Template:Infobox Indian jurisdiction Rajampet or Rajampeta is a town located in Kadapa District of Andhra Pradesh State in India. It was recently upgraded to a municipality.

History

A town whose history is traceable to 600 AD with traces of Buddhism with the excavations that have taken place in Tallapaka, Nandalur and Konduru Thippa was later under the rule of Kakatiyas, cholas and finally under the rule of Matli Rajas.

A chola king called "Karikalavan" has de-forested and established a township with Pothapi as the capital. This area came to be known as "Karipa" and later Cuddapah after the king Karikalavan (See the Andhrula Charitra - published by Visalandhra Publishing House). This District was uniquely spelt by the British (Another like spelt District is Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu).

The chain of towns and villages named after woman with a surfix pet(habitation) is the peculiar phenomenon that is found here. e.g., Rajamma, Pullamma, Achamma, Yellamma are some among them. Another peculiarity in the names are agraharams with surfix Puram(again habitation) e.g.,Gopamamba Puram, Kitchamamba Puram, Kumpini(Company i.e., East India Company) Puram., Madana Gopala Puram, and Seshamamba Puram are some to quote. Villages with a surfix of Kandrikas and Podus are common around Kodur.

Geography

Rajampeta is located at 14°11′00″N 79°10′00″E / 14.1833°N 79.1666°E / 14.1833; 79.1666. It has an average elevation of 456 meters.

Rajampet is one among the two revenue Divisions in Kadapa.

Economy

Rajampet is well known for orchards. Mango, Lemon, Banana, Papaya are the main orchards here. Commercial crops like Groundnut, gingilee, sunflower and turmeric are notable crops.

Connection with the Gulf countries

Rajampet is well known for its relation with the Gulf countries viz., Kuwait, Dubai, Oman, Quattar and Saudi Arabia, lot of people from here are working in Kuwait and other countries of the Persian Gulf. Around 10% people usually go to Kuwait to earn money. Some of the migrants are well settled in Government posts and conducting their own businesses. They frequently send their savings home and such sums have largely contributed to the development of this town and surrounding villages.

Industry

Rajampet and its suburbs are known for Industries like Narayanadri Steels (which is located by Venkatarajampet village), and Thippayapalle, Manisreni Ferro Alloys, Anantharajupet. Pullampet, Puttanavaripalle, Boyanapalle, Madhavaram and Kondamachupalle are the villages around Rajampet where the activity of weaving is the main source of living and the hand loom sarees that are made here are marketed with the brand name "Venkatagiri Sarees"[citation needed]

Mines and geology

Rajampet is famous for its china clay, which is consigned to various ceramic factories like Johnson and Johnson, Parry India Limited, Regency Ceramics etc., Barytes of Mangampet are known for its quality. Iron Ore deposits are being surveyed in Annasamudram, Mantapampalle etc., The Union Minister of State for Steel is putting his efforts to start mining activity as well as an Industry form the Ministry in this Rajampet Parliamentary Constituency.[citation needed]

Law and government

Rajampet is one of the biggest towns in Kadapa District, Andhra Pradesh, India. The Rajampet Parliamentary Constituency extends from Nellore in the East to Kolar(Karnataka) in the West. It is the headquarters of 1. Rajampet Parliament Constituency(MP) 2. Legislative Assembly Constituency (MLA) and 3. Revenue Division with a Sub-Collectorate.

Tourism

Famous temples

Within the radius of 15 km, so many historical places exists. Some of them were built in the 13th century.It has a 600-year background. Mannur, Talapaka and Pottapi villages are old and pilgrim places.

  • Nandalur is about 11 km away. The prime attraction of Nandalur is the temple of Soumyanatha Swami. Soumyanatha Swami is another name and form of Lord Venkateshwara.

. There is a temple of the Moon (Soumyanatha) located in a sprawling compound of 14 acres (57,000 m2) in Nandalur 10 km from Rajampet which is worth seeing. Just one KM away from the above temple Budhist Caves are situated and are locally known as "Sudda Gavi Boudha Aramam".

