Pattern Day Trading
Please reconsider your reversion of the edit to Pattern Day Trading. You claimed it "appeared unconstructive" but it was a completely legitimate addition to the finance topic. Inkerman —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.252.50.41 (talk) 17:46, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

"Common knowledge" does not obviate the need for sources, and should make your task of finding and supplying them that much simpler. Alansohn (talk) 20:37, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for uploading images/media to Wikipedia! There is, however, another Wikimedia Foundation project called Wikimedia Commons, a central media repository for all free media. In the future, please consider creating an account and uploading your media there instead. That way, all of the other language Wikipedias can use them too, as well as our many sister projects. This will also allow our visitors to search for, view and use our media in one central location. If you wish to move previous uploads to Commons, see Wikipedia:Moving images to the Commons (you may view images you have previously uploaded by going to your user contributions on the left and choosing the 'image' namespace from the drop down box). Please note that non-free content, such as images claimed as fair use, cannot be uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons. coordinators for wpnj?
what do you think of this for wpnj? shirulashem (talk) 17:00, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
- I guess I have been a de facto coordinator, but there's no downside to having multiple people involved. Alansohn (talk) 17:35, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
- correct. you have been the de facto coordinator. i'm basically trying to accomplish two things: 1- make it easier for newcomers to the project to know who to contact and 2- more importantly, as per the wikiproject guide, give some people responsibility for the administrative tasks involved in maintaining and growing the project. i know i'm new to the project so i hope i'm not speaking "out of turn" it's just that i'm eager to see the project grow. depending on how you feel, i'd like to put the following up on the project's talk page for consideration:
To coordinate the "inner workings" of our WikiProject, I propose the implementation of a coordinator department to be responsible for the maintenance tasks of the WikiProject. Therefore, the proposal is as follows:

- We have accomplished a tremendous amount with WPNJ even if things aren't hopping, but I agree that a re-evaluation of our progress can help fill in even more. We've filled in articles for every (or nearly every) municipality, state and federal legislator, school district, public high school, etc. Your efforts on evaluating articles has been a tremendous help. My only suggested change might be to invite any other WPNJ members who might be interested in serving as coordinators, on a more the merrier basis. Please let me know what we can do to reignite WPNJ. Drew Pickles
It's silly, but true. I provided sources of why it's notable but you removed it saying it was vandalism. The most popular video on youtube about Drew has 95,658 views. Iamthegrant (talk) 15:33, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
- The question is if the material is encyclopedic even if "true". The other question is that the interpretation is your synthesis based on your original research, and is not based on reliable and verifiable sources on his status as a gay icon. Alansohn (talk) 15:36, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Vandals and crap
For what it is worth to you, whenever I see that you've made a reversion on a page that I monitor, I have found I need not bother checking the page. Thanks for your efforts in patrolling these pages, and moreso, keeping the inane song and Simpsons/South Park references out of pop culture/media portrayal sections in biographies. - Thanks for the kind note. It's amazing how seeing vandalism on an article just degrades the entire content of the page. I do make mistakes, and I have more than a handful of apologies that I have issued, but I do try to make sure that a revert takes care of all of the vandalism, not just the latest crap. Thanks again for the kinds words. Alansohn (talk) 21:43, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
- It's appreciated. I know that a Wiki-friend who does anti-vandalism work is frequently targeted herself, mostly by IPs that take exception to her changes. It's too often thankless work. NJSIAA athletic conferences?
I was just wondering if you know of any more NJSIAA conferences besides the ones listed in "Category:New Jersey high school athletic conferences"? If you take a look at the NJSIAA Wikipedia page, go to the bottom and check out all the navboxes I've created over the past week. Chronic fatigue syndrome is doomed
I'm done trying to build consensus with that entry --- there are editors with strong narrow POV who do not know the literature and they intend to keep their empire. Example: I attempted to build consensus on who are experts, using the MD's and researchers from the CDC as a starting point, as well as textbooks (Books targeted for clincial use), and they delete without discussion this material. For well known and published articles they deem them to be "unreliable" although the CDC uses the same articles in the same journals...
I trust someone will escalate this issue to someone that can do something. Is there a place to registered complaints against a crew such as this?

- With respect Alansohn why is Lassesen justified in calling me and other editors unknowledgeable, with an "empire" and all of other attacks he makes on us here and on talk pages, like saying people that do not agree on him have a pro psychological POV? I do not have any relation on CFS, I am not a patient a doctor and I do not even like psychology! Lassesen tho is a well-known internet activist, he said so on his talk, who opposes proven treatments for CFS and promotes alternative medicine remedies. That is great, I think it is good he is so active and i respect him and his views, but it is not how we write medical articles at WP, it is not a place for activism and experimental research.
- Chronic fatigue syndrome is a medical article, it should be most based from peer review secondary sources in major journals. I have tried explain this. Self published books and obscure primary sources from journals which do not exist any more are not best sources for medical articles.
- I am thinking, Lassesen has alot of knowledge and alot to say on CFS, but i am hoping, he will try and learn more about Wikipedia guidelines and not be so confrontationing. Some times I am not so polite like I should be, I am working on myself, but I am also just trying, follow WP guidelines. Thx, RetroS1mone talk 05:24, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

