Your posts adding honorifics[edit]

Hi,

I noticed that you recently added "The Honourable" to quite a few articles. From the Wikipedia:Manual of Style (biographies)#Honorific_prefixes: "Styles and honorifics which are derived from political activities, including but not limited to The Right Honourable for being a Member of the Privy Council, should not be included in the text inline but may be legitimately discussed in the article proper." Please do not add these in the future but mention them in the article instead. I will revert these changes. --YUL89YYZ 11:53, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

List of WWE Champions[edit]

Take a good look at WP:FUC and explain why those pics should be used. They don't really help the article IMO, and having that many fair use pics in one article (especially when they aren't needed) is something that should be avoided. TJ Spyke 04:32, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

  • Fair use criteria #8 "The material must contribute significantly to the article (e.g. identify the subject of an article, or specifically illustrate relevant points or sections within the text) and must not serve a purely decorative purpose." The article is about a list of WWE Champions, not any of the specific wrestlers nor do they illustrate any points. Fair use pictures are not the same as free pictures. BTW, comments should go on my talk page and not my userpage. TJ Spyke 06:20, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
    • You misunderstand, for this article the relevent point would be the actual title changes. Picture while they are champs later do not do this (especially having the same pic for multiple reigns). BTW, put comments on my TALK PAGE (not my userpage). TJ Spyke 06:29, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
      • Before I continue, stop posting your comments on my userpage. When you click on my name, click on the tab that says "Discussion". That is my talkpage, where your comments should go. I have listed your comments at the bottom of the page. TJ Spyke 06:57, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Canadian Club of Toronto logo.jpg[edit]

Nuvola apps important.svg

Thanks for uploading Image:Canadian Club of Toronto logo.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 18:38, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

Jim Cramer[edit]

Hello, looks like you must have seen an interview with Cramer on "Hardball" based on your edits today. For the benefit of the rest of us who didn't, can you find a source that these new facts can be verified by other editors, like are there transcripts or videos online available? Not calling you a liar or anything like that, I ask because this is a BLP, and facts added need reliable sources that can be verified by other editors who didn't witness the show. So your edits will probably get requests for WP:RS. Thanks in advance. Piperdown 03:29, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

Hey Adam, could you move your comment from my user page to my talk page? Thanks in advance. I understand what you are up against with wanting to include what you saw on TV but can't find stated anywhere, and I'm not advocating removal of your edits without prejudice, but do you not see the problem with allowing people to edit Biographies with first-hand accounts of what they saw on TV? You could have been mischievous and editing the biography to say "Jim Cramer hates little old ladies" and there's no way for other editors to corroborate that fact other than "gee that doesn't sound right". For a more realistic example, Jim Cramer did actually live out of his car for a short time as a cub reporter. But if someone included this pretty extraordinary fact in his bio, without a citation that others could look up, it would get removed as other editors not familiar with that fact would think it preposterous. There's just way too many WP articles that include first-hand accounts by editors of what they see on TV, and biographies need to be 100% sourced, especially. Piperdown 02:22, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

I waited long enough, moved your comments on my user page to my talk page. Please don't edit other people's user pages and please sign your edits from now on. Thanks, carry on... Piperdown 20:15, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

Fundamentalist/modernist article[edit]

Adam SK, I just finish reading your article on Fundamentalist/modernist controversy, Wow, Thank you. It was very enlightening. I also noticed that you contributed to the Fundamentalist article quite heavily. I am an independent Baptist and have always considered myself a fundamentalist although somewhat of a moderate fundamentalist, but never really knew the history of the term. Recently I have been searching for a good definition of what a fundamentalist is and your articles have really given me good insight. In your writing you hide which side you consider yourself to fall on which I guess is Wikipedia NPOV standard compliance and you did a good job of it. Thanks again you can respond on my talk page if you would like.Mortsey 02:14, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for responding to my post above. I noticed that you did not mention Dr. Carl McIntire. I really do not know a lot about him, but have heard that he made some waves at Princeton Seminary when he leftover separation issues. Among Fundamentalists of the John R Rice, Bob Jones Sr., Ian Paisley strip he is considered a Fundamentalist, he was integral in founding the Bible Presbyterian denomination as well as the American Council of Christian Churches and the International Council of Christian Churches in opposition to the National Council of Churches and the World Council of Churches. I am courious if he was insignificant in the grand scheme of things and his followers have hyped him up or if there is some other reason. Also I can appreciate your background and your current position as you described them. There is something to be said for unity, and there is something to be said for purity. I think that at the heart of the Fundamentalist movement has been the desire for purity, this has at times come at the expense of unity when separation from unbelief and or heresy was not the issue. From your article it seems that this was not as much of a problem in the Presbyterian Church as it was in Baptist Circles and especially in circles of Independent Baptist Churches. Where often separation has been due more to personality conflicts than to doctrinal issues. ( J. Frank Norris Vs John R Rice, John R. Rice Vs Bob Jones, Sr. et al) Passing its culture of separation over personality conflict on to the next generation we have churches that align with this baptist college or that baptist college, and we have colleges hurling what amounts to petty insults at each other. Bob Jones University Vs Pensacola Christian College Vs Hyles-Anderson College et al. This is the Fundamentalism that I am more familiar with, it is at times ugly on personal level which gives the whole movement which was founded for the purpose of religious purity an ugly face. This is probably why I found your article so interesting.Mortsey 20:53, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

