Sorry ForteTuba, but the bot is pathetic. I have done a lot of work related to the Percy Jackson articles, and so it suggested me a list of articles containing the word Percy and several Language related articles, which I am not interested in. Please try to improve the bot from this state. Thanks and don't take offense. I just gave feedback as a friendly suggestion. <strong><span style="font-family:Script MT;color:#36648B">Pmlinediter</span></strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<span style="font-family:Verdana;color:blue">Talk</span> 15:10, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

: Yeah, one of its recommenders was a straight text-based match. You'll be glad to know, then, that the crash that took out the bot for the summer also killed the text-matching recommender at least for the short term. -- ForteTuba (talk) 13:05, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

If you're looking for recommendations, please go to User:SuggestBot/Requests.

Feedback on recommendations is welcome below. I move older feedback to User:SuggestBot/FeedbackArchive every so often. Thanks for caring enough to leave a note. -- ForteTuba 11:19, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What fun, but no feedback yet

Actually really well done, my list. I'm impressed by the importance of the articles listed and by the bot with articles that intrigue me, but not ones I'd considered editing.

Only two articles were articles I had, considered editing, or even visited on Wikipedia, the one on the Hari Rud, one of the major water sheds of Afghanistan, which I'm reading about right now, and the one on Poison Oak which I'm currently reading a major technical treatise on.

There were a couple of geographical stubs based on my interest in walnuts (Walnut Grove) which it would be hard to care less about. But I wouldn't adjust the bot on this because sometimes a geographical naming is from a major plant in the region. Jamaica walnut was clever and worth the laugh--Haitian music and walnuts = Jamaica Walnut, a plant completely unrelated to walnuts or Haiti, but it's a Euphorbs, so I'm game.

Of the other 30 articles the majority are of very high importance for an encyclopedia, and the poor level of some of the articles is disappointing. I am going to edit all of them to some degree, except maybe the Dale Brown book.

A few were surprising.

Eels? My marine biology background is in pretty much everything but fish. However, I can tell by the terminology in the article that someone made a much-needed effort to include good information about the order, but didn't have sufficient background knowledge to interpret the nomenclature. This I can fix with a bit of reading about eels in current technical reviews, and I can probably get the necessary diagrams to compare eels to other fish in their fins and reproductive systems. I'll also look at the eel life history article.

I know I got British Plant Communities (series of books) because I use British spellings in all of my plant articles from reading 19th century natural histories. Never heard of this series as I don't study Britain's vegetation, but I will check them out at the library--maybe it's the British equivalent of the Jepson Manual or Ornduff.

Never heard of Dale Brown, but it looks like the perfect gutt-buster fluff for my off-classics reading cycles. On this one, I'll probably just thank you for giving me an author to supplement my Michael Crichton, Clive Cussler and Robin Cook books. Maybe I'll write about it, but there are more important literary classics that need articles, so I doubt it. I can't for the life of my figure out how the bot picked this one based on my Wikipedia activities, but I do have a major connection with the book, which I won't share. Does the bot read minds?

I'd never even heard of the Afrotheria, but am interested in elephants, lemurs, and flying foxes, so I'll take a stab at it. The article is in sad shape.

Central Contra Costa Sanitary District is pretty obscure--it's an area I'm interested in, although not on Wikipedia, so I'm surprised. I can make it a worth-while article, though, and will check the related sanitary district articles.

Other than two bombs, the Walnut Grove articles, an excellent variety of articles, some people, major plant articles that I did not know were in serious need of attention, some obscure areas, but all in all articles that I personally am concerned about their quality and can readily fix. Oh, and the Dale Brown, I'm going to get one of his today.

Good job. I think this bot could do a good job providing interested editors with important articles to work on. I think it's better than my original idea of a bot that allowed me to get a random article in an area I selected, simply because it weighed articles with different needs and provided some really important encyclopedia articles that need major work. KP Botany 15:54, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the detailed feedback and the praise for its ability. Not everyone gets as good results but I'm glad you did. As for recommending random articles in a specific category, that's not such a bad plan. I'm sure SuggestBot would be a lot better if it explicitly considered category membership and activity when making recommendations, and it would be curious which strategy would generate more editing activity: random but in a known category of interest, or personalized but across the whole of Wikipedia. It's on the list of "things I've been meaning to do but, well, haven't actually done yet" for a while. :) -- ForteTuba 00:06, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Seriously, is this really something that I would be interested in? I'm not even sure how the conclusion was come to that I'd be interested in that article. Perhaps all of those "PENIS!" edits I've reverted with VP2? o.õ thadius856talk 07:23, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Probably not -- it doesn't look at the actual edit contents, just the articles that you edit. Also, it was in the "add sources" category, which has (relatively) few articles to choose from when recommending work, so you'd expect it to do a worse job there. Or maybe SuggestBot is just a randy little bugger. Thanks for the note, sorry you got that bit of weirdness. -- ForteTuba 00:10, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Avoid by category?