Hell, My addition to Cherlottetown Rural Highschool:
The annual hackey sac competition is very well received from the raiders. They hack using a "Raider Sac." This sport can be very brutal and has resulted in 5 injuries in the past 7 tournaments. The raiders often challenge students of Colonel Gray High School to participate. The Rural and Gray has had a long rivalry and Raiders often refer to it as "The Gay." This is shown as disrespectful. Agree with dumping poop section on your user page
It seems like it wouldn't be hard to create a tool reverting any edit using "poop" from an anonymous IP. (And add to that "penis", "gay", "fuck" -- where the word isn't otherwise already used in article.)
I created the anti-vandalism "Piano non troppo" account to save my serious work from vindictive vandals. I discovered that I enjoyed the anti-vandalism process. In fact, it made me feel more a part of the community. My other accounts, with hundreds of hours of painstaking work, got no barnstars. The rate at which those accounts have edits reverted is ten times as high as Piano non troppo's. Apparently other editors recognize my "worth" in part by what other community service I've done. Or perhaps what other edits they can readily evaluate. So, strangely, the anti-vandalism patrol has had unanticipated positive consequences for me. And, maybe, somehow (I see Wikipedia as a social experiment) society is indicating what about my work it values. Less my expertise, than my social participation. Regards, Piano non troppo (talk) 09:19, 10 January 2009 (UTC)
delta lodge edit
I have provided a neutral and factually backed addendum to the delta lodge page..... However i find my slef under due arrest. It seems every time i edit i get deleted, i just feel that if your going to provide a nuetral and objective explanation of the subject you should include all facts, as i have and provded sources. I also concur wi the sentiment that the delta lodge subject matter is not notable seing as how they are a defunct organization (not in good standing at the university of north texas... this organization is not mandated by any governing body. The statement that they are a "fraternity in good standing at the university of north texas is fraudulent. They posses no charter/mandate; they hold sparse residence at best, and were relocated by the city due to alarming concerns. To reiterate i fing the delta lodge page to be an apologists rendition with not factual evidence to back it up... it contains claims that are unfound and jingoistic at best. If one is to present subject matter with the confines of an encylopedic medium, one would hope that all facts are heralded not just the self promoting smarmy dialoge of advertisers —Preceding unsigned comment added by DeltaLodgeDown (talk • contribs) 21:58, 10 January 2009 (UTC)
The Unborn (film) edit
My edit to this page did not constitute vandalism. Clear shots of a camel toe in a PG-13 movie can be considered objectionable. If you are going to take pride in your monitoring of these pages, please provide some insight as to why an edit is not acceptable. I will now revert the page, with an added citation. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.34.63.149 (talk) 00:50, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
- In Wikipedia, claims require reliable and verifiable sources. Without sources supporting your claims they were removed. If you can find a reliable source that supports the claim that a cameltoe is clearly visible and is objectionable in a PG-13 film, I will have no objection. Without such a source, it will be removed again. Alansohn (talk) 01:03, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
use of rollback
You rolled back this edit but it was not vandalism. The cited source indeed supports and carries the term Zionist hence the edit was clearly meant to be in good faith, however PoV or clumsily worded. Please take this as a friendly reminder to only use rollback on vandalism (you should have either used undo, or done what you wanted through an edit window). Thanks and all the best. Gwen Gale (talk) 03:06, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for the note. While I thought I had read the original content in its entirety, the use of the inflammatory term "Zionist enterprise", even though the words were located in the original article, appeared to have been deliberately taken out of context and misused. I appreciate your concern about this edit, and its totality appears to have been made in good faith. Alansohn (talk) 03:19, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
- Sourced, good faith edits can indeed come off as untowards and nettlesome to some readers, which is one reason why rollback is so straightforwardly meant only for vandalism. Thanks for your understanding. Gwen Gale (talk) 03:35, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

Emmanuel de Mérode
I urge you to study independent (!!) material about Emmanuel de Mérode, make your mind and act accordingly. All what happens in Kivu stinks starting by the death of Dian Fossey. Greed and arrogance. Avoid any material of National Geographic which TV channel is mostly owned by Fox.
Some people are risking their life to help civilian populations in the park of Virungas, while Emmanuel is apparently safely editing his bio from Nairobi. You should not let Emmanuel de Mérode writing his own bio. Everything in it must be proved. Due to my viligance, it has been reduced to very little because most of it was pretentious or unubtantiated. Please study the history of the article. Please suppress the mention of training as an anthropologist until more precision is given. 82.67.232.89 (talk) 22:00, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

New York City Meetup
|
In the afternoon, we will hold a session dedicated to meta:Wikimedia New York City activities, look at our approval by the Chapters Committee, develop ideas for chapter projects at museums and libraries throughout our region, and hold salon-style group discussions on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects (see the November meeting's minutes and the December mini-meetup's minutes).
We'll make preparations for our exciting museum photography Wikipedia Loves Art! February bonanza (on Flickr, on Facebook) with Shelley from the Brooklyn Museum and Alex from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
We'll also be collecting folks to join our little Wikipedia Takes the Subway adventure which will be held the day after the meeting.
In the evening, we'll share dinner and chat at a local restaurant, and generally enjoy ourselves and kick back.
You can add or remove your name from the New York City Meetups invite list at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Invite list.
To keep up-to-date on local events, you can also join our mailing list.