Fundamentalist-Modernist Controversy and Harry Fosdick[edit]

I've absorbed this well researched and clearly written article (although the utter lack of footnotes is disappointing giving the, I suspect, wrong impression that this is original research). A nice piece of scholarship and written with a neutral tone of voice – refreshing. I hope that you can bring your extensive knowledge and ability to write the Harry Emerson Fosdick article which is, at best, a poorly written, confused and inaccurate stub. I have started working on the article but an expert like yourself would be, in my opinion, more appropriate. I read that your admiration bends more toward the conservative actors in the controversy (e.g., Clarence E. Macartney) but don't you think your project is incomplete until such a seminal character is also well represented?  ∴ Therefore  talk   22:56, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

Denomination Info Box[edit]

There are going to be huge issues with this box throughout the Anglican Communion pages. At the very least, the boxes can be misleading in their presentation of facts. At worst, they invite non-NPOV responses that can be used to advance an agenda. It is important to be sensitive to these concerns.

An info box is fine on a biography page, either somebody was born on January 1st or they weren't. Not so with these churches. If I told a Roman Catholic that his Church was founded by Constantine in the 4th century (as some argue) we would have a disagreement. Like wise if a Roman Catholic told a Baptist that John Smyth founded his Church, he would surely be informed that it was Jesus who founded the Baptists.

I am not advancing any of these opinions, I just want to point out a few reasons why the box will cause endless strife on many of the pages it sits on.

This box just is not a good fit for the C of E or probably any of the daughter Churches. In our Communion, which is sadly holding together by a thread right now, we cannot even agree who is Anglican anymore, let alone who among us is Protestant and who is not. These boxes will be devisive on Anglican pages and will distract editors from doing the real work of Wikipedia: performing quality editing.

I have removed these boxes for now from C of E, C of I, C in W, SEC, & ECUSA and I invite you to respond to the comments on the indivdual talk pages or at my talk page. I ask that you avoid putting up more boxes on other the pages of Churches in union with Canterbury until there has been some consenus formed on this subject. I look forward to the discussion. -- SECisek 06:08, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Adam sk: In reply to your comment at Talk:Episcopal Church in the United States of America, I agree that it is better to improve rather than delete. But sometimes forcing round pegs into square holes is too much of a bother. And the nuances in this case are not trivial but contentious enough that they'd end up spawning an edit war. Really I do try to add content to Wikipedia and not take it away. Cheers! Wassupwestcoast 15:52, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

American Episcopal Church[edit]

Another editor has added the "{{prod}}" template to the article American Episcopal Church, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. re. the Fundamentalism article[edit]

Hi Adam,

I was formerly Bhikkhu Santi, i.e. a Buddhist monk, I disrobed just a week ago and now I'm back home in UK. It was mainly out of prolonged dissappointment and despair with the actual state of the Order (not the ideal, which I still believe in). I intend to join Uni next year (as it's too late to enter this year) and aim to make a career in Buddhist scholarship. I specialise in early Buddhism, comparative text- and historical-critical studies of the various recensions and versions of the early texts (pre C3 BCE), especially the communal legal system of the Order. I currently have two main research projects ongoing: one is on the implicit theory of authority in early Buddhism, and how and why it has evolved up till now, and the implications for the correct interpretation of the communal legal system of the monastic Order, and the interrelatedness of the theory of authority, epistemology, ontology, and meta-ethics of Buddhism; the other is on reconstructing the meta-ethics of early Buddhism, and then working out the implications for the interpretation of the normative ethics found in the early texts, and I hope to conclude it with investigating the interrelations of economic circumstances with political structures and ways of reasoning about ethics. I can read the original sources in Indic languages more or less, a little bit of classical Chinese with computer software, so far I only use English trs.s or paraphrase summaries of the Tibetan translations but I intend to learn at Uni to access the texts myself.

