Well, FAC is so slow, it's anyone's guess really. Could fall down to a moment of bad timing or a day when the co-ords aren't promoting, and it's game over. That's probably something that needs to be addressed next year really, especially as we saw this year Gog's last second (alright, last-half-hour) promotion could have completely over-turned things. Exactly that happened last year (or I'd have won two years running now). But, that is part of the game. I knew I needed to time my nominations to get the four in the two months (which means nomming around 20 days into the first month of the previous round). FA and DYK are the only two parts of the cup that work like this though, you can just write 100 GAs and nom them all for one round, and so long as you generate enough interest, you'd score 3,500 points. During this period, any uninvolved administrator may re-impose the topic ban as an arbitration enforcement action, subject to appeal only to the Arbitration Committee. Greetings,

Lot many events do take place on International Women's Day, amongst them, since 2018 Pakistan women take out Aurat March and is leading to substantial social discourse in Pakistan, with substantial media coverage.

Wikipedia main page has Wikipedia:In the news section, would there be any scope to nominate Aurat March and/or International Women's Day for that section?

So would this be a better table style for sorting and accessing issues? I had to jerry-rig the heck out of it, so it's not pretty, but I've been able to produce something that sorts on the appropriate columns has both color, a key for the color, and text for those who color doesn't help; as well as working links to the commons cat and NRHP refnumbers. Also pinging ChrisTheDude, as I want to make sure this format is actually an improvement before I go to the trouble of converting the existing table in the article to this sort of thing. FL process chaos

Hello, TNR. I wanted to stop by and mention something of which I'm aware relating to FL, although I don't know whether it will be at all interesting to you. I don't know whether I'm reporting a problem or just a condition, as I don't know the mechanics of the FL/FAC process (I haven't been active there in yonks).

It's simply this: a user did some work on a list in the hopes of getting it to FL on his 3rd try (2nd nom withdrawn a few hours ago). While he was doing that, he manually created a nom page, "finished" his work, then went to the list's Talk page and added {{Featured list candidates}}, but did not click on initiate the nomination. He then (rather cleverly) doctored the FL page to manually add his list to the page for a 3rd nom review.

I'm not trying to get the guy in trouble as he's already been brought to AN/I (and now he's looking for a mentor), but I'm unsure what mechanisms, if any, get broken when somebody half-follows the directions like this. The Most Comfortable Chair the approach being heavily emphasised at the moment is to put any prospective nominations for FAC through a peer review. I haven't been there in a while, but I'm led to believe it's back up and effective again after quite some time in the doldrums. Vaticidalprophet that's a really interesting read! My opinion, right now I'd take it to WP:GAN with a view for FAC ultimately. If you removed "List of" and expanded the introduction then I don't see why it wouldn't make FAC. But then FAC's a fire dumpster at the moment so who knows, you could nominate it there eventually and be told just the opposite... Regarding the "the" in band names, please educate me (and sorry, I have no time tor the whole thing): I understand "... that the Beatles released ...", when there's a "the" in the sentence, and we don't want "... that the The Beatles released ...". However, if there is no "the" in sight, why not capital as part of their name? I won't say "user the Rambling Man taught me something". (talk page stalker) I do wonder if Gerda might be on to something here. Perhaps capitalisation should depend on whether it makes lexical sense to put "the" at that point in the sentence. So while it might be fine to say "I went for a walk in the countryside with the Rambling Man", it looks odd to write "Wikipedian the Rambling Man said that the moon is made of cheese". But rightly or wrongly, our MOS doesn't make any such distinction. The only thing it allows is if "The" is rendered in a weird way, such as in "Snoop Dogg collaborated frequently with labelmates Tha Dogg Pound". Purely selfishly, I'd like to nominate it for the fourth or fifth round of the Cup, but if that isn't possible, that's no big deal. I've got Davis' autobiography on order, so I think that would be the big one to include a bit more, so if we could cleanup the article, and get everything as good as possible from online sourcing, that would be ideal. There have been numerous edits by Jaredscribe recently and while I was tracking down a problem edit, I made two discoveries. One is that this editor made the problem edit. The other is that the editor has been blocked in the past, so it's possible someone needs to look at the person's edits to make sure they're all right. I wouldn't know myself, and my fixes to the problem edits I did see may be all right or they may not. Dashes

