Instructions

Using a DYK suggestion string (see below examples), list new suggestions in the candidate entries section below under the date the article was created or the expansion began (not the date you submit it here), with the newest dates at the top. Any user may nominate a DYK suggestion; self-nominations are permitted and encouraged. Thanks for participating and please remember to check back for comments on your nomination.

DYK criteria

Official criteria: DYK rules and additional guidelines
Unofficial Guide: Learning DYK

How to list a new nomination

Please use one of the strings below to post your DYK nomination, using the "author" and "nominator" fields to identify the users who should receive credit for their contributions if the hook is featured on the main page.

  1. Nom without image: {{subst:NewDYKnom | article= | hook=... that ? | author= }}
  2. Nom with image: {{subst:NewDYKnom | article= | hook=... that ? | author= | image= | caption= }}
    To include more than one new or expanded article in a single hook: |article2= |article3= |article4= | (etc)
    To include more than one author: |author2= |author3= | (etc)
    To include alternate hooks: |ALT1= |ALT2= | (etc)
    To add a comment: |comment=
    To add the article you reviewed: |reviewed=

Do not wikilink the article title, or the author username field; the template will wikilink them automatically. Do wikilink the article title in the hook field, however.
Do not add a section heading if you are using the template; the template will add one for you.
Do not include a signature (~~~~) after the template.
Do not use non-free images in your hook suggestion.

An example of how to use the template is given below. Full details are at {{NewDYKnom}}:

{{subst:NewDYKnom
 | article       = Example`
 | status        = new<!--(or) expanded-->
 | hook = ... that this [[article]] is an '''[[example]]''' ''(pictured)''?
 | author        = User
 | nominator     =
 | image         = Example.png
 | rollover = An example image
 | comment       =
}}
  • Note that you should only use one of the above templates for the original hook. If you want to suggest a second, alternative hook for the same article submission, just type it in manually. The above templates output useful code for each submission and if you employ them for alternative hooks, you will mess up the page formatting.
  • When saving your suggestion, please add the name of the suggested article to your edit summary.
  • Please check back for comments on your nomination. Responding to reasonable objections will help ensure that your article is listed.
  • If you nominate someone else's article, you can use {{subst:DYKNom}} to notify them. Usage: {{subst:DYKNom|Article name|September 3}} Thanks, ~~~~

How to review a nomination

Any editor who was not involved in writing/expanding or nominating an article may review it by checking to see that the article meets all the DYK criteria (long enough, new enough, no serious editorial or content issues) and the hook is cited. Editors may also alter the suggested hook to improve it, or may suggest new hooks.

If you want to confirm that an article is ready to be placed on a later update, or note that there is an issue with the article or hook, you may use the following symbols (optional) to point the issues out:

Symbol Code DYK Ready? Description
{{subst:DYKtick}} Yes No problems, ready for DYK
{{subst:DYKtickAGF}} Yes Article is ready for DYK, with a foreign-language or offline hook reference accepted in good faith
{{subst:DYK?}} Query DYK eligibility requires that an issue be addressed. Notify nominator with {{subst:DYKproblem|Article}}
{{subst:DYK?no}} Maybe DYK eligibility requires additional work. Notify nominator with {{subst:DYKproblem|Article}}
{{subst:DYKno}} No Article is either completely ineligible, or else requires considerable work before becoming eligible

Please consider using {{subst:DYKproblem|Article|header=yes|sig=yes}} on the nominator's talk page, in case they do not notice if there is an issue.

Backlogged?

This page often seems to be backlogged. If the DYK template has not been updated for substantially more than 6 hours, it may be useful to attract the attention of one of the administrators who regularly updates the template. See the page Wikipedia:Did you know/Admins for a list of administrators who have volunteered to help with this project.

Where is my hook?

If you can't find the hook you submitted to this page, in most cases it means your article has been approved and is in the queue for display on the main page. You can check whether your hook has been moved to the queue by reviewing the queue listings.

If your hook is not in the queue or already on the main page, it has probably been deleted. Deletion occurs if the hook is more than about eight days old and has unresolved issues for which any discussion has gone stale. If you think your hook has been unfairly deleted, you can query its deletion on the discussion page, but as a general rule deleted hooks will only be restored in exceptional circumstances.