I wrote the attempt at a more universal definition on the Fundamentalism page almost 9 months ago now. It's been deleted, I replaced it on the discussion page but it's been ignored for ages.

I was pleased to see that you removed the Origins and Development of the Term section, and that you agree that there is far too much emphasis on the Christian type of fundamentalism in the article at the moment.

I would like to see each particular type of religious (and perhaps non-religious fundamentalism) teased out into seperate but linked articles, and use the Fundamentalism article to try to get to the roots of what 'fundamentalism' is per se, in a general but penetrative way.

This is what I was trying to do with my new definition section, which is still on the discussion page of the Fundamentalism article.

I just read your Fundementalist-Modernist Controversy article. I am impressed, it is both scholarly and engagingly well written.

If you agree that the main article needs to be more general - as well as a lot more concise! - would you like to work together on it? And in the process it would be good if you - since you obviously know a lot about the Christian part of it - could precis out the good points from the currently extremely prolix and repetitive material on Christian fundamentalism and move them over into the Christian Fundamentalism article proper. (I guess it would be good to have a brief summary of the Christian origins of the term on the main page, but no more than a short paragraph I think.) Currently the article is so long and discoordinated that it's not really going to be useful to anyone who's using it as an encyclopedia article, for a concise summary explanation. It's currently a muddied bloodied battle ground between people who already know quite a lot about the subject but can't reach a consensus.

I would like to see you work on distilling the Christian material down to a short paragraph and moving all the useful but too detailed information over into the Christian Fundamentalism article, because you seem to be very good at this topic. And I would like your feedback on the attempt at a universally applicable general definition of fundamentalism per se which I posted before, now on the discussion page. By all means critique it point by point if you disagree - I started writing about it because I'm personally interested in investigating what makes a 'fundamentalist', and whether all types of position that would be 'fundamentalist' by the American Heritage Dictionary's definition are of the nature to produce the kind of intolerance and belligerence normally associated with the term now. Whether it appears on wikipedia or not (or rather stays there!) is of secondary importance, I would appreciate any intelligent feedback anyway for my personal education.

Of course there is no urgency with this, I have been away from wikipedia for about nine months, I'm not in any rush. Please reply when it is convenient.

Best wishes, Kester.

List of Governors General of Canada[edit]

I like the improvements you have made to this article, but this list still has some problems. For example, the titles varied: I believe that Guy Carleton was "Governor in Chief" instead of "Governor General" and Carleton was also the Governor of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick rather than just of the "Canadas". There are also individuals who were the de facto Governor General, but are not on this list and they really belong on this list. I know enough to know this list has problems, but I don't have enough information to fix it properly. BradMajors (talk) 09:32, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for the great picture. Are you sure that the picture is of this John Maynard? I have in mind | this reference to a man I think is John Maynard (MP). And there is also John Maynard (KB)'s son, to add to the potential confusion. 45ossington (talk) 07:18, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

But its still a great pic, we just need to be sure which of the JM's it is. Well done Victuallers (talk) 14:32, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
Well, I admit I probably didn't do due diligence on this before I posted the picture, since I just surmised from the way that he was dressed that the portrait was from the first half of the 17th century.
However, since
  1. [1] identifies the portrait in the Strawberry Hill Collection, and
  2. the Lewis Walpole Library's was made up of the Strawberry Hill Collection; and since
  3. your source is clearly referring to John Maynard (MP) (although I was briefly confused by the fact that John Maynard (KB) was also sent to the Tower by parliament):
I agree that it's probably fair to conclude that the portrait I posted is probably John Maynard (MP), not John Maynard (KB).
Given the fact that your source refers to a portrait of John Maynard (KB) in the Strawberry Hill collection and that there is only one portrait of a "Sir John Maynard" on the Lewis Walpole Library's website, I think it's fair to assume that it's not John Maynard (KB)'s son.
Nice attention to detail, 45ossington.

