HyperOS[a] (Chinese: 澎湃OS; pinyin: Pēngbài OS; lit. 'Surge OS'), officially named Xiaomi HyperOS (Chinese: 小米澎湃OS; pinyin: Xiǎomǐ pēngbài OS; lit. 'Xiaomi Surge OS'), is an operating system developed by Xiaomi unifying MIUI, Xiaomi's Vela OS, Mina OS and car-focused operating system's software architecture[2] for its smartphones, IoT devices and other Xiaomi hardware such as its automobiles. It was announced on X and Weibo on October 17, 2023[3], and debuted alongside Xiaomi 14 Series on October 26, 2023 at 7 p.m. CST.[4][5] and replacing MIUI gradually in 2024.[6]
HyperOS introduces smoother animations, faster boot times for applications, and improved retention of apps in background memory. While it does not make major visual changes to the UI, users can expect minor tweaks and new customization options for the lock screen.[7]
With HyperOS, Xiaomi wants to make a "Human x Car x Home" smart ecosystem.[8][9] This approach is to create one single operating system that works across different devices and not just smartphones, hence the "Car" and "Home".
History
In 2017, Xiaomi was developing Xiaomi Vela OS to use with its own IoT devices. It is based on NuttX[10] and was announced in 2020.[11][12][13]
In 2019, Xiaomi pre-developed Xiaomi Mina OS, a microkernel security system.[2][13]
In 2020, Xiaomi integrated cross-platform interconnectivity protocols [13]
In 2021, following it's decision to make automobiles, Xiaomi was developing its own car-focused operating system.[2][13]
In 2022, Xiaomi decided to unity the aforementioned operating systems' software architecture, and HyperOS has finished it's research and development.[2][14][13]
MIUI's WeChat and Weibo's account has been changed to Xiaomi HyperOS on October 20, 2023 and October 23, 2023 respectively.[15][16]
On October 23, 2023, at 10:00 AM Beijing time, Xiaomi Group CEO Lei Jun announced that Xiaomi HyperOS would be officially released on October 26 at 7:00 PM [17].
On October 26, 2023, around 7:00 PM, Xiaomi HyperOS was launched in Beijing. The Vice President of Xiaomi Group's Mobile Department, Jin Fan, explained parts of the system content during the event, and the first batch of compatible models was announced. The Xiaomi 13 series, Xiaomi MIX Fold 2, Xiaomi MIX Fold 3, Redmi K60 series (excluding Redmi K60E), and Xiaomi Pad 6 series would receive the first official OTA push in December 2023.
On October 31, 2023, the first developer version of Xiaomi HyperOS, version 1.0.23.10.25, was released to the beta testing center via OTA, applicable to Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro. Starting from November 14, the first batch of five existing MIUI-based phone models received the developer version push of HyperOS.
On December 1, 2023, Xiaomi pushed the first official version of Xiaomi HyperOS, firmware version OS1.0.4.0.UMLCNXM, to users participating in the Redmi K60 Extreme Edition internal test, making this model the first to receive the official version of HyperOS via OTA.
On December 7, 2023, Xiaomi held an online experience communication meeting for Xiaomi HyperOS to complement the previous launch event, introducing upgrades in UI and interaction aspects. The first batch of official OTA pushes gradually began the same day. After the meeting, Xiaomi released the "Xiaomi HyperOS Technical White Paper" on its official website.
On December 27, 2023, Lei Jun announced on his Weibo account that Xiaomi HyperOS had adopted a graphical logo and explained its meaning: "The moment of every person's thoughts emerging is like the birth of the universe, with stars radiating. The Xiaomi HyperOS logo expresses 'galaxy explosion' as a central expanding dot matrix. People and devices within the dot matrix connect and interact in the surging universe in a lively manner. We pay tribute to the real universe and life, allowing every thought to flow freely." [18]. Currently, this graphical logo is used along with the textual logos "Powered by Xiaomi HyperOS" and "Xiaomi HyperOS Connect" on websites, promotional advertisements, and other occasions, while the startup interface and system information page of phones, tablets, car machines, etc., continue to use only the textual logo.
