Why is this user awesome?

In both her role as a community volunteer and her new role, Moonriddengirl has tirelessly worked to fix serious problems that no one else will, and to mentor people who have struggled to become positive contributors, while maintaining a superhuman level of patience and friendliness. COI notice: she is a friend of mine, but I can't imagine anyone on the project disagreeing with this assessment.

Why is this user awesome?

There are just innumerable reasons.

MS has been active helping out with many things on Wikipedia. For merely one example, he helped with the divergent structure of our category system back when it was mostly a gaggle of threads/chains. Doing many mass group nominations to help bring some sense of consistency of naming and structure in categories.

He is so humble, too often thinking that what he does is not as important as what others' do.

And is consistently and constantly a "go to" person for other editors.

As a "help out" person, I think we could all look to him for example.

Why is this user awesome?

Yes, I realise that this nomination may cause some fireworks. However, for all the faults that are ascribed to him by some, Malleus Fatuorum has been and remains a prolific and knowledgeable contributor whose work here spans a huge range of our content and is rarely ill-informed. His work in fettling FAs and GAs must surely rank with the best and his accommodation and encouragement of new users - including the oft-maligned student programs - is self-evident on his (voluminous) talk page. His copyediting is absolutely outstanding, as is his continued presence and work to the Greater Good, despite occasional doubts and in the face of what is fundamentally little more than a systemic culture clash. No one, not even his detractors, can deny that this man has been a substantial asset to the real purpose of Wikipedia, which is the building of an encyclopaedia that is accessible to all. Would he wear a t-shirt? Well, I'm not so sure that it would be his style - but he deserves one even if he just frames the thing. (And I assume that, being US-centric, there will be a suitable size. Joke.) I rather suspect that this may be one of those issues where the WMF has to intervene and make a decision because I can hears the howls of protest from the regular Us vs. MF camps already. If this is how it has to be then it is how it has to be. I do know that Malleus was overcome with emotion when he attended a Wikimeet early on this year and realised, as previously he had not, that he was accepted by those whom he met for what he was: a highly productive Wikipedian of enormous integrity who has a genuine desire to make this project as good as it can be. For those who disagree with his methods, let's just admit that there is method, based on much consideration of the greater good, in what they consider to be his madness. - Sitush (talk) 01:09, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Support

*There are times when I think blocking Malleus and throwing away the key would be a good idea. But then I come to the realization that Malleus, as this nomination said, truly does strive to improve the encyclopedia and do what he thinks his best. I don't always agree with his methods, but he is one of the most resilient Wikipedians on the project, and for that, he deserves a shirt. Go Phightins! 01:54, 16 November 2012 (UTC) This tells me there's no reason to waste a t-shirt for this purpose. I don't dispute that Malleus is dedicated and resilient, but there's no reason to give him a t-shirt solely so he can burn it. Go Phightins! 02:25, 16 November 2012 (UTC) Changed my mind again. Give him the t-shirt. Go Phightins! 17:40, 21 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Why is this user awesome?

For his "tough, but fair" approach to substandard articles in AfC, AfD, and elsewhere. He is not easily fooled by unreliable sources or PR-speak, but if an article has potential, he often gives detailed advice that, if implemented, will almost always result in an article of acceptable quality.

Many people will not have met this user, but any admin who works the speedy-deletion queue will know that, day after day, Mean as custard painstakingly filters the sludge that comes through the New Pages pipe and tags the spam for deletion. From the "cheap Louis Vuitton handbag" spambots to the "we have always out performed expectations and brought happiness to everyone" builders, the "top-notch public relations firm" that "specializes in diverse innovative management and marketing solutions" and the providers of "high quality gentle dental care in warm, friendly environment", Mean as custard has got their number. This is the sort of unglamorous behind-the-scenes work that gets little recognition but is essential to Wikipedia's survival.

By deleting List of pedophiles, Coren took decisive "ignore all rules" action to quickly address what was sure to become a BLP nightmare and troll magnet. Coren's deletion prevented what might have been a divisive and drawn-out deletion discussion. Coren's acknowledgement of the effects that Wikipedia articles and lists can have on BLP subjects deserves recognition.

Support

I would like to add a proviso to this nomiation - in the event that Dr. Blofeld returns from "retirement" and successfully manages to have the article restored through a deletion review, Coren must give the shirt to Blofeld. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 17:12, 17 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No need for this proviso. Dr B has his own nomination below. And Dream Focus, who has challenged this deletion in a few places, also has a nomination. For fighting the uphill battle for a constructive approach at building the sum of all human knowledge. Dream Focus recognizes that problems are solved by improvement, not by destruction. He is one of the few working and arguing to rescue the work of other editors at WP:ARS and WP:AFD. Why is this user awesome?

Dr. Blofeld has always been a hard-working contributor to the encyclopedia, who I know will be back soon. He has made 443,176 edits since 14 June 2006, and is an outstanding content contributor. He has 976 DYKs— more than any other editor. With a mountain of GAs (74), along with a load of FAs, I can't see anything wrong with this user. Blofeld has made 91997 articles, almost triple the amount of any other non-bot editor, and more than any account.

Nominated by: Tito Dutta (talk) 03:35, 20 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Why is this user awesome?