Thanks Adam. Sounds annoying. I suppose they charge a little bit of cash for those pictures you see in books - or perhaps its just a matter of principle! How do you do a google picture search? Fainites barley 08:23, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Listy of Canadian Heads of State[edit]

Ambox warning yellow.svg

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Listy of Canadian Heads of State, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

Implausible typo, with no incoming links

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Pictures in governor lists[edit]

FLC has made it clear that they only want pictures in the list itself if we have a full suite of pictures; I happen to agree. It makes the rows randomly wide and narrow. --Golbez (talk) 05:54, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

Why do you revert me without giving a reason? I gave you a reason. --Golbez (talk) 18:26, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
Very well; I'm forced to escalate this. You are reverting without giving any justification whatsoever. --Golbez (talk) 17:13, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Edit warring on List of Governors of California and List of Governors of Pennsylvania[edit]

You appear to be currently engaged in an edit war on these articles. When you are reverting another editor's edits, you are expected to discuss the issue with them to come to a consensus on the matter. From what I've seen, you appear to be deliberately ignoring User:Golbez's attempts to do so. Edit warring, such as you are doing, is considered to be disruptive, even if it takes place over an extended period of time. I am asking you at this time to stop reverting edits on these articles until you have come to some sort of a consensus on the layout of the articles and the fair use rationales for some of the images you have been adding. Continuing to revert these articles without discussion will result in a temporary block. Please stop now. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Thank you. Hersfold (t/a/c) 17:47, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

In general, that is best, yes, and if you could hold the discussion there that would be great; although a note on the article talk page doesn't leave you with the orange bar of doom. Anyway, good to hear you got the message, and sorry if I sounded like too much of an evil admin there. :-) Hersfold (t/a/c) 03:12, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

FLC = Featured List Candidates. Several of these lists had partial portrait selections in the list itself, and they suggested it was better to only do that if a full suite of pictures was available. --Golbez (talk) 03:30, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

I can't find a single location, I'm sure it was a synthesis of comments from multiple locations, but this is how I recall it happening: I felt that having no pictures for some entries made the lists extremely ugly, with some cells much taller than others. I took all the pictures out and created the gallery. Someone didn't like this, so I tried putting them back in the list, but with the placeholder "no picture exists" images. Someone said this was frowned upon, so back to the gallery. The gallery approach has so far been accepted by FLC for nearly a dozen governor lists, including the most recent one, List of Governors of Indiana. There's no reason to make a massive change at this point without doing it at the same time as an FLC, to see if standards have changed; I still maintain they're ugly as hell. It should only be done, IMO, in situations where pictures are available for every single row. --Golbez (talk) 19:04, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

RFC:Criticism of the Roman Catholic Church[edit]

Thank you for your opinion on a reference that was used in Criticism of the Roman Catholic Church. Your wisdom was Solomonic inasmuch as it reflected what each side was seeing, both in good faith, but both uneducated. Your answer, surely, has resolved the misunderstanding once and for all. Need more recruits?[edit]

Just wanted to check with you on the delay in getting responses to RFChists. It is taking months. Requesting an RFC is like calling an extremely competent fire department, only to have them show up after the house has burned down! I realize that if I ask you what you were doing, the answer would be "putting out other fires!" I have a feeling that there are too few experts in your field and that is the problem. If you can suggest ways in which I can encourage more volunteers (Village Pump?), please let me know. Wikipedia really needs to address this insufficiency. Thanks again for your help. Speedy deletion of Augustus, Count Palatine of Sulzbach[edit]

Ambox warning pn.svg

A tag has been placed on Augustus, Count Palatine of Sulzbach requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. -Zeus- (t|c) 02:39, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

Palatine Birkenfelders and Sponheim[edit]

Hi Adam sk, I see you have been bringing content from wikia, which is nice. You seem to have missed the wikipedia article "House of Palatinate-Birkenfeld". This has been the topic of discussion in the German wikipedia, Palatinate-(Zweibrücken-)Birkenfeld was not really much of a state in itself, but more of a dinasty which ruled upon portion of the "County of Sponheim". I actually think we can keep both articles, it doesn't really bother me, I just thought I'd let you know that another article exists. Thanks. Properusername (talk) 09:51, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

Which leaders to list in Canada infobox?[edit]