I'm sure it is magnificent, but it is WP:PEACOCK to say so in a hook & it doesn't seem to be referenced. Things you could usefully say are "Roman, 3rd century, in Israel.....etc". Article requires considerable expansion before becoming eligible. Right now it reads like a puff piece written by her publicist. I even question the notability of the subject. MovieMadness (talk) 13:55, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've changed your comment to a DYK? rather than a no right away. If you've been that active here in DYK, you should know by now that I do not create articles outside of my project pages, this is an exception since her article was the only one missing in the Forbes list. By the way I want to stress two points:
  • The article does not need considerable expansion as you know DYK rules suggest that it should be at least 1500 characters of prose, article tallies at 1821 excluding headers or ref guides.
  • When experiencing issues like these in DYK, normal protocol is to tag it as before shunning it down right? As courtesy to the editor who created the article and to give that person time to edit/improve the article.
Article is in AfD right now, let's have the others asses the article and not to conclude that I'm her publicist. --TitanOne (talk) 23:38, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Comment First and foremost, if you disagree with another editor's tag and wish to question it, feel free to do so, but under no circumstance should you ever change it to one you prefer. As for DYK rules suggesting an article should be at least 1500 characters of prose, that prose should be more substantial than triviliaties like she has a cat or doesn't mind cold weather. I could create an article with 10,000 words of nonsense; just because it was long wouldn't make it eligibile. A lot more than length needs to be considered. And please note I never said you were her publicist, I said the article "reads like a puff piece written by her publicist," which it does. MovieMadness (talk) 14:26, 9 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You're at 12240/5410 = 2.3x prose expansion now. Our rules say that the prose should be expanded fivefold for DYK consideration. Since the article is already long, I'd recommend GA instead of DYK. Shubinator (talk) 00:46, 9 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Um... I have no idea of what this article is about... warps and shuttles? Star Trek? Ok, it looks like something to do with weaving, but... • Would this hook be preferable?
... that a shed is a weaving term for the temporary separation in warp threads so the shuttle with the weft can go through?
I've attempted to explain a bit more in the article, which does assume some basic knowledge of woven fabric, but I'm not sure how much clearer I can be. Where exactly is the confusion? Is it with the whole concept? Loggie (talk) 23:57, 9 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • And it still does. "This is the oldest English Ashkenazi synagogue, and in a national context is a remarkable example which both predates and is more complete than any other synagogues. (The Buildings of England: Pevsner N: Devon: London: 1989-: 648)." This seems to be clear in its meaning that it is referring to England. --candlewicke 22:54, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Pevsner is reliable for many things, but on this we need to trust Sharman Kadish. Her article on Plymouth is labeled, "The oldest Ashkenazi synagogue in the English speaking world." an assertion that she repeats in the text. And, certainly, the oldest surviving Ashkenazi synagogue building in the US dates to 1849, Canada, 1863, Australia 1845, South africa 1863, and the old synagogues in Gibraltar, and the Caribbean are all Sephardic. So Kadish's assertion checks out. I'll fix the sourcing in the article.Historicist (talk) 23:46, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The ALT is clearly more interesting, but needs to be cleaned up (maybe you're not a native English speaker, but "by the concert of various instruments" is very archaic writing, from a book over 200 years old, and there are other grammar errors). Here is an attempt:
There are just two issues here. One is that it could be seen as derogatory and it's from a very old source; I've tried to allay that by saying "were said to..." to distance ourselves from the claim, but it might still be problematic. Not being a historian, I don't know how seriously Commerçon's work is taken now and I don't know whether or not this claim is universally accepted; someone else with more experience will have to clarify for me whether or not this hook could be problematic.
The other problem is the article. Someone (maybe me later, I'm just about to go right now) will need to check it for possible close paraphrasing or unintentional plagiarism from the sources. Your hook copies a sentence from Commerçon word for word without attributing it, and if you've done that in the hook then it's possible you did so in the article as well. We need to make sure the whole article is clean before promoting it. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 00:17, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've browsed some other sources and they confirm this account. The hook is now fixed. Other accounts are cited directly to reflect the origin and avoid misinterpretation, but any further editing is naturally welcome. Brandt 09:47, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • That doesn't matter. As long as the hook itself is referenced by at least one WP:RS, everything is hunky dory from DYKs point of view. A single source or low number of citations is not a reason to question or reject a DYK as long as the hook itself has an inline. Ironholds (talk) 07:01, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
A few points:
  • None of the rules (or even the additional rules) says anything about the number of sources in the article. The only rules mention that the article should contain citations, and that the hook be specifically cited.
  • I lists three sources, even though I only cited from one.
  • One of the three is a freely-available online resource.
  • I will add cites from the other two sources.
-Magic♪piano 11:15, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Agree with all your points, particularly the first one (as mentioned above). I'm not quite sure where Shubinator is getting this from. For future reference it is useful and good practice to put in inline citations from the other two as well, but not required for DYK. Ironholds (talk) 14:51, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There are over 10 paragraphs without inline citations. An informal guideline is at least one citation per paragraph. Another editor also noted the citations to a single source. While there are two other references, without inline citations it's hard to verify information from those sources (thanks for adding some inline citations to those refs). Rule E3 says you might be asked to provide more than one source.
DYK is about creating content for Wikipedia. As Wikipedia's standards rise, so do ours. Although there's no hard and fast rule about single sourcing, consensus is leaning towards such a rule. In the end, reviewers (not the rules) decide whether or not an article is showcased at DYK. Shubinator (talk) 00:57, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Anyone who is going to verify the content I placed in the article is going to need to gain access to the books (other than Parkman, in the case of this article) in order to do so. I don't see how adding citations is going to assist much in the verifier's burden, especially when you consider that this is essentially a chronology and as such probably does not deviate widely from the order of presentation in its sources. Only someone doing a detailed verification of most of the article content might have cause to complain (in which case I will be happy to add additional citations, clarify my use of sources on the article talk page, or make corrections to the article). I don't have any reason to believe that level of inspection has happened to any article I've put through any other formal review process, almost all of which will require a trip to the library or bookstore to verify. (That includes multiple passed GA and FA reviews.)
I repeat: I provided more than one source. Anyone who bothers to look at the uncited sources can fairly quickly determine that the basic facts presented align with those works. That you (and the editor that tagged the article as "single source", I'm guessing in response to your initial comment) complain of single-sourcing without actually attempting to verify the content does not really do much to improve article quality. If you do in fact work to verify my content contributions, I welcome questions if there is any uncertainty about where specific content was sourced from. In the meantime, I've got more articles to destub. Magic♪piano 03:07, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Magic: you know that I respect you and your work from my A-class reviews, but I have to side with Shubinator. These days, DYK articles have to fully cite their sources using in-line citations. That's not to say that some have passed with less than that (sort of like GAN, anyone can add a green check here and sometimes articles are not checked twice), but it is the current consensus. While no one does do a full verification, we request that you provide sources for where you got your paragraphs, and trust that you aren't making stuff up as you go along. —Ed (TalkContribs) 03:42, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I understand the need for citation for other goals (B class, GA, FA). I find your statement to work against the goal of rewarding significant expansions of content within a limited period of time. Right now I don't have clarity about what in terms of sources and citations is sufficient for DYK (beyond the one required for the hook), and would thus have to cite a large part of the article (something I currently only do for articles I'm grooming for formal reviews). I find citation to be a time-consuming task, and (as noted above) not necessarily indicative of, or required for, article quality. As Shubinator notes below, this is probably a subject for a different forum. (Others can go to bat on the issue, since I'd rather work on improving content than argue about rules. If these are really the rules here and now, I won't be back. If this article does not satisfy the rules of DYK as it currently stands, I don't care.) Magic♪piano 00:59, 4 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Shubinator: I'd suggest checking out the section on the DYK additional rules containing '"Rules" sometimes invoked but lacking a consensus' - you'll find "Is one source for an article enough?" sitting there. If reviewers decide what is acceptable (not the rules) we'll have no hard-and-fast standard. You evidently think one source isn't enough - consensus, according to the additional rules, disagrees. But that's alright! Evidently consensus doesn't matter as long as the individual reviewer applies his standards to a hook. Ironholds (talk) 07:09, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Um, did you read Ed's post? Anyways, if you wish to continue this discussion, start a thread a Wikipedia talk:Did you know, as it is a discussion on general DYK issues, not a particular nom (there are now inline citations to multiple sources in this article). • Looks good length, hooks, everything. The citations could be improved, but they are adequate for DYK. That being said, the early Jesuit Missions to China are one of the areas of personal interest (one of my senior thesis in College was on Matteor Ricci.)---Balloonman NO! Alt1 ... that after arranging to have his predecesssor, Johann Adam Schall von Bell, sentenced to death for the death of Empress Xiao Xian, Yang Guangxian became the head of the Chinese Bureau of Astronomy?