I've used SuggestBot before and been very impressed with it. It's very comics-heavy in its suggestions to me: reasonably so, since probably the majority of my edits are in comics articles. Trouble is, I have pretty much moved away from comics editing altogether, and am looking at a very different group of topics. My question is, would it be possible (I'm not a computer-literate person, I have no idea how hard this is) to add an "exclude category" box to the Bot? That way I could ask for suggestions "excluding Category:Comics", and get only articles that don't fall within than category. Otherwise, i'll need to wait for another few thousand edits before it becomes seriously useful to me again. There must be many other people in a similar position to myself who this feature would be useful for. Cheers for your time. Vizjim 07:01, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Letting people give a better expression of their interests is the number one way I'd like to make SuggestBot better as a useful tool. I'm not sure excluding categories is the best way to do it -- usually people are more interested in asking for articles in a specific category or set of categories -- but the general idea of "leave out articles that contain X" could be pretty powerful for avoiding obscenity, keeping the text-based recommender from getting all excited about one particular word, and similar issues. Thanks for the note. -- ForteTuba 00:13, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Editing my suggestions

I like editing the suggestions SuggestBot provides (like with notes to self). But I don't like the fact that doing so alerts me to a new message, which is essentially notification of an unsigned edit on my talk page that looks like this —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Keesiewonder (talkcontribs) 00:25, 9 December 2006 (UTC). The following also appears in the edit summary:(Keesiewonder didn't sign: "- →Articles you might like to edit, from SuggestBot - "). Is there a way to shut this notification off? Keesiewonder 00:24, 9 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That was an edit by HagermanBot, which watches for unsigned edits on talk pages and signs them. Its behaviour has recently been changed, though; it now ignores a user's edits to their own talk page, so this should no longer happen – Gurch 05:40, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the note on that, I was wondering whether SuggestBot was doing something wrong. -- ForteTuba 00:14, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, this didn't work for me (But it could for you!)

Yeah, out of the 34 articles, there was one I already knew I would like to edit, and four are interesting-ish to me. The main thing that stood in the way of a sucessful suggestion was that I attempted a few months back to disambig Sonic the Hedgehog links; I'm not really interested in Sonic, but I figured I would at least understand that subject. And Sonic articles filled the suggestion--along with some political articles (?) and articles related to Yum! Brands—which I think I edited before the summer (it's now December). Well, it was worth a shot, and I may end up editing some of these.

Thank you SuggestBot (and ForteTuba!)! —ScouterSig 15:44, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note. It does have a tendency to get wrapped around the axle, especially when there is a large set of articles that link to each other or a word that appears in just a small set of articles. Hopefully you did wind up editing a few, and it was useful... -- ForteTuba 00:18, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm... first glance doesn't look so good...

Thanks for running the suggestions. At first glance, the articles don't really seem to be in line for my interests. I'll follow the rabbit trail and see what can be done on them.

It looks like some people have had success with the bot, so I encourage you to continue! --Paul McDonald 03:33, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry it didn't work out so well for you. Any hypotheses on how it got confused for your interests? -- ForteTuba 00:19, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestions and Feedback

Here's my results, and appropriate feedback...

Stubs
Bihar Vikas Party

I cannot make any connection to this. Perhaps my minor edits on the jewellery page with spelling corrections, vandalism, and removing Indian company additions had something to do with it?

Valley of the Damned (Demo)

Good stuff!

Findings

Related to the jewellery article. I changed all instances of "jewelry" to "jewellery", and reverted things. Perhaps something that could differentiate "minor" edits from major edits?

Jelly Jam

This is okay, however I know nothing about it. A band related to a band I like.

Andy Strachan

This is okay too, I just have no idea about how to proceed.

Extension of the Wish

I know nothing about this, but maybe edits I've made which involve power metal and progressive metal have something to do with it.

Platypus (band)

This is okay as well, although I know nothing about it.

Bizzar

Haha, this is nearly an insult; but nah, I've never made any edits even related to this.

Erriapo (moon)

Maybe my reversions and spelling corrections to the Saturn article; I know nothing about it, only minor edits.

Gerry Lindgren

I can honestly make no connection here. I know nothing about Americans, let alone American sports.

Thunderstone (band)

Very good! I'm in the process of fixing up this.

Mabool

Didn't even know this was a band. I'm not sure what could cause this to be suggested.

Grisoft

No idea why this was suggested either.

Martin Lopez

Good stuff; although I'm not sure how to proceed.

Henrik Klingenberg

Good stuff; although I'm not sure how to proceed.

MullMuzzler

Another band that's related to a band I like, but know nothing about. Same as above.

Paaliaq (moon)

Same as Erriapo.

Always & Forever

Don't know how this appeared, I'm not into country music or anything.

Per Wiberg

Good stuff, but I'm not sure how to proceed.

Cleanup
EditPlus

Maybe the same as Grisoft? I'm not sure how this appeared.

Jordan Rudess

Good stuff!

Drilling and threading

No idea how this appeared.

Merge
Points of Authority

Never did anything related to Linkin Park or nu-metal.

Load (album)

This is good, although I disagree with the merge.

Tellum

Never heard of this before.

Add Sources
Kevin Moore

Good stuff, I'll do this soon.

Jaska Raatikainen

Same as above.

Jason Newsted

Same as above.

Wikify
EZ-Street

Seems an okay suggestion; just I've never heard of it before.

Smoking cessation

Never made anything related to this.

Costa Maya

Never heard of it or anything related.

Expand
United States Federal Witness Protection Program

I know nothing about the United States, nor about the law. No idea what I did for this.

Presents G.H.E.T.T.O. Stories

No idea about this either, never made edits even related to it.

Congo River

Same as above.