Baton Rouge Cajun Zydeco Schedule cajunradio - STOP DELETING MY LINK !!!!
Why are you objecting to me adding cajun music schedules to cajun music? It is related and appropriate. It is not promotion. If you would look at it, it is a non-profit website strictly preserving cajun culture and cajun music which is directly related to the cajun music. Everyone in Louisiana recognizes that www.cajunradio.org is a cajun community resource and not a personal website. Just because it it maintained by Clarence does not make it a personal website. Please review content of links that you delete prior to deleting them! Cajunradio (talk) 04:00, 12 January 2009 (UTC)
- The website in question is largely promotional and adds little to the articles in question. While it is vaguely relevant on some of the articles, in articles such as History of Cajun music the links add absolutely nothing. The pattern of your edits, which seem to add links exclusively to articles related to businesses promoted on the website in question, adds further concerns that WP:EL is being violated. Deletion of Chief Paul D. Lilly article
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am E. Williams, the firm representing Chief Paul D. Lilly of Texas. We were hired by the Chief to create a Wikipedia Page for him, as he is overwhelmed with requests for information and his background within the Community Policing Field. However, you deleted his page a few hours ago, under the assertion that he was not a "notable" man. The contents of the page are his intellectual property and you are hereby given notice that you must restore the page and its information with 72 hours, or you may be held liable under both USC and International Intellectual Property Laws. Further, because of your actions, a Google search now produces his name and a page that states his profile was removed because you did not feel that he was a notable person. This statement and the posting of such a "flag", constitutes Defamation of Character, and because it is in written form in a public Doman, it also constitutes Slander under both United States and International law (case law and codified statutes).
I will allow you 72 hours to rectify this issue without a demand for compensation for my client's deleted intellectual property. Otherwise my firm will most certainly take appropriate action both against you, and against Wikipedia itself for allowing your actions. If necessary, we will apply for subpoenas to compel Wikipedia to provide your name and complete personal identifiers for appropriate court enforcement action.
Most Respectfully,
E. Williams Firm, LLC —Preceding unsigned comment added by Paullillyusa (talk • contribs)
- I am most intrigued by the notion that the E. Williams Firm was "hired by the Chief to create a Wikipedia Page" for Chief Paul D. Lilly of Texas and is now demanding that it be recreated. I'm not sure why a firm that has so little understanding of Wikipedia policy and of the [GNU Free Documentation License]] under which all content is turned over for other readers to copy and edit. It's a shame to have to wait a whole 72 hours to see the legal fireworks that will take place when absolutely nothing occurs in response to these demands. Alansohn (talk) 04:54, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

the note at the top of your user page
hi i'm not sure how else to leave you a comment. I am a teacher who has assigned the book "the Winter King" to my freshman students. They have a test tomorrow morning on it so to catch who didn't read and instead relied on Wiki to "read" it I played around with some of the details. Another administator emailed me and promised to leave it as is until tomorrow morning when he/she will revert it back to its originial content, which I had also planned on doing once the test was given. I realize alot of activity has been made on that page today (most likely the work of my freshman boys who know alot of their friends will be reading it tonight) but please leave the changes that "make sense" for now. I promise it will be fixed in the morning. Thanks (originally left at 23:31, 8 January 2009) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.225.189.242 (talk • contribs)

Frank Prewitt
"It appears the author of the "Frank Prewitt" page is no other than J. Frank Prewitt himself. He is an individual with at least a 15-year history of questionable behavior who has admitted on the stand during a federal trial of one of the criminal defendants that he committed illegal acts. He claims that he did not become a government informant under pressure, but instead acted as a good citizen. Little exists to substantiate that claim. In an extraordinary act of self-justification, he authored a poorly written book to exonerate himself and recast himself as the hero of the whole affair. As part of his page, the book jacket, both cover and promotional text, are included.
I have made attempts to correct his page to reflect reality, but he has it on a watch list and amends each correction to again promote himself." - ACTIVIST (editor)
ALANSOHN: It appears you are well versed in Wikipedia jargon, rules, rights, privileges, and writing. As a fellow user, thank you for your contributions! Two things for you. First, I am not "Frank Prewitt". I do have a spine, and if I was, I would say I was, and not have to deal with the inequities of activist and his/her or its constant barrage of unsubstantiated claims. Like you, I want a fair and true article. Despite my abilities or inabilities according to activist to write such I have really given up. Obviously activist has some type of vendetta against Frank Prewitt. He/she or it continues to subtly change wording to honestly discredit anything and everything I edit. If he or she is so angry they should just call Prewitt (listed in the Anchorage, Alaska phone book)and tell them there feelings instead of blatantly editing in a liable fashion.I have made the section as unbiased as possible given the left leaning opinions of ADN (Anchorage Daily News). In reality the section has all be references and has edited by experienced editors and contributors like yourself, so I see no need for activist continued editing/whining.In my opinion articles are supposed to be fair and balanced stating the good and bad and giving the ultimate reader a real perspective. The article I originally wrote has all of that...not continued "negative press" that has yet to solidify into anything wikipedia worthy, but is hearsay and speculation, as activist continues to edit. I have not idea what kinda of "reality" ACTIVIST believes the Frank Prewitt section should aspire too? I understand and except your edits in regards to Prewitt's book. Point taken, understood. Please advise on additional questions. Again, thank you. Andregen8 (talk) 04:14, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

