2017 has been designated as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development by the United Nations General Assembly.[1]

  • August 5 – The UN Security Council unanimously approves fresh sanctions on North Korea, further restricting trade and investment.[14]
  • August 8 – After reports that North Korea has produced a nuclear warhead small enough to fit inside its missiles, President Trump warns that the country "will be met with fire and fury" if it threatens the US.[15]