Basically, what I'm wondering is if it's possible to differentiate noted minor edits, from edits that aren't checked with the minor edit. That way, checking the minor edit checkbox would be more useful, and it would help differentiate from simple spelling corrections and vandalism reversion, from actual article editing. That's about all, this has gotten me more into editing Wikipedia, thanks. --Dayn 09:40, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

That is a lot of detailed feedback. Looks like it hit for you about 1/3 of the time, which is probably "good enough" -- and I'm glad a) that you did a fair amount of editing and b) that it encouraged you to be more of a contributor. That was its original purpose in life and although I think more power users play with it for fun than newer folks use it, it's good to hear that it helps some people out that way. As for minor edits, I've been ignoring them for some people and not ignoring them for others for a while now. Initial experiments suggested that ignoring minor edits makes no difference, although I've got a lot more data now that I should sit down and analyze. Thanks for the note. -- ForteTuba 00:21, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mostly very helpful, but a couple really far-out suggestions

Um, well I usually correct typos, occasionally contribute a stub or two on science, and also correct some misinformation on music pages sometimes. So, I was unpleasantly surprised when ejaculation showed up on my suggest page. I never, ever go near sexual pages, so I deleted that from my talk page. None, by any stretch of the imagination, of my edits even could have been linked to anything remotely close to something slightly sexual, so... I have no clue where that came from. Happy8 03:07, 20 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about that. This happens to other people too; SuggestBot I think has a tendency to recommend articles that are edited more often than others, and sexual topics probably tend to get edited more often by the Beavis crowd. Weirdly, it was the text recommendation strategy that gave you the article in question, and it's not affected by popularity. So I have no clue either. Sorry again. -- ForteTuba 00:27, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent work

I am surprised that this wonderful work was done by a machine (although not 100% accurate). Of 34 articles, I didn't like 2 which are: Videos of Osama bin Laden and Wapedia.

--Meno25 04:46, 23 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nice, glad that it was almost all reasonasble stuff for you. :) -- ForteTuba 00:28, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not bad

Not bad but maybe a bit more variety would be nice I ended up with about half the suggestions being singles, albums or band members from the band Nightwish. Maybe you can set it up so that if it comes up with music related articles it picks some articles in the same genres but unrelated to each other. Also I don't get why it was Ejaculation suggested I checked my list of edits in case I fixed a typo or something and I can't figure out how your bot came up with this. Rainer1 07:22, 26 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, some of the algorithms get captured by pages that link to each other a lot, or pages that are often edited. Unfortunately, Ejaculation falls into that category and it had a work-needed tag on it, so it became prone to being suggested. -- ForteTuba 00:44, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Responded on your talk page, but the short answer is: no, no current way to be a regular subscriber. I want to put in code that keeps it from recommending the same article over and over first. -- ForteTuba 00:31, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It has to stretch sometimes, especially for kinds of work with relatively few articles (the ones on the right side of the list). Hope it was at least somewhat useful for you, thanks for the note. -- ForteTuba 00:38, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My list...

Well, most of the articles seem very interesting, but then I saw Fart and Playboy! I have no interest in that, and I have no idea how that got into my list. Hehe, that was funny. :-) AndonicO Talk | Sign Here 15:11, 9 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently, SuggestBot is a bit of a cad -- other people get these kind of "fun" suggestions too. It has a habit of recommending articles that are more often edited because of how its algorithms work, and the Beavis crowd tends to edit those a lot. Glad you found it funny, though, rather than annoying. :) -- ForteTuba 00:40, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Really, it would make sense to prevent users from adding anybody other than themselves to the list - but I guess there's no wiki mechanism to impose such a constraint.--Niels Ø (noe) 15:03, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

last 500 only?

On the User:SuggestBot/Requests page it says:

Example:
User:ForteTuba
will grab ForteTuba's (up to 500) most recent edits and make suggestions based on them.

I was wondering if this bot still limits itself to 500 or if that range has been improved. I just posted a request on that page, but I'm worried that I should have done so sooner, as few if any of my last 500 edits were actually related to the content of articles I'm interested in. I think it would be more meaningful if it looked at all edits and disregarded pages that a user has only edited once or twice. — CharlotteWebb 11:30, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The idea of grabbing the full profile and deciding what are the "important" edits would be fun -- that's an interesting problem in recommender systems in general. It probably isn't as easy as focusing on articles that someone edits more than once, though. For instance, I bet there is serial vandalism of articles, for instance, that one person might revert many times. But I don't know. The "right" thing to do, probably, is let people specify their interests more directly (but this is more costly to do than just listing your username). It's on my "to-do" list. -- ForteTuba 18:30, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Weight similar (minor) edits less?

As you mention in "last 500 only?", the idea of what constitutes an "important" edit needs some work. SuggestBot's recommendations for me were mostly tornado-related articles, due to the fact that I recently spent a lot of time disambiguating the three Palm Sunday tornados by hand, which meant I was touching a lot of tornado-related articles. (Funny enough, it's true that I probably should go through and copyedit all those miscapitalized tornado articles, but I was hoping for more variety in the suggestions!)

One easy solution to this problem would be to ignore or downweight "minor" edits. Or maybe you already do that, but a large quantity of related minor edits can outweigh a few scattered major edits? A trickier solution would be to look for and ignore edits that only change one or two words, or add a template, even if they're not "minor". I mention templates because two more of SuggestBot's suggestions were Live.com and Windows Live Local, due to the fact that I tagged a lot of Windows Live stubs for merge a while back.

I strongly urge you not to let people specify their interests more directly; if they knew their editing pattern already, they wouldn't need SuggestBot! ;) The surprise is part of the fun. --Quuxplusone 20:14, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good bot, but...

Some of them are absolutely off-topic to my interest. My interests are gaming, environmental science, and anime. However, it suggested some singers that I never heard of. I did an edit on my school before, and it recommends me to fix up some other school's stub topic. It is quite unreasonable for me to add more contents without going to those school, isn't it?

Overall, I'll give it 8.5 out of 10. Keep up your good work!