Need your help
I don't want to engage in an edit war with someone, but I feel like the change that I've made to Ohio High School Athletic Association is completely justified, whereas EagleFan doesn't think so. I don't think that listing all high school state champions in every single sport (regardless of the state) is notable. If someone wants to find out then they go to the OHSAA website, not the Wikipedia page on the organization itself. If anything, the list should be its own separate article (at best). Wasting 80,699 kb of space on an article lags the servers, slows down the page load time and for what? To read about non-notable high school achievements. Can you please respond to EagleFan and otherwise show why I am not in the wrong for this please. Thanks. -Jrcla2 (talk)(contribs) 00:35, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

Uncalled for Warning
Alansohn,
I have been attempting to update Callum Ferguson's nickname to reflect his actual nickname, which is "Cheese". However, I believe you have labelled this as a Level 2 warning. Could you please allow this change to go ahead?
I had looked for any source to support "Cheese" as a nickname before issuing the warning and found none. A more thorough search after you left your note also could not find a single reliable and verifiable source that calls Ferguson by the nickname "Cheese". An edit with no edit summary by an editor with very other edits raises red flags and I hope you understand why I had questions about the edit when it was made and have even more concerns now. While it is certainly possible that Australian sources are not as easy to find, their absence would need to be addressed before readding this nickname. Alansohn (talk) 15:26, 15 January 2009 (UTC)
I understand your concern, However I can assure you that Callum Ferguson's nickname is indeed "Cheese". I attended high school with Callum and coined the nickname myself due to the poor quality of his jokes, as well as his love for cheese. Although the internet may be a wonderful place to spend the majority of your spare time (which appears to be plentiful), it does not hold all the answers to life's questions. Again, I request that you leave the nickname "Cheese" on Callum's page next time I change it.

I erased the "hardest language" section in the article "Hungarian language" as it was not scientific in its content but subjective. (As a Wikipedia user I am a novice, and I did not intent any vandalism. Sorry for the misunderstanding.) What about the merging the article "hardest language" within the article "language learning aptitude"? It is strongly urged in that article by Wikipedia for the same reason I mentioned above. Since you founded WikiProject New Jersey...is it active anymore? I notice the lists of FAs, GAs , etc., are out of date/incomplete. - As a group, it operates more like a volunteer fire department; we get together every now and then when some issue comes up. There are many editors who are active in different aspects and parts of the state, but we've had very little active collaboration. One of the things where we were effective was in some year-end wish lists at WT:NJ, where we did find some things to work on together. West Deptford High School
Alansohn, do you think the edits by User:Nquinn91 to West Deptford High School are needed? Jrcla2 (talk) 21:07, 16 July 2015 (UTC)
- Alansohn, Jrcla2- I could make that table just for championship wins, to keep it notable, let me know. I'm working on getting more data from before 2002 as well, so before I include that we should come to a consensus. Also, if it does end up being just championship wins, how would you suggest organizing the different titles? Columns of "year" "theme" and "titles" with that last one just being text? Or do you think it should go back to being a list paragraph? Nquinn91 (talk) 21:28, 16 July 2015 (UTC)
- Nquinn91 and Jrcla2, I would suggest trimming down and focusing on the championships and putting the details in prose, rather than as a table. If this was an article about the band, it might make sense, but for a school article it's not justified. Any thoughts? Alansohn (talk) 14:22, 17 July 2015 (UTC)

Defining Small Cat
I have long thought that WP:SMALLCAT was too subjective and that lead to confusion, people creating categories that they didn't know were against policies, and wasting everyone's time in CFD discussions. I think something saying that anything below 5 articles (or 10 or 2) is too small unless 75% of the overall scheme has more than that would be more useful than the current "I know it when I see it" standard.
Regardless of my numbers, would you favor that kind of hard definition? RevelationDirect (talk) 13:12, 24 July 2015 (UTC)
- The underlying cutoff is hard to appreciate or understand. I'm editing the associated article and I had just looked at Category:People from Spring Lake Heights, New Jersey and breathed a sigh of relief as it has four entries. There are 51 subcategories in the parent Category:People from Monmouth County, New Jersey, of which there are six categories with fewer than five entries. What makes five enough and four too few? I think it's tough to get beyond "I know it when I see it", but a structure where most of the categories are substantial (above a threshold) and some are small (below that number) would make more sense and clarify some of the situations I'm dealing with. It's a worthwhile starting point. Alansohn (talk) 13:27, 24 July 2015 (UTC)

