Please review DYK nomination

Hi, Richard. I wonder if you could review our DYK nomination for the new article Honey Queen Program our students created at Vassar College as part of a curricular project. Thanks! Wikipedia Loves Libraries

Hi. I hope you're doing well. I am looking forward to the NYPL event, but what are we planning to do? Is it an editathon, a teaching event, lectures, all of the above? Is there a planning page? If so, could you link it at Wikipedia Loves Libraries#Northeast? Thanks! -- Ssilvers (talk) 18:02, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

User:Nemo_bis told me that you are currently maintaining it and it consist mostly of Javascript running on the toolserver. I'm going to ask one of our it.wiki's JS wizards to help me in implementing it. May you help us?. Thanks in advance. -- CristianCantoro (talk) 18:15, 12 September 2011 (UTC) p.s.: please answer me (in English, of course) on my it.wiki talk page, thank you.[reply]

He is a polymer chemist and has been really interested in the work we were doing here at Michigan and would like to do the same at SUNY-ESF this semester. Can we have some of the Syracuse Ambassadors take on his course as well? Thanks! MichChemGSI (talk) 14:21, 15 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

So I was looking

at the Wikipedia:Wikipedia Loves Libraries, specifically at the event posted for the Embudo Valley Library and thought to myself, "Gee Einar, You're even better than I thought. I don't even remember how I managed to link this to the little blurb I put on our website. I'm impressed with me." However upon closer inspection I discovered that it appeared to be you who did it. All those things that i said about myself - well they are all now pointed at you, squared. Very nice work and thank you very much. Feel free to drop in. Wikipedia:The Musical in NYC

You are invited to Wikipedia:The Musical in NYC, an editathon, Wikipedia meet-up and lectures that will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2011, at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts (at Lincoln Center), as part of the Wikipedia Loves Libraries events being held across the USA.

All are welcome, sign up on the wiki and here!--Pharos (talk) 04:50, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think the event was a decided success, with at least half a dozen total newbies learning the ropes, and another dozen Wikipedians finding materials that they would not otherwise have had access to. I expanded the article on The Boy (musical) together with one of my trainees (User:Annveal), and we moved it from Stub class to at least Start class. Both of my trainees also got practical experience making edits and adding refs to articles that they selected. I really think that training-oriented sessions at the libraries are a great way to try to get new people involved in WP. An interesting thing that one of my trainees told me is that she was hesitant to edit, for fear that she would make a mistake, and also worried that other editors would criticize what she had done. The male trainee had no fears like that. I wonder if one of the reasons for the reluctance of women to join the WP project is that they are, in general, more risk-averse regarding editing. Obviously, there are lots of exceptions, but this was a very stark contrast in my two trainees yesterday. All the best! -- Ssilvers (talk)

Hi Pharos! Thanks for putting together the Wikipedia Loves Library event in NYC. It'd be grand to have a report about it (no matter how short or long) for This Month in GLAM. I do hope you or another attendee can provide a description of how the event went, outcomes and perhaps images (with links to any Wiki space). Please visit here and contribute if you can. It can be in the main features or the briefly section. Thanks again for coordinating the event :) SarahStierch (talk) 20:43, 31 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello

Hi Pharos, Just wanted to let you know that I am partially incapacitated because I ruptured the ACL in my left knee two months ago. I'm still in a brace, and my life currently consists of exercising and napping with little bits of Wikipedia in between! Best wishes, Invertzoo (talk) 14:00, 3 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

thanks for you kind words

following my complete failure as a wikipedia workshop organizer. I was not really trying to draw experienced editors, rather was hoping to work with a few locals. Were I to try and do a wikigathering I would first attempt to get a venue in Santa Fe because, it is already a destination for a lot of folks. I had not really given that idea any thought - now I will. You seem to be a New Yorker, probably lots of wikipedians out there. Life is supposed to be interesting and it pretty much lives up to billing. Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 02:32, 5 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Danish Modern furniture at MOMA

