Welcome to the 2013 WikiCup

Hello, J04n, and welcome to the 2013 WikiCup! Your submissions' page is here. The first round will last until the end of February, at which point the top 64 scorers will advance to the second round. We will be in touch at the end of every month, and signups are going to remain open until the end of January; if you know of anyone else who may like to take part, please let them know! A few reminders:

  • The rules can be found here. There have been a few changes from last year, which are listed on that page.
  • Anything you submit must have been nominated and promoted in 2013, and you need to have completed significant work upon it in 2013. (The articles you review at good article reviews does not need to have been nominated in 2013, but you do need to have started and completed the review in 2013.) We will be checking.
  • If you feel that another competitor is breaking the rules or abusing the competition in some way, please let a judge know. Please do not remove entries from the submissions' pages of others yourself.
  • Don't worry about calculating precisely how many points everything is worth. The bot will do that. The bot may occasionally get something wrong- let a judge know, or post on the WikiCup talk page if that happens.
  • Please try to be prompt in updating submissions' pages so that they can be double-checked.

Overall, however, don't worry, and have fun. It doesn't matter if you make the odd mistake; these things happen. Questions can be asked on the WikiCup talk page. Good luck! J Milburn and The ed17 12:55, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:All Likkered Up.jpeg)

Thanks for uploading File:All Likkered Up.jpeg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:59, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

Wikipedia Ambassadors update

Hi! You're getting this message because you are or have been a Wikipedia Ambassador. A new term is beginning for the United States and Canada Education Programs, and I wanted to give you an update on some important new information if you're interested in continuing your work this term as a Wikipedia Ambassador.

You may have heard a reference to a transition the education program is going through. This is the last term that the Wikimedia Foundation will directly run the U.S. and Canada programs; beginning in June, a proposed thematic organization is likely to take over organizing the program. You can read more about the proposal here.

Another major change in the program will take effect immediately. Beginning this term, a new MediaWiki education extension will replace all course pages and Ambassador lists. (See Wikipedia:Course pages and Help:Education Program extension for more details.) Included in the extension are online volunteer and campus volunteer user rights, which let you create and edit course pages and sign up as an ambassador for a particular course.

If you would like to continue serving as a Wikipedia Ambassador — even if you do not support a class this term — you must create an ambassador profile. If you're no longer interested in being a Wikipedia Ambassador, you don't need to do anything.

Please do these steps as soon as possible

First, you need the relevant user rights for Online and/or Campus Ambassadors. (If you are an admin, you can grant the rights yourself, for you as well as other ambassadors.) Just post your rights request here, and we'll get you set up as quickly as possible.

Once you've got the ambassador rights, please set up at a Campus and/or Online Ambassador profile. You can do so at:

Going forward, the lists of Ambassadors at Special:CampusAmbassadors and Special:OnlineAmbassadors will be the official roster of who is an active Ambassador. If you would like to be an Ambassador but not ready to serve this term, you can un-check the option in your profile to publicly list it (which will remove your profile from the list).

After that, you can sign on to support courses. The list of courses will be at Special:Courses. (By default, this lists "Current" courses, but you can change the Status filter to "Planned" to see courses for this term that haven't reached their listed start date yet.)

As this is the first term we have used the extension, we know there will be some bugs, and we know the feature set is not as rich as it could be. (A big wave of improvements is already in the pipeline. And if you know MediaWiki and could help with code review, we'd love to have your help!) Please reach out to me (Sage Ross) with any complaints, bug reports, and feature suggestions. The basic features of the extension are documented at Wikipedia:Course pages, and you can see a tutorial for setting up and using them here.

Communication and keeping up to date

In the past, the Education Program has had a pretty fragmented set of communication channels. We're trying to fix that. These are the recommended places to discuss and stay up-to-date on the education program:

  1. The education noticeboard has become the main on-wiki location for discussion of the Education Program. You can post there about broad education program issues as well as issues with individual courses.
  2. The Ambassadors Announce email list is a very low-traffic announcements list of important information all Ambassadors need to be aware of. We encourage all Ambassadors (and other interested Wikipedians) to subscribe to the list; follow the instructions on the link to add your email address.
  3. If you use IRC regularly, or need to try to reach someone immediately, the #wikipedia-en-ambassadors connect IRC channel is the place to find me and fellow Ambassadors.
Ambassador training and resources

We now have an online training for Ambassadors, which is intended to be both an orientation about the Wikipedia Ambassador role for newcomers and the manual for how to do the role. (There are parallel trainings for students and for educators as well.)

Please go through the training if you feel like you need a refresher on how a typical class is supposed to go and where the Ambassadors fit in, or if you want to review and help improve it. If there's something you'd like to see added, or other suggestions you have for it, feel free to edit the training and/or leave feedback. A primer on setting up and using course pages is included in the educators' training.

The Resources page of the training is the main place for Ambassador-related resources. If there's something you think is important as a resource that's not on there, please add it.

Finally, whether or not you work with any classes this term, I encourage you to post entries to the Trophy Case whenever you see excellent work from students or if you have great examples from past semesters. And, as always, let students (and other editors!) know when they do things well; a little WikiLove goes a long way!

Black Sabbath

Hi. Are you planning to take Black Sabbath to FAC? Plant's Strider (talk) 14:40, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

Hello, that would be wonderful but I really don't have the energy right now. A barrier would be the instability because of the reunion and new album. The section 'Reunion and 13 (2010–present)' totally needs to be rewritten, it looks more like a blog than a encyclopedia entry (i.e. a bunch of short paragraphs "on this day this happened...on that day this was announced, etc). Much of the meat of the article is in great shape though and I see you've been working on it. Let me know if you need a hand with any of it. J04n(talk page) 17:09, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

WikiCup 2013 January newsletter

Signups are now closed; we have our final 127 contestants for this year's competition. 64 contestants will make it to the next round at the end of February, but we're already seeing strong scoring compared to previous years. Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) currently leads, with 358 points. At this stage in 2012, the leader (Irish Citizen Army Grapple X (submissions)) had 342 points, while in 2011, the leader had 228 points. We also have a large number of scorers when compared with this stage in previous years. Florida 12george1 (submissions) was the first competitor to score this year, as he was last year, with a detailed good article review. Some other firsts:

Featured articles, portals and topics, as well as good topics, are yet to feature in the competition.

This year, the bonus points system has been reworked, with bonus points on offer for old articles prepared for did you know, and "multiplier" points reworked to become more linear. For details, please see Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. There have been some teething problems as the bot has worked its way around the new system, but issues should mostly be ironed out- please report any problems to the WikiCup talk page. Here are some participants worthy of note with regards to the bonus points:

  • United States Ed! (submissions) was the first to score bonus points, with Portland-class cruiser, a good article.
  • Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions) has the highest overall bonus points, as well as the highest scoring article, thanks to his work on Enrico Fermi, now a good article. The biography of such a significant figure to the history of science warrants nearly five times the normal score.
  • Chicago HueSatLum (submissions) claimed bonus points for René Vautier and Nicolas de Fer, articles that did not exist on the English Wikipedia at the start of the year; a first for the WikiCup. The articles were eligible for bonus points because of fact they were both covered on a number of other Wikipedias.

Also, a quick mention of British Empire The C of E (submissions), who may well have already written the oddest article of the WikiCup this year: did you know that the Fucking mayor objected to Fucking Hell on the grounds that there was no Fucking brewery? The gauntlet has been thrown down; can anyone beat it?

