====Floriana vs Sliema Wanderers====
{{fc|Floriana}} and {{fc|Sliema Wanderers}} are the two most successful football teams on the Maltese Islands. Floriana have won 25 [[Maltese Football League]] championships and Sliema have won 26. Their rivalry stems from a game in 1910, the first in the then newly-formed League. The match was abandoned after a disputed goal and replayed several weeks later; Floriana won the replay and went on to win the League. The rivalry is known as the Old Firm after the rivalry between {{fc|Celtic}} and {{fc|Rangers}} in [[Scotland]]. It was particularly intense between 1920 and 1940 because the clubs frequently confronted each other in decisive matches.<ref>{{cite book|url=http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=CJxIbXQfE1IC&pg=PA144&dq=floriana+history&hl=en&ei=3FD2Tc41hIeFB4yXnNMG&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CDUQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&q=floriana%20sliema&f=false|last1=Armstrong|first1=Gary|last2=Giulianotti|first2=Richard|title=Fear and loathing in world football|year=2001|publisher=[[Berg Publishers]]|pages=144–149|isbn=1859734634}}</ref>

[[Floriana]] is a suburb of Malta's capital city of [[Valletta]] and generally Floriana fans are taunted about being the "carpet" to the capital city (Valletta). However, the Floriana supporters ('ta' l-Irish') always taunt Valletta about the fact that a few years back, Valletta was full of British and Allied Military frequenting the city. Both clubs hold a lion as their mascot since there is a statue of a lion looking at Valletta in Floriana.<ref>{{cite book|url=http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=CJxIbXQfE1IC&pg=PA144&dq=floriana+history&hl=en&ei=3FD2Tc41hIeFB4yXnNMG&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CDUQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&q=floriana%20valletta&f=false|last1=Armstrong|first1=Gary|last2=Giulianotti|first2=Richard|title=Fear and loathing in world football|year=2001|publisher=[[Berg Publishers]]|pages=149–151|isbn=1859734634}}</ref>

*Derby of the South [[Hibernians F.C.]] vs [[Tarxien Rainbows F.C.]]
This is the newest Premiership derby on the Maltese Islands. Hibernians FC are by far the most successful but Tarxien are building a strong squad for the future. In the nineties they met 4 times, all resulting in a Hibernians victory. During the 2000s Hibernians won 2-0 and 7-2 in 2008–09 and 2-1 in 2009–10 and Tarxien won 1-0, 2-0 and once again 1-0 in their memorable 2009–10 season, their irst which they finished above their rivals.

Australia

Adelaide United vs Melbourne Victory

Sydney FC vs Melbourne Victory

The rivalry involves Australia's Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory FC and is also called The City Derby. The rivalry came about after the inception of the A-League. Melbourne and Sydney were the two largest cities in Australia. It carries on a longstanding rivalry between the two cities, who compete both in sport and in politics.

The Melbourne Derby

The Melbourne Derby is currently the only intra-city local derby in Australia's premier Association football competition, the A-League, between the two Melbourne teams in the competition, Melbourne Heart and Melbourne Victory. It is the A-League's first intra-city derby, and although only one season old, is said[9] to be climbing to be the league's biggest rivalry. Already in just five games there have been two red cards, thirty-one yellows and sixteen goals.

Melbourne Victory is the most successful football club within the Hyundai A-League, the most financially secure, and the most supported football club in Australia, holding most records for crowd numbers within the 7 year history of the A-League. Although in it's infant stage, the rivalry is fierce due to the lack of respect given to Melbourne Heart from the Victory fans, and the lack of understanding for supporting a new club - where any real Australian football supporters followed Melbourne Victory from it's initiation, as the first football club to represent the entire Victorian demographic, free from racial discrimination - and the fact that both clubs are from the Victorian capital, Melbourne

The biggest, and most notable incident of violence between two sets of supporters was in February 2011, where four Melbourne Heart supporters were charged with " conspiracy to falsely imprison a [Victory supporter] " after an ultras-style supporter group within Victory's North Terrace, known as Horda was pictured in possession of a banner of a Heart supporter group called Yarraside. Sarajevo vs Željezničar

The Sarajevo derby is a match between big city rivals FK Željezničar Sarajevo and FK Sarajevo, two of the biggest and most popular clubs in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is generally considered as one of few with the best atmosphere in the region. Fans usually make great decore with a lot of big flags, paper rolls, scarfs and loud chanting. This derby is also similar to the Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool; it is not uncommon to see members of the same family that are on opposite sides. They don't speak to each other that day. But when the game ends, provocations are something of a tradition, strangest bets need to be fulfilled, and everybody is waiting for the next one. Although, incidents between younger fans can be seen in recent years.