Alt2 ... that after arranging to have his predecesssor, Johann Adam Schall von Bell, sentenced to death, Yang Guangxian became the head of the Chinese Bureau of Astronomy?

Alt3 ... that after Empress Xiao Xian died, Yang Guangxian became the head of the Chinese Bureau of Astronomy by arranging to make it look like his predecesssor, Johann Adam Schall von Bell killed her?

  • I can't tell from reading the article if he did it just to get the position, so I'm not sure about Alt3. How about:

Alt4 ... that after affixing blame for the death of Empress Xiao Xian on Johann Adam Schall von Bell, Yang Guangxian took his place as head of the Chinese Bureau of Astronomy? Clarityfiend (talk) 03:00, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I like Clarity's suggestion, but would reword it "took his von Bell's place".---Balloonman NO! I'm Spartacus! 03:38, 5 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am going to prepare on article on the "Bloodbath at Hampden Park," and will then amend this to make it a double DYK. Should be able to do this tonight. So please hold off in promoting this hook. Cbl62 (talk) 00:03, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dunno, the ref was kinda vague- i tweaked it anyway, added "mainly" instead of "normally" Ryan shell (talk) 22:54, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Created/expanded by Zeus1234 (talk). Self nom at 09:38, 29 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • "wonder hall" sounds unusual (try Googling the phrase, and note that most hits don't have that meaning). "hall of wonders" is better. "wonder" doesn't occur in the article at all, but it apparently refers to Daxiongbao Hall, with artifacts that could be called "wonders" if that isn't too WP:PEACOCKy. ATL1: ... that polymorphism of the reproductive system of some gastropods (mating slugs pictured) is common?

--Snek01 (talk) 18:13, 9 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid that hook doesn't make much sense either. If it's only common to some gastropods, it's not really common. Gatoclass (talk) 18:22, 9 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
ATL2: ... that polymorphism of the reproductive system of stylommatophoran gastropods (mating slugs pictured) is common?

--Snek01 (talk) 21:26, 9 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A little better, unfortunately I think there are still some problems with this article. Most of it is uncited, indeed the only cited bit seems to be that for the hook itself. I am also asking myself how much of this article is really original and how much may already exist in other articles on the various gastropod species.
