TV episode summaries

Regarding this post at User talk:GLCFan1, the instructions for {{Episode list}} say that the ShortSummary field should contain a "short 100–300 word summary of the episode". Although not stated, the 300 word figure is based on a 1 hour episode so you'd expect shorter summaries for shorter episodes. WP:TVPLOT specifies other lengths for episode articles. Hope this helps. -- AussieLegend () 12:58, 10 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

DYK nomination of Colorado State Highway 82

Hello! Your submission of Colorado State Highway 82 at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! MelanieN (talk) 21:06, 14 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Feel free to ask for someone else to look at it. I had already posted my comments about the article aside from the time issue, and I have now posted to say that I am fine with someone else evaluating the time frame. --MelanieN (talk) 22:23, 14 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
And BTW, if turns out that the time period is not strictly enforced, this becomes yet another example of what a foolish and futile rule QPQ is. QPQ requires a person to review a DYK submission, even though they are not familiar with all the ins and outs of DYK practice - how sometimes a requirement may not be strictly enforced, and other times there may turn out to be a whole bunch of additional "secret" requirements like Wikipedia:Did you know/Supplementary guidelines (when I got those thrown at me back in May I swore I would never nominate another DYK again!) Do you feel that QPQ has value? --MelanieN (talk) 22:31, 14 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your response. No problem, you haven't come on strong; I am not terribly familiar with DYK procedure, especially the "unwritten" rules, and I may well have gotten this wrong. I've been following with interest this discussion: Wikipedia talk:Did you know#Let's extend the 5 day viability period to 10 days. I'm waiting to see if another user agrees that your 10-day submission is OK; if so, I will post support to that discussion (to expand from 5 days to 10) on the grounds that the deadline already is 10 days, but it just doesn't say so. (No comment on the QPQ rule, huh? ;-D ) --MelanieN (talk) 02:48, 15 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I see that no one has responded at the nomination. Please feel free to invite someone familiar with the guidelines to come and take a look at it. --MelanieN (talk) 02:58, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Daniel, I'm reviewing this right now. Just to avoid any objections, please stick an inline citation after that two-sentence paragraph that beings the section of "Route Description". Everything else looks sourced. Give me some time to read through all this. — Maile (talk) 20:27, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • My apologies for the misunderstanding. I do blame QPQ, which results in submissions being reviewed by people who are not familiar with all the unwritten rules and interpretations. --MelanieN (talk) 14:27, 18 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your understanding. I assumed the rule would be strictly enforced because in my experience other requirements, particularly the requirement for sourcing, are enforced to the letter and even beyond the letter of the published rules. In two out of my last three DYK nominations, the reviewers have insisted that every sentence, and sometimes even parts of sentences, be supported by an inline citation - and when I questioned this pointing to the "at least one citation per paragraph" guideline, the reviewer said "certain rules are applied stricter than for Good Articles actually." You see why a less-experienced DYK reviewer can find it confusing! --MelanieN (talk) 15:07, 18 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Very nice work there Daniel Case. I think a DYK is in order, hmmm? I think we could share it, does that sound fair? Do you want to do it or shall I? (I'd rather you did if you're up for it.) Herostratus (talk) 03:29, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Also... wow, 100,000 edits. You have a very impressive resume (and I'm pretty we've interacted before, but I have a terrible memory for names -- a blessing sometimes, but mostly a curse -- and I can't recall the circumstances). Anyway, FWIW you are an Auspicious Looshpah (if you don't mind my saying so), or in more formal terms:

Followup RFC to WP:RFC/AAT now in community feedback phase

Hello. As a participant in Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Abortion article titles, you may wish to register an opinion on its followup RFC, Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Abortion advocacy movement coverage, which is now in its community feedback phase. Please note that WP:RFC/AAMC is not simply a repeat of WP:RFC/AAT, and is attempting to achieve better results by asking a more narrowly-focused, policy-based question of the community. Assumptions based on the previous RFC should be discarded before participation, particularly the assumption that Wikipedia has or inherently needs to have articles covering generalized perspective on each side of abortion advocacy, and that what we are trying to do is come up with labels for that. Thanks! —chaos5023 20:27, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

They got blocked for these edits? Is there a long-term issue that I'm not aware of? --Bongwarrior (talk) 18:25, 25 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

TheFarix (correctly) didn't even warn the user for those edits, and didn't report the user to AIV. Unsourced good-faith edits aren't vandalism, and the IPs most recent warning was a level 2, two days ago. "Genre-warring" sounds like a guess to me. --Bongwarrior (talk) 18:40, 25 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello!