The history of Sarajevo derby dates back to 1954, but the rivalry began eight years earlier. In 1946 FK Sarajevo was formed by the local authorities. On the other side, FK Željezničar Sarajevo is a club formed in 1921 by a group of railway workers. They won the second-tier Bosnian championship title in 1946, as a part of first post-war Yugoslav league system. Since the idea was to create a new club who would represent the city and the republic on national level, newly formed FK Torpedo (as FK Sarajevo was called at the time) needed the best players from the city, so several FK Željezničar players were transferred to the new club on authorities' decision. These players received good salaries and new suits. Ever since, the rivalry was present between these two clubs. At first, Sarajevo supporters were considered to be upper-class individuals with ties to the ruling communist authorities. On the other side, supporters of FK Željezničar were usually working-class with liberal image. Those identifications were true in 1950s and 1960s, but these differences were later erased. Both clubs have supporters from all classes and (it is very important to say when we talk about Bosnia) from all ethnic groups, even if FK Sarajevo fan base is predominately Bosniak. FK Željezničar still have the image of liberal club and they are popular even among other supporters in the region. Since they played in different levels, first matches between FK Željezničar and FK Sarajevo were friendlies. The first official league match was held in 1954; FK Sarajevo won 6-1. That is still the biggest victory by any team in these matches. So far (as of October 24, 2010), 96 league matches were played. Both clubs won 29 times, while 38 matches ended with a draw. Goal difference is 117-114 in FK Sarajevo's favour. Since the independence, as a part of Bosnian championship, 33 games were played; Sarajevo won 10 times, Željezničar won 8 times, with 15 draws, and goal difference 39-34 for FK Sarajevo.

Probably the best known thing about the Sarajevo derby are the fans. Usually, they are much more exciting to watch than the game itself. Especially in recent times, since the Bosnian championship has at times lacked in quality. Fans create an impressive atmosphere with loud cheering and original choreography. Both sides prepare intensely between the matches, make large flags and special messages that are appropriate for that particular occasion, to be usually directed towards the opposing side. FK Željezničar's most passionate fans (wearing blue) are called The Maniacs because their love for the club is on the edge of insanity, so it is said. They are located on the South side of stadium (the Holy South as they call it). The older fans ones are known affectionately as the Košpicari (which can metaphorically be translated as "seed eaters", although the name itself has different meaning - namely that of "seed sellers"). FK Sarajevo's most passionate fans (crimson) are called the Horde Zla (Evil hordes) after the popular Zagor comic book. In home games on Koševo Stadium, they are located on the North stands, while the older fans are known as the Pitari (similar to the Košpicari etymology except referring to pie and not seeds) and they are mainly on the East side. When the derby is played on Grbavica, Horde zla are on the East and NE side of the stadium, The Maniacs are on the South and West side, while the Pitari and Košpicari are on the North. When the games is played on Koševo, The Maniacs are on the South and SW side, Horde zla on the North and the East. Pitari are on the East as well. West stands are mixed with both Pitari and Košpicari sitting there.

Zrinjski vs Velež

The Mostar derby is a football rivalry in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina between HŠK Zrinjski and FK Velež. The Mostar derby is special because of its political and national tensions. Mostar was in war in the near past, and in that war Zrinjski (West Mostar, Croatian part of the city) and Velež (East Mostar, Bosniak part of the city) were on different sides. The wounds of the war are still fresh which might be the reason why this derby is always accompanied by riots and violence.[15]

