Instructions for nominators

[edit]

This page is for those nominations that have already been approved and are waiting to be promoted. If yours has been approved but has not yet been run on the main page, it should either be on this page or will soon be moved here, or already promoted to a Prep area or Queue ahead of an appearance on the main page.

If you wish to create a new nomination, please go to the Template talk:Did you know page; there are instructions there in a section similar to this one on how to nominate an article for DYK.

Frequently asked questions

[edit]

Backlogged?

[edit]

This page is often backlogged. As long as your submission is still on the page, it will stay there until someone promotes it to a preparation area. To alleviate this problem, if the approved page has more than 120 approved hooks, then sets will change twice per day (every 12 hours) instead of once per day (every 24 hours). When the backlog falls below 60 approved nominations set frequency returns to once a day.

Where is my hook?

[edit]

If you can't find the nomination you submitted to the nominations page, and it also isn't on this page, in most cases it means your article has been approved and is either in one of the prep areas, has been promoted from prep to a queue, or is on the main page.

If the nominated hook is in none of those places, then the nomination has probably been rejected. Such a rejection usually only occurs if it was at least a couple of weeks old and had unresolved issues for which any discussion had gone stale. If you think your nomination was unfairly rejected, you can query this on the DYK discussion page, but as a general rule such nominations will only be restored in exceptional circumstances.

Instructions for other editors

[edit]

How to promote an accepted hook

[edit]
  • See Wikipedia:Did you know/Preparation areas for full instructions.
  • In one window, open the DYK nomination subpage of the hook you would like to promote.
  • In another window, open the prep set you intend to add the hook to.
  • In the prep set...
    • Paste the hook into the hook area (be sure to not paste in that that)
    • Paste the credit information ({{DYKmake}} and/or {{DYKnom}}) into the credits area.
    • Add an edit summary, e.g., "Promoted [[Jane Fonda]]", preview, and save
  • Back on DYK nomination page...
    • change {{DYKsubpage to {{subst:DYKsubpage
    • change |passed= to |passed=yes
    • Add an edit summary, e.g., "Promoted original hook to Prep 3", preview, and save

How to remove a hook from the prep areas or queue

[edit]
  • Edit the prep area or queue where the hook is and remove the hook and the credits associated with it.
  • Go to the hook's nomination subpage (there should have been a link to it in the credits section).
    • View the edit history for that page
    • Go back to the last version before the edit where the hook was promoted, and revert to that version to make the nomination active again.
    • Add a new icon on the nomination subpage to cancel the previous tick and leave a comment after it explaining that the hook was removed from the prep area or queue, and why, so that later reviewers are aware of this issue.
  • Add a transclusion of the template back to the nominations page so that reviewers can see it. It goes under the date that it was first created/expanded/listed as a GA. You may need to add back the day header for that date if it had been removed from the nominations page.
  • If you removed the hook from a queue, it is best to either replace it with another hook from one of the prep areas, or to leave a message at WT:DYK asking someone else to do so.

Nominations

[edit]

Special occasion holding area

[edit]
Do not nominate articles in this section—nominate all articles in the nominations section on the regular nominations page, under the date on which the article was created or moved to mainspace, or the expansion began, or it was listed as a Good Article; be sure to indicate in the nomination any request for a specially timed appearance on the main page.
Note: Articles intended to be held for special occasion dates should be nominated within seven days of creation, start of expansion, or promotion to Good Article status. The nomination should be made between at least one week prior to the occasion date, to allow time for reviews and promotions through the prep and queue sets, but not more than six weeks in advance. The proposed occasion must be deemed sufficiently special by reviewers. The timeline limitations, including the six week maximum, may be waived by consensus, if a request is made at WT:DYK, but requests are not always successful. Discussion clarifying the hold criteria can be found here: [1]; discussion setting the six week limit can be found here: [2].
April Fools' Day hooks are exempted from the timeline limit; see Wikipedia:April Fool's Main Page/Did You Know.
Note for promoters: please be sure to add an "invisible" comment after a hook when you've placed it in prep, noting that it's a special occasion hook and including the date it is supposed to run. This should keep the hook from being moved after promotion, as sometimes happens to hooks when a queue needs a slot filled or a prep set needs to be made more balanced by swapping hooks between preps.

Overall: The article was moved to the mainspace on October 28 and nominated the same day for DYK. Length and sourcing are adequate. The article is neutral in tone. No plagiarism was detected, and I note that Earwig highlights only proper nouns and directly attributed quotes which are not violations. The nominated image is freely licensed on the Commons, used in the article, and clear at a low resolution. The hook interesting, mentioned and cited in the article. I cannot access the sources, but will AGF and the image very clearly verifies the hook. The QPQ requirement at the moment only addresses the eligibility on size, not the other criteria yet. As per WP:DYKRR, this QPQ can be accepted when the full review is done. Thanks for the wonderful nomination! Flibirigit (talk) 18:40, 29 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Policy compliance:

Hook eligibility:

  • Cited: No - The NYT source does not support the hook as written because it only covers the US landings but there were British and Canadian beaches on D-Day too. A claim of first/last is a flag Redflag and so needs excellent verification.
  • Interesting: Yes
  • Other problems: No - "Believed" is a weasel word and/or expression of doubt. If this is a definite fact, as it should be, then we should state it as such without such tentative language.

