Question

What the hell image CAN I put on my userbox? I took the image you just talked to me about from the film. You aren't making sense, man? What the hell CAN I freaking do? - Dpm12 1 April 2011 2:51 PM PDT.

  • Are you aware of Commons? http://commons.wikimedia.org/. Any image on Commons has a license compatible with using it on a userbox. Taking the image from the film doesn't transfer copyrights from the makers of the film to you. Simply because you're taking a screen capture doesn't make you the owner of it. The makers of the film retain copyrights. Therefore, ANY screen cap you take of the film will be copyrighted. Anything copyright can NOT be in a userbox. --Hammersoft (talk) 03:11, 2 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

File:Seal of Minnesota.svg

The file was incorrectly licensed as PD-MinnesotaGov, and several files with that license were deleted, However, it was overlooked that the Seal is PD under US federal law, because it was adopted in 1861, when the current age limit is January 1, 1923. This particular version was also independently drawn by a User on Commons, and he released it as PD. The file is allowed on Commons, this was a misunderstanding. If you can please move it back to Commons, I would appreciate it. Fry1989 (talk) 19:10, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • According to Seal of Minnesota, "In 1983, the legislature altered the seal further". Unless the additions/modifications made to the seal were not sufficiently creative on their own to attract copyright, then the seal is in fact copyrighted by default. Therefore, barring a release of rights by the State of Minnesota, it must remain tagged as non-free. --Hammersoft (talk) 13:33, 5 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks and does this work?

First, thank you for taking the time to give me some guidance the other day. I have managed to get the images I used in the 3DiTeams article released to CC 3.0 on the lab site. There is another that is not properly attributed that I need to change as well. What is the best way to change the tags? Thanks! --Gene Hobbs (talk) 15:58, 5 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • First, File:Anesthesia_patient_simulator.jpg is on Commons, and appears to be appropriately tagged, as it comes from a .gov site and not attributed to an outside entity. Thus, it's a federal work most likely from the National Institutes of Health. PD is appropriate, as federal works of the U.S. Government are almost always public domain by law. Second, the license displayed here is incompatible with Wikipedia, as it stipulates a non-commercial requirement. Wikipedia's licensing requirements tell us that such a license is not free enough. It must be available for commercial opportunities as well. Therefore, File:3DiTeams percuss chest.JPG and any other work from that site (such as File:3DiTeams palpate hang blood.JPG) must be used under terms of WP:NFCC. --Hammersoft (talk) 16:28, 5 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! The commons photo is not tagged correctly since we gave the NIH the photo for use in a brochure and nothing else. The NIH does give attribution to Jeffery Taekman on their site (lab director and one of the subjects of the photo). We are trying to correct the attribution here to avoid contacting the NIH as Jeff did not mind having the photo available in the commons as long as we receive credit (we see it presentations at meetings all the time). If we can't get this changed here, we will be contacting the NIH in which case the photo will have to be changed here anyway.
If I remove the non-commercial clause, will that be sufficient? Thanks again! --Gene Hobbs (talk) 17:20, 5 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think if you get the license on the site updated to CC-BY-SA 3.0, that will clear the images here on en.Wikipedia. As for the NIH image, I did not know its provenance. But, if it can be sourced to your lab, and license independently proved, then we can drop the NIH claim of PD and relicense it under whatever (free) license you note. --Hammersoft (talk) 17:28, 5 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
OK, the webmaster just edited the permissions to BY-SA 3.0 here. If you could just point me to how to change the tags or do one as an example, I can knock out the rest. Thank you! I hate to be a bother, I usually only add references around here. --Gene Hobbs (talk) 21:33, 5 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The Copyright Cleanup Barnstar
This Barnstar given as a thank you for all your work in sorting out copyright and specifically for helping me learn a little in the process. --Gene Hobbs (talk) 00:36, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi You gave me these floolowing reasons for not using the file above: #1 as the image's use can be replaced by text, #3 for overuse of non-free images, #8 for significance as not increasing reader understanding in any significant way, #8 for being used as an icon, and #10c for being used without an appropriate non-free rationale being provided. I want to know what the problem of using Tehran Metro logo in articles related to Tehran and Tehran Metro is. And the logo used for Tehran Metro is a symbol used in almost every map and document used to refer to a Metro station and that was exactly what I was doing.

Nima Farid (talk) 20:14, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • File:Tehran Metro Logo.gif is a non-free image. As such, it must adhere to all restrictions in place for the use of such image codified in WP:NFCC policy and described further by WP:NFC guideline. I outlined the various failings of NFCC policy that this image has in the uses you attempted. The #10c issue is correctable. The #1, #3 and #8 issues are not. The image can not be used in the way you wish to use it. Whether or not the organization uses the logo in this way or not is irrelevant. --Hammersoft (talk) 20:18, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