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. AfD/Gynandromorphophilia

I don't think there was a consensus to keep, as no-one suggested that it should be kept on the merits. I can count three deletes, two merges, and three to defer until the closure of the RfAr. I don't think a consensus to keep could be taken even from counting all three requests to defer as a positive support of keeping the article. Sceptre (talk) 11:58, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

I agree, my hope as I expressed in my remarks was a merge discussion on the talk page but I see how the keep closure was a bad decision on my part. J04n(talk page) 14:25, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

Black Sabbath

Hi, Jo4n. I see you're one of the major contributors to the Black Sabbath article. I've been working on it lately, but I've noticed some issues that I cannot fix. One of the major problems is that the article is too dependent on online sources, and doesn't make full use of print books. Hi J04n, I noticed that you closed this AfD as a delete. I accept the decision but was hoping you could restore/paste the content at the top of the article (the only paragraph of text) to the article Association football in Costa Rica. Anthony Bean still around

Hi, I noticed you recently closed the deletion discussion for the Anthony Bean Community Theater with the decision to leave the article in tact because there was no consensus and because, after extending the debate twice, the discussion was attracting no additional attention. I am fairly new to the process of proposing articles for deletion, and this was one of my first attempts: I thought I had made a thorough argument in favor of deletion, and the fact that the discussion was attracting next to no attention might have been interpreted as further evidence of the non-notability of the article's subject (and this after I had left notices on the pages of major editors and writers of the piece-- after three weeks even they had nothing to say about it!). I understand that the discussion did not produce enough debate for much evaluation of the proposal to delete-- I am wondering why my arguments in favor of deletion (if accurate and true and unrefuted, as it seemed they were) were not enough (given the virtual absence of opposition) to follow through with the deletion. I can still see no grounds for the article to exist, and it seems that keeping it just because there wasn't enough "debate" over it is not the most sound reasoning-- if my argument against keeping it was not shown to be invalid. But maybe I am missing something here as well, and like I said, I am new at deletion nominations. Can I get your thoughts on this? I don't want to waste my breath proposing a deletion that fails just because no one cared enough to bother to oppose me. Thanks! KDS4444Talk 23:46, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I reopened the debate. I wouldn't interpret a lack of attention to the debate as anything but a lack of interest one way or the other. As for my close, I am not comfortable deleting an article based on one editor's opinion unless it is absolutely a clear case. Let's see if it attracts any attention. J04n(talk page) 00:15, 24 February 2013 (UTC)
This looked like a no consensus to me too (based on the strength of the arguments rooted in policy, and even with the additional delete !vote). But I weighed in with a weak keep instead, to hopefully assist the closer. Cheers. -- Trevj (talk) 02:48, 3 March 2013 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:Buddy Holly A Rock & Roll Collection.jpg)

Thanks for uploading File:Buddy Holly A Rock & Roll Collection.jpg.

Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:48, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

This image is totally redundant right now, as I merged the soundtrack page into 1993 film page. Do you have objections to removal of this image? --George Ho (talk) 05:37, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

Proposed changes to {{admin}} template.

Hello, I made a slight change to your userpage linking it to your sucessful RFA. Please feel free to revert and ask me any question you might have. I have also proposed a change to the {{admin}} template to that the {{sysop}} template (which links RFAs) and {{admin}} template are merged. Please see the talk page. –BuickCenturyDriver 09:52, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

Hello J04n, the article was complely new written and the name changed. Before there was more than 2 years an other hoax in this encyclopedia. Your final statment that this page is not a hoax and is notable is only correct concering the actual status of the article. Maybe you can clarify this there. I also suggest to delete the redirection to the fake name German Caribbean at last. Thanks! Yours --Otberg (talk) 11:48, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

I'm not 100% sure of what you are asking me to consider, but I tweaked my comment. To get the redirect removed you should really go to Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion. J04n(talk page) 12:02, 27 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for your correction. Concering the fake name German Caribbean I have done my duty to supply information about the problem. Now it's your and yours colleges part to do something or not. Sorry about my English. Yours --Otberg (talk) 12:47, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

Regarding Deletion of Commtel Networks Page

Hi J04n, Greetings for the day!! We came to know today that 'Commtel Networks' Wikipedia page has been deleted. It came both as a surprise and shock to us, for we were not intimated about the same. I have gone through the process of doing significant R&D and hence am getting back to you requesting to get the page back online. The only argument or reasoning I can do is that the page was never meant to look like an advertisement and we did make a couple of changes to avoid any discrepancies. However, I am confident enough that the matter can be resolved if we both co-operate and work towards it. Requesting you to consider our situation and (being a beginner, unlike a pro like you) we can indeed resolve the challenge at hand and get the Commtel Networks page up and running. You canCommtel Networks (talk) 10:35, 1 March 2013 (UTC) be my guiding force for a setting up a standard Wikipedia page. Also refer my message below for 'deletion review' which suggested me to get in touch with you. Thanks and regards Commtel Networks Commtel Networks (talk) 10:35, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

"We were not duly communicated about the 'specific' changes required on our Commtel Networks page. Kindly upload the page and highlight the areas where the changes are to be made, so that we can take requisite steps and get the page back online. We don't mean to advertise/promote our content, it's just another medium to let people know and understand better what Commtel does. The page was deleted by J04n at 14:33, on 26 February 2013. Requesting you to review your decision and help us in getting the page back on Wikipedia. Thanks and Regards -Commtel Networks (talk) 07:39, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

X mark.svg Not done - As announced at the top of the page, this Requests for Undeletion process is only for articles that were deleted uncontroversially, and does not apply to articles deleted after a deletion discussion. Since the article you are here about was deleted at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Commtel Networks, it cannot be undeleted through this process. However, if you believe that the outcome of the discussion did not reflect the consensus of the participants, or that significant new information has come to light since the article was deleted, you may contact the administrator who closed the discussion, user J04n (talk · contribs). After you do so, if your concerns are not addressed and you still seek undeletion, a request may be made at deletion review. I appreciate your politeness though! WikiCup 2013 February newsletter

Round 1 is now over. The top 64 scorers have progressed to round 2, where they have been randomly split into eight pools of eight. At the end of April, the top two from each pool, as well as the 16 highest scorers from those remaining, will progress to round 3. Commiserations to those eliminated; if you're interested in still being involved in the WikiCup, able and willing reviewers will always be needed, and if you're interested in getting involved with other collaborative projects, take a look at the WikiWomen's Month discussed below.

Round 1 saw 21 competitors with over 100 points, which is fantastic; that suggests that this year's competition is going to be highly competative. Our lower scores indicate this, too: A score of 19 was required to reach round 2, which was significantly higher than the 11 points required in 2012 and 8 points required in 2011. The score needed to reach round 3 will be higher, and may depend on pool groupings. In 2011, 41 points secured a round 3 place, while in 2012, 65 was needed. Our top three scorers in round 1 were:

  1. Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), primarily for an array of warship GAs.
  2. London Miyagawa (submissions), primarily for an array of did you knows and good articles, some of which were awarded bonus points.
  3. New South Wales Casliber (submissions), due in no small part to Canis Minor, a featured article awarded a total of 340 points. A joint submission with Alaska Keilana (submissions), this is the highest scoring single article yet submitted in this year's competition.

Other contributors of note include:

Featured topics have still played no part in this year's competition, but once again, a curious contribution has been offered by British Empire The C of E (submissions): did you know that there is a Shit Brook in Shropshire? With April Fools' Day during the next round, there will probably be a good chance of more unusual articles...

March sees the WikiWomen's History Month, a series of collaborative efforts to aid the women's history WikiProject to coincide with Women's History Month and International Women's Day. A number of WikiCup participants have already started to take part. The project has a to-do list of articles needing work on the topic of women's history. Those interested in helping out with the project can find articles in need of attention there, or, alternatively, add articles to the list. Those interested in collaborating on articles on women's history are also welcome to use the WikiCup talk page to find others willing to lend a helping hand. Another collaboration currently running is an an effort from WikiCup participants to coordinate a number of Easter-themed did you know articles. Contributions are welcome!

A few final administrative issues. From now on, submission pages will need only a link to the article and a link to the nomination page, or, in the case of good article reviews, a link to the review only. See your submissions' page for details. This will hopefully make updating submission pages a little less tedious. Would you consider your AFD decision for the Dorner Manifesto to be redirected to the shootings article? This is because the manifesto is very much related to the killings and could make some irrational sense. The Dorner article could be more of his background and navy history. It could be POV and make it look like a smear if in the Dorner article but fit very well with the killing article. Please do not ask me to go through a bureaucratic mess. Simply revise you redirect decision. You may note that I am the only person giving the redirect decision so much thought and writing to you about it. Bamler2 (talk) 01:22, 2 March 2013 (UTC)

Nik Robson

I see that you closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Nik Robson as Keep. There appear to be three people agreeing with the nominator that he is non-notable, and not a single person arguing otherwise, although there was discussion about the notability of another person. Could you explain why you decided keep was the appropriate action, please.-gadfium 03:24, 2 March 2013 (UTC)

Deleting discussion comments

Hello J04n, is there some reason why you deleted several comments from a deletion discussion? I believe they are relevant to it, and thus find your edit hard to understand. Thanks in advance, Toccata quarta (talk) 13:56, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