Bulgaria

CSKA Sofia vs Levski Sofia

This match is known as the so-called "Eternal derby" in Bulgaria. There is fierce hatred between the fans of the clubs and there are often fights. The hostility reached its climax on 19 June 1985 during the Bulgarian Cup final held at Vasil Levski National Stadium when after many disputable referee decisions both teams demonstrated poor sportsmanship which resulted in regular fights between them on the pitch. On 21 June the Central Committee of the Bulgarian Communist Party issued a decree that disbanded both teams. Then called CSKA Septemvriysko zname had to be re-founded as Sredets and then called Levski-Spartak - as Vitosha. Six players (including Hristo Stoichkov and Borislav Mikhailov) were banned for life from playing competitive football, many other players and staff members - for periods from 3 months to 1 year. A year later the decision was abolished and the players continued their sport careers.[16] On occasions up to 1500 police officers have been required to prevent trouble from occurring.[17]

Levski's best results are 7–1, 7–2 and 5–0. CSKA's best results are two wins with 5–0 and one with 6–2 in a friendly game.[when?]

Lokomotiv Plovdiv vs Botev Plovdiv

This, the second biggest rivalry in Bulgaria, pits teams from the second biggest city in Bulgaria, Plovdiv, against each other. Botev Plovdiv have had more success historically, but now their rivals Lokomotiv can gloat that their rivals are in the lower leagues. Nonetheless this rivalry is still hot and with Botev's rise in form, there will be no lack of pressure when these teams line up in the future.

Croatia

Dinamo Zagreb vs Hajduk Split

The Eternal Derby (Vječni Derbi) is between Croatian clubs Dinamo Zagreb and Hajduk Split. Both teams are amongst the strongest in the country and have strong support groups, which are the Bad Blue Boys for Dinamo and Torcida for Hajduk.[18]

Hajduk is from Dalmatia (Split) and Dinamo is from the Zagreb region.

In 2004, a friendly match between the teams was abandoned after fans threw objects including bottles and knives onto the pitch. The situation became intolerable after a Dinamo player Edin Mujčin was sent off and tensions in the stands grew. Police said that before the match, 25 fans had been arrested.[19]

Arsenal vs Tottenham Hotspur

Arsenal and Tottenham are neighbouring north London clubs, situated less than four miles from each other, hence the footballing rivalry. The rivalry dates back to 1919, when Arsenal were awarded promotion ahead of Tottenham, despite Tottenham finishing above them.[21] Arsenal have won many more League titles (13 to Spurs' 2), and have won ten FA Cups to Tottenham's eight, many of these in recent years. However, Spurs have won more European trophies and League Cups; Arsenal more Community Shields. An example in recent years that highlights the rivalry is the move of Sol Campbell from Tottenham to Arsenal. At the time Campbell was considered one of the best defenders in the country and was in demand from teams such as Barcelona and Inter Milan. Campbell's decision to join close rivals Arsenal came as a shock to fans.[22] The move even prompted death threats from fans upset that he chose Arsenal.[23] William Gallas has also made the switch, but from Arsenal to Tottenham Hotspur at the beginning of the 2010–2011 season.[24]

Aston Villa vs Birmingham City

The Second City derby is arguably one of the fiercest rivalries in England. With the clubs situated less than 4 miles apart fan rivalry is clear within the city. The most recent notable game was in December 2010 during a Carling Cup quarter final between the two clubs held at St Andrews ( Birmingham City's stadium) where Birmingham celebrated a 2-1 win by invading the pitch. This incited violence and flare throwing. The Aston Villa fans ripped up seats up to use as missiles, throwing them towards the Birmingham City fans. This had to go down as one of the hottest rivalries of England Football.

Everton vs Liverpool

Liverpool FC was formed when Everton, the original team in the city, moved from Anfield to Goodison Park over a rent dispute. Everton's previous landlord founded Liverpool as his own team to play in the then empty Anfield stadium. The derby is often known as the 'friendly' derby, with families in the city containing supporters of each club;[25] it is one of the few local derbies where fan segregation is not enforced. Liverpool are the more successful of the clubs, winning eighteen league titles and five European Cups and other European trophies, while Everton have won the 1985 European Cup-Winners' Cup and 9 league titles.[26] The relationship became somewhat less friendly and more heated after the Heysel tragedy which resulted in the death of 39 Juventus fans during the 1985 European Cup Final: because of this, UEFA enforced a five-year ban on all English clubs from European competition (Liverpool were initially banned for a further three years after other English clubs would be allowed back in, but in the event were only banned for one extra year). The ban on all English clubs denied Everton the chance to compete in the European Cup the following season. Everton won the League championship again in 1987, but were again denied entry to the European Cup the following season. The team quickly broke up as the best players moved abroad for European football, and the team has not won a league title since.

