The Los Angeles Auto Show is an annual auto show held at the Los Angeles Convention Center in mid-to-late November. The LA Auto Show is an OICA sanctioned international exhibition and also endorsed by the Greater Los Angeles New Car Dealers Association. It is open to the public for ten days each year, filling 760,000 square feet (71,000 m2) of exhibit space.

Every year the LA Auto Show kicks off with three Press & Trade Days full of activity for journalists, designers and industry representatives alike. In 2014, the show had a record number of debuts with more than 65 World and North American debuts. The first of three Press & Trade Days is devoted to the Connected Car Expo, which unites automotive and technology professionals in an effort to increase development and foster relationship-building in the connected car industry, providing attendees with access to the key players and top media constructing the future of the connected car.

History

The Los Angeles Auto Show began in 1907 with ninety-nine vehicles on display at Morley’s Skating Rink. As the auto industry grew, the auto show changed venues four times throughout the 1920s to accommodate the growing needs of vendors. In 1926, it took place at the corner of Hill and Washington where it stayed for the next four years. During the 1929 show, an electrical circuit in one of the airplane exhibits caught fire causing the entire show to go up in flames ending in more than $1 Million in damage. With the help of the community, the show re-opened one day later at the Shrine Auditorium.

The show continued to prove successful throughout the 1930s, but took a down turn during the Second World War and went on hiatus from 1940 through 1951. In 1952, the show re-opened at the Pan Pacific Auditorium with 152 vehicles on display, including those from international manufacturers.

In 2006, the show moved its dates from early January to late November/early December, thus resulting in two shows during the year 2006, the second marking the 100 year anniversary show. In response to the rapid changes that new technologies such as driver assist and cloud-based infotainment are fueling in the automotive industry, the LA Auto Show organizers have created the Connected Car Expo. [1]

Overview

The first event to kick off the show to the public is the annual charity event, LA Auto Show Preview Party, which takes place on the Thursday night before the first public day. All proceeds from the festive event benefit youth music education programs of the GRAMMY Museum.

Press & Trade Days also include the following events:

  • Connected Car Expo: a one-day conference and three day expo that has become the authoritative gathering for auto and tech industry professionals to connect and discuss/feature the future of mobility.
  • The Press & Trade Days Kickoff Party: following the end of the Connected Car Expo Conference, industry and media professionals gather to celebrate the kickoff of Press & Trade Days
  • MPG Motoring Invitational: a cars & coffee breakfast called the Motoring Invitational sponsored by the Motor Press Guild
  • Green Car of the Year Award: presented by the Green Car Journal
  • Design LA Open House & Reception: advanced automotive design studios from around the world present their concepts to a judging committee and compete for top honor; winner of judges' pick as well as people's choice award are both announced during the annual reception
  • Advanced Technology & Green Ride & Drive: test drives of the newest tech and green advancements exclusively for media
  • Connected City Summit: gathers government, automotive and tech professionals to discuss the future of mobility and the development of the connected city
  • Automobile designers finish out Design LA at the Designers’ Night Reception hosted by Car Design News (offsite and separate registration required to attend)

November–December

The November 2006 Los Angeles International Auto Show was held on November 29 through December 10, 2006. The Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d'Automobiles lists this show under their 2006 season. This is the second L.A. show this year, the first being in January, right before the Detroit show where it used to languish. It's arguably the biggest in the event's long history dating back to 1907. It's also the first year the show has earned an international designation, giving show organizers the extra clout to attract more world unveilings when the show lands in its permanent slot next year in early November.