Hello Pharos. As resident Wikipedian at MoMA, you may be able to help out with photos of Danish Modern furniture. I visited MoMA a couple of years ago but my photos are not detailed enough to illustrate the article we are developing on Danish modern and the biographies of related designers. I realize there are already a few overviews of the exhibition of modern furniture and design on Commons but what we really need are individual shots: chairs, tables, lamps or whatever. You will get a better idea of what we are looking for if you look at the Danish modern article itself. Perhaps you or one of your colleagues could help out by photographing a few of the exhibits and uploading them onto Commons. Basic info should include the name of the designer, the year designed and the designation of the object. - Ipigott (talk) 10:27, 8 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

About your notices

Hi there! I'm not a capitol-area wikipedian. Please discontinue sending me information about such events. I do consider myself a Hudson Valley resident, just like those who live in Yonkers might consider themselves so. I am interested in NYC-based events, though my recent involvement in Wikipedia has declined due to lack of gumption. Thanks for your efforts, and please don't consider this negative feedback any form of criticism. BusterD (talk) 10:49, 22 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm getting emails from people I never gave my email address to. Please ask these folks to take me off the mailing list. This is a disappointing development. BusterD (talk) 02:42, 23 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This will be a casual working event in which Wikipedians are getting together to scan interesting documents at the National Archives related to a different theme each day—currently: spaceflight, women's suffrage, Chile, and battleships—for use on Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons. The event is being held on multiple days, and in the evenings and weekend, so that as many locals and out-of-towners from nearby regions1 as possible can come. Please join us! Problem with IP editor

Hi. I really need some administrator-to-administrator advice. Can you offer your opinions on Question 2 - 5 that I've posed at the top of this discussion?

Everyone else participating there is only focusing on Question 1, which I thought would be answered more quickly and straightforwardly, and is already being discussed at Talk:Kobe Bryant sexual assault case If you want to offer your insights on Question 1 as well, can you do so there? Thanks! Nightscream (talk) 05:10, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The New Yorker

Congratulations Richard, you made page 19 of the New Yorker! Invertzoo (talk) 23:39, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Really? Congratulations, dude! What issue/cover date is that? I couldn't find it through a Google search. Nightscream (talk) 04:20, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The upcoming Meetup

Richard, I'd like to start a campaign to do away with unregistered IP editing, and would like to take advantage of the upcoming Meetup to do so. How should I go about this? Do I need to reserve a talk, or something? Or should I pass around a petition or start a page for it? Nightscream (talk) 04:20, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The best thing for this type of topic would probably be to add it as a lightning talk here: Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Wikipedia Day#Lightning Talks.--Pharos (talk) 17:59, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Are the lightning talks those ones that I partipated in last year, from which I got the free TV shirt? If so, then rather than repeat myself, I'd like to actually implement this. How do I go about doing so? Nightscream (talk) 01:51, 27 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, yeah, that was your talk topic last year. I guess to try to implement something like this you would make a proposal page on-wiki, and you could possibly invite people to an open space group discussion session if enough people are interested. BTW, I actually rather disagree on this one, but that's why we talk about stuff :)--Pharos (talk) 02:21, 27 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Interview?

My apologies for the non-personalized note; I've got several people to contact here. We're looking for administrators who would be willing to be interviewed by students as a part of Wikipedia's WP:United States Education Program. Dr. Jonathan Obar is teaching the course, and it's a study in how Wikipedia is governed and how administrators are selected. If you're not interested, you may either ignore this invitation or remove your name from the list of admins we've contacted. MSU Interview

Dear Pharos,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 17:54, 7 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

question about coverage of education program in the Signpost

Hi,

Re: Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2012-03-12/Education report, Skomorokh suggested I contact you regarding my questions.

Is the Signpost Education section meant to be a Wikipedia Education report or a Wikimedia Education report? I notice that most of the information in the new education article doesn't have much to do with the en:wp community, and the seven editors chosen in the report as "pilot students" have done little if any editing on the en:wp. (Check their contributions.)

This new article focused on projects that take place off en:wp. Meanwhile, the US/Canada Education Program has started on the en:wp with little sign that the massive problems it encountered during the Fall semester have been addressed. For example, one editor on the "Online Ambassadors Steering Committee" was responsible for many of the problems. She submitted an article for Good article review on en:wp a few weeks ago that contained copyvio/plagiarism/close paraphrasing. When this was pointed out to her, she didn't understand the problems. (See Talk:Douglas W. Owsley/GA1)

Also, I suggest that you look through Wikipedia talk:United States Education Program/Archive 1 and Wikipedia talk:United States Education Program/Archive 2 and search for "cindy" you will get an inkling of the degree her approach disrupted the en:wp community.

