Frankly, you should be blocked for refactoring other people's comments. Hey there

I do know that you have clear views on administration. At the same time, in one perspective of mine, there might be no harm in giving mature editors like you additional tools that they may utilize in times of need to improve the project; and may not utilize when they are editing. Of course, my view may be gravely incorrect. But there's no harm in asking you - would you up for adminship? It'll be a privilege to nominate you. Kind regards. arbcom

How would you fix it? (And why do you have the 2014 box on top of your page?) NE Ent 13:42, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I've had the 2014 box up there so I could find it to review who said what about whom and how things turned out. I'd do three things that can be seen and one thing that can't: 1. Increase speed by cutting evidence time (7 days, no extensions), eliminating the useless and contentious workshop phase, and setting and maintaining deadlines for the final decision process to start and work itself through. 2. Split the committee in half into two work groups with only half the committee deciding each case. The current committee is unwieldy and excessive caseload burns people out. 3. End the secret testimony/secret decision dynamic. Conduct all but the most sensitive deliberations in public with only privacy-related matters open to email evidence and off-wiki discussion. And the unseen thing: come up with a decent system for speedy simultaneous communication. There probably also needs to be devolution of some duties, like ban appeals. Carrite (talk) 14:13, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
BASC is gone, AUSC virtually gone and probably will be officially. We have the technology for simultaneous voice communication which we use with the WMF, but there's the time zone problem. In practice, splitting the commitee in half for cases could end up with a situation, say, where there are only 12 members available so decisions are made by only 4 people. I seem to recall I opposed this before I was elected and still do. Members of the committee differ in various ways, and I think everyone benefits from having the whole committee on a case and I'm not convinced it's any slower. Evidence just a week? For some cases probably a good idea, but not for all. I'd like to see us making better use of the workshop pages ourselves. At times we've posted draft PDs there and let people comment, for instance. But they can go on to long and be used for vendettas, I agree. Doug Weller (talk) 17:12, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. 'falsification of sources'

Thanks for contacting me on my talk page, however I am taking a wikibreak at present for two reasons. Firstly because despite patiently participation I have been unsuccessful in protecting the General Motors streetcar conspiracy article from a load of what I consider to be edits damaging to its neutrality - I went to arbitration but the guidance was not followed by one of the other editors and I didn't have the energy to progress the issue further. Secondly, the workload in other parts of my life has also increased.

As such I am not really going to be a useful recipient of a detailed critic of the article by email (and haven't until now participated in off-WP email discussions about articles anyway). Would it be more useful to either host the research somewhere else on the web and then link to it from the talk page or if the text is small enough, post it to talk anyway.

I note that your comment on my talk page has already prompted a critical and loaded response there which reinforces my view that I am not about to engage with the article again.

Crowdsourcing

An interesting comment here:

One of the great strengths of our board is that we have a culture of open, honest, challenging conversations within the board. People are able to raise controversial points privately, and explore "devil's advocate" positions freely. Live broadcast of board meetings would lead to board meetings that would be like the board panel at Wikimania - informative for the community, but not conducive to deep exploration of issues. In particular, this approach would seriously damage the community-elected board members as they would have to gauge their every word against the public perception. We are a working board of a nonprofit organization, not a political body. Introducing an incentive for grandstanding or - just as bad - failure to speak one's mind on a controversial issue for fear of offending some segment of the community - would not be helpful.--Jimbo Wales (talk) 09:19, 30 December 2015 (UTC)

I must look up all Jimmy's comments about the evil of the 'one best way' or 'command and control' way of organizing things. This seems to contradict all of that. Peter Damian (talk) 09:54, 2 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

In 2010, the Justice Department shut down the illegal collusion between Google and five other Silicon Valley corporations. Geshuri helped manage that collusion for Google. A class action lawsuit settled in September, 2015 forced those companies to pay $415 million in compensation to 64,000 employees whose careers were damaged by the conspiracy that Geshuri was part of. Geshuri was directly involved in the ugly and humiliating termination of a woman who did not comply with the illegal scheme. He was chastised by federal judge Lucy Koh for attempting to pull Facebook into the conspiracy, and threatening retaliation if they didn't. Details can be found at User:Cullen328/Arnnon Geshuri. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 07:14, 8 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Those ludicrous incest articles