Review

Hi, I've left a concerned note at your admin review page. The fault really lies with the nominator for the deletion of the Harry Ishisaka article, but as the closer of the AFD and deleter of the article I think you should always check that the article creator has been alerted of the AFD. It seems you do a lot of good work with closing AFDs, so I hope this will be constructive for you, regards.♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 17:47, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

Question re AfD closure

I was wondering why you closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Octopus cable as delete, not transwiki which was the consensus? Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Definitions of Pogrom

Done you will find it at User:Oncenawhile/Definitions of Pogrom. J04n(talk page) 21:43, 10 March 2013 (UTC)
Thanks Joan. Could I ask for your advice on something related to the AfD?
The two main questions raised in the AfD were whether it was notable enough as a standalone topic and whether there was any A+B=C synth. Most editors thought they knew the answer to these questions, perhaps due to the sensitivity of the topic, but few if any read the actual underlying sources on which the overall gist of the article was based. That of course leaves me unsatisfied, primarily because i was unable to convince editors to invest the time to read the scholarly works to allow them to come to a more considered view. In other words, because i feel almost noone bothered reading the main underlying sources, I have no idea whether the decision to delete was really right.
My question is, assuming for the sake of argument that my belief in the underlying veracity of the article was correct, what could i have done to convince editors and commentators to actually read the underlying sources before taking a view in the debate?
For the avoidance of doubt, my question is not whether the decision to delete was right - that bridge has been crossed and I have accepted it. I just want to learn what to do differently next time so i end up with proper closure.
Thanks in advance for any advice or thoughts on on this.

FYI my name is John :) Not sure you could have acted differently, but...it is often beneficial to be brief; simply writing "topic has been covered in 3rd party sources, see these 3 sources" is an effective argument without any extraneous words. It's never a good idea to compare the article to other articles. My advice is to participate in other deletion discussions, like anything else, you get better with more experience PLUS you'll become more credible as folks get used to seeing you around these discussions. Good luck, J04n(talk page) 23:47, 10 March 2013 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:Becoming (Christine Denté album).jpg)

Thanks for uploading File:Becoming (Christine Denté album).jpg. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

soft delete contesting

Regarding this soft delete, [1], I am wondering if you took into consideration my final comments in the AfD page and my final edits in the article. I am saying this as those new edits were probably not seen by the main person proposing the delete. I am therefore asking you to undelete it. That being said, I did not have full access to the article in Brill Encyclopedia of Islam at the time you deleted the article. If you revive it I can add even more material based on the full text. (You may revive it in a sub-page of my user page if you want).--Kazemita1 (talk) 05:56, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on File:Back on Top (O'Jays album).jpeg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think that your page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. afd question

I come with a question and desire to learn, not as a complaint or challenge or anger at you.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valrhona . This is an obscure candy company. My guess is that a small maker of car parts or plumbing parts or a larger local law firm would be deleted because we in wp are consumers, not necessarily wise people. What should we do? I say this because of tier porn star and video game artcles. Comments? Bamler2 (talk) 01:19, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

I'm sorry but I don't know what you are asking me. J04n(talk page)
I believe that they are requesting that you (for some reason) PROD the article mentioned. I believe 'tier' should read 'their' but I'm not sure who 'they' are? Presumably the User that created the article, rather than the chocolate company. I'm going to take a quick look into this, but this kind of random accusation seems to be Bamler2's M.O. - Will let you know what I find! AnthonyW90 (talk) 22:59, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
Cannot find anything of interest here. Neither the Article's OP nor any of the major contributors since then (the article has been going since 2005!) seem to be of any concern. The article looks okay to me! AnthonyW90 (talk) 12:57, 20 March 2013 (UTC)

sock question

I discovered a sock. My question to you is if indefinite blocks should be prohibited. After all, it is like life in prison. I see it happens hundreds of times a day. Perhaps it should be limited to one year and three times needed for it to be indefinite? What do you think? WP is suppose to be liberal but a quick death penalty is very right wing. Bamler2 (talk) 01:38, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

  • That's apparently me that you're talking about, Bamler2. If you can prove that I'm a sock, I'd prefer to be blocked indefinitely immediately, if it's all the same to you. Apart from that, I'm dying to find out whose sock I am... :-DDD --Randykitty (talk) 08:06, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
Well, the case has been brought to WP:ANI, and according to other users, Bamler appears to be hounding Randy, along with still failing to prove that Randy's a sock. ZappaOMati 17:08, 23 March 2013 (UTC)

At Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Aakash Educational Services Limited it's odd that the only keep rationales came from single-purpose accounts that are heavily associated with the topic, yet your closing comment made no mention of the notability concerns, which the delete comments addressed. Where is this "keep" consensus you alluded to, and why were the notability concerns ignored in favor of SPAs, all of which seem to have a COI regarding the subject? - SudoGhost 15:03, 21 March 2013 (UTC)

There was plenty of SPA action on both sides. I tried to do my best with the decision, I think it would have been easier to go with delete but after the page was worked on I thought the arguments that stayed at delete were on the weaker side. Could I have blown the call? Absolutely. I would take no offense if you took it to DRV. J04n(talk page) 18:49, 21 March 2013 (UTC)

Huh? Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Scott Prouty

I don't think you closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Scott Prouty very well. This was a disputed action and you should have provided some of the logic behind your decision. I don't understand how your action is supported by WP:BLP1E. Could you explain it? Jehochman Talk 11:32, 22 March 2013 (UTC)

I'm scratching my head because WP:BLP1E says:
  1. "If that person otherwise remains, and is likely to remain, a low-profile individual. " -- FAIL
  2. "It is not the case that the event is significant and the individual's role within it is substantial and well-documented" -- FAIL
So, I think you have misapplied policy. Could you address these two specific points? I'm failing to see any plausible way to apply WP:BLP1E as a reason to delete this content, and absent a good explation from you, this will be appealed to deletion review. Jehochman Talk 14:06, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
  • We didn't keep any of the content, if someone searches his name they will be redirected to an area that mentions him, his name is already in that section. Feel free to bring to DRV, I don't mind at all, but the difference between redirect and delete is minimal at best. J04n(talk page) 15:06, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
  • I've been suggesting that the content be kept. Your deletion was completely out of policy. (1) There was no consensus to delete; it was "no consensus", which defaults to keep, and (2) those commenting delete failed to explain how the article met the three criteria of BLP1E which would be necessary to justify deletion. It's sort of a slam dunk that this person is NOT a low-profile individual, and that it IS the case that the event is significant and the individual's role within it substantial. Basically, it looks like you just went in there without any regard for policy or what people said and just did what you wanted. Jehochman Talk 19:43, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
  • I'm sorry, I misread your comments above, I was thinking you were telling me it should have been deleted. Let me look it over again to see if I really misread consensus. Give me a few hours, I'm about to head out the door. J04n(talk page) 19:46, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
Thanks! I've struck my exasperated last remark which wasn't very fair. Essentially, when counting up the opinions you need to filter out those that have no basis in policy. This individual has a ton of news coverage, chose to make his identity known, and is therefore notable. Jehochman Talk 19:49, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
Terrible job on my part, first in my poor close and second in not understanding you question, I changed the decision. You didn't need to strike out you comment, but thanks. J04n(talk page) 21:35, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
I would say you did a good job on the first close. 10/6 against keeping seems like a pretty good concensus, especially since the argument against BLP1E was not established. The argument that this person is in the same category of John Hinkley (who shot the president) is simply preposterous. Arzel (talk) 23:21, 23 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi Jo4n. I'm a bit surprised by your conclusion of this deletion discussion. I don't think that there was a consensus that "the information belongs somewhere". There was a consensus that there may be a process called sandfall, but that it's not the process described by this article. The consensus was, I think, pretty clearly redirect (no merge). Pburka (talk) 13:29, 23 March 2013 (UTC)

Even if it is redirect that discussion can continue on the talk page. Perhaps I could have worded my rationale differently, and I'll re-look at that, but the outcome will be the same. J04n(talk page) 13:38, 23 March 2013 (UTC)
I see what you mean, I added that second sentence as an afterthought and should have put more thought into it. J04n(talk page) 13:44, 23 March 2013 (UTC)

Knowledge. Understanding. Skill

J04n, in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Knowledge. Understanding. Skill, I made a considerable effort to find evidence that this journal meets any of the relevant notability criteria, and ended up presenting a strong case that it doesn't. None of the supporters of this article backed up their arguments with a reference to any particular policy or guideline. I could understand a "no consensus" close, but a "keep" implies that their arguments were somehow better. I would appreciate it if you explained your reasoning. RockMagnetist (talk) 17:25, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