  • Hatyarala known as Attirala with a rare Pagoda of Parasurama Temple,Temples of Lord Shiva Known as Thretheswara and Lord Vishnu in the name of Gadadhara on a hillock and the lake that never dries up located on the banks of the river Bahuda or Cheyyar. A Story in vogue tells that Parasuram had taken bath in this lake to get rid of sin, vishu 3rd padam.
  • Kanyakaparameswari Temple, which is located in middle of town. this is religion temple for arya visya. having more than 100 years history for this temple.
  • Kanyaka Parameswari Chariot shaped Temple. Dusserah is the festival which is celebrated with lot of poise and pomp. The Vijayadasami is the day when the deity is taken out on procession and the event is celebrated with burning of large variety of crackers.
  • Bhuvana giri Narasimha Swamy' Temple, which is constructed 100 years ago again on a hillock. Hundreds of marriages take place on this hillock and at times even a dozen marriages for the same Muhurtham are solemnised here.
  • Marammatalli temple is located in the mid-town road junction and another which is located in Naiduvari palli was constructed almost 70 years ago. This temple is said to have been built in one day.
  • Tallapaka, the place of birth of the Saint Poet Annamacharya is located here. There is a Sudarsana Chakra or the Chakrattalwar temple, the temple of Chennakesava and Sidheswara are also located there. The famous saint poet Annamacharya, who wrote 32,000 Kirtans (Praising Lord Venkateswara), was born in Tallapaka, a village just 4 km from Rajampet. A 108 ft (33 m). tall Annamayya Statue has been installed facing the Main Road.

  • A rare Panchamukheswara swamy Temple at Madana Gopala Puram (Esukapalle) is a piece of an art that is preserved which shows the five faces of Lord Shiva viz., Sadyojatham, Vamadevam, Tatpurusham, Aghoram and Easanam.
  • Vontimitta another important temple town 27 km from Rajampet believed to be the place of birth of poet Bammera Pothana the scribe of Bhagavatham and also of Rama Raja Bhushanudu one of the eight renowned poets of Sri Krishna Deva Raya's Bhuvana Vijaayam (Ashta Diggajas) is adored with rich sculpture.
  • Chitvel is another historical place located 27 km on the Rajampet-Nellore Route, where the temple of Varada Raja Swamy is located and the Temple of Lord Venkateswara in Kamba Samudram Agraharam 2 km away from Chitvel.
  • Annamayya Irrigation Project is the Project located in Akepadu area 18 km from Rajampet is a Foreshore Project with 2 Tmc. storage capacity. Panoramic picturusque is the speciality of this spot.
  • Yellampet Boating facility up to Somasila in Nellore District.
  • Temple of Gangamma and she is the goddess for water . It is located about 1 km from Rajampet.They have a festival every year by name GANGA JATARA in Balijapalli.Goddess Gangamma is a powerful goddess to the Balija community of Balijapalli Village There is also another temple for God 'PothulaRaju', which is just beside to this temple
  • Kanakadramma temple Temple which is located at Pooluri Veganna Gari Palli(PVG Palli) village which is 12 K.M away from Rajampet. around 20 villages people participated for TIRUNNALLU in April month for every year. this temple constructed 60 years ago We can know God is real when we experience His reality. In other words, God's existence and nature is revealed through what you can see around you in the physical universe AND in your own internal world. Your conscience, mind, memory, will - indeed your whole soul - is a strong evidence that there is a Personal God - one who feels, thinks, chooses and judges.

Matts and Ashrams

  • Sankar Mutt:

There is a Mutt of Jagadguru Sri Sri Sri Adi Sankaracharya in the Mid town of Rajamept. Annual Sankar Jayanti is celebrated here where the Mutt performs free Upanayanams for the Brahmin Boys, who in the evening take out a procession of The Guru Sankaracharya in the main streets of the town. More activities are foreseen in future here.

  • Anubhava Mantapam:

Shivate Guru Basaveswara propagated Veera Saivam which preaches the theme "work is worship" cutting across the bariers of caste and community. There is a Mutt for this Basaveswara called "Kudala Sangama Devara Basaveswara Matham" in the Gaddi Street, Rajampet.

  • Chinmayaranyam:

20 km away from Rajampet, there is an Ashram run by the Chinmaya Mission. This Ashram teaches and preaches the Advaita Vedanta Philosophy of Jagadguru Sankara Acharya. All busses bound to Tirupati will go up to Korla Kunta from where autorickshaws and other vehicular conveyance is available to the Ashram.