Overall, not too shabby, but a suggestion

I'm not sure where articles like Fart and FahrenHYPE 9/11 came from, but otherwise fairly on the mark. Here's what I noticed, though, looking through the suggestions: since I do lots of editing to the Halo (video game series), lots of the links like the HALO trust and Halo (medicine) are related to halo, insofar as a non-disambig term. so if suggestbot could differentiate between these, that would make it a lot better. I posted myself once for suggestions; the results were very mixed - which of course is exactly what they should be. As far as I can see, I was de-listed once I'd got my first batch of suggestions. Could the list at User:SuggestBot/Requests be divided into two, one for people wanting suggestions once only (so they'd have to re-list themselves manually for more), and one for people wanting suggestions every week for the next three months, say, at the end of which the bot should drop a note on their talk pages reminding them to re-list themselves if they still want suggestions? --Niels Ø (noe) 09:47, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Automated message to bot owners

As a result of discussion on the village pump and mailing list, bots are now allowed to edit up to 15 times per minute. The following is the new text regarding bot edit rates from Wikipedia:Bot Policy:

Until new bots are accepted they should wait 30-60 seconds between edits, so as to not clog the recent changes list and user watchlists. After being accepted and a bureaucrat has marked them as a bot, they can edit at a much faster pace. Bots doing non-urgent tasks should edit approximately once every ten seconds, while bots who would benefit from faster editing may edit approximately once every every four seconds.

Also, to eliminate the need to spam the bot talk pages, please add Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard to your watchlist. Future messages which affect bot owners will be posted there. Thank you. --Mets501 05:08, 22 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough, thanks for the note. I've always been exceedingly cautious in both my editing rates and page request rates, I figure there are plenty of people who want to get at the pie. -- ForteTuba 21:53, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bad

SuggestBot told me this and it is absolutely unsatisfactory. Only some Argentina-related and greek-related, but the rest is totally useless to me: Prince (musician) (I suppose because I edit Bowie-related articles some times), Playboy (???), Ejaculation (because reverting vandalism??), Zorbas... Nope... Maybe SuggestBot needs to read userboxes. --Neigel von Teighen 08:47, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not trivial to read userboxes, it turns out. It does have a tendency to get controverial/oft-reverted pages. It also doesn't have as many things to choose from in the non-stub categories so it tries. Sorry it didn't work so well for you. -- ForteTuba 05:42, 11 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good

Mine worked just fine :-) Ideas on how to improve wikipedia's idea of the Kansas area, as well as some videogame related articles. For the most part, I like it. ----Steve 21:18, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There's a place for requesting periodic suggestions if you want to sign up there. It's a nasty kludge (smarter distribution would be better) but it'll have to do for now. -- ForteTuba 05:43, 11 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Meh

I was not too impressed with my suggestions: an awful lot of colors resulting from one recent visit, though granted I did fix up the wording in some; state parks because of NW Hawaiian Island's prompted by a Cousteau documentary; no chemistry (maybe DOT 5) or sci-fi despite many edits. I definitely agree with the "read user boxes to get a clue". I do acknowledge though, that coming up with good recommendations for someone with my apparently varied edit history is non-trivial. I read lots of random things, and will generally edit boldly, but the things I really care for don't necessarily coincide with this. --Belg4mit 05:04, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As stated above, reading userboxes is a non-trivial endeavor (though there are a few people here doing some related work around them, and maybe I'll be able to use some of that eventually). Grabbing all the links on one's user page might be a reasonable compromise -- people sometimes list their main contributions there. I'd really like if there were a handy way for people to give their interests because, as you say, when there's a wide range it's hard to make good coherent suggestions, and it would probably do a lot better if people could just say "use these articles to represent my interests". -- ForteTuba 05:50, 11 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

pretty cool

The only ones which seemed out of the blue were Jean-Michel Saive, Allan Cutler and Lloyd Cutler. I assume that these were picked because I'd edited Ivor Cutler and Jean-Michel Basquiat. They may have similar names but they aren't really related at all. --Rider kabuto 10:09, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, the text similarity algorithm musit have found those based on the matching name parts... -- ForteTuba 12:52, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good recommendations, but many unrelated to my interests

While the suggestions were very relevant to my edits, what I found was that after adding an external link to an etymology site, the majority of my suggestions were etymology-related, and while I had recently started three bird-related articles, I only received a few bird related suggestions. Australian Raven 18:55, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like the recommender that looks at links between articles got hung up on the etymology part. Sometimes it gets confused when a set of articles are tightly linked to each other (most notably, when a category has a template that includes a bunch of links to other articles in the category). -- ForteTuba 12:58, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Articles marked as "needing work"

This should be an option that you can turn off. You should also be able to get a selection of articles for you to edit that have not been specifically marked as stubs or otherwise needing work. -Mike Payne 15:32, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Early versions of SuggestBot had this and people didn't edit very much... I might put it back someday, if I ever get time to finish rebuilding it. If it's any consolation, over a third of the articles are marked as stubs. Thanks for the note, I'll keep it in mind. -- ForteTuba 13:01, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Contributing

I would like to contribute to pages that have lots of typos. Do you know of any? --Yummie 18:35, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The most likely place to find those would be in the cleanup category. You also might check out Wikipedia:Typo, there appear to be a number of people who are listed as interested in working on them. -- ForteTuba 13:10, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestions for WikiProjects

You could do suggestions for WikiProjects. I'm not sure how this would work, but you could at least go through the pages associated with each one, and pick some random pages of the appropriate type for merging, etc.

Also, I've worked on 3 things. First, I worked on some fashion articles, then some guitar articles, and now I'm working on Wikipedia:WikiProject Calvinism related articles. If there was some way to say "show me things that I might be interested in that are related to this". For example, if I picked Calvinism, you could do your suggestions for me as per normal, but then winnow them to remove ones that aren't related to Calvinism in some way (even if it's indirect).

Ideas...  :)

-- TimNelson 12:56, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Very relevant, but with some bugs (?)

