Star+ (stylized as ST★R+) is a standalone streaming service service from The Walt Disney Company that launched in Latin America on August 31, 2021.

History

It will host a variety of content from Disney's studios, primarily general entertainment content (including programs for mature audiences) not carried on Disney+, as well as live sports from ESPN. The platform will include content library from FX, Freeform, Hulu, ABC Signature, 20th Television, 20th Century Studios, Searchlight Pictures, Touchstone Pictures, and Hollywood Pictures. Star+ will serve the same purpose as the Star hub which was integrated into the Disney+ service in several other countries on February 23, 2021.[1][2][3]

In April 2021 and again two months later, Disney was facing a trademark dispute in Brazil, Argentina and Mexico with Lionsgate's Starz Entertainment (StarzPlay) over the use of the Star brand in Latin America.[4] The Wrap reported that Disney had five days to respond to the Brazil lawsuit.[5] A week later, Disney won the dispute and is allowed to use the brand. In July, Disney lost an appeal in court in Brazil to the name dispute with Lionsgate.[6] In August, Disney and Starz did made an agreement and Disney is allowed to use the Star+ name in Brazil once again.[7]

On May 13, 2021, Disney announced that the launch of Star+ in Latin America would be delayed to August 31.[8][9]

In August 2021, Disney and Starz reached a settlement over the brand name issue allowing Star+ to launch in Latin America on August 31 as scheduled. The lawsuit was dropped after the deal was reached.[10]
