Aam Aadmi Party is a proposed Indian political party launched by activist Arvind Kejriwal on 26 November 2012 at Jantar Mantar in Delhi[1][2] after his movement with Anna Hazare dissipated in August 2012 with thin crowds and the Government ignoring him.[3]

Origin of Party

Arvind Kejriwal had split with Anna Hazare and launched his political party without giving out its name on 2 October 2012 [4] Anna Hazare and his associates, amongst whom Kiran Bedi has been prominent, objected to the political outfit.[5]

A meeting of around 300 founding members was held at Constitution Club during which Arvind Kejriwal proposed the name of the party which was accepted by other members.[6] The constitution of the party was proposed by Mayank Gandhi and seconded by Chandramohan.

Name of the Party

There has been some criticism against the thinking behind naming the new party with "Aam Aadmi" especially by Indian National Congress leaders Digvijay Singh [7] and Manish Tewari.[8] Arvind Kejriwal made a statement "Cong could never hijack the aam admi despite using the term 'aam admi'. Now they have lost the word too." [9]

Vision of AAP

After years of oppression, inequality, injustice and unfulfilled promises; most people are tired of corruption. It is this frustration that gave rise to the vision of Aam Admi Party:

"a system where the political leaders we elect and place in the Parliament are directly responsible to the voters who elected them. Our party's vision is to realize a dream of swaraj that Gandhiji had envisaged for a free india — where the power of governance and rights of democracy will be in the hands of the people of India."

Unconventional Manifesto

Some features of structure of this party stand out of the conventional typical party layout, important differences/deviation from standard party model are mentioned bellow:

  • There is no central high command in Aam Aadmi party. The party structure follows a bottom to top approach where the council members elect the Executive Body and also holds the power to recall it.[10]
  • No MLA or MP of this party will use red lights or any other beacons on his or her vehicles.[10]
  • No MLA or MP of this party will use any special security. We believe that elected people's representatives need the same security as a common man.[10]
  • No MLA or MP of our party will live in opulent and luxurious government housing.[10]
  • No one would need to buy an election ticket in this party. Candidates contesting elections from an area will be selected by the people of that area.[10]
  • Criminals (Goondaas) will never be given tickets in this party. A through screening process will ensure that no one with a criminal record or proven corruption charges could stand for elections from our party.[11]
  • This party will function with full financial transparency. Every single rupee collected by donations to run this party will be publicly declared on the party's website and all expenditures will also be declared on the website.[11]
  • Every member of the Aam Aadmi party will must follow a strict code of conduct. An independent body (Lokpal) has been set up, headed by 3 jurists and other eminent personalities to investigate charges of corruption, crime, substance abuse and moral turpitude against all office bearing members of the party. Any citizen can present proof of wrongdoing against a party member. If internal Lokpal finds the party member guilty, he or she will be subjected to appropriate disciplinary action as decided by the internal Lokpal.[11]
  • No two members of the same family will be eligible to contest elections in this party and no two members of the same family can become members of the Executive Body.[11]

Election Promises

AAP has promised to bring following changes once it is voted to power

  • To bring in the "Right to Reject" law - if majority goes for 'reject all', provision for fresh elections within a month.[10]
  • To bring in the "Right to Recall" law, voters can recall their representative and call for fresh elections before his/her term ends.[10]
  • Jan Lokpal will be passed in Parliament within 15 days of party being voted to power..[12]
  • Corrupt ministers will be jailed within six months of party being voted to power.[13]

Monetary support

On 26 November 2012, former law minister Shanti Bhushan donated 1 crore (US$120,000) to Aam Aadmi Party and around 1.6 lakh (US$1,900) was collected from people who had gathered to witness the ceremony.[14]