Because of some of the harsher responses you got to your question Which leaders? on the Canada article talk page, I just wanted to thank you for bringing up some good points and asking an interesting question of the separation of powers in Canada. I also find it useful to look at different articles to see if some organization or presentation from one can be used to improve the other. For example, the US article's infobox lists government type as Federal constitutional republic but the Canada article's infobox lists government as Federal parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy. I don't like this mismatch - the US gov't type says nothing about the relationship between the executive and legislative branch (i.e. presidential vs parliamentary system), but the Canada gov't type does comment on this aspect. For example, both the US and Germany are federal constitutional republics, but Germany is a parliamentary democracy and the US is not. To be analogous, either the Canada infobox gov't type should just say Federal constitutional monarchy or the US infobox gov't type should say Federal constitutional presidential republic. I've tried changing the Canada infobox to say simply Federal constitutional monarchy in the past, but this didn't go over well. Maybe the US article should be updated to say Federal constitutional presidential republic or Federal presidential democracy and constitutional republic?

As you said in the Canada talk page, the Queen, governor general, and prime minister are all listed in the Canada infobox and they are part of the executive branch, but what about the heads of the legislative and judicial branches? Are those branches separate enough in the Canadian system to warrant their heads also being listed? I think that's an excellent question and a good suggestion. I would say that the separation of powers between the judicial branch and the other two branches are definitely as large in the Canadian system as in the US one. But by the defining nature of a parliamentary system, there is a dependency between the government (what Americans call the executive branch) and the parliament (legislative branch) - the government (prime minister plus cabinet) must maintain the confidence of the House of Commons, meaning that if the House of Commons votes that it does not have confidence in the government or if they refuse to pass the government's proposed budget, then the government is removed from power and either a new one from a different party is appointed or (much likelier) there is a new election. So in this way Parliament is supreme over the government, but the seemingly paradoxical effect of this is that usually the government can get any agenda they want passed through parliament when the government's party has a majority of MPs in the House of Commons. The executive and legislative branches in Canada are separate branches - the government can exercise certain powers, make many appointments, and has big royal prerogatives that it can exercise without parliamentary approval - but at any time Parliament can press the "kill switch", so certainly the separation of powers between Parliament and the government are not as "advanced" as in the US.

So by analogy to the US article's infobox, the separation of powers in Canada justifies putting the head of the judicial branch in the infobox, and it is not clear if putting the head of the legislative branch in the Canada infobox is justified. The de facto head of the judicial branch is easy to identify - the Chief Justice, who in one sense is an even more important position in Canada than in the US, since the US Supreme Court sits atop the federal court hierarchy and decides constitutional cases, but the Supreme Court of Canada sits atop the hierarchy of all federal and provincial courts. The de facto head(s) of the legislative branch is much more difficult for me to identify. The Leader of the Government in the Senate and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons work to plan and manage the legislative agenda, but the prime minister and cabinet really make the big decisions to set the agenda. And the Speaker of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Commons preside over debates and proceedings (in a very non-partisan way) and ceremoniously act as the representative for their entire chamber to outside groups/branches. Ah... but the United States article infobox does not list the de facto heads - it lists the de jure heads, as shown by its listing of the Vice President and not the Senate Majority Leader. The Vice President's role as President of the Senate is very much just a ceremonial role, aside from casting a tie-breaking vote. So if we were to follow this example in the Canada article infobox, identifying the de jure heads of the legislative and judicial branches is very easy. The Queen is the de jure head of each branch: she is one of the three branches of the federal parliament and is considered the fount of justice - prosecutions are made in her name and judges make rulings and administer justice on her behalf. So I think that the current infobox for this article is about as close to the US infobox as the Canadian system allows, even taking into account the amount of separation of powers between the branches, which is quite large in the case of the judicial branch. --thirty-seven (talk) 05:03, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

John Boswell[edit]

Hi Adam sk. While reading the rather epic discussion of the Rick Warren article, I saw your comment that you haven't seen a work by a reputable scholar that disagrees with the view that the traditional Christian position on homosexuality has been unchanging. If this is an area of interest for you, check out the late Yale prof John Boswell, who won the American Book Award for a book of historical research that casts doubt on that view. Nonetheless it does seem that in recent centuries the position has been pretty steady.... Benccc (talk) 05:42, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

Notability[edit]

I'd appreciate it if you could avoid accusations such as the one you made on my talk page, per WP:NPA. Your assumption that everyone on WP has heard of this company is rather ludicrous, and, since you made no assertion of notability in the article, I'm not sure how you could have expected someone who has not heard of it to think that it might be notable. Tad Lincoln (talk) 04:55, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