Ipswich Town vs Norwich City

Liverpool vs Manchester United

Liverpool and Manchester United are England's two most successful teams, and are both based in the northwest of England. The league matches between the two are considered by some critics to be the biggest games of the season.[27] Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard also believes this to be true.[28]

Manchester City vs Manchester United

The Manchester derby has become more and more fiercely contested since Manchester City's rise from the ashes following their purchase by Sheikh Mansour in 2008. In 2010-11 over 10 million viewers tuned in to watch the FA Cup semi final between the two clubs at Wembley, which ended in a 1-0 victory to City, who ultimately went on to lift the trophy. Estimates have been made that this fixture was the most expensive domestic game to police in footballing history, as the sheer intensity these games now produce has led to an increase in clashes between the two sets of fans in recent years.

The most recent meeting between the two sides was in the FA Cup third round, at the Etihad Stadium, United winning 3-2. Prior to that City had won in a 6-1 rout at Old Trafford. The next meeting, at the Etihad Stadium in April could have a descisive effect on the Premier League as both clubs are currently front runners to lift the trophy.

Ferencváros vs Honvéd

The rivalry between Budapest Honvéd FC and Ferencvárosi TC dates back to the 1950s when Honvéd won five Hungarian League titles with playes like Ferenc Puskás and József Bozsik. The rival revived in the 1980s when Honvéd ruled again the Hungarian championsships with players like Lajos Détári.

Bohemians vs Shamrock Rovers

Following the demise of Drumcondra in the 1960s, Bohemian Football Club adopted professionalism. Since then, a rivalry has developed between Bohemians and Shamrock Rovers.[34]

While there have been many examples over the years of the notability of the fixture and the rivalry to the supporters of each club, one of the more recent incidents of note is the signing of Tony Grant and James Keddy by Bohs from Rovers, which led to a pig's head being thrown onto the pitch during their first game versus their old club, a gesture aimed at Grant in particular.[35] Matches involving both teams have occasionally been accompanied by instances of hooliganism. Recent incidents have included the vandalism of the monument commemorating the former home of Shamrock Rovers, Glenmalure Park,[36] and two instances of crowd trouble at Dalymount Park in 2000[37] and Richmond Park in 2003,[38] with the latter resulting in the eviction of Rovers from the Inchicore venue.[39]

Attendance at the fixture has generally followed the same sliding trend as the rest of the League's fixtures over the last forty years,[40] though attendances have risen since Rovers' move to Tallaght.[41][42]

The Louth Derby is reguarded as one of the biggets fixtures in the league for these two clubs from County Louth in the north-east of the Ireland. The tie has become much more intense since Dundalks promotion to the Premier Division in 2008.

Galway United vs Sligo Rovers

The Connacht derby was traditionally a First Division derby but in recent years the success of both clubs means it is now a regular Premier Division encounter. Both teams regularly beat each other, resulting in an almost exact record for both, however in recent seasons Sligo have come out on top most times. The derby is possibly one of the friendliest in the world, with both clubs maintaining good relations with each other and violence at matches non-existent.

Shamrock Rovers vs Sligo Rovers

This rivalry is one that has transcended the usual distance related rivalries within Irish soccer, and has spanned way back to to 1978 FAI Cup Final when referee John Carpenter awarded a controversial penalty to Shamrock Rovers in order for them to win their 21st FAI Cup. This rivalry has been stoked in recent years, no doubt due to the 2010 FAI Cup Final which saw Sligo Rovers beat the Hoops in a penalty shootout, and the rise of both sides in the 2011 Airtricity League season.

Internazionale vs Juventus

The Derby d'Italia is a football fixture in Italian football between Internazionale and Juventus. It is unique in Italian football because, until the 2006–07 season, the derby was the only match which had always been played in Serie A. In the 2006–07 Serie A season, for the first time, this derby was not played as Juventus had been relegated to Serie B due to the Calciopoli scandal. The Derby d'Italia (Italian for "Derby of Italy") was coined back in 1967 by the Italian sports journalist Gianni Brera as the bi-annual football fixture in Italian football between Inter and Juventus.[43]

Once Juventus returned to Serie A, the fixture resumed and the first one held was a fiercely contested draw (the first draw in the fixture since 2001).[44] The two teams also have the highest goals total in Serie A history.