I see from your edit here that my attempt to add an en dash to the POTD caption was unsuccessful. This page shows usage of dashes, hyphens, en dashes and em dashes, but I don't know how to find each of them on my keyboard. When I give a page range in a citation, I use the first symbol that appears at the foot of my edit screen (at the side of a drop-down menu that defaults to "insert"). I thought that was an en dash, but it seems not. I deduce that the symbol used in a page range is different from the one used in a date range. Can you help? I would be bold and add a few of them to the eligible section of each relevant OTD page. There are all-too-often repeats in there (the talkpage tells you when they last featured at OTD) so I'd replace the ones which appeared last year first or those which have had frequent visits. Another FL noob question

Thank you for your help (and kind compliments) last time! I'm still working on that draft, if (very) slowly, but I've found myself with an unrelated question about the scope of FLs brought on by working towards an unrelated featured/good topic idea. How few items is it possible to have in an FL before it becomes too short to pass? I know this is a little 'how long is a piece of string', but the vast majority of FLs I can find are full of items. I'm hoping to make a featured topic on a group of related genetic disorders, for which a primary article would be better presented as a list than a traditional prose article, but its scope would be quite limited. There are ten disorders in the group with articles, and you could maybe make them for two more, but they'd be very hard to write for rarity reasons (less than ten diagnosed cases for either). Can you write an FL with 10-12 items? Are there any good examples of limited-scope FLs to study here? Vaticidalprophet 11:15, 10 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sakharov Prize

@The Rambling Man: Greetings! About three days ago, I translated Sakharov Prize to Swedish. I have done some improvements, fixed image layout, and included information about the pandemic (Sacharovpriset [sv] click on "sv"; you could perhaps click on a "translate the page" thing at the top of your browser). Upon nominating it for featured list (Wikipedia:Artikelnomineringar#Utmärkt lista [sv] click on "sv"), I got caught in multiple nets thrown from a few reviewers.

For instance: one column of the table shows the nationalities of the laureates, however, a country such as East Turkestan is not a real country; shouldn't his nationality be switched with China? The description already says that he is Uyghur and from the East Turkestan area. Same thing with flags: flags such as the Bosnian one shows how it appeared during the nomination, and not when he was born there. Kosovo is mentioned twice in the list but it was not a country when he was born (not his real nationality) and was not even a country during the awarding ceremony; shouldn't it be switched with Serbia? One could perhaps keep the note about Kosovo claiming independence.
Another very peculiar thing is that an admin doubted whether the Sakharov Prize should even be a list, and said that it has the potential of being a new article by itself. I personally disagree since it is about the laureates and comprehensiveness has been, in my mind, fully achieved. However, I am not entirely sure what I should do and thought of contacting someone experienced with WP:FL and someone who actually nominated that list for FL.

Hi. Obviously "nationality" in this case is quite a sensitive subject. If the sources themselves don't mention the nationality, perhaps it's better to remove it altogether. Same goes for the flags. As for list vs article, well maybe Swedish Wikipedia has different standards. You could, if you found sufficient material, break it into a Sakharov Prize and List of Sakharov Prize winners pairing, but unless someone can convince me there's loads more that would make a standalone prize article, I don't see the problem at all. No problem. With respect to images, my approach is: if there are enough free images (e.g. >50%) then add them as a column in the table. NFCC for fair use is incomplete

