Please use one of the strings below to post your DYK nomination, using the "author" and "nominator" fields to identify the users who should receive credit for their contributions if the hook is featured on the main page.

How to review a nomination

Any editor who was not involved in writing/expanding or nominating an article may review it by checking to see that the article meets all the DYK criteria (long enough, new enough, no serious editorial or content issues) and the hook is cited. Editors may also alter the suggested hook to improve it, or may suggest new hooks. For a more detailed discussion of the DYK rules and review process see the additional rules.

If you want to confirm that an article is ready to be placed on a later update, or note that there is an issue with the article or hook, please use the following symbols to point the issues out:

Backlogged?

This page is often backlogged. As long as your submission is still on the page, it will stay there until an editor reviews it. Since editors are encouraged to review the oldest submissions first (so that those hooks don't grow stale), it may take several days until your submission is reviewed. In the meantime, please consider reviewing another submission (not your own) to help reduce the backlog (see instructions above).

Where is my hook?

If you can't find the hook you submitted to this page, in most cases it means your article has been approved and is in the queue for display on the main page. You can check whether your hook has been moved to the queue by reviewing the queue listings.

If your hook is not in the queue or already on the main page, it has probably been deleted. Deletion occurs if the hook is more than about eight days old and has unresolved issues for which any discussion has gone stale. If you think your hook has been unfairly deleted, you can query its deletion on the discussion page, but as a general rule deleted hooks will only be restored in exceptional circumstances.

  • I've taken a look at template:cite court. I despise this template because it neither helps the unfamiliar reader, nor follows the Bluebook. It diverges from the Bluebook, inter alia, by including "p." for page numbers and by not placing explanatory quotations in parentheticals (and by placing them outside the period). The fact that the core of the citation still uses the Bluebook leaves the reader with the worst of both worlds. An extremely dubious benefit, and at the high cost of abandoning WYSIWYG edit-ability. My view is that the link to the US Reports wiki article, and the external link to the full case at justia (as is standard in the SCOTUS template at the top right) is sufficient. This derives from the fact that there is a substantial overlap between: (1) those who would be interested in checking the citation; and (2) those would would understand the citation. Some articles turn all legal citations into bluelinks to "case citation" or to the specific reporter; in my view, this constitutes overlinking. Such links do little more than inform the reader that what is being cited is a judicial opinion, which is already quite manifest from the context. Savidan 20:45, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree; if this article goes onto the main page, then it will attract interest from those who have no idea what these citations mean. We can't make articles accessible only to people with knowledge in the area, but rather to everyone. Otherwise, my cricket articles could be full of jargon! I'm all for accessibility. Considering that the fullcite is given in the opening words of the article, I don't see much point in repeating that later on. In terms of linking to the text of the decision online, I support that in theory, but worry about showing undo preference to the many different cites which make such opinions available. The community has resolved this issue with ISBNs, but one could argue that solution is not much more accessible, considering how few users ultimately configure their preferences to be able to use the ISBN as an actual link. FWIW, I think the cites definitely need improving. If we don't allow bare urls to be used as references (which only look bad, but everyone knows what they are and how to access them) then we shouldn't allow an obscure format that few people understand. There is a link to Oyez Project, which includes the oral arguments and the text of the opinion. This site is about as user friendly as they come. With all due respect to Smartse, the use of legal citation style is already widespread on Wikipedia. Savidan, is there somewhere in MOS that it says "legal citation style" is acceptable? If so, I will concede this may be an argument better pursued elsewhere.   • I confess that even I am not exactly sure what the exact number comes to (143 years before Oneida I would have been 1831). But the article that this quote is coming from makes the point that Christy typifies the state of the law substantially before it. Hi. Please be slightly patient re. this one - I'm working on it. Another person (more of a maths guru) helped suggest that tag, as 'interesting' due to their age; and whilst it is partly verifiable through the ref at the end of the para, it is not entirely verifiable through the refs I have. I'm looking for more, and I'll seek help on the maths project, and try to improve the clarity a bit too. I will respond here within a couple of days. Not sure this is really "interesting to a wide audience." (WP:WIADYK) - I think you'd need to have at least a degree in maths to be able to make any sense of it (although there are pretty pictures!). Also the age seems 100% normal to me - if it was age 18 or 80 then it might be interesting, but 37 seems like the age at which I would expect mathmaticians to discover something. I suggested the tag, and thought 37 was rather old for such a discovery - heh. I'd leave out the age, and put in the 1979 date instead, solving the indirect sourcing issue. This particular math novelty, as a weird math flora and fauna, with its interesting organic-looking graphical representations, seems worthy, in spite of the blizzard of equations. General audiences have attended some college: most had some sort of math requirement, and can take or leave the maths without being traumatized. And I disagree with the "degree required" - I'm not a maths guru, just an avid reader, and puzzled it out to the extent of getting the terminology right for the DYK tag, and comprehending the concepts presented. It's pretty simple, when the jargon is set aside in a Feynman-ish way. Without the age mentioned, it's rather well cited - is that disputed? --Lexein (talk) 06:21, 21 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'd consider it does, without synth, yes - because of two parts, which say;
In 1850, Crosiers were sent to minister to the Belgian Catholics in and around Bay Settlement, Wis., near Green Bay. (Crosiers being the person in charge of the entire settlement), and later Daems was named the first Vicar General of the Diocese of Green Bay and One of his great accomplishments was the founding of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Cross, [...] by 1868, the four founding Sisters had taken up teaching and healthcare among immigrant families in northeast Wisconsin.

