is a photo on Panoramio here. Its license there is not appropriate for use on Commons, but in my experience people who upload to sites like Flickr and Panoramio are often amenable to relicensing images when someone at Wikipedia suggests the image would be suitable for an article. WP:PERMISSIONS has some suggestions about how to succeed in that effort. -- Finlay McWalterTalk 21:37, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

Yes, that is the building I was talking about. I don't like the lede picture. I prefer a clear image like that one I refered to above. --Simon.hess (talk) 22:44, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

This article could do with some work to round it out. There seem to have been some past COI edits, as well as an undue focus on conspiracy theories following his remarks on the 2008 financial bailout and his attending a Scientology event. Some of the biographical material that used to be there was deleted as unsourced some while ago, leaving the article a little bare. Could do with some TLC. --JN466 19:13, 9 July 2011 (UTC)

WP:NRHP is having a Fall Photo Contest running from Oct. 21-Dec. 4, 2011. I'd like to encourage anybody who enjoys photography, as well as anybody who is interested in historic places to participate as a photographer, a sponsor, or both.

One way that an individual editor or a project can participate is to sponsor their own challenge. For example, somebody here might want to include a challenge such as "A barnstar will be awarded to the photographer who adds the most photos to the Los Angeles NRHP county lists of previously non-illustrated NRHP sites." To sponsor a challenge all you need to do is come up with an idea, post it on the contest page, and do the small bit of work needed to judge the winner(s).

BTW, I've noticed that the LA city list National Register of Historic Places listings in Los Angeles, California only has about 16 sites out of 210 that aren't illustrated. It would be great the city list fully illustrated.

Any and all contributions appreciated.

Proposed revisions to disputed material on Occidental Petroleum article

Hi, I’ve been working on the Occidental Petroleum article and posted a draft of some proposed revisions addressing disputed content in a drop box on the article’s talk page following a discussion with other editors. However, activity on that talk page seems to have died out and I was hoping someone from this project might be willing to help out and review the discussion on the talk page as well as my proposed revisions and provide any feedback or changes they may have. Hi! What are some Chinese-language newspapers active in LA and Orange counties in the 1990s?

Harvard Heights, Los Angeles is a neighborhood in Los Angeles, California. It is also the name of a historic preservation overlay zone (HPOZ). The former is described and mapped by the Los Angeles Times, which User:GeorgeLouis considers to be a reliable source. The latter has been described and mapped by the city, which User:Harvardheightshpoz considers to be a reliable source.

There is an WP:Edit war brewing at the above article, with possible WP:Ownership and WP:Single purpose accounts as side issues. It is time to recruit other editors for comment.

During the past few weeks, I have been steadily editing the Los Angeles neighborhood articles, starting at the south in San Pedro, and traveling north. In all of them I have used the statistics and maps of the Times as source material because, well, it is just about the only WP:Reliable source for neighborhood boundaries that there is. All the rest, neighborhood councils and so forth, lack WP:NPOV because they all seemed to be self-serving. There were not many serious problems until I came to Harvard Heights and attempted to rely upon the Times research for boundaries and statistics. I made these changes, by which I defined the neighborhood as did the Times, I removed an attack that the article had made upon the Times's boundaries and I defined the borders of the HPOZ as the city had done, but under a separate header.

Most or all of these edits were reverted by Harvardheightshpoz with no Edit summaries, here, so I restored them here, and I also made some additional edits in which I removed the names of schools and other amenities that were outside of Harvard Heights. I gave reasons for the changes in almost all of the edits I did, which you can examine if you have time.

Again, Harvardheightshpoz made a series of unexplained reverts and changes]. That's when I decided to bring the matter here for wider attention by editors interested in Los Angeles. Please go over to the article's talk page for any suggestions on how to handle this situation. Thank you, GeorgeLouis (talk) 20:38, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

––––––––––––

GeorgeLouis, while I believe your editing of the Harvard Heights page was made with good intent, unfortunately a considerable portion of the information you contributed is factually incorrect. With regards to the boundary discussion, the neighborhood has never included those areas beyond what the City historically designated only later. Local residents familiar with the area for generations have always stated as much. For this precise reason, the local residents partnered with the neighborhood associations to delineate the specific boundaries of the neighborhood with metal sign posts on each street corner, and to further correct any misimpressions created elsewhere (such as through the LA Times Mapping Unit).