If you have sources showing the fact that this company's seal appears on many art materials, then fine, I guess that would make it notable. The issue for both of these articles is sourcing. For the other one, do you have sources showing that the program is notable? The best way to show notability is to add some other sources besides the web pages of the articles subjects. Tad Lincoln (talk) 05:04, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
Fair enough. Might I suggest you mention the importance in of this company in the article, like how well-known the program might be, etc. That, in itself, would provide the article protection from speedy deletion based on the issue of notability. I'll remove the speedy tag. Good luck with your articles. Tad Lincoln (talk) 05:21, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

thanks for being awesome![edit]

I'm really excited to see that you've been contributing to WP:Hornbook. I'm sorry we haven't met yet. You're the first person to make contributions, but I'm looking forward to growing the list!

I'm a rising 3L in New York. Are you a law student? Would you like to add yourself to the list of contributors at WP:Hornbook?

In the short term, I'm developing casebook TOCs at an unrelated Userspace (User:JD Caselaw), just because I have this terrible anxiety that someone will accuse WP:Hornbook of infringing on copyrights. I think they're wrong, but I want to be prepared to wage the proper defense.

I will be taking a short (one week?) Wikibreak soon, but otherwise I am a devoted Wikipedian and I look forward to collaborating as much as you'd like.

Appeal for Foras[edit]

I would like to appeal to you to please consider using an alternate name for your entry (Forcas perhaps?). I have recently opened a landscape design business called Foras Studio. When we selected the name in March, our research certainly did not mention this figure in demonology. It is not my wish to obscure your Foras entry, but I prefer not being associated with demonology considering the nature of my business, where image perception is crucial to prospective clients. William Lyon Mackenzie[edit]

Hi Adam, is it really necessary to include hundreds of different references for the same page, as on the William Lyon Mackenzie article? It seems kind of pointless, and a misuse of the footnote template. Why not just include a single reference at the end? Or better yet, reference some actual books? Adam Bishop (talk) 04:42, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

Well, attempting to delete the page is a little extreme, isn't it. I apologize for my sarcasm; it was directed at the footnote template in general, not you, but that's my fault. Anyway, who cares if there is a stupid template...the article will be fine. You could just remove the template, it's not set in stone, it's not like Wikipedia has any real rules. File:John C Bowen.jpg[edit]

I notice you've tagged the above image as being in the public domain, but I'm not sure that it is. Its creator, Illingworth Kerr, died in 1989, so it's obviously not in the public domain by reason of the creator's death date. It could be in the public domain if it's subject to crown copyright and was published more than fifty years ago, but it's not clear to me that it is; that it was commissioned by the government does not mean that it was produced by the government, which is the requirement for crown copyright. Do you have any particular reason for believing that it is in the public domain? Steve Smith (talk) 19:59, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

Well, besides the issue of whether or not the copyright was held by the Crown (on which I remain unconvinced, but will do some digging) there's the question of publication: per 2.2 (1) (d) of the Copyright Act exhibiting a painting in public does not constitute publication; we'd need evidence that copies of it were made available to the public in or before 1958. I'm not one to require ironclad proof that a given work is in the public domain, but I think with this one there are too many question marks. Steve Smith (talk) 21:44, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Dr Sibthorpe[edit]

Ambox warning pn.svg

A tag has been placed on Dr Sibthorpe, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing no content to the reader. Please note that external links, "See also" section, book reference, category tag, template tag, interwiki link, rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article don't count as content. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content. You may wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, you can request that administrators wait a while for you to add contextual material. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}} to the page and state your intention on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Speedy deletion nomination of File:Comptia-logo.png[edit]

Ambox warning pn.svg

A tag has been placed on File:Comptia-logo.png requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.

your image[edit]

Fair use photos are not your own work. You cannot take copyrighted photos and then make a collage out of them and claim it to be your own work. Many of the photos in your collage are only used in wikipedia under a fair use claim. These are not free licensed under cc or gfdl or in pd, and hence your photo is a blatant copyright violation. Please do not reinsert it, otherwise I will report this to the admins. --WikiJoddha (talk) 10:47, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

Information.svg Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, we would like to remind you not to attack other editors, as you did on User talk:WikiJoddha. Please comment on the contributions and not the contributors. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. --WikiJoddha (talk) 17:46, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