On December 28, 2023, at the Xiaomi Auto Technology Launch Event, Lei Jun announced that Xiaomi HyperOS had been integrated into Xiaomi vehicles, with the Xiaomi SU7 becoming the first car equipped with the Xiaomi HyperOS intelligent cockpit [19].
On February 23, 2024, Xiaomi released the Xiaomi Pad 6S Pro 12.4, the first tablet pre-installed with HyperOS.
On February 25, 2024, at MWC 2024 in Spain, Xiaomi officially launched Xiaomi HyperOS globally. Previously, models like POCO F5 had already received the HyperOS OTA push.
A leaked version of HyperOS V1 for phones was analyzed, it is developed as MIUI 15.[15] The leaked version does not contain any code for HyperOS. MIUI 15 was also mentioned in Xiaomi's Redmi K60 Ultra event.[20] HyperOS V1 for phones is thought to have started converting from MIUI 15 in October 2023, with HyperOS features being added later.
Development Model
Unless otherwise stated, the content described in this section only applies to mainland China and devices sold in the aforementioned region. |
Development Versions
Xiaomi HyperOS has three official development versions: Stable Version, Stable Beta, and Developer Version.
- Stable Version: The version pre-installed or pushed to smartphones and other smart devices by default. The version number varies depending on the device type. The term "Stable Version" is only mentioned within Xiaomi communities to distinguish it from the "Developer Version"; only the version number is displayed on the device information page, not the type of version. The update frequency of the Stable Version varies depending on firmware stability, user feedback, and the number of users, with no fixed update interval.
- Stable Beta: Before the large-scale push of the Stable Version, Xiaomi sets up a user verification group in the community to verify the firmware quality and identify potential bugs by recruiting users and reviewing their applications through quizzes. These users can experience newer stable firmware versions first, and only the version number is displayed on the device information page. If no significant bugs are reported by these users, the development team uploads this firmware to the stable version push server for mass distribution; if there are significant bugs, the development progress of that version is frozen, and the development team starts working on the next Stable Beta. The update frequency of the Stable Beta is the same as the Stable Version, with no fixed update interval.
- Developer Version: A system version maintained and developed by Xiaomi Group's independent testing department. It features more updates and unknown bugs compared to the Stable Version. Beta qualifications are granted through community recruitment and quizzes, with strict limits on the number of qualifications and supported models. The Developer Version is pushed to users every Friday afternoon, Beijing time, with update announcements posted in the Xiaomi Community Developer Version section. During Chinese public holidays, updates are paused, and related announcements are posted in advance. The Developer Version number is formatted as OS+Major Version+Year's Last Two Digits+Month+Date.DEV, usually reflecting the Monday of the week of the push. The Developer Version has an independent development process, with some new features periodically integrated into the Stable Version development process once stabilized.
On May 9, 2024, Xiaomi announced a new development route and format for HyperOS, canceling the "Developer Version" and renaming the original Stable Beta to "Beta Version" to further improve the version quality of Xiaomi HyperOS[21]. On May 17, 2024, the Xiaomi Community closed the Developer Version application portal and cleared all recruitment models, but continued to provide updates for existing Developer Version beta users until August 2024.
Testing Organizations and Firmware Access
Xiaomi HyperOS's Stable Beta and Developer Version firmware can be accessed through the Xiaomi Community APP. Authorized users can also manually switch (Developer Version) on the system update page[note 1] or directly via OTA (Stable Beta). The Xiaomi Community sets a cap on the number of applicants for each model's test version, closing the application portal once the cap is reached, denying new applicants. In the options menu on the system information page, users can manually switch between Stable (including Beta) and Developer versions[note 2]. Both versions are not mutually exclusive, allowing users to hold qualifications for both versions for the same model. A single Xiaomi account can have testing qualifications for up to three different models of phones and tablets within the same development branch.