He is a Ukrainian Wikipedia admin. I do not know Ukrainian language or can not even read its alphabet. I have talked with him few times (generally requesting articles in Wikipedia Ukrainian). Firstly, I requested in a Ukrainian admin's talk page, did not get any reply. From there Antanana picked the request and helped me to get that article in Ukrainian Wikipedia. He is a perfectionist by nature. I asked to create an article on Nagarik, he told he wants to watch the film before writing on it. A Ukrainian is watching a Bengali film just to write a requested article, I could not believe that. I have seen (though I can not understand anything in his talk page) he is very helpful, polite to all users.
Add: Antanana is "she", Sorry for the confusion! I did not know! Details --Tito Dutta (talk) 10:33, 20 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

(I was only nominating those who had usernames which appeared to be their names (since the shirts have to be sent to "Real Life People" : )

But now that he's here...

There simply isn't enough space on this page to describe all the great good that User:Hiding has done to contribute to the project.

He started or significantly contributed to many of the policies that we all very much take for granted as "solid" policy.

He is a guiding force in the comics project, and was the main admin helping out there before many of the rest of us were admins. And on that subject, it's at the very least partly due to his guidance that many admins are admins. (He helped me, and subsequently co-nominated me, for instance.)

He is a prolific content contributor, and is who I liked to go to when I have a referencing question.

And even with all of this, he is good natured and a pleasure to collaborate with.

For these and many many other reasons, I think that Hiding is an incredibly awesome Wikipedian : ) - jc37 22:11, 20 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I could write about his anti-vandal work, or his admin work or his crat work. But seriously, just for the insane amount of work he puts in at the understaffed Wikipedia:Featured List process as its director, not to mention unofficial copyeditor-in-chief, helper extraordinaire and general dogsbody, he deserves this. --Dweller (talk) 15:46, 21 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Anna has been around since 2008 with 55K+ edits; 30K+ to the mainstream. She is a tireless contributor and is always ready to help out. She has created 1300+ articles and has improved numerous articles. According to me, Anna is a valuable asset to the community and certainly deserves recognition for all the hard work that she has been doing around. Qwyrxian

Nominated by: Sitush (talk) 11:42, 23 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Why is this user awesome?

More easily referred to a "Q", Qwyrxian is not afraid to get involved in awkward disputes relating to a wide range of articles, from a certain problematic group of islands through to weird naming issues for schools in Sri Lanka and on to (top marks from me!) numerous caste-related articles. They are around almost daily, they pay attention to what others say in often heated situations, and their responses are invariably both considered and polite. Much of their work is in response to new contributors who are trying to run before they can walk and who often seem not to have English as their first language: Q's approach generally works pretty well. - Sitush (talk) 11:42, 23 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

On a side note the community member who submitted the nomination was concerned that it would not be seen as important because they had less then 100 edits. I'm making this comment here because I wanted to point out, if the user or others are watching, that if anything that may make it more important. Users who are awesome for new users are incredibly valued. Writers, mentors, trainers, copyeditors and more, I'd love to see nominations from all corners of the wiki. Ori spends his time making the software that powers Wikipedia a better editing environment. He's also part of the E3 team that is working to improve Wikipedia, and then deals with the ensuing complaints. Most recently he pushed forward the issue of dropping the "my" prefix from the personal tools.

He's also extremely helpful to any user who might have questions and suggestions, and will go the extra distance to see them through the end of the process.

  2. You know what, DQ works his tail off in ways that most people don't realize. Running CU doesn't make contrib entries, so it gets overlooked but I know from experience that ever since he received the CU bit, he had to hit the ground running, at full speed, and he has done it with style. At SPI, he has been really thoughtful in explaining why he can't run a CU, patient in working with clerks and has stepped up to the plate to help keep the place from being overrun with socks. I would agree that a t-shirt has been well earned. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 23:18, 29 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Besides being a sysop, oversighter, and checkuser, Ponyo has essentially taken on the highest load of work on the Unblock ticket request system. She keeps the new requests cleared so users have a prompt response from an administrator and has closed 1008 tickets at the time of this posting which means among a list of 79 registered administrators, she alone has pulled 1/5th of the total workflow since the system launched in March 2011. She is also a member of OTRS and I imagine she has done as much work there. Between OTRS and UTRS, Ponyo constantly deals with disgruntled folks and is the face of Wikipedia and our administrators to them. She definitely deserves at least a t-shirt.

Why is this user awesome?

BECAUSE HE IS.

But seriously, Matma Rex has been a wonderful force behind the scenes with MediaWiki, working a volunteer to improve general interface things and in particular move to clean up involved code, as well as helping immensely toward acclimating potential new contributors to the MediaWiki codebase - I know I probably would have gotten fed up and left had it not been for him, and he is always ready to help in #mediawiki with even the most basic questions.

He is also, it would seem, one of plwp's administrators who is happy to work behind the scenes on anything technical, be it abusefilter or debugging for the one person still using windows 98 and IE6 or whatever it was, and also explaining new changes and keeping the local populace from panicking - something that is always needed regardless of the project.

I wish I could say more, but this is all I've seen of him, though it has all been lovely.
