iPadOS 17 is the upcoming fifth major release of the iPadOS operating system developed by Apple for its iPad line of tablet computers. The successor to iPadOS 16, it was announced at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 5, 2023 and is scheduled to be released in late 2023 alongside iOS 17.
iPadOS 17 drops support for the first generation iPad Pro, and the fifth generation iPad, making it the first iPadOS version to work only on iPads with Apple Pencil support.
Currently, the operating system is in beta, and it is open to people who are enrolled in the Apple Developer Program. The public version is expected to release in July 2023. The final version should release in September 2023.
System features
Lock screen
- The lock screen has been redesigned to match the appearance of iOS 16 and beyond.
PDF document handling
- iPadOS can now identify PDF forms fields for quicker text input.
Siri
- Users can now simply say "Siri" instead of "Hey Siri" to activate Siri by voice.
App features
Health App
- The Apple Health app is now available on iPad.
Notes App
- The Notes app now supports real time collaboration between users in PDF documents.
Mail App
- When you receive a verification code by email, the Mail app will automatically type the code to a box where it says to put the sent code in.
Compatibility (Supported devices)
iPadOS 17 requires an A10 chip or newer, which means it drops support for iPad models with A9 and A9X chips, such as the iPad Pro (1st generation) and the iPad (5th generation).[2]
iPadOS 17 will be supported on devices with an A10 chip or later. However, devices with an A10 or A10X SoC (That is, the 2nd gen iPad Pro, the 6th gen iPad and the 7th gen iPad) could have limited support.