QPQ: No - Not provided yet. done Note current discussions about limiting nominations on credit like this.
Overall: I'm not sure of the formal status of translations but this review template asks Is the article free of material copied from other sources? and it isn't. The article seemed to need some copy-editing and so further work of that kind may soften the issue. Andrew🐉(talk) 10:04, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

ALT1... that Jacques Lewis, a 105 year old French veteran of D-Day, insisted that he participate in a ceremony commemorating the invasion's 80th anniversary? Thriley (talk) 20:55, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Andrew Davidson: Have your concerns been addressed, and does this hook work? If not, what else needs to be done to get this approved? Z1720 (talk) 14:28, 17 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The QPQ has been done and the ALT1 hook seems ok. I raised the issue of translation at WT:DYK but, iirc, most responders didn't seem to be bothered about this.
Looking at the article, I notice that the lead is too short, being just one sentence, and there's just a generic section title of "Biography" which isn't helpful to the reader. So, some copy-editing still seems needed. I'll keep a tab open and make a pass through it myself to see if that helps or turns up any issues. More anon...

  • Regarding "believed", the is what the New York Times states. It is extremely unlikely there are any other living French vets of the American landings on D-Day. I'll change it to "was" if there are no objections. Thriley (talk) 20:49, 19 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

No plagiarism was detected, and I note that Earwig highlights only proper nouns and directly attributed quotes which are not violations. The nominated image is freely licensed on the Commons, used in the article, and clear at a low resolution. The hook interesting and mentioned in the article, but needs better sourcing in the "Death of Wood and later events" section for verification as per WP:DYKCRIT. Specifically, the sentences including "The sole survivor of the accident", and " He was killed in action...at...the Battle of the Somme." all need a citation directly at the end of the sentence. The QPQ requirement at the moment only addressed the eligibility of the article, not the other criteria yet. As per WP:DYKRR, a full review needs to be done to count as a QPQ. Hi Flibirigit, I've duplicated the refs from the end of the paragraph to where you've indicated. I guess the rules on QPQ must have changed recently? I can't see the point in reviewing the other criteria if it fails on one aspect, please use instead: Template:Did you know nominations/All Hell Breaks Loose (Charmed) - Dumelow (talk) 21:26, 29 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Some new hooks:

Also notable that Self-Ish was recently moved by a user to SELF-iSH, so I've created the hooks with this new stylization as redirects aren't allowed. Hopefully these new hooks work for DYK. Koopastar (talk) 00:21, 25 October 2024 (UTC

@Koopastar: Not ALT0a per WP:DYKHOOKBLP; I would have taken ALT2 personally, but a similar hook was declined offhand recently at It's OK I'm OK and I want to hear their reasoning first, as it is more interesting than ALT3. @Koopastar: Looking to approve ALTs 2 and 3. What makes Newnoisemagazine.com and Mycentraljersey.com reliable?--Launchballer 15:22, 30 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Launchballer: New Noise seems to be well-established (11 years) magazine entirely focused on music, with its chief editor having a good amount of experience in writing as noted in the magazine's article. Skimming through articles currently on the site's front page, over a dozen authors are attributed within the past two weeks, showing that they have an editorial team and not just one or two people blogging. The author of the article linked, Tony Shrum, hasn't written for the magazine since 2020 but published hundreds of articles between then and 2016 (the source's date) and more before. Generally, there doesn't seem to be any doubt of reliability within the contents of the site.
My Central Jersey has a staff page of 10 people. On Archive.org, the magazine had 21 writers in January 2018 (the earliest available archive), which has Bob Makin (the author of the article sourced for DYK). According to Makin's page on the site, he's written for over 40 years, won 13 awards for his writing, and interviewed several major artists such as Jon Bon Jovi. With a specialty in music to this extent, I don't see any doubt in the site's (or at least his) reliability. Koopastar (talk) 18:50, 30 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

El Eternauta: tercera parte

Moved to mainspace by Cambalachero (talk). Number of QPQs required: 1. Nominator has 125 past nominations.

Cambalachero (talk) 18:49, 29 August 2024 (UTC).[reply]

General: Article is new enough and long enough
Policy: Article is sourced, neutral, and free of copyright problems

Hook eligibility:

  • Cited: Yes
  • Interesting: Yes
  • Other problems: No - See below.
QPQ: Done.

