To constitute India 's 18th Lok Sabha , general elections were held in April–June 2024 . The result was announced on 4 and 5 June 2024[ 1] . The main contenders were two alliance groups of the Incumbent National Democratic Alliance and the Opposition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance ; led by Bharatiya Janata Party and Indian National Congress respectively.
This article describes the performance of various political parties. For the performance of individual candidates, please see, List of members of the 18th Lok Sabha .
Result
BJP led NDA broke the majority mark of 272 by winning 303 seats. However, unlike the previous election , BJP didn't achieve the majority mark on it's own. BJP maintained control of 240 seats in the Lower Chamber .
The INC led opposition alliance gained 235 seats out of which 99 were contributed by the Congress Party. 37 seats were won by SP while 29 seats from West Bengal were won by Mamata Banerjee headed Trinamool Congress . The final wins by the alliance were stronger than previous predictions from exit polls.
BJP lost 63 seats while its two main partners, TDP gained 13 seats and JD (U) lost 4. Within the opposition alliance, INC gained 47 seats, SP gained 32 seats, and AITC gained 7 seats vs the previous election.
Uttar Pradesh , West Bengal and Maharashtra had earlier indications of an overwhelming BJP and allies victory but ultimately were won by the opposition with SP winning in UP, AITC in Bengal and SS-UBT , INC and NCP-SP winning Maharashtra.