Internazionale vs Milan

Derby della Madonnina, or the Milan Derby as it is sometimes known, is a football match between the Italian clubs A.C. Milan and F.C. Internazionale Milano (Inter).[45] It is usually a semiannual fixture in the Italian football league Serie A; however, the derby has also taken place in the Coppa Italia and the UEFA Champions League. It is called "Derby della Madonnina" in honour of one of the main sights of the city of Milan, the statue of the virgin Mary on the top of the Duomo, which is usually called "Madonnina".[46]

The most infamous of the derby matches between Milan and Inter was the second leg of the Champions' League quarterfinal on 12 April 2005. The game was abandoned after Milan goal keeper Dida was hit by a flare.[47]

Floriana vs Sliema Wanderers

Floriana and Sliema Wanderers are the two most successful football teams on the Maltese Islands. Floriana have won 25 Maltese Football League championships and Sliema have won 26. Their rivalry stems from a game in 1910, the first in the then newly-formed League. The match was abandoned after a disputed goal and replayed several weeks later; Floriana won the replay and went on to win the League. The rivalry is known as the Old Firm after the rivalry between Celtic and Rangers in Scotland. It was particularly intense between 1920 and 1940 because the clubs frequently confronted each other in decisive matches.[48]

Other

Floriana is a suburb of Malta's capital city of Valletta and generally Floriana fans are taunted about being the "carpet" to the capital city (Valletta). However, the Floriana supporters ('ta' l-Irish') always taunt Valletta about the fact that a few years back, Valletta was full of British and Allied Military frequenting the city. Both clubs hold a lion as their mascot since there is a statue of a lion looking at Valletta in Floriana.[49]

This is the newest Premiership derby on the Maltese Islands. Hibernians FC are by far the most successful but Tarxien are building a strong squad for the future. The 1st derby was played in the 1986–87 and resulted in a 1-0 victory for Hibernians, though the next meeting Tarxien caused an upset by winning 1-0.

Despite that geographically Gozo is much smaller than Malta, Gozo is home to the only village (city) derby that takes place on the Maltese Islands. While in Malta there are no villages home to two or more clubs, Victoria, the capital city of Gozo, is home to three clubs, being, Victoria Hotspurs, SK Victoria Wanderers and Oratory Youths. While the latter are considered to be the smallest of the three, matches between the former two are always a heated affair and undoubtedly is the most fiery derby in the Gozitan football league, with the second heated rivalry being the one between Ghajnsielem FC and Nadur Youngsters FC.

Ajax vs Feyenoord

A rivalry in the Netherlands is that between AFC Ajax and Feyenoord, known as De Klassieker (The Classic). Both clubs have won the Dutch national championship numerous times and, along with PSV, have dominated the Dutch league since the beginning of professional football in Holland in the 1950s. Ajax has been the more successful of the two, and is renowned for its technical style of play, while Feyenoord has the blue collar appeal closely associated with Rotterdam as a port city.[50]

On occasions the rivalry has turned violent. In 1997, fans of the two teams clashed in a field, known as the Battle of Beverwijk. One fan was killed and many were injured. More recently, in 2004 during a pitch invasion Jorge Acuna was put into hospital after being attacked by a fan.[51]

Northern Ireland

Glentoran vs Linfield

This derby revolves around the rivalry between Belfast's 'Big Two' Glentoran and Linfield, the two most successful clubs in the history of Northern Irish football. Although both clubs are traditionally associated with the Unionist/Loyalist tendency of Northern Irish politics (and thus also have separate rivalries with the traditionally Nationalist/Republican Cliftonville) a fierce rivalry has built up between the two clubs due to their dominance of local football.

The clubs traditionally face each other on Boxing Day.[52][53] Games between the two sides have frequently been marred by outbreaks of hooliganism.[54][55] and even the appearance of animals at the 1985 Irish Cup final.[56] The 2008 Boxing Day game was marred by some particularly violent scenes, with the game temporarily halted due to missiles being thrown onto the pitch.[57] The incident led to the Irish Football Association suspending the traditional holiday fixture for two years in an attempt to control the violent rivalry.[58] The ban was lifted on appeal in March 2009, although the clubs face a potential fine of £40,000 if there is more crowd trouble.[59]

The dominance of the two clubs is demonstrated by the frequency with which they have faced each other in domestic cup finals. As of 2010 the teams have contested the final of the Irish Cup 14 times, the Irish League Cup eight times and the County Antrim Shield 17 times, while they have also faced each other in the finals of the defunct Gold Cup (12 times) and Irish League Floodlit Cup (once).

