"The Sixties" is an hour-long radio program airing on CKCU-FM 93.1 in Ottawa, Canada devoted to the music of the 1960s. Premiering in July of 1984 - The Sixties was originally hosted by Steve Schijns. At the time, Ottawa had no Oldies radio stations, and Schijns helped fill a much needed void, not only playing sixties hits-but digging deep into rare pop, garage and psychedelic music. Moving from Tuesday nights at 11pm back to 10pm in its first year, the show expanded its audience-however-Schijns departed from the program in October of 1985. "The Sixties" was then passed on to 3 hosts - Roch Parisien, Ian McLeish & Chris Lyne. Parisien offered more progressive, garage & psychedelic direction, while McLeish covered folk rock, pop, and also some of the progressive rock themes & Lyne covered British and other world regions. Chris Lyne departed the program in mid 1986, and he was replaced by Dave Sampson in September of that year. McLeish departed in the fall of 1988 and Parisien in 1991 - with Dave Sampson taking over as full time host to the present (although both Roch & Ian still take an active roll in the show.)
The program moved in 2004 from Tuesdays at 10pm to Sunday nights at 8pm.
Some of the themes and bands that have been covered on "The Sixties" include: The Monterey Pop Festival, The New Colony Six, The Shadows Of Knight, The Creation, The Action, The Aerovons, International Artists Records, The Monkees, Family, The Grateful Dead, The Dave Clark Five, We The People, The Hassles, The Turtles, Kaleidoscope-UK, The Cryan Shames, The Paupers, Sir John A Records, P.F.