I carefully re-read everything and see your point. I think the best course of action is to re-open the discussion and let someone else close it, which I have done. J04n(talk page) 22:10, 26 March 2013 (UTC)
Thank you. I think part of the problem is that I stated my arguments a little too concisely, so they may have been overlooked. RockMagnetist (talk) 22:23, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

Rawz al-jinan ve ruh al-jinan

Hello,

A good wiki friend brought to my attention that the correct spelling for Rawz al-jinan ve ruh al-jinan would be Rawz al-jinan wa ruh al-jinan. I've nominated an article you deleted for review. Your closure obviously followed from the discussion; the discussion just didn't really give the article a fair chance. J Milburn (talk) 10:58, 29 March 2013 (UTC)

I have no problem with you sending it to DRV BUT if you said that you wanted to contribute to the discussion I would have happily reopened it. J04n(talk page) 11:02, 29 March 2013 (UTC)

Not a problem, I relisted the AfD. J04n(talk page) 14:09, 29 March 2013 (UTC)

Relist rationale

Just a note, in case you missed the comment by someone else, that "failure to notify a page creator" is not a valid reason for relisting an article at AfD. There is no formal requirement to notify a page creator. Carrite (talk) 16:03, 29 March 2013 (UTC)

  • (Maybe not, but it is considered a general courtesy and failure to do so immediately makes your motivations look suspicious at best and devious at worst. I have nominated articles for deletion; I have always notified the article's original creator, even though that is sometimes a little awkward; it was always the right choice. If anyone nominated any of the articles that I myself had created, I would darn well hope the nominator would have the courage to contact me and at least let me know. If they had a leg to stand on, they shouldn't have anything to worry about anyway. KDS4444Talk 22:04, 28 April 2013 (UTC))

WikiCup 2013 March newsletter

We are halfway through round two. Pool A sees the strongest competition, with five out of eight of its competitors scoring over 100, and Pool H is lagging, with half of its competitors yet to score. WikiCup veterans lead overall; Pool A's Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) (2010's winner) leads overall, with poolmate London Miyagawa (submissions) (a finalist in 2011 and 2012) not far behind. Pool F's New South Wales Casliber (submissions) (a finalist in 2010, 2011 and 2012) is in third. The top two scorers in each pool, as well as the next highest 16 scorers overall, will progress to round three at the end of April.

Today has seen a number of Easter-themed did you knows from WikiCup participants, and March has seen collaboration from contestants with WikiWomen's History Month. It's great to see the WikiCup being used as a locus of collaboration; if you know of any collaborative efforts going on, or want to start anything up, please feel free to use the WikiCup talk page to help find interested editors. As well as fostering collaboration, we're also seeing the Cup encouraging the improvement of high-importance articles through the bonus point system. Highlights from the last month include GAs on physicist Niels Bohr (Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions)), on the European hare (Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions)), on the constellation Circinus (Alaska Keilana (submissions) and New South Wales Casliber (submissions)) and on the Third Epistle of John (Indiana Cerebellum (submissions)). All of these subjects were covered on at least 50 Wikipedias at the beginning of the year and, subsequently, each contribution was awarded at least three times as many points as normal.

Wikipedians who enjoy friendly competition may be interested in participating in April's wikification drive. While wikifying an article is typically not considered "significant work" such that it can be claimed for WikiCup points, such gnomish work is often invaluable in keeping articles in shape, and is typically very helpful for new writers who may not be familiar with formatting norms.

A quick reminder: now, submission pages will need only a link to the article and a link to the nomination page, or, in the case of good article reviews, a link to the review only. See your submissions' page for details. This will hopefully make updating submission pages a little less tedious. So a print encyclopedia, a strawberry shortcake, and a sycamore walk into a bar - wait, have you heard this one? (talk) 23:39, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

List of Big Brother 10 housemates (UK) was deleted as a result of a recent AFD, and there has been no argument that the series 10 list should be deleted but not the others - the only difference I can see is that some editors have participated in one of the two discussions and not in the other. Does the result of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Big Brother 1 housemates (UK) indicate that consensus has changed, or that the earlier AFD less accurately represents community consensus? No worries. Are you using a touch screen? I used to get that problem occassionally when using a borrowed i-Pad. The rollback buttons on watchlists and edit histories are particularly problematic. SpinningSpark 17:14, 6 April 2013 (UTC)

Metametaphysics

One to keep and four to merge/redirect? How is that no consensus? ----Snowded TALK 17:48, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

(talk page stalker)I would support that close (although personally I would be inclined to have relisted it for a second time). It is a great example of why we do not count !votes. Brewes ohare said a lot, but never got round to making a definite bolded recommendation. If he was a newbie I would still count it, but Brewes is a very experienced editor and would be fully aware of the consequences of not bolding a recommendation. Shii's merge recommendation was not based in policy (a few people talking about something doesn't make it a topic about which Wikipedia can say something useful), au contraire, that's exactly what makes a topic notable if they are discussing it in reliable sources (WP:N). Finally, the proposed meta-ontology target is not well thought through and I would certainly not be willing to be part of such a merge. Ontology, at least according to our article is a sub-topic of metaphysics. Its hard to see how a meta investigation of the parent topic of ontology could also be a sub-topic of the meta investigation of the sub-topic. One could say that was an ontological nonsense. Those editors recommending a merge are perfectly free to go about it as part of normal editing, there is no need at all for an AfD to do that. But I suspect that is not what they really want, and if they tried they would realise it was a problematic thing to do (either that or make a total mess). SpinningSpark 19:51, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
Spinningspark summed it up well. Also, Mark Viking's assertion of notability was never refuted and consensus was never reached as to an appropriate merge/redirect target. Since the discussion changed from a "keep vs. delete" to a "Keep vs merge somewhere" there is no reason to keep the AfD open since that discussion can continue on the talkpage. Recreation of articles deleted by BLPPROD

I have policy question for you. Two days ago you deleted the article on Irakli Tsamalashvili per WP:BLPPROD. About 24 hours later, Tsamalashvili7 (talk · contribs) recreated the article word for word as stood before deletion. So I was wondering what options there are here? Do we have to wait another ten days before it gets deleted again? Or, since the content is identical, does it still qualify as an unsourced BLP that has been PROD'ed for at least ten days? Cheers. Sir Sputnik (talk) 14:56, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

Inquiry

Hi J04n. I was wondering if I could ask you a question about AFD closes with little participation since you've done so many XFD closes in general. What is the appropriate close for AFDs with no participation (other than the nomin) or only 1 !vote in support of the nomination and has been re-listed three times? Are these generally closed as no consensus or does it count as consensus albeit less than desirable participation amount but consensus nonetheless? Wondering if there's a guideline that specifies this issue? Mkdwtalk 07:51, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

Hello, an option in these cases is a WP:SOFTDELETE which is then treated as if the page were deleted via an uncontested prod and can be recreated via WP:REFUND. J04n(talk page) 11:01, 28 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks J04n. That's exactly what I was looking for. Cheers, Mkdwtalk 18:59, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

deleting Linda DeLibero

You deleted this too hastily -- and on a Sunday night is unfair. I heard from two academics who were going to weigh in this morning. Can you please put it back up or give me access to the content so that I can save it for re-trying without building it again from scratch? I would have done this yesterday to save my work!!Critic11 (talk) 12:07, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

No problem, it has been relisted. J04n(talk page) 13:09, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
It's unusual to relist after closure, especially because the AfD seems to have run its full course. This has gummed up the works a bit, since the AfD has already been bot-moved off to the archive. At the very least, it needs to be restored to the 3 discussion boards it was on and removed from the archive for tranparency. Agricola44 (talk) 14:51, 29 April 2013 (UTC).
I think Wikipedia ought to make allowances for the slow pace of academia, thank you. I understand that Agricola44 seems bent on deleting this entry, but clearly he/she doesn't know anything about academia. I appreciate it being back up so that others -- people who research and teach for a living -- have time to respond. There isn't really a need for immediate deletionCritic11 (talk) 15:14, 29 April 2013 (UTC).
I hardly expect to debate you here on some other user's talk page. Relisting after close is extremely unusual, especially when the AfD runs its normal course. Agricola44 (talk) 15:31, 29 April 2013 (UTC).
To whom do I lodge a complaint about the debate? Who decides when it is over? The subject is the Director (verified) of an academic program at a major university. The subject is a verified regular contributor to a notable public radio station (WYPR) hosted by a notable host (Dan Rodricks). The subject has (verified) 30 years of publications on film and culture in notable journals (not all archived online). Yes, the subject's academic writing is thin but this was never put forth as the subject's primary source of notability. The subject lectures widely and publicly (including in Macedonia) and Nanjing (do not have a link yet). She is clearly recognized and noted as a public film scholar. All of these claims are verifiable and evident on their face. So why the harping refusals?Critic11 (talk) 03:51, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

possible meatpuppetry and broadside personal attacks targeting delete !votes editors