Yo, Tim. I note with interest Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Incest in entertainment. As someone commented there, that and the other articles were chopped out of Incest in popular culture. Nearly two years ago, I was one of several people arguing strongly for its deletion at the utterly shambolic Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Incest in popular culture (2nd nomination), which closed as no consensus. If you're game for taking on the other two parts, I'll support you. There's a very strong argument to be made that the "keep" voters were saying "this article can be fixed", and that completely failed to happen until now. Literalism

Hm, you didn't realise Jimmy was such a literalist? I'm surprised: that's why he tried to get rid of me from his talk page the first time round when I used the word "hysterical" in its generic rather than genderised sense. Gamaliel and others arbitration case opened

You recently offered a statement in a request for arbitration. The Arbitration Committee has accepted that request for arbitration and an arbitration case has been opened at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Gamaliel and others. The scope of this case is Gamaliel's recent actions (both administrative and otherwise), especially related to the Signpost April Fools Joke. The case will also examine the conduct of other editors who are directly involved in disputes with Gamaliel. The case is strictly intended to examine user conduct and alleged policy violations and will not examine broader topic areas. The clerks have been instructed to remove evidence which does not meet these requirements. The drafters will add additional parties as required during the case. Evidence that you wish the arbitrators to consider should be added to the evidence subpage, at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Gamaliel and others/Evidence.

Please add your evidence by May 2, 2016, which is when the evidence phase closes. clarification request

I'm seriously not getting what you mean concur with the premise. BLP was intended to be about BIOGRAPHIES OF LIVING PEOPLE, making sure that mainspace is clear of libelous and POV attacks. This implies that the associated talk pages may not be used as an adjunct for such attacks. There are many who have an overbroad interpretation of the principle. -- (indentation and pronouns often confuse me) -- are you for or against mocking politicians outside of article space (on wiki)? NE Ent 20:18, 13 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Depends on the situation, I don't think there's a one-size-fits-all answer to that. If I want to call Donald Trump a "serial liar" or Rody Duterte a "misogynist scum" on my user page or at Jimbotalk, I don't see any logical reason that BLP should apply. It shouldn't and it doesn't. If I go doing that in mainspace or on a talk page, there is a problem with that. Signpost is an official WP publication and it shouldn't be going there. Off-Wiki, say at Wikipediocracy, anything should go without noise about "harassment" seeping back on-Wiki... Carrite (talk) 21:07, 13 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Well the logical reason would be that WP:BLP says it would apply everywhere, but if that were universally accepted we wouldn't be having an arbcom case, now would we? Okay, I think my confusion stems from some ambiguity in how adjunct can be used, thanks for the clarification. NE Ent 21:54, 13 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

An arbitration case regarding Gamaliel and others has now closed and the final decision is viewable at the link above. The following remedies have been enacted:

  1. Gamaliel is admonished for multiple breaches of Wikipedia policies and guidelines including for disrupting Wikipedia to make a point, removing a speedy deletion notice from a page he created, casting aspersions, and perpetuating what other editors believed to be a BLP violation.
  2. DHeyward and Gamaliel are indefinitely prohibited from interacting with or discussing each other anywhere on Wikipedia, subject to the usual exemptions.
  3. DHeyward (talk · contribs) is admonished for engaging in incivility and personal attacks on other editors. He is reminded that all editors are expected to engage respectfully and civilly with each other and to avoid making personal attacks.
  4. For conduct which was below the standard expected of an administrator — namely making an incivil and inflammatory close summary on ANI, in which he perpetuated the perceived BLP violation and failed to adequately summarise the discussion — JzG is admonished.
  5. Arkon is reminded that edit warring, even if exempt, is rarely an alternative to discussing the dispute with involved editors, as suggested at WP:CLOSECHALLENGE.
  6. The community is encouraged to hold an RfC to supplement the existing WP:BLPTALK policy by developing further guidance on managing disputes about material involving living persons when that material appears outside of article space and is not directly related to article-content decisions.