Yet this editor is still a member of the Online Ambassador Selection Committee.

I have attempted to obtain more information about Online Ambassador Selection, as have others, but have run against a brick wall. See: User talk Moonriddengirl aka Mdennis(WMF) suggested I contact you I've learned that there is no one to contact that supervises the Online Ambassador Selection Committee, and no way to learn what's going on.

I'm hoping that the "Education report" will contain information helpful for editors on en:wp. Will this be possible? Or is the coverage only going to be of off site activities that are not directed at the en:wp editing community?

Thanks, MathewTownsend (talk) 13:53, 9 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Social connections

Thanks for posting on my page to tell me about that Wikipedia Loves Libraries meetup the next city over. I am not sure what I think about the fact that it is possible for people to be organizing nearby events and for people to not necessarily know that they are happening. I wrote to the people organizing it and it seems like we will stay in touch.

I came here to ask you for advice about who I should contact for User:MathewTownsend's problem, but I see that he just came to you above. I feel like when Wikipedia editors take on public presentation roles and seem to be getting a Wikipedia community endorsement then any complaints about them ought to be fielded efficiently with the most possible care, and Mathew has has already put a lot of effort into trying to be heard without getting a sufficient response. I want to put this on the discussion agenda for the next IRC chat, but in the meantime, can you think of who else I could ask for advice on handling this? Signpost in other languages

Hi,

I was unaware that the Signpost was translated into other languages and disseminated to other wikis. Thanks for the information. I guess the feedback from the Foundation and other language communities are screen out from our en:wp, and the articles they write are also screened out, as all articles I've ever seen are written by en:wp editors. Thanks for that information also. (I wonder how all that works.) I was interested to see that the seven editors you mention in your article don't edit on en:wp. Perhaps you could add to the article where they do edit? Or is it your view that the main action of en:wp and other wikis is not on the encyclopedia but in meet ups and other off site activities? That would justify such a long article that actually includes very few people that contribute directly to the encyclopedia. (Guess that explains why editor contributions to en:wp is dwindling - they're just not important.) Thanks, MathewTownsend (talk) 17:41, 12 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

p.s. Could you explain what WASC is? Thanks, MathewTownsend (talk) 17:55, 12 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Like I said, the Signpost includes many topics under its remit, both English and other languages, both Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects, and both online and real-life activities. WASC is just an acronym for the Wikipedia Ambassador Steering Committee.--Pharos (talk) 01:20, 16 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Is it distributed to other languages? Wikipedia:Ambassadors/Steering Committee seems to cover only the US and Canada. And there is a dearth of material reported in the Signpost on the happening of that committee. MathewTownsend (talk) 01:33, 16 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Videos, NC, GLAM, big project

Please check out Wikipedia:GLAM/smarthistory and consider signing up! After checking around, I see that you are the man on videos, but that videos have gone nowhere on Wikipedia for 2 years. This might be a chance to change that.

Short version: Smarthistory, part of Khan Academy, has 300+ completely non-profit educate-the-world-for-free, totally on point, directly parallel to our articles video, completely free (except with an NC license) expert art interpretation video. For the ones where we have a separate article on the artwork, and they have the equivalent video just on that artwork (the large majority), I don't want to bury the video under external links (usually the last place people look). Any idea of how to properly display?

Any help welcome.

Wikipedia Ambassadors update

Hi! You're getting this message because you are or have been a Wikipedia Ambassador. A new term is beginning for the United States and Canada Education Programs, and I wanted to give you an update on some important new information if you're interested in continuing your work this term as a Wikipedia Ambassador.

You may have heard a reference to a transition the education program is going through. This is the last term that the Wikimedia Foundation will directly run the U.S. and Canada programs; beginning in June, a proposed thematic organization is likely to take over organizing the program. You can read more about the proposal here.

Another major change in the program will take effect immediately. Beginning this term, a new MediaWiki education extension will replace all course pages and Ambassador lists. (See Wikipedia:Course pages and Help:Education Program extension for more details.) Included in the extension are online volunteer and campus volunteer user rights, which let you create and edit course pages and sign up as an ambassador for a particular course.