In addition to GeorgeLouis' unnecessary removal of certain verifiable information, such as a notable resident and key founder of the LA Conservancy, which GeorgeLouis removed without comment or remark, GeorgeLouis additionally removed the bulk of relevant information found in the Education section. Prior to these edits, the section included all schools - both public and private which serve the residents in the area (and specifically distinguished which were physically inside the neighborhood). GeorgeLouis replaced this information with content which is not accurate and specifically added information including that Pacific States University was located in Harvard Heights, Los Angeles. This University has not been operating in the neighborhood for the past 4 to 5 years, which is a considerable amount of time, and which can further be confirmed with a Google search. Additionally, in the event that any Google maps images were referred to, a majority of the University properties on both Cambridge and 15th Streets have been sold in recent years and presently have been reverted to prior uses. My point is that it helps to have an editor who is local and knowledgable concerning the subject matter being addressed. It may be hard to believe, but online media outlets are not always correct. GeorgeLouis, I implore you to visit the neighborhood to check the accuracy of these statements, and to appropriately help safeguard the content being provided on the Harvard Heights page.

Additionally, I'd like to note that I am a new editor and contributor to Wikipedia, and as such am still learning the ropes. At this stage, I have only begun contributing to content with which I am familiar, so as to be certain that my contributions are relevant. Harvardheightshpoz (talk) 05:11, 2 June 2013 (UTC)

Unforgetting LA initiative / Los Angeles Art & Art History

Hi. I'm editor of a Los Angeles-based art magazine called East of Borneo and I've been organizing a series of meetups to edit pages related to Los Angeles artists and the history of contemporary art as its developed on the west coast. Our most recent meetup was held at the MAK Center for Art and Architecture and was focused on creating pages for women in architecture and design. Our next will take place on Sunday March 9, 2014 at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA). If our project is of interest and you'd be willing to lend your expertise to our events, in person or remotely, please get in touch. Thank you! StaceyEOB (talk) 03:24, 16 December 2013 (UTC)

Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

If you have any questions, want to report any bugs, or there are any features you would like to see that aren't currently available on the Toolserver tools, see the updated FAQ or contact me on my talk page. Mr.Z-bot (talk) (for Mr.Z-man) 05:15, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

Hankook School - History?

I have a source that describes the "Hankook School", but I cannot find an official website. It is/was a Korean-American school in Koreatown/Mid-Wilshire. Does anyone know where I can find more info? WhisperToMe (talk) 13:32, 7 March 2014 (UTC)

That's a toughie. I found this compendium of abstracts [3] which contains an abstract of a UWisc dissertation that talks about a "Hankook School," but it's not clear from the abstract where the school is, so maybe it's a different one. The dissertation does exist. Here is the library record from UW. It's available electronically but apparently only to UW library card holders, so maybe ILL? If that's not feasible for you I can almost certainly get a copy for you within a few days. That is all I could find. There's nothing on JSTOR, Lexis Nexis, or Newsbank.— alf laylah wa laylah (talk) 14:37, 7 March 2014 (UTC)

Thank you. The articles that discuss the Hankook School from the LA Times and the Transpacific (the article by Park) all are from the 1990s. The Park article says the school was started in the 1972. It turns out the Korean Institute of Southern California started in 1972. Do you think Park confused the start date of the KISC with that of the school? WhisperToMe (talk) 04:59, 8 March 2014 (UTC)

Request for copy of master's degree thesis at California State University LA for Spanish-language AFD discussion

Dear Wikipedians,

There is a Spanish-language AFD discussion about the es:Liceo Mexicano Japonés (English article) es:Wikipedia:Consultas de borrado/Liceo Mexicano Japonés, the Japanese-Mexican school in Mexico City. As part of the discussion I want to establish whether this master's degree thesis can be a reliable source:

At User_talk:Alf.laylah.wa.laylah#California_State_University_master.27s_thesis.3F I asked about the possibility of getting this thesis but User:Alf.laylah.wa.laylah told me that the thesis is not available online and is not available in an inter-library loan. Someone would have to go to CSU and manually scan copies of the master's degree thesis, or someone at CSU should scan a copy.

Is there anyone who is willing to do this? I would really appreciate it! This thesis is supposed to have Watanabe's fieldwork which discusses many aspects of the Japanese community in Mexico, including the Liceo Mexicano Japonés and I want to see what it has to say about it.