Use of word 'unprecedented' on article for Moorestown High School
Hi Alansohn,
Please reconsider the edit to remove 'unprecedented'. In most cases, this word is misused. Sports feats and records are rarely precedents. A precedent means something LIKE that has never happened, so much so that it is used to address things in the future. Meaning, it often comes with a rule change, new category, new policy, or has some impact on behavior, etc. You can read more about this on User_talk:Entirelybs. Even if something is unique or even a record, it is generally not a precedent. Unprecedented is often misused to mean 'never happened before' which is a mistake. The word is also often used as WP:Peacock, which should be eliminated, too.
Thanks, Brad Entirelybs (talk) 20:41, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
- Entirelybs, I agree that the word is overused and often misused. But if you believe that the word means "sets a precedent", you're on thin ground. The prevailing definition is something that was "never done or known before", which is a standard that is met here and in the overwhelming majority of cases where you've removed it. Furthermore this source is one of many that supports the use of "unprecedented" to refer to the team's accomplishments. There is so much to do in Wikipedia and I can't imagine that ridding the site of this one word will move the objective of building this encyclopedia. Just my opinion. Alansohn (talk) 20:51, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
- Actually, unprecedented simply means without precedent. I acknowledge it is used a lot to mean "never been done before" - which is a big mistake here and in journalism lately. Writers and broadcasters do it all the time (I cringe when I hear it on ESPN). Another mistake is using the word to try and prop up something with an adjective, akin to WP:Peacock. I blame the internet generation, and the proliferation of content using quick-hit methods like blogs, which usually don't have much in the way of actual research or citing proper references, etc. But I digress.
- To understand the mistake we have to review what the root - precedent - really means. Precedent means something that is used as an example or guide for how to address something in the future. There is nothing similar, no example already, nothing to guide how to deal with similar events in the future. Thus, a precedent will be accompanied with some change, new rule, demonstrated impact, consequence or implication. A good litmus test is to ask - "so what does this mean?". If it is just an interesting fact or new record, then that is all it really is: an interesting fact or new record. Most of the offenses I find are sports related, such as pertaining to consecutive-x type streaks, or beating the previous record (even by the smallest of margins).
- By the way, simply finding an article on some website where someone used the word 'unprecedented' doesn't really help. (Why are they an authority anyway?) They made the same aforementioned mistake first, and you're just carrying it forward. In my research I cited both Merriam-Webster and Oxford English dictionaries, and both support the definition and usage I am referring to. Just because people use words wrong for so long (literally vs. figuratively is another common pitfall), doesn't mean we shouldn't attempt to correct the error of their ways. Clean up on this site is encouraged, and that is what I've been doing. Otherwise it appears as acceptable and nobody learns anything or improves. Less experienced writers will emulate what exists, and develop the same bad habits.
- In the end, I think the best for an encyclopedic format is just state facts and move on. Entirelybs (talk) 22:06, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
- Entirelybs, I've seen some of the other arguments you've made on your talk page and elsewhere and I think that you're making a linguistic argument that doesn't fly. The words "discover" and "recover" both unambiguously have "cover" as their root, but "discover" never means to remove a cover and recover hardly ever means to put one back on (except in the sense of putting a cover back on a pot, when it's usually spelled "re-cover"). Anyone on a crusade that argues that "discover" and "recover" should never be used except in their hyper-literal original meaning would be looked at as a lunatic. My OED includes a quote of "a speech of unprecedented boldness" as a citation, which further contradicts your argument about usage; I assume it was not the first bold speech in history. Your insistence that "unprecedented" is based exclusively on the literal meeting of "precedent" is flat-out wrong. I'm becoming more inclined to join those who believe that a blanket revert should be done of these changes. Alansohn (talk) 23:33, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
- In the end, I think the best for an encyclopedic format is just state facts and move on. Entirelybs (talk) 22:06, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
- If someone used recover or discover incorrectly, then an editors purpose would be to correct that mistake, either by replacing it with a better word to correctly convey the meaning (such as by using one of the variants that has the proper meaning) or perhaps by removing it entirely. A better analogy to compare the unprecedented issue is 'cover' and 'uncover'. The use of 'un' doesn't materially change the meaning, except for the contra position meaning 'without'. Using 're' and dis' on cover do actually differ as you indicated. Look, I'm not saying that words only have 1 meaning - it's just that 'never happened before' isn't one of the meanings for unprecedented (at least not a proper meaning, it has been misused over time so much, like slang words that are common in use but English professors don't accept in formal papers).
- To use your example of the speech of unprecedented boldness, does that mean it 'has never happened before'? No. But it may imply that it changes the way speeches are made (speeches are designed to shock or be memorable). See - again it is the impact or change. A better comparison on the speech example to what I'm saying about the misuse of unprecedented is : if speech #1 was 3:00 minutes long, and speech 2 was 3:01, would you call that 2nd speech 'unprecedented'? Not really, not based on time. It might qualify based on the content if it caused people to change some behavior, alter votes, any result that is different. Unless it was so exaggerated - like a politician filibustering (which works in some cases - so the first one to really do it well set a precedent that others followed to accomplish a similar thing). But if one filibuster was 12:00:00 hours, and the next was 12:01:00, that second one is not the precedent - only the first one is. That's the point here. It's not just that it is the first time, but that it also has some impact or change - the one that was the example to follow, the guide, the one that changed behavior. If a subsequent filibuster was so long that it causes congress to set rules or limits, that could also be a precedent. Entirelybs (talk) 14:56, 31 July 2015 (UTC)
- It's funny sometimes how 2 people can see things so differently. The example you gave and you said 'contradicts my argument' I see as actually supporting my argument. Note that none of the examples say something like "never happened before" or "exceeded the previous amount by 1". Later, you suggest that my mistake is "that 'unprecedented' is based exclusively on the literal meeting of 'precedent' is flat-out wrong." But that is exactly how the authority/references (MW / OED) do it. I'm simply trying to help people understand, by using arguments consistent with authoritative sources. Why is that so wrong? Unprecedented is NOT an independent word with a new meaning all on its own.

