The following are lists of notable people who intentionally killed themselves. Suicides committed under duress are included. Deaths by accident or misadventure are excluded. Individuals who might or might not have died by their own hand, or whose intention to die is in dispute, but who are widely believed to have deliberately killed themselves, may be listed under "possible suicides".

Possible suicides

Jean Seberg
The Death of Socrates
  • Clodius Albinus (197), Roman emperor, killed himself after a defeat in battle (possibly executed by Septimius Severus)[583]
  • Salvador Allende (1973), president of Chile, gunshot.[584][585][586][587][588]
  • Alexis Arguello (2009), Nicaraguan boxer and politician, gunshot to the heart. Some sources believe he was murdered.
  • Le Corbusier (1965), one of the pioneers of modern architecture, went for a swim against his doctor's orders. There is some debate whether his death was a suicide.[589]
  • Hannibal (183–181 BC),[590] Carthaginian military commander and tactician, possibly poison[591][592]
  • Jules Lequier (1862), French philosopher, probably swam voluntarily out into the ocean[593]
  • Primo Levi (1987), Italian Jewish chemist, writer and Holocaust survivor, fall from his third-story apartment. It is uncertain whether it was suicide or an accident.[594]
  • Meriwether Lewis (1809), U.S. explorer and partner of William Clark, gunshot; there is some debate as to whether his death was a suicide[595]
  • Freddie Prinze (1977), American actor and comedian, gunshot. while under the influence of methaqualone and alcohol. Initially ruled suicide but later determined accidental.[596][597]
  • Jean Seberg (1979), American actress, barbiturate overdose, probably foul play[598][599]
  • Elliott Smith (2003), American singer, songwriter and musician, stab wounds to the chest. While Smith's death was originally reported as a suicide, the official autopsy report released in December 2003 left open the question of homicide.[600][601]
  • Socrates (399 BC), Classical Greek Athenian philosopher, credited as one of the founders of Western philosophy, drank poison, probably hemlock.[602][603][604][605] Because Socrates was forced to poison himself to death as his sentence following his conviction for impiety and corrupting the minds of the youth of Athens, the question of whether this constitutes a genuine suicide is a subject of debate.[606]
  • Luigi Tenco (1967), Italian singer and songwriter, gunshot to the head.[607]
  • Alan Turing (1954), English mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst and computer scientist, eating an apple laced with cyanide.[608] While the inquest ruled the death a suicide, BBC News disputes this.[609]

  582. ^ "Died". Time. March 2, 1942. Retrieved 2010-06-30. Died. Stefan Zweig, 60, Austrian-born novelist, biographer, essayist (Amok, Adepts in Self-Portraiture, Marie Antoinette), and his wife, Elizabeth; by poison; in Petropolis, Brazil. Born into a wealthy Jewish family in Vienna, Zweig turned from casual globe-trotting to literature after World War I, wrote prolifically, smoothly, successfully in many forms. His books banned by the Nazis, he fled to Britain in 1938 with the arrival of German troops, became a British subject in 1940, moved to the U.S. the same year, to Brazil the next. He was never outspoken against Naziism, believed artists and writers should be independent of politics. Friends in Brazil said he left a suicide note explaining that he was old, a man without a country, too weary to begin a new life. His last book: Brazil: Land of the Future.
