- January 1 - Slovenia adopts the Euro as its official currency, replacing the tolar.

- The current British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, is expected to announce in March his date of leaving office. His successor, most likely Gordon Brown, will be decided in a leadership election. John McDonnell, the left-wing backbencher is the only other candidate for the position thus far. A race for the office of Deputy Prime Minister looks to be more of a 'competition', with Harriet Harman, Peter Hain, Hilary Benn, Jon Cruddas and Alan Johnson already in the race, as well as Hazel Blears and Jack Straw being speculated to enter the competition. There is a very slight possibility that Brown may announce a snap election if he becomes the Prime Minister.