Overall: Article is new and long enough. No problems with Earwig. A few small issues, however. Some of the material in the article lack citations. For example, the lead contains two statements that are missing citations to confirm (they're not confirmed anywhere in the article body). The entire "Plot" section is unsourced. The proposed hook itself is interesting, but needs to be rewritten. It states that Héctor Germán Oesterheld himself was a character in his own comic, who was retained after he died. In fact, the cited source states that the character of Germán was "Oesterheld's character" ("el personaje de Oesterheld"), but does not explicitly state that it is him. (Native Spanish speaker here, by the way.) The source makes clear that the character is certainly based on him; the hook needs to be reworded accordingly. Another detail that needs to be ironed out is that the hook unequivocally states that Oesterheld is dead. However, all sources I've read state that he is presumed dead. Even if his death is certain, I'm not sure that it could've been declared official at the time this third part of the comic was published in 1981, while the Dirty War was still ongoing. Otherwise, this is a very interesting article about a subject I previously had zero knowledge of! —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 20:40, 31 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    • I have rewritten the lead. Plot sections of articles about works of fiction do not require citations; it is accepted that the book itself is the source. That Oesterheld included himself as a character within the first two stories he wrote does not need to be referenced either, for similar reasons (he's not even the first author who uses that trick, see here). The hook, however, focuses on the real-life stuff about the character. As for his death, it is correct that his death had never been officially confirmed by the military, but his kidnapping was denounced by the family and other organizations shortly after April 1977, and informed by Cadena Informativa on September 1977. It's all in reference 1. A bit off-topic for this article (better suited for HGO's biography, or the second part), but clearly not a situation that Ediciones Record didn't know. They may be in the dark about the details, but not about their star writer being missing and reported kidnapped by the military. Cambalachero (talk) 01:31, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
*Just a moment, please. Looking over the changes now... —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 00:02, 20 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks for everybody's patience. The lead has been improved. No problems with the plot! The ALT still needs to be tweaked. Again, he was, in all likelihood, dead by the time the comic was published. However, he seems never to have been officially declared dead, only presumed dead. It seems like splitting hairs, but it's the kind of thing other editors may potentially bring up once the hook goes live. So best to address it now by modifying the ALT with the qualifier "probably". —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 00:28, 20 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • How about ALT1: ... that El Eternauta: tercera parte kept its creator Héctor Germán Oesterheld as a viewpoint character, even though he was disappeared? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cambalachero (talkcontribs) 17:15, 1 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • CurryTime7-24, does ALT1 satisfy your concerns? Is this ready for you to approve it, or is there more to be done? Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 01:53, 20 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
      • Let me look this over right now. Just a moment... —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 19:28, 23 October 2024 (UTC) ALT1 looks good! Thank you everyone for your patience with me. —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 19:36, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
        • I'm not entirely sure this hook works. Per the article, Héctor Germán Oesterheld isn't the viewpoint character, his self-insert "Germán" is, so the hook isn't quite accurate to the text. On top of that, the comic is science fiction, not an autobiography or memoir, so it doesn't seem to be that unusual that the character would be kept despite the author being vanished. ♠PMC(talk) 19:51, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
          • In-story, it's abundantly clear that "German" is indeed meant to be Oesterheld himself, not just a character with traits of Oesterheld. See here. Characters may still be used in ongoing series after the creator dies, right, but not author-as-character ones. Compare for example with Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in Marvel Comics, they used to add themselves to the stories quite often (for example, when they tried to get to the private reception of the Fantastic Four wedding, and Nick Fury took them to the street). They rarely did so when other authors took the helm of the comics, and almost never (if at all) after their deaths. Similarily, the cameos of Stan Lee were a tradition of all Marvel films regardless of studios, but that tradition stopped in its tracks when Stan Lee died, even if the current technology would allow to make fake cameos if so desired. Not even Deadpool crossed that line. And that, considering that they died of old age, and not in the controversial (to say the least) circumstances in which Oesteheld died. • I'm not taking on the review, but just leaving a comment, as I'm puzzled. Without context, this may not be hook-notable I believe. The question left unaddressed is five seats out of how many. If it is five seats out of 15, this would seen rather non-notable. 2603:7000:2101:AA00:F804:C954:1D4C:5D11 (talk) 03:51, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • I went back and forth on the wording of the sentence, but with the 200 characters cap it is difficult to get all nuances and factoids included. For me "only five" implies that it is less than proportional, but a rewording could be to replace "five seats" with "8%". --Soman (talk) 10:37, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

General eligibility:

Policy: Article is sourced, neutral, and free of copyright problems

Hook eligibility:

Image eligibility:

  • Freely licensed: No - The licensing is incorrect, at issue is not the photograph copyright but the poster itself ({{PD-1923}} in the United States, not sure about Poland)—then you can use {{PD-scan}}
  • Used in article: Yes
  • Clear at 100px: No - all you can see is a number 5
QPQ: Done.

Overall: The article looks mostly fine, but I'm not sure about the hook. Non-proportional electoral systems are typical outside of continental Europe, where proportional representation based systems are more common. First past the post can cause equal amount of distortion. (t · c) buidhe 04:06, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

But the hook states that the reasons for the disproportionality is the curiae system, which is arguably something different from FPTP dynamics. The curia system would be very weird present-day, to explicitly discriminate in favour of the wealthiest. There are some alternate takes on the on the hook, like ALT1 "... that while 55% of the voters in the 1917 Łódź City Council election (poster pictured) were working class, they only got 10 out of 60 seats due to a curiae system implemented by the German authorities?" or ALT2 ... that the curiae-based electoral system used by German occupation authorities in the 1917 Łódź City Council election (poster pictured) disproportionally favoured the non-socialist Jewish parties? Now ALT2 would require a bit of a rewrite in article and need another image though. --Soman (talk) 19:23, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding the clarity of image, I selected precisely because it had symbolism that was readable even at 100px. I don't think we'd expect people to read the fine print, but in 100px the number 5 is clearly visible (5 times) and the largest text is readable ('vote for our list'). The designer of the poster wanted that a reader catch the number 5 clearly even from a distance. --Soman (talk) 19:28, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My point is that many electoral systems intentionally or not result in disproportionate seats for certain parties at the expense of others, thus it cannot really be a surprising fact that this particular electoral system has that result. (t · c) buidhe 19:19, 9 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Again, this is not comparable to the issues from FPTP or STV electoral systems. Here was a case where an electoral system was explicitly designed to give a absolute majority to the wealthiest sections of society, with the explicit and publicly stated goal of ensuring a stable conservative majority. Now at the time the principle 1 citizen 1 vote was not universal by any means, but for present-day readers this is certainly something that would raise eyebrows. --Soman (talk) 21:50, 9 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I know a bit about how pre-German Revolution electoral systems worked in Germany (and as you've written here, applied to occupied territories), but the average reader doesn't. So I think if you are going to take that angle, it needs to be more clear in the hook. (t · c) buidhe 22:53, 9 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Deutscher Kurzwellensender Atlantik