Can you take a look at this user please? I blocked him before because of the username, I googled it earlier after he was reported at AIV and found it to be the name of a business http://www.pseudosound.net/.

I blocked him because even though he's not made any promotional edits yet, I thought simply the name is in breach of WP:CORPNAME given that the whole username is the business name. To quote WP:CORPNAME "The following types of usernames are not permitted because they are considered promotional: Usernames that unambiguously consist of a name of a company, group, institution or product (e.g. AlexTownWidgets, MyWidgetsUSA.com, TrammelMuseumofArt)."

However, user is now asking that my block is reviewed. If you're on and you get a sec can you please take a look? If I'm wrong feel free to undo my block :)--5 albert square (talk) 00:18, 31 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Discussions concerning non-tropical cyclones

Since you've been involved with articles on non-tropical cyclones in the past, I thought this might be a relevant area for you to give some input. At the moment, there is discussion going on about whether we should adopt The Weather Channel's new procedure of using names for winter storms that will have a significant impact. There are two discussions going on: an AFD of the article about the current winter storm season and a proposal to not use TWC's naming system as the title for an ongoing storm. Out of full disclosure, I've started both of those discussions, and while I have my own opinions, I wanted to get fresh opinions from editors who, like me, have a history of editing similar articles in the past. Question

SO whats the consensus on accounts being created purely for afd voting. I don't want to ABF but I am involved in a AFD discussion and I've seen the author of the article refactor a comment (lvl 1 warning) and also a completely brand new account that has only contributed at that article and the AFD so basically a SPA or possibly a sock/meat puppet. There's not enough to make an accusation but is there a good way to go about it or just let it play out? Just figured since your an admin and I see you on the vandal board often enough you may have good suggestions for a easy way forward. Hello Daniel

I'm going to ask you to review this block I just made, the reason I'm asking for it to be checked is because it is outside our normal turnaround of the account being used in the last 2-3 weeks.

I blocked the account because it could be impersonating a famous person, namely Lorraine Newman, there also seems to be a bit of a conflict of interest involved. I've had a look at the talk page and really there's nothing on there to convince me that they are Lorraine Newman, although they do claim this on the user talk page. Lorraine Newman is one of the producers for EastEnders and they do discuss the soap on her talk page but there's nothing there that you can't find doing a general Google search. That's why I'm slightly suspicious.

Please note that this wasn't reported to WP:UAA, I actually came across this by accident when I was checking something on the EastEnders page. I noticed a page had been created for the producer and it was when I was looking at the history to see if it could be nominated for anything I noticed that a Lorraine Newman had edited it.

I can't see anything on the page to say that Wikipedia have confirmation that this person is indeed Lorraine Newman. Like I say I know we normally assume an account is abandoned if the person hasn't edited in 2-3 weeks, but I've made an exception in this case just in case this is someone being impersonated.

Can you please take a look?--5 albert square (talk) 03:02, 24 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. IPBE

Hey there,

I'm a little worried that you may be granting IPBE quite a bit too liberally; in particular, your recent grants to User:Nahald and User:Vi2 really don't seem to have received anywhere near enough scrutiny. While the latter is dubious, the former is outright wrong – you granted an IPBE to an editor that specifically requested it to edit through an open proxy (which is only allowable under very rare and exacting conditions) without so much as asking him what the block message was and what the blocked IP might have been.

Please don't grant IPBE without having examined the underlying block carefully. In general, administrators should only grant the flag without consulting a checkuser in cases which are extremely clear, which neither of those were.