  • A new spa with a total of four edits has shown up, a frivolous WP:3O was filed, and a frivolous accusation of sock puppetry was made today.  I was merely the first editor attacked.  What role are you prepared to take here?  The sourcing is so weak that there is as yet no evidence that Linda DeLibero and Linda Benn DeLibero are the same person (other than the WP:OR of multiple keep !votes).  I put an OR tag on this fact in the article, and the tag was replaced with a source that does not verify the claim.  Unscintillating (talk) 00:34, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

Article deleted, please review

I want to know why Vibhinta Verma is deleted. There were lot of new references are there. I had added nearly 20 references to support the model and film actress. The comments on discussion page were really biased. The editors who discuss, are biased and have personal dislikings for me. I think you should have waited for more comments instead of having comments of just two editors who look like to have some personal conflicts with the page creator(me), can you please wait for more unbiased comments? But, i had added more references after the comments of those editors. If you look at the article by yourself you will see the new references. in the mean time i will add more references.DAR (talk) 08:23, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

As pointed out in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Vibhinta Verma, all of the references were either passing mentions or not from reliable sources. J04n(talk page) 01:22, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

Query re Deletion of David J. Howe entry

Hi

I'm David J Howe, and puzzled as to why my Wikipedia entry has been deleted after some 10 years (I forget how long!) of it being there ...

I've read the log (at least I think it's the log) and can't see much information there (apart from being called a nerd!) so I was wondering what I might need to do/provide to you to overturn the decision?

I am a respected researcher and writer on DOCTOR WHO, frequently approached by the BBC and newspapers for comment and information. My books are widely cited as the most influential and significant about the show, and I have created the TRANSCENDENTAL TOYBOX merchandise site and books, documenting the wealth of merchandise released on the show. I'm also a publisher (Telos Publishing) and writer with screen credits. I would hope that this meets at least some of the criteria for inclusion.

Please can you help me understand the decision here,

Thanks so much

Deletion of David J. Howe

Hi. Per the instructions at Wikipedia:Deletion review, I'm dropping you a note about the deletion of David J. Howe (see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/David J. Howe). I don't think you did anything wrong in the closing, but I think the deletion was inappropriate in part because there was no notification of the Doctor Who wikiproject, whose members would have been able to find plenty of sources establishing Howe's notability. I did a quick web search and found sources saying things like "David Howe ought to need no introduction. His contribution to the range of factual books published about Doctor Who over the last six years is staggering, and he is undisputedly the most prolific author of Doctor Who non-fiction ever.", noting his role as chair of the British Fantasy Society, and citing his work extensively in academic studies of Doctor Who. If the article is restored, I could add these and other sources.

If you want to go through the full deletion review, I completely understand; I'm just making sure that I dot all the 'i's and cross all the 't's first. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 15:45, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

  • Participation in that discussion was pretty low. I will move the page to your userspace to allow you to add your sources and address the points brought up in the Afd. J04n(talk page) 01:32, 2 May 2013 (UTC)
I've added the sources I found today. I'm sure there are more out there, but I think that the ones I've found establish notability and show that Howe passes the requirements of WP:AUTHOR (the only relevant points made in the AfD).
So what's the next step? Do I put it up for deletion review, or submit it to "Articles for Consideration"? I've been out of the loop for a while and some of the procedures seem to have changed around here. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 02:52, 2 May 2013 (UTC)
I would suggest finding a bit more, right now I think you are relying too much on fansites and blogs. I think it would probably be renominated as it is now, but this is just my opinion. If you want to try as it is now, click "submit the page" on the template at the top which will send it to articles for creation where it will be impartially assessed. You'll get no objections from me, good luck. J04n(talk page) 03:38, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:Beneath the Velvet Sun.jpg)

Thanks for uploading File:Beneath the Velvet Sun.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. Peter Bush

Thanks for your Keep on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Peter Bush (businessman). This has been a painfully drawn out process and has seen some very odd responses that suggest that editors do little research before casting a "vote". The original call for deletion came within minutes of a confrontation I had with the editor who made the call and at best appeared to be vexatious. For that reason I was very surprised by the calls for Delete from so many. Where does this article go wrong or am I mistaken in finding the subject obviously notable in the Australan business and sporting worlds? Castlemate (talk) 20:51, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for your help at Steven G.Kaplan.

Perhaps you could have a look at the case at Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Incidents#BLP_violations_by_two_SPAs_at_Steven_G._Kaplan ?

I think more than a first-level warning is necessitated here, like either a block, or a final-warning. These are significant blatant BLP violations that have been going on for months with one account and years with another. — Cirt (talk) 18:20, 3 May 2013 (UTC)

Merger discussion

Hi, during the Michael Brutsch AfD discussion I saw a number of users talk about merging or restructuring the article into another one, so I am opening up a discussion of such a merge here, if you are interested in participating. Thanks! Breadblade (talk) 20:38, 3 May 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for closing the AfD. In the meantime, I have created the disambiguation page: Roba. Cheers --Edcolins (talk) 13:19, 4 May 2013 (UTC)

I have also restored 8 versions (except the oldest one, due to an apparent copyright violation). IMHO, there is no reason why these old versions shouldn't be visible in the page history. --Edcolins (talk) 13:26, 4 May 2013 (UTC)

I've deleted all the articles created by this sock of Paul Bedson. I can see that people might want to recreated Christmas Island Cuisine, which is fine. Sorry if this causes a problem, but he's created about a dozen socks in the last few days and a lot of articles, so fine-tuning isn't an option. Bedson was blocked originally in large part for misuse of sources (and then community banned) and is doing this both to stick his thumb up at us and also to blackmail us into unblocking him. WikiCup 2013 April newsletter

We are a week into Round 3, but it is off to a flying start, with Republic of Rose Island Sven Manguard (submissions) claiming for the high-importance Portal:Sports and Portal:Geography (which are the first portals ever awarded bonus points in the WikiCup) and Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) claiming for a did you know of sea, the highest scoring individual did you know article ever submitted for the WikiCup. Round 2 saw very impressive scores at close; first place New South Wales Casliber (submissions) and second place Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) both scored over 1000 points; a feat not seen in Round 2 since 2010. This, in part, has been made possible by the change in the bonus points rules, but is also testament to the quality of the competition this year. Pool C and Pool G were most competitive, with three quarters of participants making it to Round 3, while Pool D was the least, with only the top two scorers making it through. The lowest qualifying score was 123, significantly higher than last year's 65, 2011's 41 or even 2010's 100.

The next issue of The Signpost is due to include a brief update on the current WikiCup, comparing it to previous years' competitions. This may be of interest to current WikiCup followers, and may help bring some more new faces into the community. We would also like to note that this round includes an extra competitor to the 32 advertised, who has been added to a random pool. This extra inclusion seems to have been the fairest way to deal with a small mistake made before the beginning of this round, but should not affect the competition in a large way. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please feel free to contact one of the judges.

