Route 199 commenced on 27 April 1991 as a daytime service between Elephant & Castle and Lewisham Riverdale Centre. The route was operated by Selkent from Catford garage with Leyland Titans. On the 8 October 1994 the route was extended from Lewisham to Catford garage.
On 18 September 1999 the route was withdrawn between Elephant & Castle and Canada Water. On 1 January 2000, route 199 was converted to Low floor operation with Alexander ALX400 bodied Dennis Trident 2s.
In January 2012, route 199 was retained by Stagecoach London with new Alexander Dennis Enviro400s.