Have a very merry holiday season. — Coren (talk) 18:17, 25 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Richard Austin House

Hi Daniel, I've just reviewed the DYK for Richard Austin House - well done on yet another comprehensive, informative article. I've marked it as good to go. A couple of very minor things for you to look at please: 'Storey' seems to change from American 'story/stories' to English spelling 'storey' in the first paragraph of Exterior? One line I think needs slight amendment, under Buildings and grounds, first para, third line reads: "East, across Bradshaw, are 20th-century house." - should this be houses? As I wasn't 100% sure, I'll leave you to make the changes (if you agree, of course!). I had to mark it AGF as I couldn't access the refs - but it is covered in the PDF anyway. SagaciousPhil - Chat 14:49, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Accusations of sockerry

Hi Daniel, I've just read your comments at User talk:Martin911 and I'm a little bit disappointed with your implied accusations against me. Let me make my position clear: I edited (not much actually) as an ip for a long time prior to signing up last year. My use of WP is mainly as an information resouce. I'm quite familiar with User:HighKing and issues related to his editing, due to my interest in Irish and British affairs. I can state categorically that I'm not martin911, nor Hackneyhound, nor anyone else, but if you think differently then you obviously know what you can about it. Now to the heart of the matter. Why is it when someone like me makes a complaint, none of the admins are interested in it, but instead they examine in great detail the probity of the user making the complaint? Other than quoting that idiotic boomerang "policy", is there some other reason why you (the admins) can't seem to get to grips with these types of issue generally - more specifically in the case of HighKing - but find it remarkably easy to go off at a tangent in pursuit of the complainant? Since only limited admin action has been taken previously, we have the unfortunate situation of HighKing running out of control across Wikipedia. Please address the issue at hand; look at what this user has been doing; look at the extensive history of disruption, and try to do something about it. Edit warring on Bill Biggart

Hi. Another editor who does not seem to understand that you cannot add material to an article that has nothing to do with that article's subject got into a prolonged discussion with me in which he argued why the material should be included for "context". In the article on Bill Biggart, whose notability is that was the only photojournalist killed while covering the 9/11 attacks, the other editor, Crtew, wants to include a list of all media-related deaths (not in the 9/11 article or a related 9/11 death list article, but in the article of just one of the victimn, Bill Biggart), because he argues, the passage that clearly states that Biggart was the only photojournalist killed while covering the event creates the false perception on the part of readers that Biggart was the only "media-related death" during the attacks. I tried to explain to him that this wrong, but he wouldn't budge. He agreed to a Third Opinion, so I called for one, and the person responding to provide a Third Opinion obviously agreed with me that that material does belong in the Biggart article. Nonetheless, Crtew reverted the article anyway, and is has now tried to start another discussion on the same issue further down on the talk page, completely ignoring Third Opinion, and the two other editors who have disagreed with him, which I believe is a blockable offense. Even if he wants to start a consensus discussion in order to open the matter up to more than three people, then he's still reverting during a discussion, which is definitely a blockable offense. When I criticize him for this, he accused me of being "disrespectful", and lobbing personal attacks against me by saying, " seriously cannot believe you are an administrator and you treat people like this", as if he's some kind of victim for merely being criticized for violating policy. I've warned him that if he does this again, he will be blocked from editing, but I need an uninvolved admin to keep an eye on him and do the blocking if it comes to that. If you could also warn him that he is indeed engaging in blockable behavior so that we can avoid actually blocking him, that would be even better. Please advise. Thanks. Nightscream (talk) 19:36, 6 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Block

Hey, I've been blocked for 24 hours for edit warring and appealed to it many times. I don't think the admins who declined my requests actually read my arguments. Blocking someone should be a last resort measure and is something that should be done only if there is clear evidence of continuous violation of policies and all alternatives have failed, like appropriate warnings. Blocks are extremely discouraging to contributors. Please, review my block process because I don't think it was justified. And please, be cautious when blocking someone, you may scare potentially valuable contributors away. --Hugo Spinelli (talk) 19:56, 6 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Unblock for discussion

Hi Daniel. I'd appreciate your input on User:Wkcda's current unblock request. The proposed new username ("Scmswk") technically falls within the username requirements, and since the username is the only reason for the block, that ought to be sufficient. However, although it's not as blatant as WKCAD (Wext Kowloon Cultural District Association), it still looks to me as though it violates the spirit, if not the letter, of WP:UN - SCMS is a pretty common acronym for "Supply chain management service" and WK for West Kowloon is fairly obvious. I'd be grateful for your thoughts on this; whilst I can't see a username violation (there's no entity using the acronym SCMSWK, as far as I can tell from Google), something about it just doesn't sit right. re City of Maroondah unblock