Users applying for Xiaomi HyperOS's Stable Beta and Developer Versions must meet the following conditions:
- Registered and logged into a Xiaomi account on the currently used phone;
- Community growth level of 4 or above;
- Completed real-name verification and activity verification in the Xiaomi Community;
- The current phone model is included in the community recruitment model list;
- Achieved a score of 80 or above in the community's flashing-related quiz.
Users who need to downgrade a device with the Developer Version to a Stable Version with a lower Android security update version must separately apply for bootloader unlock permissions. The application for unlock permissions requires meeting the following conditions and downloading and installing the Xiaomi Unlock Tool and MiFlash software on a Windows PC:
- Passed the "Unlock Qualification Quiz Test". If not applied for unlocking or the qualification application is not approved after passing, the quiz score will be reset every Tuesday at midnight;
- Community growth level of 5 or above;
- Completed real-name verification and activity verification in the Xiaomi Community[22].
Applicants suspected of selling beta or unlock qualifications, or violating other beta rules, will have their qualifications canceled and risk account bans or restrictions.
System Features
Underlying Reconstruction
Xiaomi claims that it has completely restructured the underlying architecture of HyperOS, finely processing and scheduling hardware resources to reduce latency and enable faster multitasking. For different hardware, HyperOS can flexibly configure firmware size. On mobile devices, building on MIUI 14's "Razor Plan," HyperOS further reduces the system firmware footprint. The system firmware size of Xiaomi 14 is 9GB, reduced by 3GB compared to the previous generation. Additionally, HyperOS brings faster OTA speeds and lower OTA occupation.[23]
Cross-Device Intelligent Connectivity
Building on previous technologies like MIUI+, Xiaomi Miaoxiang, Xiaomi Miaobo, and Mi Home smart control, Xiaomi has launched a unified cross-device interconnect framework, Xiaomi HyperConnect.[24] In an interview with Flypig, Jin Fan, Vice President of Xiaomi Group's Mobile Department and head of the System Software Department, revealed that Xiaomi's cross-device interconnect framework allows multiple devices to reuse a single codebase, eliminating the need for redundant development.[2]
Under the cross-device framework, all smart devices achieve real-time unified networking and can be quickly controlled in the "Fusion Device Center" on phones, tablets, and other devices. Some hardware can also be cross-device called, such as tablets invoking phone cameras and 5G communication modules.[25]
On November 16, 2023, at the Xiaomi IoT Ecosystem Partner Conference, Xiaomi officially announced the launch of the interconnect brand "Xiaomi HyperOS Connect," a new technology brand aimed at the entire ecosystem of people, cars, and homes. It provides certification for devices accessing the Xiaomi interconnect ecosystem, including laptops and smart home appliances.[26]
Active Intelligence
Leveraging the AI computing power of platforms such as Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, Xiaomi HyperOS implements AI features like AI cutout, AI enlargement, large model dialogue, and AI intelligent input. Additionally, Xiaomi introduced "Xiaomi HyperMind," a "cross-device intelligent thinking hub" that automates the behavior of surrounding devices by learning user habits, achieving seamless control of smart home devices.[27]
At the Xiaomi Auto Technology Launch and Listing Conference, Xiaomi announced that AI capabilities such as Xiao Ai large model and Xiaomi HyperMind were officially implemented in Xiaomi SU7.[28][29]
Comprehensive Security
Xiaomi HyperOS emphasizes enhanced security, providing end-to-end encryption through the TEE kernel and offering comprehensive protection at the hardware level.[30] It is notable that for MediaTek devices, Xiaomi claims to use a self-developed TEE kernel, which does not support Qualcomm devices.[note 3] Additionally, HyperOS supports managing cross-device call permissions for cameras, screens, and other interconnected features.