  • Source: "In March 1943, the Political Warfare Executive at Woburn Abbey began broadcasting from two radio stations, Deutscher Kurzwellensender Atlantik and Soldatenseder Calais. These purported to be authentic German transmitters, but in fact had been developed to undermine German morale, and in particular to target U-boat crews ... The objective was to subvert the discipline of enemy submariners by providing continuous first-class music, news, and feature programs every night between 1830 and 0800. Interspersed with German dance bands and singers recorded in the United States, Atlantik spread rumors, issued depressing news bulletins, and generally sought to destroy the seamen's faith in their leadership by contradicting what they had heard from Germany on official channels." from: West, Nigel (2010). • @Dumelow: Another interesting article and perfect for DYK. I prefer ALT0 as interesting and confirmed with citation in the article based on the pull out detailed under the hook. I suggest adding the dates that this station operated in the lead. It was nominated seven days after creation so it is new enough and at 6371 characters it is long enough. The QPQ is done and Earwig does not find evidence of plagiarism. We could use some attention on a few minor things prior to approval.
  1. I suggest adding the dates that this station was operating somewhere in the lead and body.
  2. MOS:AMPM I think it should be: 6 am 8 am, and should the word broadcast be broadcasted? Here is the sentence: "It broadcast between 6pm and 8am daily on a number of shortwave channels".
  3. Maybe other words for the phrase "to this end" as it feels conversational and is an informal idiom. Here is the sentence: "To this end some of the staff were German defectors, including Otto John, Richard Wurmann". Maybe "In order to achieve this goal" or something similar.
  4. Sentence in the article: "To make the station attractive to listeners it broadcast the latest in popular dance music" Same question about the word broadcast
  5. Sentence "it might involve an attempt for vessels to break out to the far east" should Far East be capitalized? and linked to Far East. I cannot access the source so not sure if it is the same thing.

  • ALT1 ... that when the painting Pleasure Garden (pictured) was offered to the Robert McDougall Art Gallery, controversy ensued?
    • Reviewed: Template:Did you know nominations/Mayors in New Zealand
    • Comment: The article was written by Manymanydogs; I merely did a bit of tidying up. A very nice piece of work and the hook would go rather well with the striking image. It's worth talking about the painting's copyright status because this may well come up. The uploader's user name is "TimJonesCAGTPoW" and that would be Tim Jones from the Christchurch Art Gallery. He's been there forever and as you can see in his profile, he has responsibility for the archives of the Robert McDougall Art Gallery. When Tim says that they (the gallery) own the copyright, and he's happy to release it under a free license, he knows exactly what he's doing. Tim works quite a bit with Wikipedians (that's how I've met him before) and he has his head around copyright.

There are two citation needed tags for direct quotes, otherwise sourcing is adequate. There is one tag for subjective/weasel words, otherwise the article is neutral. The hook is interesting, but contains the subjective/weasel word "considerable". What exactly constitutes considerable and how is it verifiable? If the hook simply said controversy, it is verifiable. The nominated photo is stunning. I will AGF that the license is correct on the Commons. The image will greatly enhance the hook and it is used in the article. Onceinawhile (talk) 11:34, 29 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Generalissima: sorry to be difficult but are you sure that is right? It doesn't say founder or co-founder anywhere in the article. This source says: "On July 3, 1898, Emperor Guangxu approved a report to implement the Imperial University of Peking and to draft its charter. Sun Jianai, a senior Chinese official, was appointed “guanli daxuetang shiwu dachen,” or the (education) minister for the imperial university's affairs." The "guanli daxuetang shiwu dachen" is zh:Category:管理大学堂事务大臣. If we are to use co-founder we will need a source stating that. Onceinawhile (talk) 19:10, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for taking a look and doing the review, ProfGray! My understanding from the sources is that the president suggested there be a review, but that the actual review would have been done by the trustees' Buildings and Grounds committee, which is why I used the wording I did.
Agreed with you that the alt hooks are significantly less interesting, so let's focus on ALT0.
Also, good catch that the details are a little hard to make out at 100px. Pomona hasn't ever responded when I've asked them to donate images in the past, but luckily since the work itself is PD we don't need their permission to have some options. One is to crop the existing image a bit to zoom in. And the second is to use a detail from the center of the mural rather than trying to capture the full thing. Lmk which you prefer!

Hi. The proposed hook still needs to be rephrased, so that "sketches for approval" does not need to be in quotes. For example: that Rico Lebrun refused to provide sketches for the Pomono College Board of Trustees to sign off on the Genesis mural they commissioned?
Afaik, this can be approved even though the ALT hooks are weak.@Sdkb:@Z1720: ProfGray (talk) 01:28, 30 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Three words generally isn't considered long enough for there to be any copyright issues. If you're ready to sign off, ProfGray, you need to provide the green check, {{subst:dyktick}}. Sdkbtalk 05:41, 30 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For text as visible as DYK, seems best to err on the side of caution. It's not the number of words per se, see examples at WP:NOCREATIVE with two words. Should be feasible to revise the hook, even keeping the exact word 'sketches.' Indeed, the article itself doesn't use the phrase as is. Presumably there are reasonable alternatives to the word 'approval.' (FWIW, the paraphrasing in the overall article is skillfully done.) ProfGray (talk) 13:42, 30 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
ProfGray, per the essay you just linked, there is no copyrightable creative expression in that factual phrase "sketches for approval" (I arrived at the wording independently after rephrasing the Wikipedia article) — this is not borderline. I do not find the rewrite to flow as well. I'd appreciate it if you could answer my query from above about which image alternative you'd prefer, and then let's please wrap this up. Sdkbtalk 03:59, 31 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sdkb I'm giving my green approval, for lack of a better of a word. It's a fine article and certainly deserves a DYK. Use whichever image you think would be best. All the best, ProfGray (talk) 02:30, 1 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Hook discussion
Thank you very much for taking on this review! I was not sure about the hook myself. Alternatives could be that it's (1) the second solo ice show tour to be ever produced or (2) that the show deals with the ethics of artificial intelligence among others (which is a rather unusual topic for an entertainment event). Do you think, that might work? If yes, I will try to figure out how to phrase and source the hook best. Henni147 (talk) 07:12, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think the current hook would pass scrutiny per WP:DYKSO: The hook should not put emphasis on a commercial release date of the article subject. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 12:13, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Pinging @Henni147:, I guess ALT1 (...that Echos of Life Tour is the second solo ice show tour to be ever produced?) may do the job? ABG (Talk/Report any mistakes here) 01:22, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Narutolovehinata5 and AlphaBetaGamma: Then let's go with ALT1? I just need to find a source that explicitely mentions 'Echoes of Life' as the second solo tour production. It's quite a clear fact because Hanyu's Repray Tour in 2023–24 was the first one, and no other skater has ever produced or performed a solo ice show. But we need to support it by a reliable secondary source. Henni147 (talk) 08:23, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
ALT1 is probably not a good idea as it is an exceptional claim and thus would require exceptional sourcing. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 09:21, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Narutolovehinata5: We just got the news that a full story book will be published before the first show for better access and understanding of the story. Would that be suitable for a hook text? It's quite unusual that a show or concert tour is accompanied by a book. I expect Japanese newspapers to publish some detailed reports within the next few hours. Henni147 (talk) 09:57, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No, because a hook about a book being published would arguably count as advertising and would not fly among the DYK regulars. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 10:00, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Narutolovehinata5: True, didn't think of the promotional aspect. There is one more idea for a hook:

ALT3: "... that the Echoes of Life Tour by two-time Olympic figure skating champion Yuzuru Hanyu is directed by Mikiko who also choreographed the Tokyo handover segment at the 2016 Summer Olympics closing ceremony?"

This hook is supported by the source above and this one by the Japan Times newspaper: "The Tokyo handover segment of the Rio 2016 closing ceremony balanced cool imagery, references galore and meme-worthy moments. That team included musician Sheena Ringo and choreographer Mikiko Mizuno [...]" Henni147 (talk) 11:08, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

According to the tool I'm using, the hook is 203 in prose, which exceeeds the 200 limit. ABG (Talk/Report any mistakes here) 00:06, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@AlphaBetaGamma: Oh okay, so the "that" at the beginning is not included in the count. Does this adjustment work?

ALT3 (shortened): "... that the Echoes of Life Tour by two-time Olympic figure skating champion Yuzuru Hanyu is directed by Mikiko who was also involved in the choreography of the 2016 Summer Olympics closing ceremony?"
Sources: Hanyu Yuzuru to unveil 'Echoes of Life' show on 30th birthday (Olympics.com) and The Olympic opening ceremony that wasn't (The Japan Times).

This hook should have 195 characters now, but better check as well to be sure. Henni147 (talk) 07:25, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Yeah, that's 195 characters. Guess that's a wrap? ABG (Talk/Report any mistakes here) 09:31, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@AlphaBetaGamma and Narutolovehinata5: Thank you very much for checking the hook and taking on this review in general. I hope, all issues have been fixed now. I wonder if the review template at the top needs to be updated to conclude the review? I'm not familiar with the system. Henni147 (talk) 10:11, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ah I see. If we want to go without the series, we could use something like
ALT3: ...that Sequenza XIV for solo cello by Luciano Berio was inspired by the childhood experiences of cellist Rohan de Saram with Kandyan drumming?
But I think your original suggestion also meets the DYK requirements so the decision may be more a matter of taste. Approved. Phlsph7(talk) 07:57, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I think that ALT3 is a bit smallish, - the childhood drumming is just part of the inspiration, the playing of one of the most inspiring cellists of all times should not be left out completely ;) - I learned of his death from a friend who is a cellist, and felt his enthusiasm remembering a live concert of Xenakis. Berio knew why he added to a series that had already been considered complete ("complete" recording in 1995), - it's an outstanding piece in every respect and deserves a little longer hook, imho. We can't use any of the pics, sadly, because de Saram's is not free, and Berio's is way too young for one of his last works. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:06, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
One last alternative if we want to go for the full package: what do you think about the following, a version of ALT0 copy-edited only for better flow:
ALT0a: ... that Sequenza XIV for solo cello by Luciano Berio, completed in 2002 as the last work in a series begun in 1958, was inspired by Rohan de Saram's artistry, including traditional Kandyan drumming?

