Civil Rights Figures/Activists

  • José Andrés Tamayo Cortez - Known as Father Tamayo, or Padre Tamayo, he is a moral and spiritual leader of the Honduran resistance movement against the coup. He is a winner of the Goldman Environmental Prize for his two decades of work fighting non-violently against illegal logging and mining in Olancho province, the location of his Catholic parish (he is a Franciscan priest). Prior to the coup, Andrés Tamayo was most famous for organizing large marches from rural Olancho to the capital of Honduras, Tegucigalpa. Some of the more recent marches earned him a meeting with President Manuel Zelaya, with whom he began a productive dialogue (to his surprise, Zelaya being a timber magnate). Since the coup d'etat of June 28, 2009, Tamayo has been a declared enemy of the state: his security (once provided at his request by the government, protecting him from constant harassment and assassination attempts by wealthy interests) was compromised, his parish was taken away from him, his citizenship was stripped (he is a naturalized Honduran born in El Salvador), and he was forced into hiding. He is presently holed up inside the Brazilian embassy with Zelaya. His name has become a rallying cry for members of the resistance, and many credit his constant calls for non-violence with keeping the resistance peaceful. He is very well known in Honduras. This is a fictional character, the central character of Egyptology: Search for the Tomb of Osiris. While the book is part of the Ologies (series), there is nothing in the Egyptology article to suggest that the character of Sands appears in any other books than this, so she can presumable be adequately covered in the existing article.