Can You Confirm that All New Jersey Places Have US Census Population boxes updated to 2014?
Hi, I've been adding US Census Population templates to all incorporated places in the United States (with the help of a script I wrote). It appears you've taken care of everywhere in New Jersey. Is that correct? I figured I'd ask you rather than waste time on doing it myself if it's already been done. Thanks. DemocraticLuntz (talk) 21:36, 13 August 2015 (UTC)
- DemocraticLuntz I think that they're all done, but I think that there are a handful that were missed. If you run the script, you might be able to doublecheck that it's 100% done. I would be curious to learn more about your scripting methodology for exactly this kind of editing. Where were you three months ago when I did this by hand? And a year or two ago when I did the historical population templates? Kudos on all the work you've done. Alansohn (talk) 21:58, 13 August 2015 (UTC)
- DemocraticLuntz An example of one that was missed is West Wildwood, New Jersey and I'm sure that there are a handful of other communities in the same boat. I'd be curious to see your script in action. Alansohn (talk) 22:49, 13 August 2015 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 September newsletter
The finals for the 2015 Wikicup has now begun! Congrats to the 8 contestants who have survived to the finals, and well done and thanks to everyone who took part in rounds 3 and 4.
In round 3, we had a three-way tie for qualification among the wildcard contestants, so we had 34 competitors. The leader was by far Casliber (submissions) in Group B, who earned 1496 points. Although 913 of these points were bonus points, he submitted 15 articles in the DYK category. Second place overall was Coemgenus (submissions) at 864 points, who although submitted just 2 FAs for 400 points, earned double that amount for those articles in bonus points. Everyone who moved forward to Round 4 earned at least 100 points.
The scores required to move onto the semifinals were impressive; the lowest scorer to move onto the finals was 407, making this year's Wikicup as competitive as it's always been. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:
- Cas Liber (submissions), who is competing in his sixth consecutive Wikicup final, again finished the round in first place, with an impressive 1666 points in Pool B. Casliber writes about the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. A large bulk of his points this round were bonus points.
- Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points), second place both in Pool B and overall, earned the bulk of his points with FPs, mostly depicting currency.
- Cwmhiraeth (submissions), first in Pool A, came in third. His specialty is natural science articles; in Round 4, he mostly submitted articles about insects and botany. Five out of the six of the GAs he submitted were level-4 vital articles.
- Harrias (submissions), second in Pool A, took fourth overall. He tends to focus on articles about cricket and military history, specifically the 1640s First English Civil War.
- West Virginian (submissions), from Pool A, was our highest-scoring wildcard. West Virginia tends to focus on articles about the history of (what for it!) the U.S. state of West Virginia.
- Rodw (submissions), from Pool A, likes to work on articles about British geography and places. Most of his points this round were earned from two impressive accomplishments: a GT about Scheduled monuments in Somerset and a FT about English Heritage properties in Somerset.
- Rationalobserver (submissions), from Pool B, came in seventh overall. RO earned the majority of her points from GARs and PRs, many of which were earned in the final hours of the round.
- Calvin999 (submissions), also from Pool B, who was competing with RO for the final two spots in the final hours, takes the race for most GARs and PRs—48.
The intense competition between RO and Calvin999 will continue into the finals. They're both eligible for the Newcomers Trophy, given for the first time in the Wikicup; whoever makes the most points will win it.
Good luck to the finalists; the judges are sure that the competition will be fierce!

List of municipalities in Sussex County, New Jersey
I created List of municipalities in Sussex County, New Jersey. Anything you see that can be improved? better categorized? places where I could link to it? I'd like to bring it up as a featured list candidate. I'm also working on List of New Jersey state parks. I hope you're doing well. JackTheVicar (talk) 00:50, 3 October 2015 (UTC)
- JackTheVicar, I think it's an interesting approach that could be used in the 20 other counties, once the Sussex article is fleshed out. The main thing to think about is what is it that distinguishes List of municipalities in Sussex County, New Jersey from the parent Sussex County, New Jersey. Alansohn (talk) 14:40, 4 October 2015 (UTC)
- ultimately I'd like to shrink the Sussex County article which is rather bloated...like the geology section there is ok, it's not that scientific enough for my tastes, but a lot of that detail needs to be farmed out to other articles (like what ive been doing to my slow Kittatinny Mountain and Papakating Creek rewrites in my sandbox, and the sections drastically revised...a table like i have at the List of municipalities would take a lot of space in the Sussex Co article but the information in the table needed to be put in one spot together. At the parent county article, I don't know how I'd address it beyond "Sussex County has 24 municipalities, 1 incorporated as a town, 8 boroughs, 15 Townships". I don't like the bullet point list of municipalities with the census designated places. CDPs are arbitrary to me and tend to confuse some people...like Augusta NJ in Frankford Twsp is a CDP but there's practically nothing there, maybe 50 people in "Augusta" (and the Census Bureau defines it over other place Names which actually have a discrete character and definition...and population that identifies not as Augusta. Strange. Just a few nascent thoughts. I was planning to do a Warren County list next. I'd loathe to do Bergen. Did you see Boroughitis is at FAC? JackTheVicar (talk) 15:11, 4 October 2015 (UTC)
- I'll look at all of them. The Boroughitis article is substantially improved. Alansohn (talk) 17:49, 4 October 2015 (UTC)
I find this deletion to be quite inconsistent. Why delete only these four categories (the most populated ones at that) and keep all the hundreds of others in Category:Deaths by cause?? I'm tempted to take this to WP:DRV but on the other hand, I don't want to risk getting the entire lot of 'em deleted for consistency's sake. Is it worth it? What do you think? -- Ϫ 04:44, 6 October 2015 (UTC)