  • The inline citations appearing to support this claim go to citations #1 and #2. #1 (Hunt) is offline, though it can be accepted in good faith. In #2 (Leigh) I can find no information about this record-setting trip. Additionally, I'm a little concerned about using an 11-year-old source (#1; Hunt) to claim that a record is still unbroken. Thanks for the comments. Hunt's book is available on Google books here. I accept that it's 11 years old but bear in mind that it would be difficult to sail from Calcutta to Macao now as you would have to pass through several sensitive areas controlled by the PRC navy. It was 1451 characters (223 words) "readable prose size" on Jan 23, 2010 (the last edit prior to beginning of 15 Oct expansion) and currently it is 5704 characters (905 words). 7255 characters would need to be achieved for a proper 5x.   • It's been a very long while since I put anything up for a DYK nomination. For 5x expansion, I wasn't sure how list-type sections (list of works, exhibitions, publications) of the article count.   • Size is fine now. Date is also fine: expansion began on October 15 and the expansion was sufficient on or before the 20th. According to the Constitution of Uganda posted online here (see page 83 of 192) and here (see page 100 of 231), "There shall be a Cabinet which shall consist of the President, the Vice President and such number of Ministers as may appear to the President to be reasonably necessary for the efficient running of the State." The word "consist" there makes me think that both the Prez and the VP are indeed "members" of the Cabinet of Uganda.   • Excuse me for expressing concerns over an already reviewed article. The hook may be catchy, but it's in many ways inaccurate. First of all, to me "there" implies that a bear was spotted at the station, which is obviously untrue. Also, the station wasn't really named so because of the bear spotting: the area was named after the bear spotting, and in turn the station was named after the area.   • To take the first thing last: in Norwegian (which the source is in) it is not possible to distinguish between a bear and several bears (at least not the way the source is written). For the rest, how about " ... that Bjørnsletta Station of the Oslo Metro was named for a bear sighting in 1852?"   • Ah, the lack of a different plural form in Norwegian never occurred to me. "Bear sighting" is a clever getaway :) There's still the confusion that the station was directly named after the event rather than after the surrounding area though. I'm not really happy that the "making power generated using the cells cheaper than from coal" is referenced to the company president - of course he is going to say that! I'm pretty sure that solar cells are currently far above 40% more expensive than coal. Maybe I'm overly strict, but the whole article is rather advert like at present IMO. I wasn't suggesting that you are linked to the company, just that we need to be careful be repeat a company's claims without checking them to see if they are realistic. Are there any more independent sources that have comments from people unrelated to the company, but knowledgable in the field? I'm just always a bit suspicious when there is a sudden flurry of news articles, as they are almost certainly based on press releases from the company, and the journalists might not have done much research themselves.   • It doesn't appear, Le Deluge, that you know who Halston was. He was internationally famous (he designed Jacqueline Kennedy's iconic pillbox hat outfit, which had worldwide recognition), and was well-known throughout Europe and portions of Asia. His recognizability is perhaps more time-bound (who knows who he is today?), but the quote was from 1979 (when he was still a worldwide icon of high couture and not a budget-conscious caricature as he was at the end). Accusing someone of ethnocentrism is, I don't think, an appropriate response to the proposed hook (especially if you don't know that person, or their contributions). If you are concerned that hooks are not worldwide in nature, I can only respond that 1) That is not a DYK criteria and 2) 17 of the accepted 22 hooks for this year do not involve worldwide topics. I am disturbed by the possibility of using the Main Page (whether TFA, ITN, OTD, or DYK) to spotlight a specific candidate in an election on the day of, or immediately before the election. I think this problem arises even if the day is chosen coincidentally, but is all the more obvious with a "hold". Because the DYK process only vets articles for compliance with Wikipedia policies like neutrality at the most basic level, this presents an opportunity for partisans to use Wikipedia as a political ad. The easiest way to prevent this (and the only feasible way given the realities of Wikipedia), is just to not run such hooks right before an election. Even if the article is neutral, well-referenced, etc., the prominence of the main page seems to provide an undue level of spotlighting, almost like an endorsement or lopsided voters guide. As for this specific hook, I recommend that it be run well in advance of, or after the election. For example, for the 2008 presidential election, both Obama and McCain were run as TFA; I strongly doubt that we would have run either article alone, even if only one of the articles was featured. This nomination is a bit of a special case. I originally nominated Seal of the Federal Bureau of Investigation on August 3 following a 5x expansion (see discussion above under #Articles created/expanded on August 3). Everyone accepted that it met the DYK criteria but the nomination was derailed by a political dispute over timing. I've put forward a compromise at User talk:Jimbo Wales#Compromise proposal, which involves passing this DYK now but scheduling its appearance on January 1, 2011, which is 60 years to the day since the seal was first used. This proposal has been generally welcomed so I'm putting it forward here for formal consideration. I'm aware that the timeframe is somewhat longer than would be usual for scheduled DYKs, but in the circumstances I think a some flexibility would be justified.   • - Tentative Even if the motivation behind qualifying this article for DYK was questionable, I think you already achieved not just a satisfactory compromise, but a completely valid and justifiable use for it. If we're going to censor it, we need to go whole hog or don't go at all.

Espresso's suggestion may be useful for more than just making this page leaner. A delay in nomination would lend to better perspective for those establishing consensus. In other words, removing it from discussion for a couple months would also put some time between recent events and the article (and hopefully image) being contemplated for a main page feature (unless such a delay would disqualify it from use in DYK section).

Comment This hook should not "disappear" for a few months. It is far better to leave it here to enable a wide input from editors on the issue. I do not support 1 January 2011. The DYK section is for new articles. There are exceptions like April Fools and Halloween; I do not see the point of making every day of the year a possible exception. Geschichte (talk) 20:28, 6 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose Anniversary or not, a four-month wait at DYK is an overkill. The point of DYK is to present new or newly expanded articles, not to present "on this day". By then this article will be more than four months old. If this line of though is going to be followed, DYK is going to end up in a mess.   • per IAR. I would count this as a valid use of IAR. This could have gone up for today. The only reason it isn't going up is for political reasons.