This user, whom you blocked for name reasons a year and a half or so ago, has requested to unblocked to change her name to "Sue at Maroondah." I am inclined to allow it as it fits the "Mark at Alcoa" exception. Are you OK with this? Daniel Case (talk) 13:44, 15 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've no objections, but I'll respectfully defer to your judgment about that. — Cirt (talk) 22:18, 15 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Daniel, you suggested that a "player profile" section be created for the article. I tried, but I feel like I'm nowhere...in my opinion it looks like a piece of garbage. Thoughts? Go Phightins! 02:04, 17 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Talk page harassment

Can you please take a look at this and give me your opinion on what I can do about this person? He has been regularly stalking my alternate talk page because the main talk page is protected. His comments border on the psychopathic, and I am just plain sick and tired of reading his vile drivel. Would it be worthwhile to bring this up at AN/I? I would really like to know what you think. Thanks! ---The Old JacobiteThe '45 17:38, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Translation English to French - text already translated, requesting assistance to incorporate into French Wikipedia

Good Greetings - I created the article Olav Zipser and have had the content professionally translated into French. I personally do not speak French and so incorporating the translated text into the French Wikipedia is challenging. Please could I request you to assist with incorporating the translated text into the French Wikipedia and making all of the relevant links etc... not sure how best to go about this so asking for assistance of active Wikipedians I can find who are listed on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Translators_available

On communication from you I can email you the word document of the translation which has been completed per section.

Many thanks in advance for your assistance Quadtripplea (talk) 11:17, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

DYK nomination of Old Chappaqua Historic District

Hello! Your submission of Old Chappaqua Historic District at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! NinaGreen (talk) 02:05, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Daniel! Would you mind reconsidering your block of this editor? Understandably, you weren't aware that she has requested a username change, concerning which she's been asked a question about using her real name. As one might imagine, responding to this is rather difficult when blocked. Thanks, Tyrol5 [Talk] 20:49, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Disregard the above. The rename has gone through and the editor has been unblocked. Apologies for the nuisance. Tyrol5 [Talk] 23:18, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

James Hall Office

Hi Daniel, I've just reviewed the DYK nomination for James Hall Office; it doesn't affect the DYK but something doesn't seem quite right to me with the formatting of ref #6 to ACME Laboratories? Sorry to have troubled you if it is just me having a stupid head on today! I have to say I always find reviewing your articles interesting - it's nice to come across DYK nominations that are for articles with some substance. SagaciousPhil - Chat 11:46, 6 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for looking at it. I played around with the ref again this morning and think it may be sorted? I have no idea what eventually fixed it as I tried various permutations without success and then all of a sudden, it looked correct. I sincerely hope I haven't broken something in the process and apologise profusely if I'm just giving you additional work/hassle. If you wouldn't mind, it would definitely be best if you could check it still points to the right map, please? SagaciousPhil - Chat 08:24, 7 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Could you take a look at my FACs

My friend, User:DavidinNJ and I nominated Alcohol laws of New Jersey for Featured Article Status back in February. The nomination has been slow. As I esteem your opinions and work in the past, would it be possible for you to take a look at the article and perhaps consider offering support to its FA candidacy, located here: Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Alcohol laws of New Jersey/archive1? I appreciate your time and attention to this cause.--ColonelHenry (talk) 16:23, 6 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You are listed as an actively involved adminiatrator at Wikipedia:Did you know#Administrators. Error in the case of User talk:Frank20041

Daniel: I see that you reviewed the case of User talk:Frank20041 in regard to an unblock. You made a specific factual error that I believe may have lead to an incorrect decision.

On his page, you stated that "someone with the Checkuser authority (which I don't have) thinks" that he was a sock. That is not the case. I was the person who suggested he might be a sock of a user named Voidz, and in that sock investigation, not only was Frank20041 not investigated in Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Papisjap, but Voidz was found not to be part of the sock crew at hand. (Additionally, I did not notify User talk:Frank20041 that I had mentioned his name in the investigation, which I now realize was an error; he had no opportunity to defend himself in an investigation that he was unaware existed.

I ask that you review your decline to unblock in this light. --Nat Gertler (talk) 17:00, 19 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your attentiveness in that. --Nat Gertler (talk) 17:18, 19 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