      • @Soman and Gerda Arendt: a couple of things. Firstly, on English terminology: notwithstanding the direct translation of "Feldkapelle", a "chapel" in English is usually a room in a larger building. I would instead call this a "shrine" or similar.
Secondly, on WP:DYKINT: perhaps we could trim the bits about his various jobs and focus on the chapel? To me, it is interesting that it is now a hiking destination, or that a ceremony has been held on the same feast day since 1984, the day of its consecration. ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 08:58, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
learning English: this is the first time I hear that chapel has a different meaning from Kapelle. We could do nothing, relying on "usually". We could use the original Feldkapelle, which would clarify better that it is in nature (which the image shows - open to the front) but not clearly. "Shrine" tells me that there are some relics, such as those of Hildegard of Bingen in the village church of Eibingen (not the abbey). Wrong? - As for shortening: yes we could stop right after Gotteslob which speaks of responsibility for the common German-language hymnal (for German-language countries that is), far beyond the Würzburg diocese, and far far beyond some little open space in the fields. I only picked it because of the image, and because he loved Mary as well as church music. Yes, there was one piece to Mary sung in the Requiem, but the heavy weight was on Mozart's Requiem. - Just today I remember a 10-years-old hook about Mela Tenenbaum, and am happy that it says something about geography in her life and dedication of music to her, and not just that she played a piece with an unusual instrumentation, or just that she played on Queen Elizabeth 2. Happy also to have mentioned Ukraine in 2014. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:21, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, perhaps using the original Feldkapelle would be best. The image is also rather low-quality and probably shouldn't be used. With that in mind, I'm rather struck by his work on confirmations—including the 500 in Tanzania. If he considered that work his prime duty, he'd probably prefer a hook on it—and you get something about geography in his life too. What do you think? ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 12:11, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
ALT1: ... that Helmut Bauer, responsible for church music in Würzburg and president of the commission for the Gotteslob hymnal, confirmed around 150,000 young people, including 500 in Tanzania? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:19, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok for ALT1. I'm still also ok with the original hook, a kapelle is a chapel and a feldkapelle is a field chapel. See for example "feldkapelle, or field chapel, a Northern European tradition of building small chapels in rural and agrarian landscapes." ([10]) --Soman (talk) 09:55, 19 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There is a memorial to the Prince Imperial on the East wall of the church erected by Monsignor Goddard his friend and tutor on the spot where the Prince’s coffin rested from 1879-89." Hi @Hawkeye7: Thank you for catching that, yes I've added another source. The "list description" at the bottom of that source is the original property listing made in the 1970s by Historic England, often done very quickly with little evidence of verifiability. ALT0 is fine and checks out to sources cited, so happy to approve that one. A QPQ has been carried out, article was pulled and re-reviewed but I think the amount of effort put into the original review justifies it counting - Dumelow (talk) 07:41, 29 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
      • @Dumelow: Thank you for the review. Based on your comments I agree the second hook isn't very appropriate. I guess I was too focused on making an interesting hook, and ended up making a sensationalistic one instead. Given Doherty's passing, it would be in bad taste. Regarding the first hook, I was just wondering if we can make a few small changes, if you think it'd be better. What if we also linked Prue's article and included the character's last name in the hook? PanagiotisZois (talk) 13:09, 29 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    • Approve ALT0. Interesting article. New enough (submitted on day of creation); long enough (4176 characters). Has multiple sources in English, appears BLP-compliant. (Small nit is that "Anonymous" is non-standard for references; if you can't find a byline, just leave it out, especially if you're citing a newspaper article. The one exception I might make is if someone went out of their way to use "Anonymous" as their byline.) Reads neutral; the large number of direct quotes makes it read a bit like a magazine article rather than an encyclopedia entry, but this isn't a show-stopper either, as the quotes appear to appropriately cite their sources. Spot check suggests copyright violation is not a problem. The single boldlinked article looks presentable. QPQ is done. There is no photo. This leaves the hooks. Strongly prefer and approve ALT0 which is interesting and cites a reliable source. Striking ALT1 on the basis that it's not that interesting (lots of people do things like that for charity) and it assumes readers know who Mark DeCarlo is. Other general comments: Is it worth explaining what some of those Japanese terms in the article mean? Not everyone wants to leave the article while reading it to click on the wikilinks. Happy to review additional ALT hooks if needed. Cielquiparle (talk) 12:59, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

      • Article is new enough, having been moved from draftspace on October 12.
      • Three times the required length, certainly long enough.
      • Very well sourced, copyvio doesn't show anything substantial, no POV or BLP issues to be found.
      • Article is presentable. If we want to quibble on the details, the second picture is staggered from the infobox on V10, but that's not the kind of presentability issue that really matters at DYK.
      • Thankfully, the book is in open access! The first hook is fully cited there, and the second one is mostly cited there, although it does not mention that the will was drafted prior to him becoming Attorney General. To be fair, as Hopkins died two years prior, the inference is pretty obvious.
      • Both hooks are short enough.
      • The first hook is not necessarily amazing, as it already presumes knowledge of what a state's attorney in a city is (I didn't realize it was a distinct position from "attorney general" at first), and it isn't that surprising that someone drafting a constitution would get one of the offices it established. ALT1 is more interesting in my opinion, although it might depend on how recognizable Johns Hopkins is.
      • All images used in the article are public domain, and the hook image is present in the article and clear at a diminished size, so it is a good image.
      • QPQ has been done ahead of time.
      • No other issues, as far as I can see.

    • Other problems: No - AGF on the hook citations due to the fact that I don't speak Polish. ALT2 is ineligible due to the fact that it doesn't appear in the article (and also is somewhat contradicted by the map showing its location in the article). Wolverine XI (talk to me) 09:06, 20 October 2024 (UTC).[reply]

