The third generation iPad (announced as The new iPad, colloquially known as iPad 3)[4][5][6][7] is a tablet computer designed, developed and marketed by Apple Inc. It serves primarily as a platform for audio-visual media, including electronic books, periodicals, films, music, computer games, presentations, and web content.

There are eighteen different variations of the new iPad, including combinations of black or white glass panels, storage capacities of 16, 32, or 64 GB, and connectivity options of Wi-Fi only, Wi-Fi + 4G on Verizon, or Wi-Fi + 4G on AT&T, Telus, Rogers, or Bell.[1]

History

Tim Cook introducing the third generation iPad.

On February 28, 2012, Apple announced a media event scheduled for March 7, 2012, at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Apple did not disclose in advance what would be announced at the event, but it was widely expected to be a new version of the iPad.[8][9][10][11] The announcement of the iPad affected the tablet resale market,[12] and Apple's stock price reached a record closing figure on the same day that the Dow Jones Index reached a closing figure of above 13,000 for the first time since the Global Financial Crisis, though it is not a Dow Jones component.[13]

The keynote began at 10 AM PST (6 PM UTC) as Apple CEO Tim Cook introduced iOS 5.1, a Japanese version of Siri, and the third generation Apple TV before the third generation iPad.[14] At the media event, Cook talked about a 'post-PC world', a world where the personal computer is no longer the center of one's digital life, and of how the 3rd generation iPad will be one of the main contributors of the 'post-PC world'.[15]

Features

The Retina display has four times as many pixels as the iPad 2 and one million more pixels than a 1080p HDTV.[16] It also features the A5X processor and a 5 megapixel camera capable of 1080p video recording, a significant upgrade from the 0.7 megapixel camera in the iPad 2. As with previous iPads, there are two models, a Wi-Fi only model and a Wi-Fi + 4G LTE version for connecting via a cellular network when Wi-Fi is unavailable. Lastly, the new iPad has dictation, using the same technology as the iPhone 4S does. The user speaks, and the iPad types it on the screen provided the iPad is connected to a Wi-Fi or cellular network.[17] The new iPad uses iOS 5.1, which was released on March 7, 2012.[18]

From the App Store, GarageBand, iMovie, iPhoto, and the iWork apps Pages, Keynote, and Numbers are available for for purchase to use on the new iPad.[19] The third generation iPad can act as a hotspot, sharing its internet connection over WiFi, Bluetooth, or USB.[17] It can also access the App Store, a digital application distribution platform for iOS developed and maintained by Apple The service allows users to browse and download applications from the iTunes Store that were developed with Xcode and the iOS SDK and were published through Apple.

The Smart Cover, introduced with the iPad 2, is a screen protector that magnetically attaches to the face of the iPad. The cover has three folds which allow it to convert into a stand, which is also held together by magnets.[20] While original iPad owners could purchase a black case that included a similarly folding cover, the Smart Cover is meant to be more minimal, easily detachable, and protects only the screen. Smart Covers have a microfiber bottom that cleans the front of the iPad, and wakes up the iPad when the cover is removed. There are five different colors of both polyurethane and leather, with leather being more expensive than the polyurethane version.[21]

The new iPad comes with several applications by default, including Safari, Mail, Photos, Video, YouTube, iPod, iTunes, App Store, iBooks, Maps, Notes, Calendar, Game Center, Photo Booth, and Contacts.[22] Like all iOS devices, the new iPad can sync with a Mac or PC using iTunes, although iOS 5 and later can be completely PC-free. Although the new iPad is not designed to make phone calls over a cellular network, a user can use a wired headset or the built-in speaker and microphone and place phone calls over Wi-Fi or cellular using a VoIP application.[23]

Researchers demonstrated within hours of the product's release that the third generation iPad can be "jailbroken" to use applications and programs that are not authorized by Apple.[24] Four separate methods of jailbreaking the new iPad have been discovered, but none are yet stable enough to release to the public.[25][26] Although, Apple claims that jailbreaking will void the factory warranty on the device. [27][28]

Hardware

Apple's A5X chip

There are four physical switches on the third generation iPad, including a home button near the display that returns the user to the main menu, and three plastic physical switches on the sides: wake/sleep and volume up/down, plus a software-controlled switch whose function has changed with software updates. The display responds to other sensors: an ambient light sensor to adjust screen brightness and a 3-axis accelerometer to sense iPad orientation and switch between portrait and landscape modes. Unlike the iPhone and iPod Touch's built-in applications, which work in three orientations (portrait, landscape-left and landscape-right), the iPad's built-in applications support screen rotation in all four orientations, including upside-down.[29] Consequently, the device has no intrinsic "native" orientation; only the relative position of the home button changes.

