Super Cassettes Industries Private Limited, doing business as T-Series,[note 1][1][2] is an Indian music record label and film production company founded by Gulshan Kumar in 1983.[6] It is primarily known for Bollywood music soundtracks[6] and Indi-pop music.[7] As of 2017, T-Series is one of the largest Indian music record labels, along with Zee Music and Sony Music India.[8]

Kumar, initially a fruit juice seller in Delhi, founded T-Series as a small company selling pirated Bollywood songs, before the company eventually began producing its own Bollywood music. Their breakthrough came with the soundtrack for the 1988 Bollywood blockbuster Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, composed by Anand-Milind, written by Majrooh Sultanpuri, and starring Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla, which became one of the best-selling Indian music albums of the 1980s. T-Series was founded on July 11, 1983,[1] by Gulshan Kumar,[12] at the time an obscure fruit juice seller in the Daryaganj neighbourhood of Delhi.[13] It was initially a small company selling pirated Bollywood songs, prior to releasing original music.[14] T-Series' first original film soundtrack release was for Lallu Ram in 1984, with music scored by Ravindra Jain.[citation needed]

The company's breakthrough came when it released the soundtrack for the 1988 Bollywood blockbuster Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (also known as QSQT),[15] directed by Mansoor Khan and starring Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla. The Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak soundtrack, composed by Anand-Milind and written by Majrooh Sultanpuri, became the best-selling Indian soundtrack album of 1988 and one of the best-selling Indian soundtrack albums of the 1980s,[16] with more than 80 lakh (8 million) units sold.[17] The biggest hit song from the album was "Papa Kehte Hain", sung by Udit Narayan and picturised on Aamir Khan.[18][19] T-Series founder Gulshan Kumar soon played a key role in Bollywood's cassette boom of the late 1980s with his affordable T-Series albums.[20]

T-Series later became a leading music label with the release of Aashiqui (1990),[14] a film soundtrack album composed by duo Nadeem–Shravan, which sold 2 crore (20 million) units in India,[21] and is the best-selling Bollywood soundtrack album of all time.[9] T-Series was largely responsible for sparking a boom for the Indian music industry boom in music]] in the early 1990s.[22] Many of the best-selling Bollywood music albums of the 1990s, particularly those composed by Nadeem–Shravan, were released under the T-Series label.[9] Besides music production, the company also began venturing into film production.[23] The annual earnings of T-Series grew from ₹20 crore ($16 million) in 1985 to ₹200 crore ($88 million) in 1991,[24][25] and by 1997 had reached ₹500 crore[26] ($140 million).[27]

YouTube presence

T-Series joined YouTube on 13 March 2006, but only started uploading videos in late 2010. Under this channel, T-Series primarily shows music videos and film trailers. By July 2013, it had crossed 100 crore (1 billion) views, becoming the second Indian YouTube channel to cross the milestone after Rajshri Productions.[39] In February 2017, T-Series surpassed PewDiePie to become the world's most-viewed YouTube channel,[40][41][42][43]. As of 19 December 2018 it has 5,600 crore (56 billion) views.[10]

The YouTube channel has reached 7.5 crore (75 million) subscribers, making it the second most-subscribed YouTube channel after PewDiePie. Currently, it is the most subscribed Asian and non-English-language YouTube channel. Reaching 5 crore (50 million) subscribers, the channel received a Custom Play Button on September 10, 2018.[44] It is also the second channel ever to hit 7 crore (70 million) subscribers.[10] Beyond this, the channel earns an average of nearly 150,000 subscribers a day. Socialblade, a website which tracks YouTube channel statistics, predicted that T-Series would surpass PewDiePie's subscriber count by October 2018.[45][46]Despite Socialblade's predictions, PewDiePie's subscriber count is still currently ahead of T-Series's.

The T-Series channel also owns a multi-channel network, with 29 channels,[3] which include YouTube channels such as T-Series Tamil, T-Series Telugu,[47] and Bollywood Classics.[48] On top of this, six of their channels are among the top 100 most-subscribed channels in India, including T-Series, Bhakti Sagar, Apna Punjab, T-Series Regional, Lahari Music, and T-Series Telugu.[49] T-Series' 29 channels have accumulated a total of more than 10 crore (100 million) YouTube subscribers as of November 2018,[3] and 6,150 crore 61.5 billion views as of August 2018.[47] During January–July 2018, T-Series earned an income of ₹720 crore (equivalent to ₹963 crore or US$110 million in 2023) from YouTube.[47] The most popular T-Series artist on YouTube is Guru Randhawa, whose 2017 song "Lahore" has crossed 70 crore (700 million) views on YouTube.[50]

What has caused T-Series' growth in viewership and subscriptions has been attributed to India's emerging online population. Due to India's online population growing to 50 crore (500 million) internet users, this represents just over a third of the country's overall population and is continuing to grow at a fast pace.[51] A major breakthrough in India's internet growth came in September 2016 with India's first 4G network, Reliance Jio, offering data at very low costs.[12] India has since emerged as the world's second-largest online population (behind China, where YouTube is blocked), with YouTube alone having over 22.5 crore (225 million) monthly Indian users. India's high demand for YouTube content has contributed significantly to the rapid growth of T-Series, as well as due to a lack of local content creators.[52]

The growth of T-Series is also attributed to its growing audience outside of India.[12] About 40% of the channel's traffic comes from outside of India,[3] including 12% from the United States.[12] The majority of the channel's overseas viewers belong to the global South Asian diaspora. More recently, the channel's overseas viewership has increased further, as a result of attention and controversy drawn to the channel by foreign YouTubers such as PewDiePie and MrBeast.[3]

In November 2007, T-Series filed a lawsuit against YouTube for infringing on the copyright of its music by allowing people to upload videos of its music onto YouTube, which could be accessed for free and obtained an interim order against YouTube from the Delhi High Court, which restrained YouTube from infringing on its copyright.[53][54] T-Series and YouTube settled out of court in January 2011.[54]