    • @Wolverine XI and BhagyaMani: A common ancestor of just the fishing cat or of the Fishing cat and the hybridized Leopard cat, or of the fishing and both leopard cat species? Also, the conflicting divergence estimates shouldn't be an "and" connector, they should be an "or", as they are in conflict with each other.--Kevmin § 21:15, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • The fisher is not part of this scenario AT ALL, but is not even a cat. The fishing cat and the leopard cat are members of the same genus, hence had a common ancestor. Estimation of genetic divergence time from this last common ancestor was performed by two different author teams and derived from two different sets of genetic material + analysis. The 1st estimate for this divergence time of 4.31–1.74 million years ago (mya) was based on mitochondrial gene segments, and the 2nd of 4.25–0.02 mya on SNP genotyping. – BhagyaMani (talk) 01:10, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The snark is NOT appropriate, we're both aware the taxa in question here. Are you saying that the estimates are for the full genus then its also including the flat face cat and I get that two divergence dates are present, but it doesn't change that the wording "between 4.31 to 1.74 million years ago and 4.25 to 0.02 million years ago" is fallacious. The two dating results are mildly contradictory so saying "and" between them is not correct unless we are explicit about the genes involved, which the article does not do at this point. The clarification of mitochondrial and SNP genotyping is needed. I also feel that alt1 will run afowl of being to specialized for a broad audience as its currently worded.
There are also close paraphrase issues in the distribution and Behavior sections that should be dealt with. Full sections of sentences are pulled directly from the source material with no attempt at reqording.--Kevmin § 16:47, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Kevmin: @Wolverine XI: What would you both think about this hook:ALT3 "... that the fishing cat is threatened by the destruction of wetlands in Southeast Asia?"
.. in Southeast Asiais erroneous, because destruction -- and conversion -- of wetlands is a threat EVERYWHERE in fishing cat range. – BhagyaMani (talk) 17:48, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And how about amending ALT1 to ALT4 "... that the fishing cat diverged from the genus Prionailurus at least 20,000 years ago?" ? – BhagyaMani (talk) 14:43, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The close paraphrasing is dealt with, and ALT3 ALT4 hooks are sourced and more hooky for general audiences. GA is new enough and article is very well cited to neutral sourcing. For hook Alt4 @BhagyaMani: we could go with "... that the fishing cat diverged from its sister species at least 20,000 years ago?"--Kevmin § 16:47, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think using Prionailurus is more appropriate, as the words 'sister species' are not in the text. And I once learned that words in DYK phrasing needs to be in text. I also suggest to discard ALT1 with the details and source, the more so as this source is not the same as referenced in text. – BhagyaMani (talk) 17:42, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thats an easy fix, add the words "sister species" into the molecular dating section of the article, the term is uncontroversial. I agree that ALT1 should be discarded.--Kevmin §
Since Wolverine XI proposed ALT1, shouldn't we wait with discarding this for them to comment and agree ? Though I proposed this to them initially, before I added ALT2. – BhagyaMani (talk) 19:42, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Kevmin: Not trying to bikeshed here, but wasn't the Alt2 part about "strongly associated with wetlands" found to be a component of the original concern over copyvio? The phrase "Fishing cats are strongly associated with wetlands" is present verbatim in the IUCN report. I was also thinking that "and preys foremost on fish" reads a little weird and might be replaced with something like "and has a diet which is about 75% fish" (substantiated by paragraph 2 of 'Behaviour and ecology') or "preys mostly on fish". Overall: Pofka put in a lot of work on this article translating Lithuanian-language sources. The article is sufficiently long and fact-based. At their request, I copyedited the article. This effort is worthy for a DYK. I'd also offer to copyedit the hook: (ALT1) "that the Kaunas Carillon stopped playing music for sixteen years (except for one day in 1941) due to the Soviet and German occupations of Lithuania?" I think this is a bit more naturally worded and not too detailed. Thrakkx (talk) 03:48, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Thrakkx: Thanks for copyediting the article and for reviewing this DYK nomination. I agree that your suggested ALT1 version is better and is easier to read, thus this updated version should be preferred when adding a DYK hook about the Kaunas Carillon to the main page of Wikipedia. -- Pofka (talk) 18:06, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

All the better for views if you ask me, but technically that hook would be about dog meat and thus it would fail WP:DYKHOOKSTYLE, so with regret I've struck it. ALT0 is available for review; might have a rummage for hooks myself. (Also, that image of 'a female dog nursing' is adorable.)--Launchballer 19:28, 21 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm doing a tick to make clear that this comment is not an objection, but just excerpts from the two sources verifying the hook fact. The earlier article says, "The researchers determined that dogs were probably domesticated from now-extinct wolves between 11,000 and 16,000 years ago — before humans began farming around 10,000 years ago."[19] and the more recent article pushes this timeline back further,[20] "Dogs were the first domesticated species and the only animal known to enter into a domestic relationship with people during the Pleistocene [...] dogs were domesticated in Siberia by 23,000 years ago, possibly while both people and wolves were isolated during the harsh climate of the Last Glacial Maximum. Dogs then accompanied the first people into the Americas and traveled with them as humans rapidly dispersed into the continent beginning 15,000 years ago [...] The earliest generally accepted dog dates to 15 ka (from the site of Bonn-Oberkassel, discussed below). However, claims for the existence of domestic dogs as early as 40 ka (22–28) have been made on the basis of morphological (22, 24–27), isotopic (22, 29), genetic (22, 28, 30), and contextual assessments (24, 31) of ancient canid remains. Yet, none of these potential domestication markers is fail-safe, owing to the fact that wolves and early domesticated dogs can be difficult to distinguish from each other." I can't help but think a hook along the lines of: "... that the myth of Shunten, the legendary first king of Chūzan, was used to justify the 1872 annexation of Okinawa?" would be more interesting, if just because it shows how late this myth still had currency (I also suspect front page readers would be more familiar with Okinawa than Ryukyu). This source verifies that Oun Yao-ling is also known as Günter Wu. The book notes: "To assure the white population that South Africa was held in high regard by the sporting world, it was important to have a large contingent of international competitors at the Bloemfontein Games. To this end, nearly 100 invitations went out to foreign athletes; white athletes. There were, however, some embarrassing slip-ups. Inadvertently, the organisers invited German weightlifter Günter Wu, who was Chinese, and New Zealand runner Kevin Ross, who was Maori. Both invitations were promptly withdrawn when this unforgivable mistake was discovered. In the months running up to the South Africa Games, Brutus lobbied athletes, asking them not to participate."