Peer review requested

Hello Carrite. I have followed and studied your work with quite some interest. First of all thanks for your wonderful contributions to Wikipedia. They are impressive. Second, if you have some free time and if you think you might be interested, I wanted to request you to review an article I have put up as an FA candidate. Your views will be valuable. Thank you for the time and thanks again for your contributions too. Xender Lourdes (talk) 06:59, 20 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hullo Xender Lourdes. I don't participate in the FA process because I don't like the way it homogenizes articles (every editor has their own style of construction and footnoting and so forth and it tends to make everything grossly uniform). If the FA process were an ice cream making machine, it would churn out nothing but really disgusting artificially flavored pistachio ice cream. I do think a cricket expert is needed if you are really seeking ultimate input. If I were to make a suggestion, it would be to compress the double footnotes [21][22] into single footnotes, either by dropping mention of the repetitive, second best source, or by using the phrase, [21] "See, for example, SOURCE NUMBER ONE and SOURCE NUMBER TWO." This, I admit, is personal preference and your mileage may vary, but "footnote stacking" [21][22][23][24][25] is typically a sign of tendentious editing, an attempt to "prove" things as true or notable when often they are not. The rule of "one fact — one footnote (use your best footnote)" has served me well.
The possible exception to this would be if you have two facts from two different sources in a single sentence. In these cases, I myself split up the sentence with a footnote right behind the first fact and then use the second footnote at the end: "George Washington had wooden teeth that were painted green,[21] and which smelled, in the words of one contemporary, "somewhat akin to burning dung."[22]
Again, personal preference, your mileage may vary. Keep up the good work! Carrite (talk) 14:11, 20 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Carrite thank you so much. Your effort above has given me a new lesson, which combines the behavioural aspects of how references may be perceived as well as the editor's personal orientation. Like this: [ref name=BLAHBLAHBLAH /> ...... with no footnote information behind it. The opening square brackets in this example should be triangular, of course. Happy editing! Vera Popova

Hi! I'm always happy to help. :) Vera Popova is listed in the Biographical Dictionary as Vera Evstaf'evna Bogdanovskaia, her biography is on p. 153 of my edition. The author is listed as Anne C. Hughes. Let me know if you need the full text of her biography or anything else from that book - I do indeed have a physical copy on my shelf and am happy to scan any pages you need. Best of luck with the article! Keilana (talk) 19:02, 29 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Whoa, fascinating! Best of luck! Keilana (talk) 19:13, 29 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Non-encyclopedic, etc...