If you would like to continue serving as a Wikipedia Ambassador — even if you do not support a class this term — you must create an ambassador profile. If you're no longer interested in being a Wikipedia Ambassador, you don't need to do anything.

Please do these steps as soon as possible

First, you need the relevant user rights for Online and/or Campus Ambassadors. (If you are an admin, you can grant the rights yourself, for you as well as other ambassadors.) Just post your rights request here, and we'll get you set up as quickly as possible.

Once you've got the ambassador rights, please set up at a Campus and/or Online Ambassador profile. You can do so at:

Going forward, the lists of Ambassadors at Special:CampusAmbassadors and Special:OnlineAmbassadors will be the official roster of who is an active Ambassador. If you would like to be an Ambassador but not ready to serve this term, you can un-check the option in your profile to publicly list it (which will remove your profile from the list).

After that, you can sign on to support courses. The list of courses will be at Special:Courses. (By default, this lists "Current" courses, but you can change the Status filter to "Planned" to see courses for this term that haven't reached their listed start date yet.)

As this is the first term we have used the extension, we know there will be some bugs, and we know the feature set is not as rich as it could be. (A big wave of improvements is already in the pipeline. And if you know MediaWiki and could help with code review, we'd love to have your help!) Please reach out to me (Sage Ross) with any complaints, bug reports, and feature suggestions. The basic features of the extension are documented at Wikipedia:Course pages, and you can see a tutorial for setting up and using them here.

Communication and keeping up to date

In the past, the Education Program has had a pretty fragmented set of communication channels. We're trying to fix that. These are the recommended places to discuss and stay up-to-date on the education program:

  1. The education noticeboard has become the main on-wiki location for discussion of the Education Program. You can post there about broad education program issues as well as issues with individual courses.
  2. The Ambassadors Announce email list is a very low-traffic announcements list of important information all Ambassadors need to be aware of. We encourage all Ambassadors (and other interested Wikipedians) to subscribe to the list; follow the instructions on the link to add your email address.
  3. If you use IRC regularly, or need to try to reach someone immediately, the #wikipedia-en-ambassadors connect IRC channel is the place to find me and fellow Ambassadors.
Ambassador training and resources

We now have an online training for Ambassadors, which is intended to be both an orientation about the Wikipedia Ambassador role for newcomers and the manual for how to do the role. (There are parallel trainings for students and for educators as well.)

Please go through the training if you feel like you need a refresher on how a typical class is supposed to go and where the Ambassadors fit in, or if you want to review and help improve it. If there's something you'd like to see added, or other suggestions you have for it, feel free to edit the training and/or leave feedback. A primer on setting up and using course pages is included in the educators' training.

The Resources page of the training is the main place for Ambassador-related resources. If there's something you think is important as a resource that's not on there, please add it.

Finally, whether or not you work with any classes this term, I encourage you to post entries to the Trophy Case whenever you see excellent work from students or if you have great examples from past semesters. And, as always, let students (and other editors!) know when they do things well; a little WikiLove goes a long way!

ASL annotation to video

Hi, Pharos!

I found meta:Requests for new languages/Wikipedia American Sign Language 2 and I wonder what the best way is to add an ASL annotation to File:Sextortionagent interview.ogg, a sound file about sextortion. Giving The Devil His Due

I don't know if you saw my response on the Sammy Davis Jr. talk page. His involvement with LeVay Satanism is not insignificant and sourceable by Davis' own autobiography. Growing up in the 70s it was a well-known urban legend that Davis was a Satanist; apparently this is still going on. How any of this relates to Poor Devil idk. Never heard Levay gave him an award, but there seems to be sufficient evidence that he did participate, or at the very least was present at meetings of the coven. Perhaps a blurb about this in the article with the WP:RS can set the record straight about this peculiar incident in his life. --Wlmg (talk) 19:19, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Survey on Wikimedia Chapters

Hi Pharos,

I would like to invite you and your chapter to take a part in a survey on WM Chapters. As I briefly explained there, it is an effort agreed during WCA meetings, taken to start gathering information about us and present it visibly. For the moment, information about chapters is scattered, and often missing - and even people wanting to highlight the chapters, build more bridges between them, create some benchmarks and share solutions are lacking data about all the local entities. Please help me in showing your Chapter! :)

First presentation will be given in Hong Kong. Further hopefully will come.