@JuniperChill: ah, I see. Is that template not a barrier to passing? I wouldn’t have thought it’s okay for an article to appear on the main page while it has some sort of call to action template. Also, is your username referencing the Juniper Inn from Hotel Hell? — MaxnaCarta  ( 💬 • 📝 ) 13:25, 26 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MaxnaCarta: The reason why a history merge is being presented is because this page was (possibly) cut and pasted from Draft:Talerddig rail accident. And that will be accepted/declined well before it hits the main page anyway. And with regards where my username came from, I got it from my favourite plant. I also wanted to add a little chill to my username. I never watched Hotel Hell or even heard of it, but heard Gordon Ramsay. JuniperChill (talk) 16:51, 26 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@JuniperChill: Consider the antepenultimate version of the draft, i.e. that before it was blanked and redirected, and also consider the version of the article as it stood at the same moment. There are significant differences; it is clear to me that there was no cut-and-paste. They were started independently, both in mainspace, although the one that is presently in draftspace was moved there by Discospinster (talk · contribs). I don't think that a histmerge would be useful. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 17:35, 26 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Redrose64 is correct. There was no cut and paste involved, therefore there is no need for a history merge. I've removed the template. Mjroots (talk) 09:43, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's good to hear. Now we'll have to wait for the original reviewer to approve this. I would also note (as seen from my comment at the top) that I also created my own version of this crash, but since I realised one was already made, I redirected that. • Source: Boucher, Brian (September 4, 2024). "A Court Approves Valparaiso University’s Controversial Plan to Sell Paintings From Brauer Museum Collection". Artnet. News. Quote: "The Brauer Museum of Art at Indiana's Valparaiso University has been at the center of controversy for a year and a half, as the school has moved to sell three valuable artworks from the museum’s collection to fund improvements to freshman dormitories. The paintings, by Frederic Edwin Church, Childe Hassam, and Georgia O'Keeffe, have been valued in the area of $20 million. Now, the Porter County Superior Court has approved of the university's plan, according to a court order dated August 29...The plan to sell the works was met with an outcry from many in the university community, a lawsuit filed by namesake founding director Richard Brauer, and condemnation of the sale in a joint statement issued by the leadership of the Association of Art Museum Directors, the American Alliance of Museums, the Association of Academic Museums and Galleries, and the Association of Art Museum Curators. "This remains a fundamental ethical principle of the museum field, one which all institutions are obligated to respect: in no event shall funds from deaccessioned works be used for anything other than support for a museum's collections, either through acquisitions or the direct care of works of art".
    • Another source: Cui, Liya (September 4, 2024). "Indiana Court Allows Valparaiso University to Sell O'Keeffe Painting". Reuters. Quote: "An Indiana judge has ruled that Valparaiso University can sell a Georgia O'Keeffe and two other paintings...The private Lutheran university in Indiana last February announced its intention to sell the most valuable paintings in its Brauer Museum of Art collection, estimated to be worth $20 million in total, to fund a dormitory renovation...When a museum sells its artwork to raise funds, the money is typically used to acquire, store or preserve other works, according to guidelines established by the Association of Art Museum Directors."
    • Older source that was published before the court approval: "Richardson, Kalia (March 10, 2023). "Its Georgia O'Keeffe Is Worth Millions. And Its Dorms Need Updating". The New York Times. Quote: "Schools typically court controversy when they announce they will sell artworks to raise funds, an act known as deaccessioning. Several sales have resulted in sanctions from art associations....Valparaiso's desire to pay for work on the dorms with proceeds from the paintings has received pushback...Valparaiso's announcement alarmed art associations because of a long-held principle among museums: Revenue from deaccessioned pieces should be used to acquire new works, not for operating costs...Four art associations issued a joint statement condemning Valparaiso and the idea that the works in the Brauer's collection were "disposable financial assets." One of the groups, the Association of Art Museum Directors, also told the museum’s director, Jonathan Canning, that if the university proceeded with the sale, it would consider censuring and sanctioning the museum."

Tag added! I am not quite happy with the amendment, Dumelow, because it does not flow or catch attention nearly as well as "royal divorce"; and while divorce and annulment are different things in modern law, in the Middle Ages the annulment was the divorce, and indeed historians of the Middle Ages use the terms interchangeably, "divorce" even more commonly. The article notes:

      From a translation:

Can you be drunk during a urine test? Believe it or not, at this World Cup, as long as the performance is acceptable—especially for male athletes—if they meet the qualification standards for next year’s Barcelona Olympics, they are guaranteed to be "called in" for drug testing, which involves urine tests.

On the day of the competition, Wu Tsai-fu, a Level 4 athlete from the Chinese team, was notified to take a urine test even before finishing his lifts. Whether it was nerves or excessive sweating, he found himself unable to produce any urine.

In the end, with no other options, he had to resort to drinking beer. Not typically a drinker, Wu suffered significantly, and after downing six large glasses, he finally managed to urinate. However, he ended up drunk and had to rely on teammates to help him back to the athletes' village.

    • Hi CitrusHemlock, review follows: article moved to mainspace on 30 October and far exceeds minimum length; it is well written and cited inline throughout to reliable (largely offline) sources; I didn't pick up on any issues with overly close paraphrasing; image is obviously magnificent and PD by virtue of age; no QPQ is required as nominator has only one prior DYK credit; ALT01 is stated in the article and checks out to source cited. I have struck ALT1 as the article states there is doubt that Regulus himself appears in the piece and ALT2 as the article only says that "Gilbert claims" the driving in of the paint was done. Happy to consider alternative hooks if you want to suggest any? - Dumelow (talk) 14:29, 30 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Dumelow: Thanks for reviewing the nom so quickly! I was a bit sloppy with the phrasing of the ALTs, the first could probably be rephraised to "...that the painting Regulus is based on a Roman general who was blinded by the sun?" and the second "...that J. M. W. Turner reportedly repainted Regulus by "driving" white paint into the center of the canvas?" Regardless, the stabbing is the most compelling hook in my opinion, but any of them would work well.

Overall: You are burying the lede. Why is Burrito Express called the "king of the flying burrito"? Because they used to run a mail order business that shipped frozen burritos across the U.S. That's your best and most interesting hook. But it's not here. Everything else checks out. Pass ALT0 as first choice, followed by ALT2. I do not support ALT3 as it breaches the bright line of contentiousness, and I don't support ALT1 because "threatened with closure" is too ambiguous and makes it seem like there's a negative component to it when it is just the nature of the business environment during COVID, not the quality of their food. Viriditas (talk) 04:23, 1 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    • Thank you for reviewing. I'd appreciate it if you could be more specific as to what the shortcomings are so that I may remedy them. Are you asking me to contextualize ALT0 by mentioning the mail order business? I had thought about it, but was worried it would make the hook too long. If you feel this is necessary, however, please let me know and I will provide a modified hook. —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 04:32, 1 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • I'm sorry—I totally misread your review. You're right, it slipped my mind to make a hook based on their mail order business. Please give me until tomorrow morning (PDT) and I'll have a new hook ready for you! Thanks again. —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 04:43, 1 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
