:::::You lack the competence to even understand the history of this situation. To even question that I'm working for the readers when I pick up (on average) six issues '''per day''' on the main page, is a joke. Your personal issues with me, exemplified by cherry-picking a DYK hook and destroying it through your own abject incompetence is enough to demonstrate that you need to revisit your own competencies. I have voluntarily removed myself from this forum, successfully so as we are picking up and resolving issues at a rate unseen before with a handful of helpful '''and competent''' admins. Vanamonde, you're not worthy to be an admin, and it's sad to say that because I've been around and seen a few. You fail. '''Killing of Jamal Khashoggi'''

Revision as of 22:08, 21 October 2018

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 12:18 on 21 May 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems, because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed, determined not to be an error, or the item has rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

TFA today

The name of the country is essential, but the article and the TFA both say "Welsh village," unlinked. I've fixed the lede in the article itself. PS: This page was hard to find. -Inowen (nlfte) 04:35, 21 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

On the issue of whether "Welsh" is acceptable instead of "Wales", we use the adjective forms of countries quite a lot at WP:FAC and WP:TFA. About the link: if you look back a few days ago at October 16, another editor removed a link to Wales, and I reverted. Some people think: we don't link US or England, so it's disrespectful to link Wales, as if Wales were some strange country people haven't heard of. Other people think that not linking it is disrespectful. When I get up in the morning, I'll look at how people have responded to your edits to the article. - Dank (push to talk) 05:00, 21 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
My thinking is that the country doesn't need to be linked when the city is clearly linked nearby. The reader can easily click the one to get to the other, and it avoids the sea of blue. Modulus12 (talk) 05:54, 21 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Per Dank: Welsh village is clear enough, and we don't link countries, per WP:OVERLINK. - SchroCat (talk) 06:02, 21 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ack! To clarify, I meant "some strange country people haven't heard of" in the hypothetical voice of someone who's feeling offended, not in my voice. I don't call countries strange. Anyway ... it looks like the proposed change to the article didn't get any support at the article. - Dank (push to talk) 21:27, 21 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

People's Vote

Technically it's not a protest against Brexit, but more about a referendum on the final Brexit deal. And it should be "more than half a million" not "over". Thanks. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 08:47, 21 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I've made the change to "more than", as that seems non-controversial. I'd like to see more discussion about the other suggestion before changing anything. Vanamonde (talk) 20:54, 21 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The BBC says: "The People's Vote campaign said stewards on the route estimated 700,000 were taking part." Also e.g. The Guardian: "demonstrated by Saturday’s 700,000-strong march in London", etc. I know organisers may be biased in their count, and I know the blurb is not "wrong" as such, but that missing 200,000 equates to a 35% error? Martinevans123 (talk) 21:27, 21 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Countries in blurbs

We sometimes name countries after naming a more specific location within them, and sometimes don't. It would be helpful, I think, to have some means of standardizing this, particularly when the location involved is a city or other sub-regional division. My personal preference would be for using "city, state/province" for geographically large countries, and "city, country" for smaller ones; but I'd like to hear more opinions. Vanamonde (talk) 21:19, 21 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The wrong place for this discussion. And even worse, a continued abuse of WP:ACCESS. But nothing less than I expect here. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:45, 21 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, what? I'm not asking for a policy change; I'm asking here because the last few blurbs, some of which are still on the main page, have brought this up. If you have an issue with a specific blurb, please explain what it is. Vanamonde (talk) 21:52, 21 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Killing of Jamal Khashoggi

Killing of Jamal Khashoggi is pipe-linked from the Main page. The page was moved to Murder of Jamal Khashoggi. Should pages linked from the Main page be move-protected? Or such moves at least monitored and adjusted to them. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:42, 21 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Forget it, it seems moved back. The general questions should be considered, though. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:43, 21 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I think that's a good question, Gerda. Martinevans123 (talk) 21:49, 21 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • The comma after Maranhão state can be removed. Prevented from draining due to the impermeable rock reads better as prevented from draining by the impermeable rock. "Listed as endangered" is also piped to a redirect. And using acres next to kilometers looks strange to me, but maybe that's just how Brazil works. Modulus12 (talk) 04:10, 20 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • @Modulus12: I've made your tweaks, but left acres and km as I don't know whether that's normal for Brazil or not. Thryduulf (talk) 23:14, 20 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
      • Nope, that's my fault. They should be consistent with SI first. GMGtalk 18:00, 21 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