The suggestion were very good, but:

 • The bot listed List of modern weapons by country as a stub, although it is not. The article consists of many sections with very little text - that's why the bot thought it to be a stub. However, there are no stub tags, and it is a list, it should have little text.
 • Leap of Faith (film) was categorised as 'In need of clean-up', but it is not (however, the article could have been cleaned by someone else).

But this is not much - the bot is excellent, thank you very much for it! --Alexander Iwaschkin 07:44, 30 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I get excited when I see my new suggestions from Suggestbot.

I've seen people on Wikipedia that claim that tagging articles is "pointless" because the only people that see it are people who are interested in the article and "they would have seen it anyway". SuggestBot makes those tags more useful, at the very least. I've had a few odd suggestions, and on my second run I got a few repeats, but on my third (I'm on the periodic suggestion list) I got no repeat suggestions (to my surprise) and I felt like most of them were appropriate to my interests. Those that weren't, seem to be related to some other work I was doing and I can live with a few wild card suggestions.

Of course, I have less than 500 edits (which might make things easier), and I tend to make edits of SOME sort to many of the articles Suggestbot suggests (even if I don't fix the problem, I figure -- in the end -- every bit helps).

My main concern is that when I hit the 500 edit mark, I intend to join Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser and I'm worried that will mess up my suggestions. Do you think it will be possible to remove those edits from the suggestions, or should I just be ready to accept some more wild-cards?

Thanks for a very useful bot! Curtangel 00:02, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

History filter

I think that it could have a history filter so those who are reverting "random" vandalism don't have article topics that they don't like on their list. Like, for example, have it (intelligently) filter out all articles with "revert", "with TW" and others. One example it that I don't like all those guitar bands and hard metal and etc. and it gives me things with that topic. Thanks. Sincerely, Sir intellegent - smartr tahn eaver!!!! 20:22, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. Whilst the vast majority of my suggestions were good (not too hard -- probably about 90% of my real edits are to computer science articles), there were a fair few bizarro-world ones presumably based on my reverting vandalism. That said, it's pretty good for a machine and I now have a list of articles I can go tinker with. Thanks! Angus Lepper(T, C, D) 14:52, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'd like to put in a request for this feature as well. Heck, you don't even have to create the list of patterns to match against the edit summary -- we could maintain it as a wiki page, like Wikipedia:Lists of common misspellings/For machines or User:Lupin/badwords. Iknowyourider (t c) 00:40, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pretty Good, Overall, But...

The bot puts a little too much emphasis on the name. For example, I enjoy editing comic pages, so I decided to do a little work on Calvin and Hobbes. The list the bot gave me had around 6 pages about people named Calvin, all of which were people I have never heard of before. I also did a few edits on Sojourner Truth, so the bot suggested me to work on the Sojourner-Douglass College page. Overall, though, this is a pretty good bot! Surprisingly Bad

I'm sorry to have to be one of the few guys who didn't give positive feedback, but here it goes, anyway. I did receive a couple of articles that I might edit a little, such as Uploading and downloading, Multi-source, and Sea-Monkey, but a majority of the articles that were suggested were completely off-base. I mainly edit video game- and movie-related articles, but I also do a lot of commenting on Articles For Deletion and Contested Candidates for Speedy Deletion, so I think most of the suggested articles came from those edits. Stuff like some individuals in professions I care nothing about and John Doe guitarist. My suggestion is that SuggestBot should not take edits from Articles For Deletion and other such tasks, because it taints the results. I don't know if that can be done, segregating the types of edits, but I just thought I'd mention it. Useight 18:05, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Greater variety?

One way to improve SuggestBot would be to generate a list of suggestions with a greater variety of topics. I'm not sure how SuggestBot works, if it sifts through categories or searches for keywords, but whatever happened I didn't get a lot of variety. The articles fell into three main groups: (a) 11 Desperate Housewives actors and directors, most of whom I've never heard of - I revamped the episode list in mid-July; (b) 8 Agatha Christie novels and film adaptations, most of which I'd never heard of - I reverted insignificant vandalism once on one page, and did a minor reference correction on another, but that's it; (c) Things that were completely irrelevant, as far as I could tell, to anything I've ever done, let alone the last 500 edits, such as Star Trek and Stargate. (I assure I've never been anywhere near those articles before!) Anyway, thanks. •97198 talk 08:25, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

YEAH! for SuggestBot

I just got my suggestions, and they rock. Topics that I was unaware of previously and that do interest me. In looking at all the negative comments above it seems that they have in common that prior to using suggestbot they spent their time on articles about which they had little knowledge or enthusiasm, and then were disappointed that the computer program extrapolated on that same trend.~~ Michael J Swassing 17:50, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Stub or not to stub?

I've signed up for regular suggestions, and the latest one recommended I work on the stub City of Death. And while it's certainly an article that could interest me (and it does need some work on it), it's definitely not a stub, being of a reasonable length. It's certainly not been accidentally categorised as such, so I'm not sure what went wrong. Anyhow, thought you'd be interested in the discrepancy. Cheers. --Mark H Wilkinson (t, c) 18:56, 27 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You gotta program SuggestBot not to put sex articles on users' pages, somehow, if they've never edited articles in this area. I had no idea what it was, but a quick glance at the page said I don't want to know. Aren't these articles categorized as sex something or other? If SuggestBot is looking through my contributions, it can see that I've never edited anything in sex categories--outside plant sex, and this wasn't plant sex. And because the article came with no clues as to what it was about, without my reading the article, and I'm unwilling to read it, .... KP Botany 04:07, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've got a suggestion