A rules clarification: content promoted between rounds can be claimed in the round after the break, but not the round before. The case in point is content promoted on 29/30 April, which may be claimed in this round. Catalina White article deletion

Hello, I was involved in the discussion regarding the proposed deletion of the Catalina White article. On 7 May 2013 I wrote in support to keep it due to her success and accomplishments as a model and posted several of her magazine covers. A user named LM2000 made comments opposing my post yesterday. I just came back today to continue the discussion and give my rebuttal to LM2000's comments, only to find that you have already deleted the article! I think this has been done very prematurely. The discussion was only a few days old! I didn't even get a chance to give a reply to that users comments. As a result I believe the wrong conclusion has been reached on this matter. Please could you restore the article and re-open the deletion discussion page ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Catalina_White ) so we can continue with our discussion. Thank you. 79.141.167.35 (talk) 00:48, 10 May 2013 (UTC)

No Pants Day

Just wanted to make sure you noted that the 'keep' comments in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/No Pants Day all pertained to sources about a completely different day, the No Pants Subway Ride, a different event on a different date than No Pants Day. The confusion in sourcing seemed to be the motivator behind the keep proponents. When you account for that, it looks like a pretty clear delete candidate to me. ~Amatulić (talk) 23:56, 10 May 2013 (UTC)

I think it would be more productive to rename and combine the two days into one page but if you want to take to DRV be my guest. J04n(talk page) 00:09, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
That's reasonable if both topics are notable. In any case, it's at DRV now. ~Amatulić (talk) 00:22, 11 May 2013 (UTC)

I've been researching references for No Pants Day and discovered that Google has a talk page with six sections for "No Pants Day".  Following up, I discovered that an admin deleted the talk page: [3].  Would you be willing to merge this talk page with the new one?  Thanks, Unscintillating (talk) 22:45, 11 May 2013 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on File:Among the Leaves.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Eeekster (talk) 18:20, 11 May 2013 (UTC)

Deletion of Dimensionaut

Hi, J04n. I noticed you deleted the article page for Dimensionaut. Numerous editors have discussed the page's deletion previously over the past week, and I thought, as a group, we had reached the consensus that all we required in order to preserve the page were a few third-party reviews from well-established sources. I anticipate the publication of such reviews to happen within the next week or so, which leads me to wonder if the Dimensionaut page may be re-established when they are made available as references. In my discussion with Boing! said Zebedee, I asked him to state specifically which criteria the page needed to meet in order to remain: WP:CRYSTAL and WP:NALBUMS were the conditions he listed. When the album has been released and publications from such sources as Rolling Stone and Allmusic are made available, will the Dimensionaut article become suitable enough to exist? Vuzor (talk) 09:33, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

  • Saw this here, so a quick comment from me - I would think the article could be userfied pending the release of the album and until there are more in-depth sources covering it. -- Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 15:56, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
    • Saw this here too. Thought the article couldn't exist until it was released (per WP:CRYSTAL) AND there were third-party, in-depth sources covering it. That's the discussion that was happening on the articles for deletion re: albums/music, anyway. Winkelvi (talk) 04:16, 14 May 2013 (UTC)
      • It could exist in user space for a reasonable length of time, but not as an article -- Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 06:15, 14 May 2013 (UTC)
        • I don't think you've been clear enough to Vuzor about that fact. Reading what he said on the delete page and above here, I believe he still thinks it's going to be an article again very soon. Even before the album is released. Winkelvi (talk) 07:20, 14 May 2013 (UTC)
          • Not necessarily. I don't expect the article to be running until at least both conditions are met - which is only possible after May 20, 2013. I am asking if the article may be online again when both conditions are met. Vuzor (talk) 21:51, 14 May 2013 (UTC)

Tagg Romney AfD

Hey, J04n. I just wanted to let you know that I thought that it was a poorly worded outcome that an administrator would cite an essay (WP:NOTINHERITED) as a potentially controlling authority in contravention to the general notability guidelines per WP:GNG. I would also suggest to you that NOTINHERITED does not state what the "delete" supporters in the AfD said it did; it does not say that if a subject receives in-depth coverage in multiple, independent, reliable sources sufficient to establish notability per GNG, that such notability may be disregarded because the subject only received that depth of coverage because of the subject's relationship to another (presumably, more) notable subject. NOTINHERITED says nothing of the kind; it only says that a non-notable subject is not notable by virtue of its relationship to a notable subject. Once GNG is satisfied (a core Wikipedia guideline), any discussion of applying NOTINHERITED (an essay) should be moot.

Sorry if I sound like I'm venting, but I just had to repeat these points because I think this was one of the two or three most logically confused AfDs in which I have ever participated, and seemed to be colored by some sort of animus toward the subject. Not one of our finer AfD moments. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 13:47, 23 May 2013 (UTC)

Quite honestly, you were lucky to come out with a no consensus as the arguments to keep were really little more than vapid handwaving at notability guidelines. I wish I'd gotten to this AfD sooner. "Notability is not inherited" is a standard by which many, many biographies have been deleted or redirected, when that person's source coverage stems exclusively from their connection to an actually-notable person or group. Again, Al Gore III and Marcus Bachmann. The ideal of "not inherited" is part of the larger Arguments to Avoid essay, which is a much-used and much-cited in years' worth of of deletion discussions. Obviously it can be set aside if a consensus of editors deem it a particular topic, but IMO the onus is on them to explain why, and I never saw a compelling reason to excuse Tagg Romney from it. As this closed as a NC I will wait and see what, if anything, develops regarding the subject's notability independent of his father. If nothing does develop, I will bring this back to AfD in several months' time. Tarc (talk) 14:35, 23 May 2013 (UTC)
"[Y]ou were lucky to come out with a no consensus?" Tarc, I don't believe in taunting the pitbull, but by suggesting that I was "lucky," you seem to suggest that I have some sort of vested interest in the AfD outcome. I did not, and I do not. I arrived at this AfD fully expecting to !vote "delete," and then I read the footnoted sources. As I said in the AfD, I couldn't give a rat's backside about Tagg Romney or his father, but I regularly participate in AfDs and work for consistent outcomes across the board, regardless of the subject's ideology, partisan affiliation, religion, nationality, ethnicity, etc., and regardless of whether it's someone I personally detest or find admirable. Here's the bottom line: (1) several of the "delete" !voters repeatedly misrepresented what the NOTINHERITED essay actually says; and (2) essays, regardless of their merits, do not trump policy and guidelines. Satisfying the GNG general notability guidelines trumps the concerns raised by NOTINHERITED every time. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 22:05, 26 May 2013 (UTC)
"Satisfying the GNG general notability guidelines trumps the concerns raised by NOTINHERITED every time" is a falsehood that I quite clearly debunked by pointing to the result at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Marcus Bachmann. You should rethink future participation in XfDs if you are going to enter them with wrong notions of notability. Again, you got lucky, in that this particular AfD didn't get more eyes on it. The consensus of the discussion was read correctly, but the consensus itself was not in line with past precedent. And that, as they say, is the proverbial "last word". Tarc (talk) 00:07, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
Well I put a good deal of thought into this close and the fact that Tarc's point of the subject not actually doing anything was a big part of my decision. I would not be offended in any way if this was sent to DRV. J04n(talk page) 14:59, 23 May 2013 (UTC)
While I wish it went differently, I don't see anything wrong with your closing rationale itself. If you have ever spent time in DRV-land, you'd know that I am a vociferous proponent of admin discretion when closing XfDs; my main line of argument is usually "I disagree is not a valid DRV filing reason", so I'd be a filthy hypocrite if I filed one on those grounds. :) Tarc (talk) 15:03, 23 May 2013 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sir Cecil Bisshopp, 10th Baronet

Hello there. Despite the relative unanimity of the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sir Cecil Bisshopp, 10th Baronet several points were raised concerning the basis for notability and in my view weren't resolved during the discussion. I would have appreciated it if your close addressed them (I'm assuming that notability was the basis of your close). Would you be willing to expand on your reasoning? Thanks, Mackensen (talk) 23:18, 28 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi. When closing AfD's it is the admin's job to read consensus of the discussion. As long as the consensus does not violate any of the core content policies (verifiability, no original research or synthesis, neutral point of view, copyright, and biographies of living persons) it should be adhered to and there was no question of any of these policies. The folks that offered opinions to keep are all in good standing and there was no hint of COI or socks and the discussion was open for two weeks. There was no other way to close this. J04n(talk page) 00:50, 29 May 2013 (UTC)
Beg pardon, but it's possible to close against a near unanimous discussion if everyone in that discussion ignored policy or misapplied. I've done it myself on several occasions, though I grant it's not done lightly. The author of the article is probably a member of the family pushing this and other articles about his family members, which is a matter of concern. I'll probably revisit this in six months and see if anyone has come to their senses. Cheers, Mackensen (talk) 01:02, 29 May 2013 (UTC)