It is good to write articles about books used as sources by Wikipedia articles. That way readers understand the "story behind the story" about the secondary sources. (example which I have written: Hmong: History of a People)

My instructions:

  • 1. Search a university database like this: http://info.lib.uh.edu - (After entering the book's title, go to the left pane and select "reviews"). University of Southern California has one too! http://www.usc.edu/libraries If you see at least two book reviews, you know the book is notable as per WP:GNG - You can also get a 14 day trial to Booklist and search for reviews there.
  • 2. If you see book reviews, try using Google to see if they are publicly available. If not, use WP:RX to obtain personal copies.
  • 3. Write your article using the book reviews as sources.

Some Los Angeles-related books that may be eligible:

If you are interested, make your RX requests (or if you have access to a university library, get your online sources there) and please write articles on some books! WhisperToMe (talk) 09:06, 12 July 2014 (UTC)

This is a good idea, but very hard to get coordination around. I am instead going to create a Bibliography of Los Angeles, California, which is a common type of list article here, for items that dont have articles. If you want to add publishers, authors, and ISBNs or worldcat numbers to the above, that would help. this doesnt preclude books getting aarticles, but it does make the list more noticeable.(mercurywoodrose)99.101.138.137 (talk) 16:16, 16 August 2014 (UTC)
I feel like those books should be used as references to back up articles about real topics. Unless they are NYTimes number 1 bestsellers--or classics...Zigzig20s (talk) 07:15, 20 November 2014 (UTC)

LA-based people to take pictures for Wikipedia articles

Is there anyone here able to take some pictures of buildings and places around Los Angeles (mostly the West side) for Wikipedia articles? That would be very useful. Please let me know on my talkpage if you don't mind. Thank you.Zigzig20s (talk) 20:51, 6 December 2014 (UTC)

LA edit-a-thons on February 14, 17, and 21

Redondo Loves Wikipedia (2/14), Wik-Ed Women (2/17), and Unforgetting LA at the Getty (2/21)!

Dear fellow Wikipedian,

The LA Wikipedia community has three events in mid-February -- please consider attending!

First, we have a Valentine's Day edit-a-thon appropriately named Redondo Loves Wikipedia, which will take place at the Redondo Beach Public Library from 10am to 1pm on Saturday, February 14. Join library staff, the Redondo Beach Historical Society, and others to help improve Wikipedia's coverage of Redondo Beach!

Second, we have a Wik-Ed Women editing session on Tuesday, February 17 from 6pm to 10pm at the Los Angeles Contemporary Archive downtown. This series of informal get-togethers is designed to encourage Los Angeles women-in-the-arts (though all are welcome!) to contribute their expertise to Wikipedia, specifically expanding content about women artists.

Third, we have an Unforgetting LA event put on by East of Borneo in collaboration with the Getty Research Institute. Come help improve Wikipedia's coverage of LA design and architecture, and have an awesome free day at the museum -- parking will be validated for edit-a-thon participants! If you'd like to use particular books from GRI's great collection, be sure to email before 2/13 (instructions at event page).

And be sure to check out our main meetup page, because we already have three SoCal events scheduled for early March!

LA edit-a-thons on March 18 (tomorrow!) and 28

Wadewitz memorial edit-a-thon (3/18), Redondo Loves Wikipedia (3/28)

Dear fellow Wikipedian,

The LA Wikipedia community has two events in this second half of March -- please consider attending!

First, there is a memorial edit-a-thon in honor of the prolific LA Wikipedian Adrianne Wadewitz, which is being held downtown on March 18 (tomorrow!) from noon to 8pm as a part of the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies' annual conference. Please drop by to contribute your own work or teach other users how to write for Wikipedia.

Second, there will be an event at the Redondo Beach Public Library (following up on last month's session), in collaboration with the Redondo Beach Historical Society. Please join us from 10am to noon on Saturday, March 28 at the main branch of the Redondo Beach Public Library!

Westwood

Hi! Is all of Holmby Hills in Westwood, or are only parts of it? How do I know which places are in which neighborhood? WhisperToMe (talk) 06:41, 27 June 2015 (UTC)