Your comment
I saw the comment in your edit summary regarding BMK. My intent was to AGF, that this is the Eureka moment. I understand the frustration in worrying that someone doesn't "get it", but I can only suggest to not worry about it until there is evidence that the problem still exists. Blocks will increase then. As an editor also, I'm aware of the dread of WP:CTDAPE. Feel free to ping me if you see that warring is still an issue. Regards.—Bagumba (talk) 04:07, 20 October 2015 (UTC)
- Bagumba, let's see what happens; Maybe he's actually learned a lesson, or maybe he's learned that with enough tendentious wikilawyering you can get away with anything. I agree about the possibilities of WP:LASTCHANCE, but it seems that BMK must have several hundred feet of rope with which to do the job by now. Alansohn (talk) 04:12, 20 October 2015 (UTC)
- I can't speak to any free passes he may or may not have gotten in the past. Looking at the block log, I see that they stayed at 24 hours for longer than I would expect before they escalated recently, but I'm not familiar with the details. Hope for the best, but be prepared for the worst.—Bagumba (talk) 04:25, 20 October 2015 (UTC)
- Bagumba, 3RR is intended to be a bright line rule. The clear 3RR violation at Union Square, Manhattan was followed that same day by a more egregious eight revert violation at Anna Politkovskaya. By using BLP to muddy the waters at the Politkovskaya article, User:Beyond My Ken was successful in baffling the masses with bullshit and convincing those unaware of his history and the details that the issue was BLP when the real issue was edit warring; mixing in some shameless personal attacks only aggravated matters. BMK seems to have learned nothing from his previous blocks, and the problem seems to be getting worse as time goes by. Compliant (and often negligent) administrators look at his rampant excuses and give him yet one more free pass after another. Each additional Get Out of Jail Free card only further emboldens one of Wikipedia's most abusive and disruptive editors. Alansohn (talk) 20:23, 21 October 2015 (UTC)
- Agree, I've blocked editors that hadn't hit 3RR when they should have known better. I wasn't involved before here, and I'm wary to block when many days have passed and presumably an editor has learned. Hopefully it's resolved, if not the next offense should be harsher. Time will tell.—Bagumba (talk) 20:30, 21 October 2015 (UTC)
- I'm leery of any improvement, but time will indeed tell. Let's see what happens. Thanks for listening. Alansohn (talk) 20:34, 21 October 2015 (UTC)

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Willingboro High School. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.
Please be particularly aware that Wikipedia's policy on edit warring states:
- Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made.
- Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.
If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes; work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If you engage in an edit war, you may be blocked from editing. 331dot (talk) 13:06, 29 October 2015 (UTC)
- I don't know who is right and who isn't, but I would suggest that instead of warning the other person whom you have a dispute with, you request help for this situation at somewhere like the Incidents board. 331dot (talk) 13:29, 29 October 2015 (UTC)
- Running to ANI when the other party hasn't been clearly warned is the worst possible thing to do in dealing with malicious edits like these. Given the evidence of a pattern of harassment and hounding, a rational party will find a way to end the problem, while a problem editor will persist. The editor here has been provided that opportunity. Alansohn (talk) 13:36, 29 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi Alansohn, I hope this finds you well! We crossed paths several times in the past. I'm not around here much lately and I don't have a lot of time to commit to building articles, but I ran across something that may be in your wheelhouse. The above article was tagged with a notability maintenance tag, which seems to have spooked the original author and she is second-guessing whether the subject deserves an article. She proceeded to delete portions of the article, which is what drew my attention. See User talk:Angelacarolf for my question and her reply. I think the subject is close to notable, and perhaps with a little more building-out the article could clearly satisfy the notability guideline for authors, academics, or both. But at this point I wasn't comfortable removing the maintenance tag. Can you take a look and see what you think? Regards, Accurizer (talk) 01:43, 30 October 2015 (UTC)
- I haven't seen you around for quite a while. This is an article that makes a clearly credible claim of notability, and has lots of material to support the claim, but needs a lot of work on sourcing and restructuring. I will see if I can devote the time to this article, but I will keep an eye on the article regardless. Alansohn (talk) 03:57, 30 October 2015 (UTC)
Much appreciated! Nice to touch base with you again. Regards, Accurizer (talk) 02:36, 31 October 2015 (UTC)