Hello, I've completed the NFCC fields in the two files that you marked that appeared in recent DYKs (The Return of Wayne Douglas and Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite). Regarding your entry on the log (of at least one of them) ""all criteria should have justification, "n.a." is not a suitable justification", I wanted to comment that "n.a" appears in the file descriptions per default when an user does not complete said fields on the upload form. The reason I personally never filled them is because they are actually not marked as mandatory. Now, if they really are mandatory fields, can it be requested somewhere that they be marked as such for the upload form? Well the uploader is still responsible for all the fields to be correctly filled in. Even an "n.a." needs to be justified as to why that criterion of NFCC doesn't apply to a particular upload. I get it, and I did complete those fields upon request. But my point is that if the wizard itself would request them, we would not have this kind of issue. If uploaders are not prompted to fill it right away (as with the source, the reason why the use of the file will be minimal, etc.), it leads one directly to think that there are no missing fields and it is good to go. Hey, it looks good on a first glance. I'll take a more thorough look in due course. One thing that's happened at FAC lately is a perverse requirement for articles to be completely comprehendible to a seven-year-old American child without having to click on any links. Followup on my statement regarding the Commonwealth

I don't know if I made it clear to you, and I wasn't going to say anything, but given that you memorialized a quote that was taken out of context on the top of your talk page, I felt like I had to respond. Since you live in the United Kingdom, I'm certain you understand the difference between the Commonwealth Realms and the Commonwealth as a whole -- but when I said that more people live in the Commonwealth than in the United States, I specifically was referring to those countries who's head of state is the Queen of England. Yes, India (the bulk of the population that lives in the Commonwealth) is a member, but India is a Republic and its head of state is not the Queen.

This is just an academic argument anyway, but I wanted to correct the record. I also wanted to apologize for being a jerk -- I still think that modern nations retaining their monarchies instead of becoming a republic is stupid (just as I know that you believe our gun laws are stupid... and just as we both believe that a liberal democracy retaining the death penalty is ridiculous), but there was no reason for me to be a dick about it -- I am sorry. -- Rockstone^{[Send me a message!]} 00:54, 29 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Wretchskull, sorry it's taken a week or so to get back to you. I don't see why fundamentally it shouldn't be capable of becoming an FL. We tend to look for around ten items as the minimum so this ticks that box. I'd also look for more background information as this is the main article on the award. The second round of the 2021 WikiCup has now finished; it was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 61 points to advance to Round 3. There were some impressive efforts in the round, with the top eight contestants all scoring more than 400 points. Under my picture on my User Page are links to videos telling how I order ILL books to my local library that I use for research for developing articles. Also there are links to local newspaper articles on me about my Wikipedia activities. The first one was a front page story done in 2010. Presently I use 3 PCs at the same time for editing and creating articles. In the 14 years that I have been creating articles it turns out 97% have become Did You Know articles = 500 DYKs. It's those articles I am upgrading and making Good Articles. BTW - I have 22 other GANs in the queue and plan on adding others. In the past I created 500 Did You Know articles. What I do is upgrade those and then submit GAN. An example of that is my most recent upgrade and GAN on Harlan Page Davidson. I developed a potential GAN list and then work off that for my upgrades and GANs. That way I can keep track when I submitted an article for GAN and which ones are next for upgrading to a GAN. This way then I have a two year project of making Good Articles. Hi TRM, hope you're doing well. Do you think that Lewis Hamilton reaching the 100 pole position milestones would pass ITN criteria? He is the first driver in history to reach this milestone. I have next-to-no experience with ITN (except posting obviously supported RDs/blurbs) so I don't entirely understand the criteria. I understand it requires relevancy and posts from highly reliable sources, so do you think The Guardian and the BBC would suffice? Hi TRM, while I've been reviewing your various FA Cup articles I got inspired to work on my own Final-related article. It's currently in draftspace and I've got a few questions before I move it, namely about sourcing.