While you're bot works fine, and great, there's one problem. I decided to do RC Patrol a little while ago, and it became a major part of my contributions. Well, soon I noticed that SuggestBot was giving me articles about things I'd never heard of, nor cared about. So I wanted to inquire if you could keep SuggestBot from reading edits with summaries like RV, or Reverted to last revision by so and so. I just wanted to let you know about it, it's not that urgent, because I'm not doing as many RC patrols anymore, but I thought it might help. If you don't think it's necisary just blank this comment or ignore it.--Kkrouni/こかるに/Ккроуни/ΚκρΩυνι 19:53, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Picks up vandalism reversion

Hi. First of all, thank you for the suggestions. However, out of the suggestions I got, only 3-4 were actually useful to me. I do RC patrol sometimes where I mainly revert obvious vandalism. It appears that these articles (about which I know little to nothing) were picked up by the bot and included in the edits analysed before suggesting topics. Thus the suggestbot results were mostly useless to me. Correct me if I am wrong (I am a relative newbie to wikipedia), but perhaps there should be an option where suggestbot can ignore reverts while analysing contributions? Thanks again! vineetcoolguy 01:31, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Let's take this feature a step further, if possible, which is to avoid single instance edits. Perhaps only focusing on articles which have been edited at least 2...3...4 times? Tiggerjay 07:47, 14 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

All in all I'd give SuggestBot a 9 out of 10. There were a few weird ones (but I sort of expected that, as I often edit by the RAndom Article button), but even topics I know nothing about I can edit the grammar and formatting of. I haven't done feedback for all them, since I've only looked at about 1/2, but on the things that I've edited/looked at, it works great! Keep up the good work! θnce θn this island Speak! 13:21, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Updating database

I noticed that the last few times SuggestBot has given me some suggestions, it seems to have not checked its list. For example, Mare (horseracing) is still listed as a stub, even though the stub tag was removed (by me) a long time ago and the article has been merged with Mare (horse). SuggestBot may want to be a little more careful to use the most current data! Oh, and by the way, SuggestBot is about a 9.99 out of 10 for nailing precisely the general area where I do work on wikipedia. The occasional weird suggestions probably do reflect some random stuff I worked on. Montanabw(talk) 23:24, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, it doesn't update lists of work often enough, for sure. Partly a laziness issue, partly an effort to not hit Wikipedia too hard, partly my (old) version of pymediawiki doesn't parse some of the lists-of-needing-work pages well. It's on the "to fix" pile. -- ForteTuba (talk) 17:44, 23 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Is there anyway to adapt SuggestBot to the purposes of a Wikiproject ? Say to suggest pages containing specific themes or sections? Daoken 05:25, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This will happen eventually, it's in the pipeline. -- ForteTuba (talk) 17:42, 23 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Adapting this to WikiProject use would be very useful. I will try a SuggestBot project subpage, initially based on my personal results, to replace the current project task suggestions prepared manually and updated infrequently at best. I'll let you know how it works. -- Paleorthid (talk) 15:15, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Overall, this is a great bot, my only criticism is that its logs need to be updated more frequently (monthly at the VERY least), especially for the Stub section. How half of those articles were labeled as stubs is beyond me. I'll give it a 9/10 for article desire, 6/10 for section accuracy, and an 8/10 overall. Maybe a 9/10 overall since this bot's fun :) Wizardman 21:25, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Heh, thanks for the compliment. It does do a terrible job of updating the lists of articles that need work, partly because I'm lazy and partly because some of the article list pages changed in a way that broke the parser for the (old) version of pymediawiki that I'm using to grab them. Eventually, that will be fixed. -- ForteTuba (talk) 17:43, 23 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Feedback [was Pre-feedback]

I would love to give feedback - but I haven't had any suggestions from SuggestBot yet...I've been on the list since 4 October and you say 'within a week and probably sooner' on the request page. Am I a particularly difficult case or is there a backlog? This is not a complaint, more registering disappointment because it seemed such a brilliant idea... Abbeybufo (talkcontribs) 15:39, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I have now received a list of suggestions - it's a shame it took so long as this has included all sorts of things that are obviously only there because I've been cleaning up disambiguation links in the past week on articles that are nowhere near my own interests!! But I guess that's the way it goes - would it make more sense for me to sign up to the regular suggestions so that I get a better choice of things I'm really into? --Abbeybufo (talkcontribs) 09:28, 3 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah -- I mostly run it manually so when I have time it gets run often and when I don't, not so much. As for the problem with getting random stuff because of the kind of work you do, the right answer is to let people specify their preferences, somehow -- but I haven't (and alas, probably won't for a while) had time to work SuggestBot at all. If I do, though, it's a high-priority item. -- ForteTuba (talk) 17:41, 23 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disambig pages categorised as stubs

Suggestbot categorises the articles Shuna and Soay as stubs, although they are disambig pages, and marked as such. Is it possible to make sure pages with disambiguation tags are not included by SuggestBot? Lurker (said · done) 15:44, 3 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Probably the last time it checked, they had a stub tag on them. It doesn't update its lists of which articles need what kinds of work very often, mostly because that's fairly request-intensive. -- ForteTuba (talk) 17:39, 23 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What I'm concerned about here is how it gave me a bunch of articles about places in California. I don't remember editing any articles about California, and if I did, it probably was to revert vandalism. Perhaps you could add an option for SuggestBot to suggest only articles in a certain category of your choice? --Leedeth 21:31, 3 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'll bet it's the same story as below -- something that linked to a page on California that had a whole bunch of links to other California pages, and the links-based recommender got confused. I'd like to add lots of options to SuggestBot, but I have had trouble getting students interested in working on it (except for the back-end algorithms) and I don't have a lot of free time these days. Letting people have more control over the suggestions is certainly something I'd like to do though. -- ForteTuba (talk) 17:37, 23 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What?