Shang Yunxiang

I'm the creator of a page you deleted ('userfied') - Shang Yunxiang. You seemed to have ignored the discussion, which was still in progress. Comments called for more citations and userfication of the text. Both those things were added, but the people who commented before had no time to see the changes before you eliminated the page. I wish to request that you bring the page back. If you check it out thoroughly you will see it's up to standard. Note that the page includes references to quite a few books that mention the person being discussed, and that these references are even available on Google Books. Jonathan.bluestein (talk) 21:10, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi, the page wasn't deleted, it was just moved out of the main encyclopedia. It is now at User:Jonathan.bluestein/Shang Yunxiang where you and anyone else can make all of the improvements necessary. J04n(talk page) 21:17, 31 May 2013 (UTC)
Didn't you read my message? Firstly, I know it was moved and not deleted. Secondly, you ignored what I wrote about the delete discussion that was still in progress. Thirdly, the 'necessary improvements' were made!... Please, I ask of you to re-read the delete discussion, inspect the page properly, and explain whether you then still consider something 'to be missing'. If not, I wish to request that you bring back the page. Otherwise, do specify what exactly it is that you think should be added, because I sincerely believe there was enough reference material, and that the page was decent and worthy. Jonathan.bluestein (talk) 00:07, 1 June 2013 (UTC)
OK, the debate has been relisted and the page restored. J04n(talk page) 00:05, 1 June 2013 (UTC)

I know I'm way to late on this topic but I think you was to quick to delete this article. Thanks! GiantSnowman 16:23, 5 June 2013 (UTC)

Your close here doesn't make sense to me.  My concern is that your close was a delete and redirect rather than redirect without deletion.  My motivation here is that I don't like to see the work-product of volunteers deleted unnecessarily.  I also sense a technical problem—if this content is merged from a user page, how does the attribution history get back into main space?  I also believe that this deletion was supported neither by policy/guidelines nor the consensus of the AfD.  Please let me know if you have questions.  Thanks, Unscintillating (talk) 04:34, 6 June 2013 (UTC)

You make a good point about the article's history, I've restored it. If anyone is willing to do the merge or create a list of residence halls, as you suggested, they are free to do so. J04n(talk page) 20:09, 6 June 2013 (UTC)
I appreciate that you have responded to my concern.  Thank you, Unscintillating (talk) 03:23, 10 June 2013 (UTC)

Dimensionaut

If you have the time, I would appreciate your opinion as a member of WP:Album in regard to an editing and content dispute currently taking place at Dimensionaut. The section in dispute is "Critical Reception". An editor who typically edits literary and biography articles has come along and claimed "we need consensus before making changes", completely reverting the changes I made to that section. My changes were well thought out and based on what I've learned by looking at other music album articles of the same type as well as the MOS for music album articles. It also appears to me that the original editor of the article is starting to have ownership issues. So much peacocking and puffery has come out of his editing of not just the article mentioned above, but all articles relating to the band and band members that I continue to seriously question if there isn't COI going on. At the very least, his editing strongly suggests a lack of NPOV. I've tried to balance the critical reception section out with direct quotes from a completely negative review as well as a negative comment from a reviewer regarding one song on the album. Prior to that, the section was fat with direct quotes from positive and glowing reviews.

I am not interested in edit warring over this (or any) article, but I feel like I'm banging my head against a wall to get the original article editor and the editor claiming "there's no consensus and that's why I'm justified in reverting you" to keep out the POV and undue weight out of the article. This is a new article about a brand new album released only last week. It hasn't even made the Billboard 200. It's been out for two weeks in the UK and hasn't made any charts there, either. My fear is the original editor is turning the critical reception section into promotion for the band.

I always hesitate to come crying to anyone, especially an administrator, about article disputes. But, I'm feeling kind of alone in this and would really appreciate new eyes from someone familiar with album articles as well as a reality check for me. I'm okay if what you see and have to say doesn't favor my opinions. I just want some unemotional input from a knowledgeable administrator. Thanks. -- Winkelvi 01:58, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

The Wikipedia Library now offering accounts from Cochrane Collaboration (sign up!)

Cochrane Collaboration is an independent medical nonprofit organization consisting of over 28,000 volunteers in more than 100 countries. The collaboration was formed to organize medical scholarship in a systematic way in the interests of evidence-based research: the group conducts systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials of health-care interventions, which it then publishes in the Cochrane Library.

Cochrane has generously agreed to give free, full-access accounts to 100 medical editors. Individual access would otherwise cost between $300 and $800 per account. Thank you Cochrane!

If you are stil active as a medical editor, come and sign up :)

WikiCup 2013 June newsletter

We are down to our final 16: the 2013 semi-finals are upon us. A score of 321 was required to survive round 3, further cementing this as the most competitive WikiCup yet; round 3 was survived in 2012 with 243 points, in 2011 with 76 points and in 2010 with 250 points. The change may in part be to do with the fact that more articles are now awarded bonus points, in addition to more competitive play. Reaching the final has, in the past, required 573 points (2012, a 135% increase on the score needed to reach round 4), 150 points (2011, a 97% increase) and 417 points (2010, a 72% increase). This round has seen over a third of participants claiming points for featured articles (with seven users claiming for multiple featured articles) and most users have also gained bonus points. However, the majority of points continue to come from good articles, followed by did you know articles. In this round, every content type was utilised by at least one user, proving that the WikiCup brings together content contributors from all corners of the project.

Round 3 saw a number of contributions of note. Idaho Figureskatingfan (submissions) claimed the first featured topic points in this year's competition for her excellent work on topics related to Maya Angelou, the noted American author and poet. We have also continued to see high-importance articles improved as part of the competition: Wyoming Ealdgyth (submissions) was awarded a thoroughly well-earned 560 points for her featured article Middle Ages and 102 points for her good article Battle of Hastings. Good articles James Chadwick and Stanislaw Ulam netted Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions) 102 and 72 points respectively, while 72 points were awarded to Poland Piotrus (submissions) for each of Władysław Sikorski and Emilia Plater, both recently promoted to good article status. Collaborative efforts between WikiCup participants have continued, with, for example, New South Wales Casliber (submissions) and Canada Sasata (submissions) being awarded 180 points each for their featured article on Boletus luridus.

A rules reminder: content promoted between rounds can be claimed in the round after the break, but not the round before. The case in point is content promoted on the 29/30 June, which may be claimed in this round. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. We are currently seeing concern about the amount of time people have to wait for reviews, especially at GAC- if you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to reduce the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Francis E. Dec

Hello, J04n. I noticed you recently closed a deletion discussion on the above-noted article as "delete". I was not a party to the debate, and wasn't even aware of the article or its subject until now, but I'm a bit confused by your decision. Certainly most of the participants in the discussion did indeed argue for deletion on the grounds of lack of notability and reliable sources, though I don't see how these arguments are supportable by the evidence. If User:Seduisant/SandboxDec is a correct copy of the article, then I see numerous secondary sources which serve to establish notability. Dec appears to be the primary subject of a chapter in a 1994 book by Donna Kossy, a recognized authority on eccentric individuals. The publisher is independent of the author, and both the publisher and author are independent of the subject. Dec is also the subject of a 1999 biographical stage play which was reviewed at least four times in the New York press, including The Village Voice. Dec's work has been published by Robert Crumb, and reviewed or examined in The Big Takeover and the official journal of the AIGA. I think that any two of these alone would be sufficient to pass WP:GNG. Is it possible you and the participants in the deletion debate overlooked these sources, buried as they were amongst a bunch of primary and self-published ones? If so, could I ask that you revise your decision and restore the article? It would then be possible to pare it down such that it covers only those aspects of the man's life and work which have attracted sufficient scholarly and press coverage. —Psychonaut (talk) 08:18, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

Since I did not hear from you I have opened a request for deletion review. You are of course welcome to participate there. —Psychonaut (talk) 10:46, 21 July 2013 (UTC)

WikiCup 2013 July newsletter

We're halfway through this year's penultimate round, and the competition is moving along well. Pool A's Canada Sasata (submissions) currently leads overall, while Pool B's Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) is second. Both leaders are WikiCup veterans, and both have already scored over 600 points this month. If the round were to end today, London Miyagawa (submissions), with 274 points, would be the lowest-scoring participant to make it through. This indicates that participants will need a score comparable to last year's (573, the highest ever) to qualify for the final. The high scores this year are a testament both to the quality of participants and to the increased focus on significant content (eligible for bonus points) in this year's competition. So far this round, both Sasata and Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) have made up over half of their score through bonus points, with, for example, high importance FA koala earning Sasata a total of 440 points (from a multiplier of 4.4) and high-importance GA sea earning Cwmhiraeth a total of 216 points (from a multiplier of 7.2). Other articles on important topics submitted this round include a featured article on the Norman conquest of England by Wyoming Ealdgyth (submissions), and good articles on Nobel laureate in literature Henryk Sienkiewicz, Nobel laureate in physics Hans Bethe, and the noted Japanese aircraft carrier Hiryū. These articles are by Poland Piotrus (submissions), Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions) and Sturmvogel_66 respectively.