When doing play-by-play reporting, like how the FA Cup articles mention "x did y at minute z", do I need to find a source that did that for me or is it fine to cite the game itself and point out the most important aspects myself? I understand this could be construed as original research, but if I put it alongside a reliable source and only discussed what they discussed, would this work?
I have used videos of matches and made neutral and factual observations based on those, and while it was questioned, it wasn't opposed. It's an FA: 1997 Football League First Division play-off Final. But I pretty much always try to use those live update sources too, and while even those have been queried for reliability, I think we've set enough of a precedent to go with them. Similarly, basic statistics about the matches themselves are hard to come by on third-party editorial websites, but there are independent sites like this, for instance, that have basically everything the article would need because it is in effect an end-of-game report. These sites don't exactly scream RS (like the BBC), but are used by various people in the industry. Would it be better to cite the match itself, this independent website, or exclude any information that can't be attributed to a third-party journalistic RS, including basic statistics?
If you can demonstrate that those sites are used by other people and other RS then you have a very good argument to use them yourself. If not, I think observing the statistics and recording them from the event recording would possibly be okay as long as it's simple enough and requires no real interpretative skill. Help request

Hey TRM, I didn't know who else to go to and you're one of the nicest editors so I thought maybe you can help me. On May 29th I made a few edits to the 1991 page after seeing Deb's reply to my old take page post on that page. (Edit 1, Edit 2, Edit 3, Edit 4). In the 2nd edit, I re-added unsourced content that was originally part of the page that I moved to the talk page to get consensus on inclusion (I realise now that this was a mistake but I did it with good intent). Elizium23 did a rollback edit that undid this edit plus my two other, perfectly fine intermediate edits on May 29. I then today, after seeing this, undid Elizium23's edit with the intent of manually reverting my own bad edit while keeping the good intermediate edits. About two minutes, and only two minutes, after I reverted Elizium23's edit, they reverted my revert. About one minute after this revert they put an orange warning template on my talk page even though I have messages saying on the top of my talk page that I find warning templates disrespectful. 4 minutes after their revert of my edit, I undid the revert again this time saying that I was going to manually self-revert my bad edit, while telling them to be more patient and remember WP:AGF. Only 1 minute after this edit, in which I tell them my intent, they put a red warning template on my talk page. I finally self-revert my edit 3 minutes about after I reverted my bad edit. A few minutes after that I replied on my talk page telling them my concerns. The rest of the conversation is on my talk page under the most recent post. I wanted to try to get rid of the disagreement so I asked them whether they knew the difference between rollbacks and reverts. They didn't answer, so I asked them again after which they accused me of "patronizing [them] and misrepresenting events". I apologized, told them my intent, and asked them again. They haven't responded and have been doing edits at other pages since then. I usually wouldn't ask for help for things like this but I'm really worried that they might think it's fine to use rollback for everything, which might cause a lot of good, valuable edits to be lost like in my case. I'm not sure what to do and I'm not good at citing wikipedia rules so I thought maybe you can give me advice on how to respond to this. Hi Dan. I'm a little busy at the moment and haven't had time to do even my basic "daily" stuff. At a first glance, though, it seems like the user in question is completely misunderstanding their responsibility when using tools. It's simply unacceptable to say things like "take it up with the author of the software", if someone uses a tool, they are 100% responsible for what that tool does. It strikes me that the user in question has realised they are in the wrong and have clammed up rather than trying to resolve the misunderstanding which is disappointing for sure, but I guess not much can be done. I will take a longer look later, but if it was me right now, I'd just axe their petty warning from my talkpage and move on: I think you've used up enough good faith on the situation. The author is still making minor edits to the article, but hasn't responded on the review page in a while and seems to be resisting my suggestions. Am I being too hard-nosed here? Should I just give the author more time to work at their own pace? There's a few minor copyedits I could make on my own to fix some sentence structure problems, but I think the lead needs major reworking to get it to the point where it summarizes the main body and fixing that up seems outside the scope of what a reviewer should do. I'm just cleaning up Caroline Flack's article - there's quite a bit of unverified and questionably sourced stuff in it - and I'm just wondering if WP:BLP still applies to the article? Possible alternative method