Calling another user "an asshole" is against all norms of Wikipedia. Please do not use such words. You made a false claim about your photos, and your response shows that you do not know about copyright policies of Wikipedia. Unilateral revert is a valid reaction in case of such blatant copyright violation and false image ownership claims. I suggest that you take some time to learn the difference between a free licensed image and one used under fair use claim. If you make further personal attacks, I will definitely report your words and actions. --WikiJoddha (talk) 17:46, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

Ha ha ha, calling a copyright violation as such irritates you? :) Well, YOU made a false claim, YOU lied about "own work" when the images were not really your own or free. And removing such fake-licensed photos is "asshole behavior"? Then I'll happily be one. I will look into your other photos as well, since you seem to disregard copyright policies and cry "roadblocks" when these are pointed out. --WikiJoddha (talk) 17:54, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

As the uploader, it was your duty to see copyright was respected. Don't tell me you consider all "images from wikipedia" to be free ... :). I'll continue to be the "prick" and "asshole" in finding out copyright violations. I once again suggest that you look into Wikipedia's policies on fair use images. You do have or at least had a deep misunderstanding of that. Happy New Year. --WikiJoddha (talk) 18:07, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

Note about cut and paste move[edit]

Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you recently tried to give Thomas Dent a different title by copying its content and pasting it into Thomas Dent (writer). This is known as a "cut and paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is needed for attribution and various other purposes. Instead, the "Move" tab located at the top of the page should be used. It allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history. This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other articles that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen. Thank you. Well, I wasn't entirely sure how to categorize it either, so I looked at one or two other articles on Assistant Secretaries of the Navy, and they were categorized as "personnel". Re: Under Secretary of the Army[edit]

The reference I used is cited on the article. The US Army website used to host a list (I think it had biographies for each), but it went down when they redesigned thier public website. I've pulled it out of Internet Archive. Luckily, the bios are public domain work, so you can do a copy paste job with {{US Army}} until you can find more sources for each individual. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 14:31, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Images of British PMs[edit]

You seem to have replaced all the engraving-style illustrations of British PMs on the page List of Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom with paintings. Would you mind explaining why? The engraving-style illustrations were generally headshots, and therefore came out better on the list, matching the more modern headshot photographs. They also matched the black-and-white engravings of the mid-19th century, and the black-and-white photos c.1870-1976. The engravings of Canning and Peel in particular went very well with the list. All the best, BartBassist (talk) 19:46, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

That's much better - well done. Wilmington, Portland, Addington especially. I do still like the Peel engraving (it would mean that all the images in the Queen Victoria section would be uniformly black & white), but I won't revert it. My question now is about the W. E. Gladstone photo - he looks rather young in that photo - he was better known as the "Grand Old Man" portrayed in the photo used before. BartBassist (talk) 12:07, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
Also, when did Derby lose his facial fluff? BartBassist (talk) 12:10, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
Just to clarify, there were 2 PMs called Grenville, father and son. George Grenville (PM in the 1760s) and his son William Wyndham Grenville, Lord Grenville (PM 1806-7). I see that you've sorted it. BartBassist (talk) 11:59, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

You are now a Reviewer[edit]

Wikipedia Reviewer.svg

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 02:21, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

Simultaneum[edit]

You created Simultaneum. Not finding it, I created Simultankirche, which I moved to Shared church while working on it. I have now removed all text from the article I created, adding it to your page, which I will soon expand. How do I get the names Simultankirche and [[Shared church to redirect to Simultaneum? Also, I think Shared church is a better English term, following Benjamin J. Kaplan, and on the assumption that the article should cover this as a growing modern phenomenon, although for somewhat different reasons than in the early modern period. Speedy deletion nomination of File:American Tower Corporation Logo.jpg[edit]

A tag has been placed on File:American Tower Corporation Logo.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Speedy deletion nomination of Assistant Secretary of the Air Force[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Assistant Secretary of the Air Force requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a clear copyright infringement.

Adam,

It seems you are the designer of the CCMA logo. I have been tasked with using it on our new newsletter. But I only need the lettered CCMA not the rest of it. Would it be possible for you to send me a file that just has letters of CCMA so I can use it in AI? Let me know - right now all I have been given is a flattened jpeg that I cannot separate.

Any questions please don't hesitate to contact me.

