Nizāmābād pronunciation(Template:Lang-te), also referred to as Indhooru (Template:Lang-te) or Indhrapuri (Template:Lang-te), is a city and a municipal corporation in Nizamabad District in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. It is the headquarters of the district. It has a population of 466,325 agglomeration (6 to 8 lakhs). Nizāmābād is the 10th most populous city in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Nizāmābād city is one of 36 mandals in the Nizāmābād district. It is located 171 kilometres (106 mi) north of state capital, Hyderabad.

History

Nizāmābād was formerly known as Induru and Indrapuri. It was ruled by the king Indra Vallabha Panthya Varsha Indra Som, of the Rashtrakuta Dynasty, in the 8th century, and took its name from him. In 1905 the railway line between Secundrabad and Manmad was constructed. The railway station was named after then ruler of the Nizam state Nizam-ul-Mulk as Nizāmābād. The railway line connects Hyderabad and Mumbai. It is like North-South corridor. Has the distance of 161 km (100 mi) from Hyderabad and 640 km (400 mi) from Mumbai.

The Nizam Sagar dam was constructed in the year 1923 across the Manjira River at the village of (Achampeta) Achampet. It irrigates 250,000 acres (1,000 km2; 390 sq mi) of land in Nizāmābād District.

Nizāmābād is in the north of Andhra Pradesh in the district of Nizamabad. It has many towns like Bodhan, Armuru, Kamareddy and Banswada, In Bodhan town there is Nizam Sugar Factory. In early years it was the biggest in the Asian continent. Bodhan is a town with a mixture of people from many cultural and religious backgrounds, consisting primarily of Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims as well as Christians and other religious communities.Famous people like Mirza Ejaz Ahmed Baig[who?] who currently lives in london hail from Nizāmābād. Once it was the capital at the time of the Rashtrakuta Empire.

The District derived its name Nizamabad from the Nizam of Hyderabad Asaf jahi, VI who ruled Deccan during the 18th century A.D. Originally the District was called Indur, supposed to have originated from the name of the king Indradatta who seems to have flourished it this region during the 5th century A.D. The history of Nizamabad is discontinues with gaps, which are yet to be bridged. The district has a few prehistoric sites. The existence of fairly developed megalithic culture was discovered at Armoor, Yellareddy, Kamareddy erstwhile taluks. Some of the major dynasties which extended their rule to the district Mauryas, Satavahanas, Rastrakutas and Chalukyas during the ancient period, Kakatiyas, Bahamani Sultans, Qutub shahis and Barid Shahis during the medieval period and Mughals and Asaf Jahis during the modern period. During the time of the Prime Minister-ship of Sir Salar Jung-I during 1876 A.D., the districts in the Nizam’s Dominion were re organized where upon Indur became a District. In 1905, the taluks of Nirmal and Narsapur were transferred to the newly created District of Adilabad and Mudhol Taluk and a part of Banswada Taluk to Nanded District. The rest of Banswada was divided into Bodhan and Yellareddy taluks. While Bheemgal was merged in Armoor taluk, other changes were made in Yellareddy and Kamareddy. The district in its new shape was chrisrened as Nizamabad. Before 1979,there were (7) taluks, in the district. However, during December 1979 Armoor and Kamareddy taluks have been bifurcated and (2) new taluks Viz, Bheemgal and Domakonda were formed. With these two taluks, the number of taluks rose from 7 to 9. During May 1985, 35 Mandals were formed as smaller administrative units in the district. They are listed under the head ‘Administrative Divisions’. During August 1988,Yedapally Mandal was newly formed, bringing the total no of Mandals to 36.