Other than that, there is not much to report! Recreation of a deleted page

Hi, In the past (2011) you have deleted a page about Basic4android (programming language for native Android apps). The reason was zero notability. At that time Basic4android was indeed a new programming language. Two years later there are many articles in popular magazines about Basic4android (PC PRO, Nuts & Volts and others). There are also many online reviews and a commercial book (written by an independent author). Basic4android community includes about 40k developers which makes it the most popular alternative programming language for Android.

I would like to recreate the page and of course add the references. The system suggested that I first contact you.

Thanks, Doron Barzilay Doron17 (talk) 16:28, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

The article B.C. Rich Mockingbird has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

A poorly written, poorly sourced article.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. I dream of horses If you reply here, please leave me a {{Talkback}} message on my talk page. @ 07:41, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Originally (Art Blakey album).jpg.

WikiCup 2013 August newsletter

This year's final is upon us. Our final eight, in order of last round's score, are:

  1. Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer who has contributed on topics of military history and physics, including a number of high-importance topics. Good articles have made up the bulk of his points, but he has also scored a great deal of bonus points. He has the second highest score overall so far, with more than 3000 points accumulated.
  2. New South Wales Casliber (submissions), another WikiCup veteran who reached the finals in 2012, 2011 and 2010. He writes on a variety of topics including botany, mycology and astronomy, and has claimed the highest or joint highest number of featured articles every round so far this year. He has the third highest score overall, with just under 3000 points accumulated.
  3. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), 2012 WikiCup champion, who writes mostly on marine biology. She has also contributed to high-importance topics, seeing huge numbers of bonus points for high-importance featured and good articles. Previous rounds have seen her scoring the most bonus points, with scoring spread across did you knows, good articles and featured articles.
  4. Canada Sasata (submissions), a WikiCup veteran who finished in second place in 2012, and competed as early as 2009. He writes articles on biology, especially mycology, and has scored highly for a number of collaborations at featured article candidates.
  5. Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), the winner of the 2010 competition. His contributions mostly concern Naval history, and he has scored a very large number of points for good articles and good article reviews in every round. He is the highest scorer overall this year, with over 3500 points in total.
  6. Wyoming Ealdgyth (submissions), who is competing in the WikiCup for the second time, though this will be her first time in the final. A regular at FAC, she is mostly interested in British medieval history, and has scored very highly for some top-importance featured articles on the topic.
  7. London Miyagawa (submissions), a finalist in 2012 and 2011. He writes on a broad variety of topics, with many of this year's points coming from good articles about Star Trek. Good articles make up the bulk of his points, and he had the most good articles back in round 2; he was also the highest scorer for DYK in rounds 1 and 2.
  8. Scotland Adam Cuerden (submissions) has previously been involved with the WikiCup, but hasn't participated for a number of years. He scores mostly from restoration work leading to featured picture credits, but has also done some article writing and reviewing.

We say goodbye to eight great participants who did not qualify for the final: Poland Piotrus (submissions), Idaho Figureskatingfan (submissions), Ohio ThaddeusB (submissions), Michigan Dana boomer (submissions), Prince Edward Island Status (submissions), United States Ed! (submissions), Florida 12george1 (submissions), England Calvin999 (submissions). Having made it to this stage is still an excellent achievement, and you can leave with your heads held high. We hope to see you all again next year. Signups are now open for the 2014 WikiCup, which will begin on 1 January. All Wikipedians, whatever their interest or level of experience, are warmly invited to participate in next year's competition.

This last month has seen some incredible contributions; for instance, Cwmhiraeth's Starfish and Ealdgyth's Battle of Hastings—two highly important, highly viewed pages—made it to featured article status. It would be all too easy to focus solely on these stunning achievements at the expense of those participants working in lower-scoring areas, when in fact all WikiCup participants are doing excellent work. A mention of everything done is impossible, but here are a few: Last round saw the completion of several good topics (on the 1958, 1959 and 1962 Atlantic hurricane seasons) to which 12george1 had contributed. Calvin999 saw "S&M" (song), on which he has been working for several years, through to featured article status on its tenth try. Figureskatingfan continued towards her goal of a broad featured/good topic on Maya Angelou, with two featured and four good articles. ThaddeusB contributed significantly to over 20 articles which appeared on the main page's "in the news" section. Adam Cuerden continued to restore a large number of historical images, resulting in over a dozen FP credits this round alone. The WikiCup is not just about top-importance featured articles, and the work of all of these users is worthy of commendation.

Finally, the usual notices: If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to reduce the review backlogs! WikiCup 2013 September newsletter

In 30 days, we will know the identity of our 2013 WikiCup champion. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) currently leads; if that lead is held, she will become the first person to have won the WikiCup twice. Canada Sasata (submissions), Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions)—who has never participated in the competition before—and New South Wales Casliber (submissions) follow. The majority of points in this round have come from a mix of good articles and bonus points. This final round is seeing contributions to a number of highly important topics; recent submissions include Phoenix (constellation) (FA by Casliber), Ernest Lawrence (GA by Hawkeye7), Pinniped, and red fox (both GAs by Sasata).

The did you know (DYK) eligibility criteria have recently changed, meaning that newly passed good articles are accepted as "new" for did you know purposes. However, in the interests of not changing the WikiCup rules mid-competition, please note that only articles eligible for DYK under the old system (that is, newly created articles or 5x expansions) will be eligible for points in this year's WikiCup. We do, however, have time to discuss how this new system will work for next year's competition; a discussion will be opened in due course. On that note, thoughts are welcome on changes you'd like to see for next year. What worked? What didn't work? What would you like to see more of? What would you like to see less of? All Wikipedians, new or old, are also warmly invited to sign up for the 2014 WikiCup.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to reduce the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Major concerns about an AfD you closed

You closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/2013 Mother's Day Parade shooting back in May, and I have major reservations about your decision. While the article is, of course, deleted, an editor moved it to userspace and I was able to read it here: User:Cardamon/2013 Mother's Day Parade shooting. If the article at the time of AfD looked anything like the draft I linked to, you made a huge error of judgement. Frankly, I think you crossed several lines on this decision, when there was clearly no consensus either way. I'm think this one belongs at deletion review, but I'm notifying you first as Deletion review instructs. Ego White Tray (talk) 05:03, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

An editor has asked for a deletion review of 2013 Mother's Day Parade shooting. Because you closed the deletion discussion for this page, speedily deleted it, or otherwise were interested in the page, you might want to participate in the deletion review. Prizes will be handed out in the coming weeks. Please be patient!

Congratulations to everyone who has been successful in this year's WikiCup, whether you made it to the final rounds or not, and a particular congratulations to the newcomers to the WikiCup who have achieved this year. Thanks to all who have taken part and helped out with the competition. While it has been an excellent year, errors have opened up the judges' eyes to the need for a third judge, and it is with pleasure that we announce that experienced WikiCup participant Miyagawa will be acting as a judge from now on. We hope you will all join us in welcoming him to the team.

Next year's competition begins on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; it is open to all Wikipedians, new and old. Brainstorming and discussion remains open for how next year's competition will work, and straw polls will be opened by the judges soon. Those interested in friendly competition may also like to keep an eye on the stub contest, being organised by Casliber. The WikiCup judges will be back in touch over the coming months, and we hope to see you all in the 2014 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! I have decided to put on a mini-contest within the November 2013 monthly disambiguation contest, on Saturday, November 23 (UTC). I will personally give a $20 Amazon.com gift card to the disambiguator who fixes the most links on that server-day (see the project page for details on scoring points). Since we are not geared up to do an automated count for that day, at 00:00, 23 November 2013 (UTC) (which is 7:00 PM on November 22, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the project page leaderboard. I will presume that anyone who is not already listed on the leaderboard has precisely nine edits. At 01:00, 24 November 2013 (UTC) (8:00 PM on November 23, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the leaderboard at that time (the extra hour is to give the board time to update), and I will determine from that who our winner is. I will credit links fixed by turning a WP:DABCONCEPT page into an article, but you'll have to let me know me that you did so. Here's to a fun contest. Note that according to the Daily Disambig, we currently have under 256,000 disambiguation links to be fixed. If everyone in the disambiguation link fixers category were to fix 500 links, we would have them all done - so aim high! Cheers! bd2412 T 02:31, 18 November 2013 (UTC)
