The iPhone SE (officially second-generation iPhone SE) is a smartphone designed and marketed by Apple Inc. It is part of the 13th generation of the iPhone alongside the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max. Announced on 15 April 2020 at 11 AM EST, the iPhone SE serves as a successor to both the first-generation iPhone SE and the iPhone 8. Pre-orders will begin on April 17, 2020, and will be available on April 24, 2020.

History

A successor to the iPhone SE has been rumored since 2017, just a year after the device was released.[3]

The phone also had two other rumored names: iPhone SE 2 and (more recently) iPhone 9, due to this phone sharing a design with the iPhone 8.

In March 2020, cases for the phone were reportedly being shipped to Best Buy,[4] showing an iPhone with an iPhone 8-sized body, a single camera lens for the regular model.[4] Belkin screen protectors for this phone had also being sold at Apple, compatible with the regular-sized versions of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 7. However, the iPhone SE branding was quickly removed.[5][4]

Design

The iPhone SE features a design with an aluminum frame, and its front and back is made out of glass. The phone's external design and dimensions are nearly identical to that of the iPhone 8, with the exception of a centered Apple logo. It features bezels on the top and bottom of the front and a home button integrated with Touch ID.[6]

The iPhone SE is available in three colors; White, Black, and Product Red.[2]

Specifications

Hardware

The iPhone SE incorporates the Apple A13 Bionic system-on-chip (SoC) with an M13 motion coprocessor. It will be available in three internal storage configurations; 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB.[2]

Display

The iPhone SE features the same Retina HD display found on the iPhone 8.[2] However, 3D Touch is replaced by Haptic Touch.

Camera

The iPhone SE features a 12 MP rear camera similar to the wide camera of iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro. The camera has a ƒ/1.8 aperture, with autofocus, optical image stabilization, and a quad-LED True Tone flash. It is capable of recording 4K video at 24 fps, 30 fps, or 60 fps, 1080p HD video at 30 fps or 60 fps, or 720p HD video at 30 fps. The phone can also take panoramas up to 63 MP, and is capable of shooting photos in burst mode.[2]

The front camera of the iPhone SE is a 7 MP camera with ƒ/2.2 aperture and autofocus, capable of shooting 1080p HD video at 30 fps.[2]

Both the front and rear cameras of the iPhone SE support Smart HDR, Portrait mode and Portrait Lighting.[2] Unlike the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro, iPhone SE does not support Night mode.

Software

The iPhone SE will ship with iOS 13, which includes Apple Pay and supports Apple Card.[2]