Aesthetics of Life
Xiaomi HyperOS has restructured the graphics subsystem and redesigned the system interface. Multiple application interfaces and controls have also been reconstructed, introducing advanced effects like mixed color blur, dynamic glass, and spatial shadows.
The globally targeted MiSans Global font was also released alongside HyperOS, adapted to over 600 languages worldwide, building a consistent multi-language information experience and providing a universal experience for HyperOS interconnectivity.[31]
Supported Devices
The 1.0 version of Xiaomi HyperOS supports all smartphones under the Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO brands based on the Android 13 and above system layers. Among these, eight phones including the Xiaomi 14 series (3 models, 4 versions), Xiaomi Civi4 Pro, Redmi K70 series (3 models), and Redmi Turbo 3, as well as two tablets, Xiaomi Pad 6S Pro 12.4 and Redmi Pad Pro, come pre-installed with Hyper OS 1.0. In addition, 63 mobile devices are supported for upgrading from MIUI to Hyper OS 1.0, including 26 Xiaomi phones, 7 Xiaomi tablets, 28 Redmi phones, and 2 Redmi tablets.
Currently, 19 phones and 1 tablet are still providing development versions; development versions for other smart hardware devices are only available to a limited number of users.

Controversies
Alleged Name Change Before Release
In August 2023, during the promotional phase of the Redmi K60 Extreme Edition after its release, Xiaomi stated that this phone would be among the first to upgrade to MIUI 15, promising five years of OTA updates[38]. However, Xiaomi ultimately did not release MIUI 15 but instead officially announced Xiaomi HyperOS. Some netizens believe that Xiaomi HyperOS was a temporary rebranding of MIUI 15 for promotional convenience. Additionally, on November 4, 2023, during a Bilibili live stream by the Chinese digital media Geekerwan, the host Yunfei revealed that the system version sent for media testing in September for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 was MIUI 15, not HyperOS[39].
Xiaomi has not explained the cancellation of MIUI 15, and the promotional material regarding the five-year system OTA updates for the Redmi K60 Extreme Edition has not been retracted. On December 1, 2023, the first official version of Xiaomi HyperOS was pushed to this model.
Alleged "Android Shell"
Similar to the Harmony OS, Xiaomi HyperOS faced widespread netizen controversy over whether it was entirely self-developed and accusations of being an "Android shell" upon its unveiling. Addressing this controversy, Jin Fan, Vice President of Xiaomi Group's Mobile Department and head of the System Software Department, stated in an interview with Flypig that Xiaomi has the capability to use its own kernel or the Linux kernel to launch an operating system functionally and UI-wise identical to the released HyperOS. He suggested that the reason Xiaomi uses the Android kernel for phones and tablets is due to considerations of the existing software ecosystem[40].
Technical White Paper Errors
On December 7, 2023, Xiaomi held a Xiaomi HyperOS experience communication meeting, explaining some details, underlying technical architecture, functions, and designs of HyperOS[41], and simultaneously released the HyperOS technical white paper. However, netizens discovered numerous typos and formatting errors due to document conversion in the publicly released white paper[42], sparking heated discussions online. Xiaomi has since corrected and re-uploaded the white paper to address these errors.

Notes
- ^ The first switch requires tapping the Xiaomi HyperOS logo 10 times on the system update page before clicking the top right corner to switch.
- ^ If the latest Stable Version's Android security update version is lower than the latest Developer Version, switching from Developer to Stable Version will not be possible.
- ^ As stated on the Xiaomi HyperOS official website: The security and privacy framework diagram mentioned in the "Comprehensive Security" section of this page and the Xiaomi HyperOS launch event uses the MTK platform as an example. The underlying architecture varies between different hardware platforms. Please refer to the actual performance. The self-developed TEE system and system application security enhancement functions currently only support some models on the MTK platform.
- ^ This model continues to be maintained under MIUI Pad 14 even after pushing Hyper OS.