I think they're two separate neighbourhoods. There's also Little Holmby. It is fairly easy to know the difference when you're there. Most streets in Holmby Hills don't have sidewalks, but you can walk around Westwood and Little Holmby easily. They're all in the City of LA, contrary to Beverly Hills, which is a separate city.Zigzig20s (talk) 08:09, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
Thanks! I'll go make a separate template for Holmby Hills WhisperToMe (talk) 08:11, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
Basically Westwood is around and South of the UCLA campus, Bel Air is North and West of UCLA, Holmby Hills is east of Bel Air...Little Holmby is wedged in between Hillgard Avenue and the LA Country Club. Holmby Park is surrounded by Little Holmby to the West, the beginning of Holmby Hills to the North, and the LA Country Club to the East (which then goes into BH).Zigzig20s (talk) 08:16, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
You are not going to make navboxes for all 80+ districts and neighborhoods in LA, are you? I do not think all of them have enough articles to justify separate navboxes. Perhaps just the ones that have a sub-cat in Category:Neighborhoods in Los Angeles, California? Zzyzx11 (talk) 09:24, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
If they have enough sub-topics to make a template, they can. The ideas actually originated from the outcome of a TFD I was involved in: Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2015_April_24#Template:Oakland.2C_New_Jersey_Schools (Oakland, New Jersey is a small municipality, about the size of many LA communities)
For example I want to make sub-templates for Brentwood, Los Angeles, Tarzana, Los Angeles and Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles but I haven't been able to do so, because I haven't yet found enough sub-topics.
WhisperToMe (talk) 01:12, 28 June 2015 (UTC)
The definition of a neighborhood in any city has to be based on WP:Reliable sources, and answers posted on Wikipedia pages are not very reliable, are they? Mapping L.A., which was done after extensive consultation with many interest groups in the city and county, is a good source, and so might be the Thomas Guide or any other organization with an editorial staff. 12:44, 27 June 2015 (UTC)

School templates

In most instances I've been doing comprehensive school templates (mostly public and private schools together) by county. Sadly that's not possible with LA County as it's just too large. It means its attendance is partially or fully determined by a geographic attendance boundary. US comprehensive high schools usually draw students from a particular area. Magnet schools generally draw students from the whole school district. WhisperToMe (talk) 22:01, 12 February 2017 (UTC)

Popular pages report

We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject California/Los Angeles area task force/Archive 1/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject California.

We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:

  • The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
  • The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.
  • The report will include the total pageviews for the entire project (including redirects).

We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject California, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. Move (retitle) page to Los Angeles County Task Force

I suggest retitling this page to cover all of Los Angeles County, rather than just the city. I believe that would give us new life. If you check the interests of the current members, many of them are interested in other parts of the metropolis, like Santa Monica, West Hollywood, and Long Beach. Leave your comments below. Thanks. BeenAroundAWhile (talk) 21:30, 11 July 2018 (UTC)

  • Green tickY Absolutely. You can't have LA County without the other 9 million people. TJH2018talk 00:25, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
  • Agree. I have always considered LA to be a collection of cities within the county, not the City of Los Angeles alone. But is adding the word County enough to broaden the appeal? Maybe Regional might be a better word? I liken County to the other governmental body, Los Angeles County and its Board of Supervisors. Dcoffida (talk) 01:53, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
  • Green tickY Agree, but I like "Regional" even more, per @Dcoffida:'s suggestion. Penny Richards (talk) 02:01, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
    • What areas would the region cover? BeenAroundAWhile (talk) 20:26, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
      • Orange County? Santa Clarita? Mountain Communities of the Tejon Pass? We would definitely have to limit it to the L.A. metropolis. How about "Los Angeles Metropolitan Area," with a list of communities covered? BeenAroundAWhile (talk) 20:35, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
        • My understanding is the U.S. census Bureau includes Los Angeles County and Orange county in its definition of the Los Angeles metro area, but no other counties. One thing to note is that I've already tagged many Orange County articles with this "Los Angeles task force" tag because the US Census Bureau includes Orange County. WhisperToMe (talk) 13:03, 16 July 2018 (UTC)
          • Specifically to User:WhisperToMe, would you object to renaming (moving) the page to Los Angeles County Task Force, which is where I am leaning right now? The reason is that OC has 34 incorporated cities and LA has 88, for a total of 122. That's a lot of municipalities for one WP:Task force to handle. Quite a task, you might say. BeenAroundAWhile (talk) 00:37, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
            • Good question! I'd personally lean more towards "Los Angeles County/Orange County" (if you want a more specific name) or "Los Angeles area" (for a less specific name). While there are a lot of incorporated municipalities both places, many of them are quite small (Industry, California for example has very very few residents), and many live in unincorporated areas outside of city limits. I think overall population is a better way of determining coverage. New York City (city limits only) alone has one WikiProject (while Long Island and Hudson Valley have separate projects), and NYC has around 8 million within the city limits. LA County has about 9.8 million and Orange County has around 3 million, so around 12.8 million combined; that's perhaps a bit more than third larger than NYC. The Paris WikiProject on ENwiki covers the whole metro area, which has around 1,798 municipalities (France doesn't have unincorporated areas), and around 12 million people. WhisperToMe (talk) 04:53, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
  • Green tickY Agree. That way I can add the LA taskforce to articles about Beverly Hills, which is outside the City of Los Angeles...Zigzig20s (talk) 09:11, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
  • Green tickY Including Beverly Hills and West Hollywood and Santa Monica and elsewhere is good. "Regional" is better I think. --Doncram (talk) 03:27, 13 July 2018 (UTC)
  • Well, I moved it to Los Angeles area task force, based upon the fact that most respondents here want more than the city to be covered. Certainly people can determine for themselves what that actually means. Personally, I would not include the Antelope Valley in that, but if you want help on an A.V. article, this might be the place to ask for it. BeenAroundAWhile (talk) 14:18, 19 July 2018 (UTC)

