Wikipedia:HighBeam/Prior applications

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Dry Martini (talk | contribs) at 16:43, 2 April 2012 (→‎Applications: +me). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Wikipedia:Highbeam/Nav This page is designed to manage the applications process for editors who want access to a free, full-access, 1-year HighBeam Research account. HighBeam has indicated that they will defer to the community's judgment about which editors will qualify for a free account. Because they do not have a strict limit on the number of free accounts they are willing to give us (they've initially authorized 1000), there is unlikely to be a problem of too many editors trying to get too few accounts. The criteria and an explanation of the application process are listed below.

Requirements
  • You do not have free online access to HighBeam through your local library or university
  • You have your Wikipedia email enabled
  • You have an account that is a minimum of 1 year old
  • You have a minimum of 1000 edits to the encyclopedia
  • Ideally, you are active in content generation, research, and verification work.
Process
  • Promotion of the application process will begin on March 13, 2012
  • The free accounts will be widely advertised on Wikipedia community pages, content portals, wikiprojects, mailing lists, and available media (Signpost, Wikimedia Blog)
  • Applications will officially open on Monday April 2, 2012 at 10am Eastern Standard Time (EST) and remain open until Monday April 9 at 12pm EST.
  • Applications will not be given on a first-come first serve basis; in the unlikely event that there are more eligible editors than accounts, they will be assigned randomly
  • Account access codes will be emailed to all participants by Monday April 16 at 12pm EST
Expectations for use
  • All editors are encouraged to apply where they have a need for background reading, research, verification, or content writing
  • Editors should try out and use the HighBeam account during their free access period
  • Editors should always provide original citation information, in addition to linking a HighBeam article, per WP:V and WP:SAYWHEREYOUGOTIT
  • Editors should not provide bare links to non-free HighBeam pages
  • Editors should note "(subscription required)" in the citation, where appropriate
  • Your application suggests you've read this and will give it a fair shot :)

Example application

  1. [[User:Name]]. Active Wikimedia project(s). History of content, research, or verification work. Intentions for future research.
  2. User:Ocaasi. English Wikipedia. I write biographies about alternative medicine practitioners and Middle Eastern political activists. I intend to continue this work, specifically writing about Gabriel Cousens and the Egyptian presidential election, 2012. Ocaasi t | c 21:37, 13 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Applications

Feel free to add your name below, but no applications will be considered until Monday, April 2, 2012 at 10am Eastern Standard Time (EST). If there is a shortage, applications will be given on a random basis to all who meet the basic qualifications. Please tell your wiki-friends, WikiProjects, and other fora you frequent about this opportunity.