Hello, I'm Winkelvi. I noticed that you made a comment that didn't seem very civil, so it has been removed. Wikipedia is built on collaboration, so it's one of our core principles to interact with one another in a polite and respectful manner. If you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Moronic? Please dial it down. Disagree, fine, but don't make those kind of statements. Especially in edit summaries where they can't be deleted or stricken. -- WV ● ✉ ✓ 23:46, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
- You are surely not a moron. However, the application of WP:DENY to remove sourced content is patently moronic and blatantly disruptive. Deal with it. Undo the damage, not your perception that you were insulted. Alansohn (talk) 23:50, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
- There's no perception of being insulted, there is, however, evidence that you repeated your personal attack four times. Like I said, disagree with my reasoning, that's fine. Just, please, dial it down. -- WV ● ✉ ✓ 23:54, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
- You have deliberately disrupted Wikipedia to take your revenge out on a blocked user. WP:DENY is a mere essay that should never be used as a pathetic justification to remove sourced content. Anyone using WP:DENY as an excuse to blindly revert content doesn't belong in this encyclopedia. Alansohn (talk) 23:58, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
- There's no perception of being insulted, there is, however, evidence that you repeated your personal attack four times. Like I said, disagree with my reasoning, that's fine. Just, please, dial it down. -- WV ● ✉ ✓ 23:54, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
Please do not attack other editors. Comment on content, not on contributors. Personal attacks damage the community and deter users. Please stay cool and keep this in mind while editing. Last time I'm going to ask you to stop the personal attacks in edit summaries. -- WV ● ✉ ✓ 23:59, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
- Your actions were blatantly disruptive and using an essay as an excuse for this disruption is inexcusable. Imagine if you had stay cool and hadn't decided to delete material from the encyclopedia. Look in the mirror and stop blaming others for the problems you caused. Alansohn (talk) 00:03, 1 November 2015 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015: The results
WikiCup 2015 is now in the books! Congrats to our finalists and winners, and to everyone who took part in this year's competition.
This year's results were an exact replica of last year's competition. For the second year in a row, the 2015 WikiCup champion is Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points). All of his points were earned for an impressive 253 featured pictures and their associated bonus points (5060 and 1695, respectively). His entries constituted scans of currency from all over the world and scans of medallions awarded to participants of the U.S. Space program. Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came in second place; she earned by far the most bonus points (4082), for 4 featured articles, 15 good articles, and 147 DYKs, mostly about in her field of expertise, natural science. Cas Liber (submissions), a finalist every year since 2010, came in third, with 2379 points.
Our newcomer award, presented to the best-performing new competitor in the WikiCup, goes to Rationalobserver (submissions). Everyone should be very proud of the work they accomplished. We will announce our other award winners soon.
A full list of our award winners are:
- Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points) wins the prize for first place and the FP prize for 330 featured pictures in the final round.
- Cwmhiraeth (submissions) wins the prize for second place and the DYK prize for 160 did you knows in the final round (310 in all rounds).
- Cas Liber (submissions) wins the prize for third place and the FA prize for 26 featured articles in all rounds.
- West Virginian (submissions) wins the prize for fourth place
- Calvin999 (submissions) wins a final 8 prize.
- Rationalobserver (submissions) wins a final 8 prize.
- Harrias (submissions) wins a final 8 prize and the FL prize for 11 featured lists.

- ThaddeusB (submissions) wins the news prize for the most news articles in round 3.
We warmly invite all of you to sign up for next year's competition. Discussions and polls concerning potential rules changes are also open, and all are welcome to participate. The WikiCup judges will be back in touch over the coming months, and we hope to see you all in the 2016 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! DYK for Anne Elstner
On 15 November 2015, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Anne Elstner, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that in her 18 years playing the title role on the daily radio soap opera Stella Dallas, Anne Elstner missed only one performance? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Anne Elstner. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Hi Alansohn,
Unfortunately I've been putting up with things like this for quite a while now. I would greatly appreciate it if you could keep a watchful eye over the World's Oldest People project and the stupid number of AfD's currently taking place, because I'd desperately like more editors not yet involved in the project to chime in, so that we don't have a WP:BATTLEGROUND and point-of-view pushing like we do at the moment.

- I always so don't use Wikipedia as your source, but let it direct you to the source. Alansohn (talk) 22:00, 7 December 2015 (UTC)

A Dobos torte for you!
7&6=thirteen (☎) has given you a Dobos torte to enjoy! Seven layers of fun because you deserve it.
To give a Dobos torte and spread the WikiLove, just place {{subst:Dobos Torte}} on someone else's talkpage, whether it be someone you have had disagreements with in the past or a good friend. |

Luo Meizhen AfD
- This behaviour is inflammatory. Please be nice next time. Deryck C. 19:09, 9 December 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for the note. I haven't participated at that AfD in four days. Meanwhile, EEng has battled away with each and every editor who's participated. It's nice to see you jump out of the blue into this matter. I'll look for your other warnings and work on being nicer in the future. Thanks again for the suggestion.