Remove inactive participants

On October 30, 2018, I sent a message to fifty L.A. Task Force members who had not been active. It said: “Hello. I am WP:boldly culling the membership list of the Los Angeles Area Task Force. Some people don’t participate any more. Because you joined more than ten years ago, I am asking if you still want to be listed as a participant. I’ll be deleting those who say no or don’t answer, and then we can move merrily forward.”

Five or those responded, saying they want to remain. They were User:TJH2018, User:Penny Richards, User:WhisperToMe, User:Zigzig20s and User:Doncram.

As a result I have eliminated 46 people who joined more than ten years ago and did not reply to my message. If you are among those eliminated, the best thing to do, I think, would be to simply put your name back on the list.

For the active members, your attention is called to Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Guide/Task forces. Sincerely, BeenAroundAWhile (talk) 03:50, 28 November 2018 (UTC)

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Scope

What area does this task force cover? Los Angeles City, Los Angeles metropolitan area, Greater Los Angeles or Los Angeles County? Jim Michael (talk) 10:28, 16 November 2019 (UTC)

It's amorphous. Not enough people weighed in at the top of the page to make any decision other than "most respondents here want more than the city to be covered. Certainly people can determine for themselves what that actually means." So this Task Force is open to anybody who wants to use it; just relate your posting to the "Los Angeles Area" in some way, that's my advice. BeenAroundAWhile (talk) 21:02, 3 January 2020 (UTC)

Feedback for Bibliography of Los Angeles

Hello, I started a discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Bibliographies#Feedback for Bibliography of Los Angeles about ways the article could possibly be improved. I started it there because there seems to be no activity on the Bibliography of Los Angeles talk page. Please add any feedback you might have. Thank you   // Timothy :: talk  10:22, 19 January 2020 (UTC)

Thank you for this message. I will take a look, and I invite others to do the same. BeenAroundAWhile (talk) 19:28, 3 March 2020 (UTC)

Central Business District

Your attention is called to the addition of this display to the article on the Central Business District, Los Angeles (1880s-1890s). Do you have any feelings, for or against? Discussion should take place on that article's Talk page. Thanks. BeenAroundAWhile (talk) 18:01, 16 August 2020 (UTC)

Here is a better page to visit to take part in the discussion:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Central_Business_District,_Los_Angeles_(1880s-1890s). BeenAroundAWhile (talk) 06:09, 28 August 2020 (UTC)

Dear WikiProject California/Los Angeles area task force,

You're invited to a zoom call, taking place on February 11, with the goal of improving the article on Los Angeles to Featured article status! I often find it daunting to approach the Big Subjects on my own—so if you, like me, want a time to sit down with fellow dedicated editors and tackle something important and complex, this is the zoom for you! I, unfortunately, have no way to transmit snacks over zoom; but I trust you to exercise good judgement and discretion in selecting snacks of your own. Hope to see you there—if you're interested, add your name here!

Notable building?

Anyone know if File:Los Angeles, Buddhist Temple, 2015.03.27 (02) (28752960304).jpg is notable enough for a Wikipedia entry? ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:11, 16 September 2022 (UTC)

To be honest probably not. I tried looking information about the building presented in the photo (Teo-Chew Association), and the only things I could ever find saying anything about Teo-Chew were on websites such as TripAdvisor, Instagram, and Four Square. So at the moment I don't think that it has enough notability to be an article itself. Busition (talk) 03:00, 19 September 2022 (UTC)