Hello TRM. I am sorry (though not surprised) your conversation on BHG's talk page got shut down. That editor, in my experience, does not know how to take into account the work that others have to do. I thought I would leave you a link to this thread Wikipedia talk:ReFill#Another enhancement request where I mention just replacing the inline tempates with regular bare url template at the top of the an article. I suspect you know the inline template (along with being a pain to find) does not allow immediate access to refill the way the regular template does. Thanks for your work here at the 'pedia. Hi, I was amazed to see there is no category along these lines - only Category:Cultural depictions of association football players and Category:Association football books that I could see. Refill does remove the inline template if it fixes the ref but leaves it if it is unable to. It is rich for her to talk about aggressiveness in other editors. I'm inclined to leave it Aussie Article Writer. Having worked fixing bare urls for several years I can tell you that one big template at the top of the article is better than several (or even one) inline one. Its big advantage is that you can start refill by clicking on the word refill in the template. With the inline ones you have to copy/paste the title of the article into a separate page. Another problem with the inline ones is any that don't get fixed by refill have to have the inline tag removed before you can use other tools like reflinks. The fact that she is no longer meatboting hundreds of articles is the biggest help to come out of other editors pointing out her negligence. Her refusal to cooperate with the editors who are doing the actual work of fixing bare urls is truly a pain. MarnetteD|Talk 23:05, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I think we should draw a line under this now. I was unaware of BHG's attempts to somehow become the top editor until several people advised me of it, when I noted her edit sprees which included these multiple errors, it was purely down to the fact I couldn't solve them easily because of her edits and it was so much more difficult to go and undo the crap she'd created and re-fix it all with ReFill than if she'd just left it all alone. I'm glad she's come to the right conclusion that her edits weren't always helpful, and despite the oblique NPA, I hope she just starts to do the right thing going forward. Adding a "comment" and then immediately collapsing the discussion is disgraceful behaviour, but hey, that's where we are now. Amakuru Hey, I think given the glacial pace at FAC, it can be safely co-nominated now and that will give me enough time to extract what's remaining to be added from the paper tome I have on my desk before we get into solid reviews. As it was firmly in the era of online match reports, there's not a huge amount, but there are several nice preview/post-match quotes from prominent individuals as a minimum that can go in there. Thinking about things

As this goes back years, dunno if the context will be understood (much less by others), so (ugh) <preface> while in the past you and I may not have necessarily always agreed and in some cases certain editorial choices may well have deserved action</preface> - I just thought I would mention that during recent days I've been thinking about you (and others) and the (at times) unconscionable way you (and others) have been treated.

We as a community really really need to do better at how we phrase/implement/enforce sanctions. There's a real person behind that anonymous username.

WikiCup 2021 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished with over 500 points being required to qualify for the final round. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants, The Rambling Man and Epicgenius, each scoring over 3000 points, and six contestants scoring over 1000. All but one of the finalists achieved one or more FAs during the round, the exception being Bloom6132 who demonstrated that 61 "in the news" items produces an impressive number of points. Other contestants who made it to the final are Gog the Mild, Lee Vilenski, BennyOnTheLoose, Amakuru and Hog Farm. However, all their points are now swept away and everyone starts afresh in the final round.

Round 4 saw the achievement of 18 featured articles and 157 good articles. Bilorv scored for a 25-article good topic on Black Mirror but narrowly missed out on qualifying for the final round. There was enthusiasm for FARs, with 89 being performed, and there were 63 GARs and around 100 DYKs during the round. As we start round 5, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it to the final round; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For other contestants, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

Bumbubookworm hey, no I haven't but I'm in the final round of the WikiCup and due to some "unfortunate" timings of promotions at FAC, I literally started the round nearly 1,000 points down, so I've been focussed on trying to cut that deficit. Cleaning up is a pain....

Am not as interested in snakes as much as other critters...but snake articles are full of hyperbole and are often a bit of a mess (and really important from a public health perspective to get right). Mainly because of this person, who wrote effusively, misused sources, browbeat other editors. Also enlightening trying to clean up...as is much harder than writing from scratch in some ways. 2012 Summer Olympics medal table conflict

Hi there,

There seems to be a conflict regarding how to report medals that have yet to be reallocated regarding the 2012 Summer Olympics medal table. Nitobus thinks the cases of yet to be redistributed medals should be listed, but 215XBux says this would violate WP:Crystal, initially. You can read the discussion here. So, how can this possible conflict be resolved?

Maybe mention how many of the 2011 winners were in the City lineup.