Celtic vs Rangers

The Old Firm derby is between Scottish Premier League teams Celtic and Rangers . Both clubs play in Glasgow, Scotland and the match is one of the oldest derbies in the world, dating back to 1888, the year of Celtic's creation.[61] The Old Firm derby is also one of the most contested matches in the world, with over 380 games having been played. The matches are played at either Ibrox Stadium with 51,000 fans or Celtic Park in front of 60,000. In some cases, the match is played at Hampden Park, if the tie happens to be a Scottish Cup or Scottish League Cup final or semi-final. Combined, the teams have won a total of 94 and a half league titles, with Rangers currently (as of 15 May 2011) ahead with 53 and a half [62] to Celtic's 42.

Rangers are considered a Protestant club with Unionist and loyalist supporters, while Celtic are considered a Catholic club with Republican and Nationalist supporters. The rivalry has long had connections with the conflict in Northern Ireland, with thousands of fans from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland making the trip to Scotland for these matches.[63] There is even violence in Northern Ireland following Old Firm games.[64] In 1980, around 9,000 fans fought an on-pitch battle in the aftermath of Celtic's 1–0 victory in the Scottish Cup Final at Hampden. This remains the worst invasion onto a football pitch ever reported. The Old Firm rivalry fuels many assaults and many deaths on Old Firm Derby days; an activist group that monitors sectarian activity in Glasgow has reported that on Old Firm weekends, admissions to hospital emergency rooms increase ninefold over normal levels, and journalist Franklin Foer noted that in the period from 1996 to 2003, eight deaths in Glasgow were directly linked to Old Firm matches, and hundreds and thousands of assaults.[65]

The highest aggregate score in the three major domestic competitions between the Old Firm clubs is eight goals, and this has happened on eight separate occasions: 4–4 twice (Scottish Cup on 16/2/1956, Premier League on 22/3/1986); Celtic 5-3 Rangers twice (Scottish Cup on 6/2/1892 and League on 22/9/1894); Celtic 6-2 Rangers three times (League on 14/12/1895, 10/9/1938, and 27/8/2000); Celtic 7-1 Rangers once (1957 Scottish League Cup Final on 19/10/1957). The latter result is the biggest margin of victory for either side in any official Old Firm match.

The record attendance for the Old Firm derby occurred in the 1969 Scottish Cup Final at Hampden Park, won 4–0 by Celtic, where there were 132,870 fans in attendence.

Hibernian vs Heart of Midlothian

The Edinburgh derby match between the two clubs is one of the oldest rivalries in world football. Graham Spiers has described it as "one of the jewels of the Scottish game". The clubs first met on Christmas Day in 1875, when Hearts won 1–0, in the first match ever contested by Hibs.

Both clubs have been champions of Scotland four times, although Hearts have won more cup competitions and have the better record in derbies, with 273 wins to 198 in 615 matches. Approximately half of all derbies have been played in local competitions and friendlies.

While it has been noted that religious background lies behind the rivalry, that aspect is "muted" and is a "pale reflection" of the sectarianism in Glasgow. Although the clubs are inescapable rivals, the rivalry is mainly "good-natured" and has had beneficial effects.

Crvena Zvezda vs Partizan

The Eternal derby (Večiti derbi) also known as Belgrade derby it replaced the pre-World War II rivalry between BSK and SK Jugoslavija.[66] FK Partizan was founded in 1945 as the football section of the central club of the Yugoslav Army.[67] Red Star was founded in 1945 as well but with close ties to the Ministry of Interior at its beginning. These two clubs were dominant in the post-1945 Yugoslav First League with Red Star winning 19 and Partizan 11 Yugoslav Championships. The matches of these two against Hajduk Split and Dinamo Zagreb, the third and fourth respectively in number of titles, was similar in intensity mostly because of the Serbo-Croat rivalry, and the four clubs were known as Velika četvorka (the big 4). After the break-up of SFR Yugoslavia in 1992 the rivalry between Partizan and Red Star continued, having until 2010 only once the national championship not been won by some of the two, with Partizan winning further 11 and Red Star 6 national championships. The rivalry between the two clubs is known to be fierce and violent.[68]

