Thought it was worth setting up a page and seeing if some editors who are active for some Latin American countries might be interested in some sort of ambitious challenge to aim for long term with 10,000 article improvements or creations for South America, Central America and the Caribbean. The idea is based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge for the UK and The 10,000 Challenge (Africa), but with people adding entries for different countries with flags much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic), so we can see which countries are being worked on.

The idea is not to document every minor edit or improvement, but to create a momentum by displaying the diversity of content being improved or created for each country and make it more visible regionally, and in turn attempt to inspire and motivate people to work on countries they might not normally work on or reinforce existing national WikiProject efforts to improve content. With that in place, eventually there might be some contests in the format of Wales's Awaken the Dragon, The Africa Destubathon or regional/national contests held for Latin American countries with prizes, contests for Asian women etc to help fuel the drive but we'll see.

Some countries like Brazil, Mexico or Argentina might be more interested in smaller 1000 Challenges like Nordic and Turkey, not sure, but it's possible we could work something out where people work on smaller regional challenges and feed them into a list for the entire continent.

Goals

Improve the quality of existing articles related to Latin America, and to encourage more editors to improve general article quality and sourcing. Try to ensure that no article created or existing is unsourced, and try to ensure that every article has no unsourced statements and that Wikipedia:Citations are neatly drawn up and consistently formatted. The most important goal of the challenge is to try to see an overall improvement in quality for Latin American countries, and more consistency in articles in any category.
To encourage the creation of missing content and build a highly comprehensive coverage of every Latin American country on English Wikipedia. In doing so, to develop a detailed missing article directory for Latin American countries by area and topic to promote long term growth and view overall scope.
To make existing settlement articles for Latin American consistently of minimum quality, with some geographical and population information and create new articles in the same style. Eventually aim to have a satisfactory article for every settlement in Latin America.
Create a general district template for every district in Latin America like Template:Amasya District (for Turkey) as a long term development tool and encourage more articles on buildings in localities.
Help cleanup and destub existing articles, particularly on Brazil and Argentina which might get a lot of traffic or IP spamming/poor translations. Devise a way of maintaining article quality and getting more editors to cover differ areas and more articles going on watchlist to protect content long term and guide new editors to become quality editors themselves.
To generate a strong momentum for Latin America and stage contests/editathons which fuel growth and attract people to develop those countries which might not otherwise get much attention. In the long term, try to build bridges with institutions within Asia and get them to see the potential of Wikipedia for national development. Get libraries, universities and cultural institutions involved in hosting editathons and forming partnerships with Wikipedia in contests, which promote growth on both English, Spanish, Portuguese and other Latin American language Wikipedias.

If we can get together some editors who think they might be interested in working on something like this long term sign up here. If I can see some sort of initial indication that there is the support for this I'll start a full blown challenge later in the month.

In addition to focusing on "missing articles", please consider expanding existing ones: there are many stub articles, which are just a short and basic definition, for instance like this. It is good to have them, but it may be better to have bigger articles, with more information. Try to seek those, and expand them. Here are the main categories of stubs for each county (remember that they have subcategories), and a proposed random article from them. This random article will be renewed in a few days.

State whether it's a new article/stub/a destubbing, an article cleanup/expansion/ref improvement, Good/Featured Article etc, and credit yourself after it. Add entries to the list below with a # under the relevant country (for articles spanning multiple countries; order alphabetically), so the numbers will count and show how many articles per country are added (and which countries are lacking content still). We hope that people can focus a lot on improving existing article quality, destubbing and cleanup; not just new articles. Please try to ensure that all entries are sourced with formatted citations and that there are no unsourced claims. Try to avoid creating short stubs for this, though lengthy stubs are welcome. Keep entries in alphabetical order and embolden entries which are GA/FA noms or listings to mark work of sealed quality.
