Biography

Early life

Freston grew up in Doraville and later in Dunwoody, a suburb outside of Atlanta, GA Her mother, Joan, and her father, Bill, worked together in a printing store they owned in Dunwoody.; she has two younger brothers, Kevin and Jon.

Kathy began modeling at the age of 16 and soon moved to New York and then Europe, living and working in Paris, Milan, Munich and then later in Sydney, Australia. When she moved back to New York and then Los Angeles, Freston became a commercial actress, landing spots for Revlon, Budget Gourmet, and Zena Jeans, among others. Freston frequently said she never really felt like a model, and started studying meditation in her spare time, working with various spiritual teachers and pushing herself toward personal growth. She also wrote poetry and stories, and was first published in Collector’s Photography Magazine, launching her desire to write professionally.

Freston was so moved by how powerful meditation could be for healing and resetting one’s life, that she began making her own guided meditation recordings. She said, "… I started creating tapes for friends and realized, "Hey, this is very useful to people". People "came to her for counseling," and so she became a meditation counselor, helping people find relationships or create abundance, get pregnant, or deal with disease. She helped Cyrinda Fox, ex-wife of Steven Tyler, find peace with her cancer diagnosis, and became a minister long enough to preside over the wedding of Cyrinda Fox [1] to her boyfriend while on her deathbed.

Career

Freston's book, The Lean: A Revolutionary (and Simple!) 30-Day Plan for Healthy, Lasting Weight Loss, was named one of VegNews' "Top 12 Vegan Books of 2012." [2]

Freston started a petition titled "It's Time For A Healthy, Meatless Option (Please!)" that has received over 200,000 signatures to get McDonald's to offer vegan options.[3]

Freston took part in The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine's Vegetarian Caucus luncheon on Capitol Hill to raise awareness among congressional staff about the health and nutrition benefits of a plant-based lifestyle. Freston was part of the Caucus that helped to "provide oral testimony at the 2015 USDA Dietary Guidelines meetings on January 14. At this meeting, they each stood up and gave testimony on why animal products should be removed from USDA Dietary Guidelines, which was updated in 2015. At the Veggie Caucus, each of the speakers divulged their experiences with public health and discussed the role of the Dietary Guidelines in shaping federal nutrition recommendations and policies."[4]

Freston was added to Vanity Fair's 2009 "International Best-Dressed List." [5]

She has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show (initially as a favor to her then-husband Tom)and across Winfrey's network relating to a detox diet.[6][7]

Freston was known for her loud support of California's Prop 2, a ballot measure that – among other things – required that by January 1, 2015, egg-laying hens raised in California be able to stand up, lie down, turn around, and fully extend their wings.[8]

Her work has been featured in the magazines Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar, Self, W, and Fitness. She is also a regular contributor to the Huffington Post.[9]