  86. Simon Burchell: Been around since 2006, but not really active until 2008, with 29,000 edits. 4 FAs and a dozen or so GAs. I also sporadically spend time on the Spanish wikipedia. I'm constantly frustrated by paywalls, and any extra resource would be a great help. I'm particularly active in WikiProjects Mesoamerica and Guatemala with the addition of new material. I do a lot of article assessment on WikiProject Mythology, I also write up the odd British archaeological site. Simon Burchell (talk) 23:59, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I do a lot of maintenance work, but I find paid databases to be extremely useful when I do content work. I don't have access to HighBeam through my uni, so it would be quite nice! I don't work in any specific area, but I have two GAs, and am working on making one a FA. GorillaWarfare (talk) 02:37, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Would make use of newspaper archives mainly for the review history of film and television topics, though use of such a tool would probably light a fire under my ass to research more "important" topics as well. 102. Orlady. American; editor in the English Wikipedia since 2004; active since 2006; currently administrator; well over 60,000 total edits. Most of my work is in creation and improvement of content in a diverse variety of topical areas, mostly related to current topics or the last couple of centuries -- roughly corresponding to the period covered by HighBeam archives. I don't have access to any university libraries and my access to paywall-protected Internet content is rather limited, but I am skilled at locating information on the free Internet. I have found archived articles from newspapers and magazines published in the last two centuries to be valuable resources for research, particularly in the subject areas of history, politics, biography, and business. Access to HighBeam resources would definitely increase the stature of the sources I use, as I would have less need to rely on articles from small-city local newspapers that happen to have been archived at Google Books. --Orlady (talk) 05:36, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I do regular content creation, particularly fixing unreferenced biographies (although there's less of that to do now) and preparing articles for WP:ITN, which can include adding a lot of background and fixing general problems as well as updating the news-y bit. On my to do list at the moment is improving some articles to do with linguistics and the Sex Pistols (as two separate topics, if you were wondering). FormerIP (talk) 15:56, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Editor since July 2, 2008, 8,000+ edits, by my own count I've created 100 pages and I also do a lot of page expansions (including attempting to save articles at AfD). I'm extremely eclectic, except that I am not qualified to do much that's scientific/technical. I don't have access to any online archives through my local library and have no academic library affiliation, so I could really use help seeing newspaper articles. While searching for reliable sources to improve articles in these domains using search engines, I have come across HighBeam several times. An account would be very helpful to me in such cases. Mwarf (talk) 18:26, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  239. User:Delfort. +40.000 edits on it.wikipedia since 2006. HighBeam Research would very be useful to my work on verification and referencing biographies of sports people, historical sports events and history of sports. --Delfort (talk) 17:07, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  240. User:France3470. English Wikipedia. Editor since 2007; highly active since 2010. Have made 10,00+ edits primarily to mainspace; contributed 1 GA, and 5 DYKs as well as created 40+ others. I frequently expand and add citations to articles and can see HighBeam being very useful for this.France3470 (talk) 17:19, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  241. User:Meowy. English Wikipedia, for 6 years (since April 2006) and with over 7300 edits: 40% being content generation and 40% being content discussion. The majority of these were on articles related to the Near East and Caucasus regions. I would be especially interested in using HighBeam to access specialist journal content related to the art, architecture and history of the Near East / Middle East / Caucasus, in particular the medieval period. This would be used for both content writing and verification. Meowy 20:22, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  242. User:Wikisilki. Spanish Wikipedia. Around 30 000 edits since July 2008. I use to create or expand articles or biographies on art, literature and history issues, do sometimes reviews of GA and FA. I also have a Credo account. Thanks! wikisilki 01:02, 28 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  243. User:Kafka Liz. Registered user since 2007; over 8,000 edits in that time, with a focus on visual arts and history. 4 FAs to date, and could really use better access to sources. Kafka Liz (talk) 01:57, 28 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  244. Christian Stroppel German Wikipedia. Registerd since Jul 2007; 1,261 edits; 44.01% being content generation an 13.80% being content discussion. I studied psychology and want to read original studies.--Christian Stroppel (talk) 08:43, 28 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  246. User:Josh Parris. Active on en, increasingly active on simple. 70 en articles created, and I'm finding myself doing a lot of citation work recently. Planning on doing a lot more citations in BLPs I've created or become entangled with. Josh Parris 11:10, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  247. User:Coemgenus, active on English Wikipedia with about 26,000 edits in 7 years, including 10 FAs and 2 FLs. I mostly work in history and biography. --Coemgenus (talk) 11:57, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  248. User:Livitup Over 5k edits since 2005. I enjoy expanding stubs and wiki-gnoming, including {{refimprov}}ing, when possible. Very active with CSD, PROD, and AfD, where having access to high-quality sources would be a real benefit in getting things right. LivitEh?/What? 05:19, 30 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  249. User:AndyTheGrump Eclectic editor on e.Wikipedia. 12,000+ edits, active since August 2010. I've often found myself wishing for a facility like this, and expect to make good use of it verifying sources, improving articles, and (when I finally think of a subject that hasn't already been written about) maybe even writing new ones. AndyTheGrump (talk) 21:41, 30 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  250. User:Neatnik. 1,000+ edits on frwiki, 80% in the article namespace. Active since 2011. Mostly focused on music (artists biographies, record labels, etc). I'm creating/expanding and/or adding refs to those articles. I intend to continue and think an account would help. Presently I can't access Randy Newman's Playboy interview from 1987, for instance ([5]), or this article on Kranky Records ([6]), etc. Neatnik (talk) 08:18, 31 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  251. User:Graeme Bartlett. Active since 2005 on en Wikipedia with over 40,000 edits. Created several hundred articles, and also frequently rescue from CSD by adding references. I will continue to write new content and rescue inadequately referenced material. HighBeam will greatly improve non-recent references. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 23:13, 31 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  252. User:Antemister usually active in the German WP (about 9000 contribs), contributing to contemporary history and politics, expecially in the afro.asian region, a topic where access to such news media is really helpful--Antemister (talk) 07:38, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  255. Dry Martini, 4500+ edits on it.wikipedia (active since April 2009), active in RC patrolling and welcoming new users. I would use the account to check information during patrolling, to get references for new articles (I also do that, yes ;-) ) and to retrieve references for the Reference recovery project on it.wiki. --Dry Martini (talk) 16:43, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
