The thing is that it was not actually bribery, it was political corruption, and even that can be (and is) disputed, which is why I wrote it the way I did... Let's try:

Sounds OK, since it's a notable feature (the canon was historically very strictly followed in our church architecture unlike in other countries), but the "one of the finest" part is sourced, and while I agree it's a bit POV, it's most certainly regarded as one of the finest indeed. "In violation..." may sound somewhat negative to people who don't know anything about it, they may think we're talking about some kind of mistake, when in fact it's just evolution, but I wouldn't object after all, although some rewording may be fine.