Red Star fans are named Delije (Heroes) and FK Partizan fans are named Grobari (Undertakers or Gravediggers). Because of violent actions between hooligans, many people have been hurt in fights. There are several cases of off-stadium deaths in clashes between supporters of these teams, as well as one case of an on-stadium killing, when in 1999 a Grobari member, using a hand-held rocket-launcher, killed a supporter of Red Star by sending a missile from the south stand to the north one, where Delije are traditionally stationed.[69]

Traditionally, especially during the Franco regime, Espanyol was seen by the majority of Barcelona's citizens as a club which cultivated a kind of compliance to the central authority, in stark contrast to Barça's revolutionary spirit.[70] Over the last years the derby is less political as Espanyol translated its official name and anthem from Spanish to Catalan.

Real Madrid vs Barcelona

The rivalry between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid is generally considered to be one of the biggest in football. From the start the clubs were seen as representatives of Catalonia and Spain respectively, as well as the cities of Barcelona and Madrid.[71]

In the 1950s, the rivalry was intensified further when the clubs disputed the signing of Alfredo Di Stéfano, who finally played for Real Madrid and was key in the subsequent success achieved by the club.ref>"Alfredo Di Stefano – Alfred the Great". Sports Asylum. Retrieved 19 November 2007.</ref>

Boca Juniors vs River Plate

These two teams from Buenos Aires, Argentina are the protagonists of what is known as the Superclásico (Superderby Spanish, clásico – meaning classic– is the word used instead of derby in Argentina). Boca Juniors is traditionally regarded as the club of Argentina's working class, in contrast with the supposedly more upper-class support base of cross-town Atlético River Plate.[76] The rivalry between Boca Juniors and River Plate is intense, and the team's fans usually take to distributing posters to tease the other after a defeat between them or even a loss in any major competition, or to show off after winning the local league or an international championship.

In 2004, British newspaper The Observer made a list of 50 sporting things you must do before you die, with Watch Boca Juniors Play River Plate in Buenos Aires at the top of the list.[77] Due to their huge fan bases (Boca has 40% of the Argentine population and River 33% (contrary to the popular claim that Boca is club of the half plus one (la mitad más uno)),[78] and remarkable success, the enmity encompasses a major part of the country's populace. Known worldwide for the passion of the fans, the stands of both teams are loaded with passionate songs (often based on popular Argentine rock band tunes) against their rivals, fireworks, flags and rolls of paper. Matches sometimes end in riots between the hardest supporters of both sides or against the police. Tourists from around the globe come to Argentina to watch the match, sometimes with travel packages that include a ticket to the Superclásico[79]

It was a match that would forever be remembered as The Derby of the Posts, due to the number of times that the Emelec forwards struck the woodwork. In 1948, the local derby received a name of its own in a preview in the newspaper El Universo, becoming known forever more as El Clásico del Astillero (The Shipyard Derby). In 1990 proved to be a very special year in the history of El Clásico del Astillero, with the two sides facing off in a Copa Libertadores quarter-final second leg on 29 August. A football rivalry existing since the late 19th century, the Uruguayan Clásico is the confrontation between the two greatest teams of Montevideo, Nacional and Peñarol.[96] Both teams have played a large part in developing South American football and are respected in the Americas and worldwide. Together they sum up 8 Copa Libertadores and 6 Intercontinental Cups.

The 0–0 draw of 14 April 1990, had after a protracted fight, 22 red cards, 11 for each side (Nacional-9 field players and 2 bench players). The match ended at 85 minutes because of the rule that each team needs a minimum of 7 players.[96] The 1–1 match of 26 November 2000 ended in another confrontation including punching and kicking after which 9 players had to spend a month in jail along with one of the coaches. Two editions of the match were played abroad, one in La Plata (Argentina) in 1960, the other in La Coruña (Spain) in 2005.

As of 14 October 2010, these teams faced each other 502 times, resulting in 180 victories for Peñarol and 162 for Nacional.[96]