Anselm Franz von Ingelheim (archbishop)[edit]

This is an automated message from VWBot. I have performed a search with the contents of Anselm Franz von Ingelheim (archbishop), and it appears to be very similar to another Wikipedia page: Anselm Franz von Ingelheim. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case. If you are intentionally trying to rename an article, please see Help:Moving a page for instructions on how to do this without copying and pasting. If you are trying to move or copy content from one article to a different one, please see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia and be sure you have acknowledged the duplication of material in an edit summary to preserve attribution history.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. VWBot (talk) 05:13, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

The page should have been moved instead of a cut and paste move. I noted this here and an administrator will conduct a history merge in the next few days.--NortyNort (Holla) 08:06, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

Hi. When you recently edited Adam Friedrich von Seinsheim, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Schönborn and Damian Hugo Philipp von Schönborn (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Karl Philipp von Greiffenclau zu Vollrads[edit]

Thank you for adding the equivalent to Karl Philipp von Greiffenclau zu Vollrads! I don't understand why the name is different from the German and Italian one. General remark: please establish a link to the article(s) in other languages. (I did it for this one.) Please DO NOT use other Wikipedias as a reference, in English it needs inline citations to independent sources. (I learned it the hard way when I translated Siegfried Palm.) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:38, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

I followed catholic-hierarchy.org in using the name "Karl Philipp von Greiffenclau zu Vollrads". I agree that other Wikipedias are not the best source, but I don't really have access to any other sources, and I think that all these prince-bishops deserve Wikipedia articles, so I don't know any better way. I like to think that it's not that big a deal if the article cites to the foreign-language Wikipedia article because readers can always consult the foreign-language Wikipedia article to determine if they find it credible. Adam sk (talk) 00:45, 14 January 2012 (UTC)
The name: in English it's "Vollraths", in German and Italian it's "Vollrads", I wonder why. The interwiki-links don't need to be mentioned as "references" (which they are not anyway). The articles in other languages are listed on the left, "Languages", for readers to consult. I recommend you go through articles you created and establish those links (and possibly drop them in the "references", I didn't go that far). I have no time to do that for you. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:39, 14 January 2012 (UTC)

Francesco Conti (painter)[edit]

This is an automated message from MadmanBot. I have performed a search with the contents of Francesco Conti (painter), and it appears to be very similar to another Wikipedia page: Francesco Conti.

MadmanBot (talk) 06:28, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

In future, if you want to replace an existing article with a disambiguation page, then move the existing article to a new title and replace the redirect with the new disambiguation page. Don't just copy and paste the content, that destroys the edit history (which we need to keep for legal reasons). Hut 8.5 10:52, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

This is an automated message from MadmanBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Esteban Gabriel Merino, and it appears to be a substantial copy of http://www2.fiu.edu/~mirandas/bios1533.htm.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.

If substantial content is duplicated and it is not public domain or available under a compatible license, it will be deleted. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material. Image of John Morton (bishop)[edit]

Hello,

I've looked at your image of John Morton (bishop), that you recently added to the page. Looking at the web page you got it from - here - I believe the image is of Bishop Cox, not Morton at all. Therefore, I've removed it from the page. If you disagree with me, just let me know.

Thanks,

Cardinals wear/wore red galeros. Since Bishop Cox was not a cardinal it is, going by the source, to be Cardinal Morton. I've reinstated the image and placed the coat of arms at the bottom of infobox in John Morton's page. It would be interesting to know where the glass image actually comes from. Wesley Schultz and Ramsey, New Jersey[edit]

I made some tweaks to the article for Wesley Schultz, mostly combining common sources into a single reference. You had the source needed to establish that Schultz had been a resident of Ramsey, New Jersey, and all you need to add in the future is to be sure to include the appropriate source in both articles; both in the article about the person showing that he lived in the place, and in the article for the place as well. Please feel free to contact me on my talk page with any questions. Alansohn (talk) 20:57, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of File:Ctia logo.jpg[edit]

A tag has been placed on File:Ctia logo.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Orphaned non-free media (File:Salem Communications Logo.gif)[edit]

Ambox warning blue.svg Thanks for uploading File:Salem Communications Logo.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:05, 16 December 2012 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Art & Creative Materials Institute[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Art & Creative Materials Institute, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Speedy deletion nomination of Henry of Isenburg-Covern[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Henry of Isenburg-Covern requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. JustBerry (talk) 02:58, 30 April 2015 (UTC)

ArbCom elections are now open![edit]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Proposed deletion of Luis de Aliaga Martínez[edit]

Ambox warning yellow.svg

The article Luis de Aliaga Martínez has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This article is merely a translation of its corresponding Spanish article, violating English WP requirements.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