I know it is an additional work and the survey is far from being perfect, but someone needed to start it. Survey can be responded on a dedicated meta subpage or in other form if it is more suitable for the chapter. Your subpage is here.

Thanks for your help!

The Unvisited App

Hi, this is the guy that takes all the pictures... Here's the link on google play to the app I'm writing. It's purpose is to find articles with coordinates but that don't have pictures, and plan routes to get as many pictures as possible in a short time. It's still kind of a beta version, so I welcome feedback from anyone. I can also generate and email itineraries if anyone needs one.

Unvisited

Here's an example of a 6 mile Brooklyn walk generated by the app. Clicking he 'tour' link displays the tour in google maps.

John Phelan Faolin42 (talk) 22:28, 21 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Is the app region locked? Can't download it. Unsure where Google play users position (Hong Kong) or country associated with account (Sweden) but either way...
Also (of it doesn'talready exist) would it be possible to add a setting to change which language version of wikipedia it looks at? Lokal_Profil 18:30, 6 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Whoops. I didn't enable it for enough countries. I just went in and enabled it for all countries, but it might take a few hours to take effect. Maybe try again tomorrow?

And you're right. I should have a setting for which language version of wikipedia it looks at. I'll put that on my todo list. What language are you specifically interested in? (If it's annoying to Pharos, we can move the discussion to my talk page) Faolin42 (talk) 22:46, 6 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks. Have now installed and tried it. Really nice, instantly found some tours around Hong Kong. Will try it out more in the following days. Specifically I was interested in the Swedish (sv.wiki) language since we often try to organise photo safaris. (Can shift to your talk page if Pharos wants). /Lokal_Profil 05:11, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. A user named Canoe1967 keeps reverting the Rick Remender article, despite the fact that a consensus discussion on the disputed portion of it is still ongoing, and despite the fact that he has been informed that this is edit warring, and is a blockable offense. I tried to protecting the article, but a complaint was made that I'm not an uninvolved admin. Can you protect the article for a couple of weeks, and if he reverts it again, block him if necessary? Thank you. Nightscream (talk) 16:59, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please check my recent change at Wikipedia:Wikipedia Takes America ‎ (a bit different). I think I could approve the pending change myself - but I wanted to check with you (since it is a bit different!). The important thing to get across here is that this contest is from WP:NRHP, and essentially unrelated to the "Best photo" contest of WLM-US. It's just for fun and barnstars. Saint Peter's invite

Pharos, Thanks so much for the invitation. I took a look at the course description and I think that Jersey City, New Jersey would be an excellent model for this type of course. The city is large and old enough to have many events, sites, neighborhoods, people and other potential article subjects, it's covered in adequate detail that there is a foundation to build on, while leaving enough subjects that are available for expansion and creation. I'm based in Teaneck, but Jersey City is accessible and I would be happy to participate in any way that I can. Feel free to reach me via my talk page or by email. Thanks again for thinking of me. Joaquín Ibarra has a Spanish Wikipedia page which I would like to translate and add more information on. Hello Pharos! My name is Elizabeth and I'm part of the Cornell University/Online Communities (Fall 2013) Wikipedia Education program. I'm working with my group members Shelby and Sarah to improve the page on Disney's Pocahontas film. We wanted to put some more media on the page, as well as validate the media that is already there. The talk page of Pocahontas mentions that the fair use explanation of the existing photos is missing. How can we make sure that the images are fair use as well as add some new ones? We have explored the Wikimedia Commons but cannot find any photos relating to the movie, only photos relating to the history figure Pocahontas. Any suggestions/tips?

Help test better mass message delivery

Hi. You're being contacted as you've previously used global message delivery (or its English Wikipedia counterpart). It doesn't feel so great to be spammed, does it? ;-)

For the past few months, Legoktm has built a replacement to the current message delivery system called MassMessage. MassMessage uses a proper user interface form (no more editing a /Spam subpage), works faster (it can complete a large delivery in minutes), and no longer requires being on an access list (any local administrator can use it). In addition, many tiny annoyances with the old system have been addressed. It's a real improvement! :-)

You can test out MassMessage here: testwiki:Special:MassMessage. The biggest difference you'll likely notice is that any input list must use a new {{#target:}} parser function. For example, {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales}} or {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales|test2.wikipedia.org}}. For detailed instructions, check out mw:Help:Extension:MassMessage.