Per this, have you any interest in actually challenging the GNG standards for this genre to fit the GNG standard? It's definitely not a swamp to wade into solo, but I think it is a topic well worth discussion, particularly when where we have situations like [ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Women/Article_alerts this one], wherein far too many articles get AfD tagged for, basically, issues of systemic bias in outside coverage. Seems that those folks are being held to a far more stringent standard than needed, while the first group, as you have noted, is held to a far too lenient one ... at the very least, consistency would be good. Montanabw(talk) 18:00, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure that it's worth the trouble, it seems that about 85%+ of the stuff like this run through AfD gets chopped as it is. The PORNBIO standard is stupid, mind you. I reckon if I was going to get embroiled with a Notability change the first thing I'd do would be to get the consensus on schools articles written up as policy. Carrite (talk) 06:14, 2 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The GNG guidelines are all over the place. So frustrating to try and explain that, for example, a Native American artist or writer is significant with multiple published works that are well-reviewed, if in somewhat obscure places, while a pornstar gets an article for... nothing. Montanabw(talk) 03:24, 3 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It is extremely annoying, for sure. The GNG for journalists is similarly difficult to meet before they die. Do you suppose total elimination of the PORNBIO low bar is the way to proceed? Would there be an appetite for deletion of scores or hundreds of articles in the aftermath? The process for making changes is convoluted... Like I say, an ostensibly less controversial change to the SCHOOLS rules would be a higher priority to me and might be a good test of the process. Carrite (talk) 14:42, 3 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I would LOVE to get rid of PORNBIO, let NACTOR cover it. I'll look at WP:NSCHOOLS, what are your ideas there? Montanabw(talk) 22:52, 3 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That makes best sense. As for schools, a statement that secondary (and higher) schools of confirmed existence are notable is what needs to be put into the books. It has been the governing precedent at AfD for years but it is only justified by WP:OUTCOMES, which isn't a guideline or policy. Carrite (talk) 01:18, 4 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Excuse me for jumping in here, but GNG is not a guideline, it is a sub-guideline of WP:N.  Unscintillating (talk) 00:54, 4 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    • Please, Unscintillating, help us at AfD, wherein a one-sentence WPABCEDFG statement is taken as gospel with "outcomes" shoved off as "consensus." I've never seen more stupid and inconsistent arguments in my life, and yet, one's percentage of "hits" is deemed to be an important qualifier at RfA. There are no rules there, other than those apparently decided by AfD regulars. The systemic bias problem is stunning where a porn star can have an article kept, while a TED Fellow and an woman in an Islamic nation who is a University Department Chair of a major university is deemed "not notable." (**headesk**) Montanabw(talk) 03:31, 4 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
      • I agree that an extraction of text from WP:SCHOOLOUTCOMES could or should be elevated to WP:NSCHOOLS, such as "Independently accredited degree-awarding institutions and high schools are presumed to be worthy of notice."  Unscintillating (talk) 06:58, 4 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
      • As for PORNBIO, I think you are pushing on the wrong levers of policy.  (1) WP:Notability is merely a guideline.  Who cares if a topic is notable if we can't reliably source the model's name and age?  The threshold for inclusion on Wikipedia is verifiability.  I wish we could encourage modeling agencies to hire reputable news agencies such as Bloomberg to write biographies for their famous models.  (2) Anyway, perhaps what you want to look at is some kind of an extension of WP:NOT.  Unscintillating (talk) 06:58, 4 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
        • What is driving me crazy isn't so much that too many "models" are included, like this one it's that people who have accomplished far more in their lives are being AfD'd and this problem of a ridiculous number of AfDs such as this one and especially this one.
  • As for drive-by !votes at AfD, things seem to be getting worse, not better.  Take a look at this request, where the admin has not responded to a request to discuss the strength of three drive-by !votes.  An AfD whose nomination surprised me today was on the list you posted here.  This nomination dropped even the pretense of preparing the AfD community for a discussion.  Unscintillating (talk) 06:58, 4 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'm actually super-positive about the process — it is one of the things about WP that works really well. The problem is that way back when the Porn hobbists got a very low bar installed for porn stars, which is particularly galling when one considers the far too high barriers that articles about journalists and academics, for example, must navigate. It's a question of incorrect inclusion parameters, not the debate process itself... Carrite (talk) 21:06, 4 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The parameters are definitely a HUGE part of the problem, and so is the "common law" of the "Outcomes" lists that seem to have morphed out of the woodwork. I didn't mean to start an RfC quite yet, but someone else did, only poorly, so I dove in and opened up the (inevitable) shitstorm). Feel free to pop over there: Wikipedia_talk:Notability#Adding_ways_to_assess_Systemic_Bias_to_WP:N. Montanabw(talk) 06:27, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Ha

Forget the !votes and the arguments, I loved the quality of your humorous sarcasm here :D :D Pardon me if I have mistepped on this, but really laughed for some time when I saw the absolutely sparkling timing of it. Lourdes 17:13, 3 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to James Madison may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "()"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:

News flash

I can put whatever comments I damn well please in bold, thank you very much. You cannot remove the BOLD, no matter how much you dislike it. Frankly, you should be blocked for refactoring other people's comments. Besides, the other comment that's in bold also says "says nom" in bold, so it's damn clear it's a nom comment. pbp 14:03, 18 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