It worked fine on roads and local articles (Hudson Valley) which I am interested in, but it also gave me some random places in China. Smartyllama 17:22, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like the links-based recommender found that something you had edited was linked to an article about a Chinese topic that had a whole bunch of links to other places in China. It can get confused if it finds a richly interlinked set of articles (think how spammers will sometimes set up link farm sites to mess up Google). -- ForteTuba (talk) 17:35, 23 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hrm

Interesting

SuggestBot gave me articles I have no interest in at all, I think maybe it took my anti-vandal work into a greater account then my normal editing patterns. I tend to edit sport and Native American related topics and I received no suggestions with those themes. Still it was interesting to see what it recommended! Final Fantasy Collection - I don't like to admit it, but it makes sense.

Bioterrorism - A bit random, but a fair idea.
Joe Trippi - Not whatsoever.

Trick Pony - Sometimes you just have to hold up your hands and say point-black that you don't love country music.
Dynamic Hepnotics - A little tenuous really.
Reversed field pinch - NOOOOO! MAKE IT STOP!

In conclusion - the music suggestions were about 50% of the way there. Some of them were overly obscure or irrelevant, however. As for the physics-based shit, I have no idea what provided that. No matter what, they were unwelcome and made my brain cry. And the suicide motif - that's just upsetting. I don't even remember editing any article on suicide at all. If I did, it was a one-off clean-up job, and probably not the best foundation for the suggestions. I guess the most important thing for the bot to do is to successfully determine which are browsing-and-finding-an-error type edits, and which are content-building. Very cool nonetheless. Seegoon (talk) 00:08, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mostly very good

SuggestBot gave me an interesting combination of fluid dynamics and reproductive rights articles, which is a good analysis of my editing patterns. I didn't even know there was an article on the no-slip condition, which taught me that it needs to be both improved and linked from several other fluid dynamics articles, for instance. There were only three suggested that made me really wonder what the heck SuggestBot was thinking. Pork? I'm a vegetarian and I don't tend to edit food articles at all. I know nothing about pork. Pick and roll was another odd one; I glanced at it long enough to see it was about something in basketball and I won't be looking at it again. Queen Mary's College is another one I won't be helpful on, but I have at least been known to edit school pages, so it's not all that strange. But overall, SuggestBot did a very good job of pegging my interests. moink (talk) 21:07, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your service. However, where exactly did you get America Ferrera and RIAA Certifcation from? Bad Cheese

Awesome Bot! Almost everything was right on the money; one thing to note. I am the Cheese is a psychological thriller written by one of my favorite authors, Robert Cormier. Oaxaca Cheese, however, is a white, semi-hard cheese of Mexican origin. Looking through the talk page, I see that this sort of thing happens a lot, but I thought I’d just put that in there, even though I was more amused than put off.
Jacob Rodecker 13:58, 3 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Great picks, SuggestBot!

The suggestions SuggestBot gave me are nearly perfect; they spanned most of my interests, but, more importantly, they found articles that needed work and, in many cases, I was unaware that even existed. The only pick that was somewhat suprising was "Chili pepper," but 33 out of 34 isn't bad at all. Keep up the good work! Your list will be very helpful for me, and hopefully it will for other users as well. TFCforever (talk) 04:17, 18 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A Seal is a Seal is a Seal

That was a neat smattering of articles - but only about 50% of actual interest. The bot apparently can't distinguish between Seals - that is, I work and have worked quite a bit on Pinniped articles, but the SuggestBot thought I would also be interested in the Great Seals of Northern Ireland and Canada, the Privy Seal, Seal (mechanical) and also Seam sealant. I'm afraid I'm not really interested in any of those - but I can't imagine it's easy to teach the algorithm to distinguish unrelated homonyms. Anyways, it was fun to poke around! thanks, Eliezg (talk) 04:32, 19 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Feedback

Hi, I am very much a fan of this bot. The articles it gave me were a broad cross-section of the general topics I edit, and I've had quite a bit of fun editing from it.

One thing I thought of that it would be neat if SuggestBot could do though, if you could choose whether you want fewer or more or a certain type of maintenance job to fit your skills. For example, I am quite a fan of merges, and also find myself doing quite a bit of clean-up and wikify, more so than expansion and stub-improving. If its possible to choose for SuggestBot to return more merge suggestions and fewer stubs, I'd love that. I realise that that's quite an arcane request though, so if I am stepping well beyond the boundaries of technical possibility, then ignore me! Great bot anyway, good work! Hey, cool!

I got my list; most of them I could see why they were assigned to me; others, not, but it didn't matter really, I could see that they needed work and I kinda like having an assignment list. I'm here only occasionally these days, and I see that a couple that apparently were flagged as needing work at some poing (maybe when the bot ran) have already been cleaned up, but that's ok, too. What about item-specific feedback

Hello Dan. I am happy that I got my first SuggestBot list, and I must say that the suggestions were all reasonable, and some were indeed not known to me yet but fitting my interests nonetheless. Hence, I will probably go for some of them. As other users have suggested before, I would like to see a feedback option, perhaps best on each individual item rather than a whole category. Another possibility would be to read user boxes or anything similar on the user or user:talk pages, perhaps labeled as something like "SuggestBotYes" and "SuggestBotNo". Besides, I would like to know whether you plan to use it on other language editions and whether you could thus make suggestions on interwiki work, too, as this is one of my foci. --Mietchen (talk) 19:18, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

All I can suggest, if you can program it, is to have it ignore minor edits and reverts. I've reverted a few edits on Egypt articles, but I never edited them since. Other than that, I try to help out on stubs, so all the hockey references work out. The only two I don’t get are Collateral (film) and Seth. I’ve never edited any articles on the Bible or Movies. Other than that, great bot, and I intend to edit some of these articles.