If you find any bugs, have suggestions for additional features, or have any other feedback, drop a note at m:Talk:MassMessage. Thanks for spamming! --MZMcBride (talk) 05:21, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

New features for course pages

Several noticeable improvements to the EducationProgram extension (in addition to some small bug fixes) will go live on or around 2014-01-23:

Notifications

All participants in a course (students, instructors, volunteers) will receive Notifications whenever their course talk page is edited. Thus, editors can use course talk pages to send messages they want the whole class to be aware of, and the class participants are likely to see them.

Special:Contributions student notice

For users enrolled as students in courses that are active, a notice will appear at the top of Special:Contributions noting which course(s) they are enrolled in. This will make it easy for users who come across the work of student editors to find out that they are part of a course and identify other class participants.

Adding articles

Course instructors and volunteers will be able to assign articles to student editors, instead of all articles needing to be added by the student editors themselves.

Adding students

Instructors and volunteers will be able to add users as students in courses, instead of all student editors needing to enroll for themselves. This makes it easier to maintain complete lists of students, and also makes the extension more suitable for tracking participation in edit-a-thons, workshops and other collaborative projects beyond the Wikipedia Education Program.

Brooklyn?

Pharos, I did not create a separate ArtAndFeminism meetup page for Brooklyn, as I was not sure of the history in Brooklyn and whether or not it was under the Meetup/NYC umbrella. If you would like, I could create Wikipedia:Meetup/Brooklyn/ArtAndFeminism 2014. --Another Believer (Talk) 20:42, 27 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome!

Hello Pharos (talk). I am so tickled that you are joining our class! :-) The timeline/grading is still very much in progress--I'll shoot you a message sometime next week when it's in better shape so you can let me know everything I am forgetting. :-) I am crossing my fingers that everything runs smoothly, as I would like to set this up as a regular course/courses and maybe sell the concept to my colleagues. Education Program technical update, February 2014

We've started working on "editor campaigns", a system that we expect will eventually be able to replace our current Education Program extension (and be useful for many other purposes as well). The early work with that project will focus on a system for signup up new editors for editing campaigns (such as courses, but also edit-a-thons, Wiki Loves Monuments, etc.). Because of that, progress will be slow on the current course page system. However, we have several improvements that should be available within the next few weeks.

Anyone can edit the main text of course pages

As part of the effort to make course pages behave more like regular wiki pages, we've enabled editing of course pages by anyone. Users who currently have the right to edit courses will have access to all the fields (so that they can change the start/end dates, and change the enrollment token). Users who currently cannot edit courses will be able to edit only the "page text" portion. This change should take effect on 2014-02-27.

Simplified course editing interface

We've considerably simplified the interface for editing course pages, removing the options to rename courses. Changing the title of a course would also move the course page, creating confusion and leading to a number of bugs. Several other parts of the course editing interface were not very useful, so we've removed them to make it easier on newcomers. This change should take effect on 2014-02-27.

Additional Notifications

Two students participating in the Facebook Open Academy mentorship program are currently working on additional Notifications for course pages. For the first of these, users will be notified whenever someone else adds them to a course.

Once again, if you have feedback about these new features, or other questions or ideas related to course pages, please let me know!--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 17:38, 21 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

March 2014

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Estelle Freedman may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "[]"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:
  • Award Recipients: Nancy Lyman Roelker Mentorship Award |accessdate=11 August 2013}}</ref> and the [[[Millicent Carey McIntosh|Millicent McIntosh]] Award for Feminism from [[Barnard College]].<ref>{{

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, BracketBot (talk) 22:40, 4 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Edit-a-thon question

Hi Pharos,

I work at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA. We're looking forward to hosting our first edit-a-thon later this spring! I'd like to create a project page for PEM on the GLAM Wiki site, but I'm having some trouble. Is this something that only an administrator can do?

I'd really appreciate your help and advice getting started.

Thanks! Cathypem (talk) 20:33, 11 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

An exciting month of wiki events!

Hello there,

I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.

First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.

On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.

The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.

There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!

All the best,
James Hare