Your bot is awesome! This from a middle-schooler. We're tough with computer programs at my school because they give us laptops and we download so many...

Thanks!

How old is your database?

Overall, I was impressed by your suggestions, a couple made me think "why this article?", even so I was able to do some work on them. My only negative comment is that your database seems to be a bit out of date, November 2007? My merge, wikify and cleanup suggestions had already been sorted months ago. Maybe you can include your database date amongst your suggestions. It would have saved me trying to work out what was wrong with the article, before I realised it had already been fixed. MortimerCat (talk) 22:34, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks...

Dear SuggestBot. Thanks for your suggestions, which were all car-related bar one. I did go on a spree removing unsuitable external links from many, many car articles, but that was nearly 1000 edits ago, and I thought the bot only looked at the last 500 edits... I had hoped to get a range of suggestions on topics that interest me (i.e. not cars). But thanks anyway SuggestBot, and hopefully next time you'll be more useful. :) Somno (talk) 04:26, 14 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, please see this where I tweaked a bit of code you bot left on a friends page. A generated align-element should be changed to a valign-element and the added quotes are proper form for xhtml. Cheers, User:Jack Merridew a.k.a. David 14:22, 2 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is certainly a difficult thing for a bot to do perfectly, and it seems to be doing a rather good job so far. Thanks for the suggestions; I plan to get working on some of these articles right away. On another note, it might be good to include a few "requested articles" listed at certain wikiprojects, etc. if this is possible. Feedback on suggestions

Two things I've noticed with the suggestions sent to me : 1. It would seem to count the number of pages turned into redirects as edits - I've been redirecting a fair few stub school aricles to the school district/locality articles per the proposed guidelines at WP:SCHOOL, which isn't really an edit, but presumably explains the large number of school related articles suggested. 2. At least one of the suggested articles is tagged as requiring attention from an expert - although I don't know if it was tagged as such on the dump SuggestBot used, I'd recommend that it ignore pages tagged as such (if it doesn't already) as the chances of recommending such a page to someone who just happens to be an expert is minimal...unless it now starts taking into account a users userboxes/membership of WikiProjects etc. CultureDrone (talk) 07:19, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The suggestions themselves were good, but your cached versions are really old. One of the articles that was suggested doesn't even exist anymore. Most of the "stubs" were full-blown articles, and a lot of the tags (cleanup, etc) were fixed and removed long ago. But otherwise, great program, and that's for the suggestions! — FatalError 18:07, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A few pointers of improvement

Firstly thanks very much for the requests. Only one slight problem: because I edit the Van Morrison page, various articles were suggested for people whos last name was Morrison, that I don't know anything about. Would it be possible to discount these pages from the suggest bot recommendations? Because someone who has the last name as someone who you're interested in doesn't mean you're going to want to edit their page. Thanks anyway, some interesting relevant pages recommended Kitchen roll (talk) 22:32, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Right now one of the recommenders uses a straight-up bag of words approach, which I realize is really annoying sometimes. I'm hoping a student comes along who wants to really take a look at good algorithms for SB. -- ForteTuba (talk) 13:26, 24 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Random

Some of the items on my list are there simply because I happened to edit some punctuation on the fly while I was visiting a page, or doing some impromptu copy editing on articles that a re not my field.. My only two areas of interest as an editor/contributor are Thailand and French wine. There were lots of links to Thai articles, but for French wines, the subject of my major creations and contributions, were not mentioned at all, indeed, nor was any wine related topic. Anyway, the list has given me something to work on. I think the bot is a good idea, but it still needs some taming :)118.175.130.58 (talk) 08:39, 13 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. I hope a student comes along sometime who really wants to work on this; it turns out that professors spend all their time meeting and none of it coding... -- ForteTuba (talk) 13:31, 24 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Kinda confused about some of the merge suggestions I got: Ehud Olmert, Political action committee, Sex and intelligence; none of which are relevant as far as I can see. Other than that, great work. Grsz11 04:30, 14 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, and expand David Vitter? Grsz11 04:31, 14 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Raiku -- definitely it's a problem for people who do reversions; it tries to filter those out by looking at edit comments but is imperfect. Most of my suggestions were pretty well-related to my edits. I marked suggestions:

Green tickYGreen tickY for suggestions that are easily justified by my edits
Green tickY for suggestions that can make sense, but are less directly related
Red XN for suggestions that are more obscure to me

However, the categorization of suggestions seems off. I also left comments next to the articles that don't exactly meet their subheading. Most curious to me were the red linked pages.

Yeah, it is running off a pretty old list of articles-marked-with-categories so it often gets those wrong. Unfortunately, no time to go fix it up so it's limping along until I find a student who's interested in it. Yeah, one of its recommenders was a straight text-based match. You'll be glad to know, then, that the crash that took out the bot for the summer also killed the text-matching recommender at least for the short term. -- ForteTuba (talk) 13:05, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Still active

Is this bot still active?

Feedback

Suggestbot is pretty good, but I added my name onto '/Regulars' and I've only got one recommendation. Also, I have to address this point: It's suggesting things I never saw any relation to. Several suggestions I got are just related, but I noticed that several 'stub' suggestions, such as Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation, aren't stubs. Could you please improce the 'stub' suggestions, and also find a way of doing regulars (such as programming the bot to move all the users in '/Regulars' into in normal list every run, or writing a new bot that might do that).

Okay, I spent a long time on suggestions. But I have to say, it's good, so keep improving it!--Leolisa1997 (talk) 12:54, 26 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It went down for a long while with a machine crash. It should be coming back up. Stubs (and other work categories) will also have a more recent list; they hadn't been updated for some time. -- ForteTuba (talk) 13:04, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