Apple offers several more accessories for the third generation iPad,[30] most of which are adapters for the proprietary 30-pin dock connector, the iPad's only port besides the headphone jack.[31] A dock holds the iPad upright at an angle, and has a dock connector and audio line out port. The iPad can use Bluetooth keyboards that also work with Macs and PCs. The iPad can be charged by a standalone power adapter ("wall charger") also used for iPods and iPhones, and a 10 W charger is included with the iPad.[31]

Models of the new iPad are manufactured either with or without the capability to communicate over a cellular network; all models can connect to a wireless LAN. The third generation iPad is compatible with the Smart Cover that Apple introduced alongside the iPad 2. The third generation iPad has three capacity options for storage: 16, 32, or 64 GB of internal flash memory.

The iPad 2 resolution vs. the third generation iPad

All data is stored on the internal flash memory, with no option to expand storage. Apple sells a "camera connection kit" with an SD card reader, but it can only be used to transfer photos and videos.[31]

The new iPad has a lithium-ion polymer battery that lasts up to 10 hours; an Apple A5X SoC with dual-core CPU and quad-core graphics processor; a 5-megapixel, rear-facing camera capable of 1080p video recording; and a VGA front-facing videophone camera designed for FaceTime.[32]

The display resolution is 2048×1536 (QXGA) with 3.1 million pixels — four times more pixels than the iPad 2 — and is a resolution that eases transition from the original with even scaling.[33][34] However, the new iPad is slightly thicker than its older sibling by 0.6 mm and is heavier by 51 grams for the WiFi model (652 grams).[31][35] The 4G LTE models (both at 662 grams[31]) are 49 grams heavier for the AT&T model and 55 grams heavier for the Verizon model compared to the respective iPad 2 3G models (AT&T 3G iPad 2 is 613 grams, and Verizon 3G iPad 2 is 607 grams).[36]

A preliminary teardown of the third generation iPad by IHS iSuppli showed that the 16GB LTE iPad costs $358.30 to produce, the 32GB LTE iPad costs $375.10, and the 64GB LTE version costs $408.70 to produce.[37]

Reception

Critical reception

The third generation iPad has received a number of positive reviews. Many praised its Retina display and LTE capabilities.[54][55][56] According to Walt Mossberg of All Things Digital, with the introduction of the 3rd generation model, the iPad now "has the most spectacular display...seen in a mobile device" and holds the crown as "the best tablet on the planet." [57] Jonathan Spira, writing in Frequent Business Traveler, magazine claimed that it "seems to make everything sharper and clearer".[58]

While the third generation iPad generally received positive response on launch, it was soon discovered in overseas markets that the iPad 3 is incapable of LTE frequency other than those used by Verizon and AT&T (700MHz and 700/2100 MHz, respectively). As the rest of the world will be using 800MHz, 1.8GHz and 2.6GHz, the iPad will not be able to connect to LTE networks outside the US.[59][60] The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is in the process of taking Apple to court. They claim that Apple's decision to sell the tablet in Australia as the 'iPad WiFi + 4G' misled customers, as the name indicates that it will work on Australia's current 4G network.[61] Apple have responded to this by offering a full refund to all customers in Australia who purchased the 4G version of the iPad.

Many users have reported overheating with the 3rd generation iPad, especially after running 3D games. If used while plugged in, the rear of the new iPad became as much as 12 degrees hotter than an iPad 2 subjected to the same tests; while the difference unplugged was 13 degrees. Thermal imaging tests were conducted and revealed it has gotten as hot as 116 degrees Fahrenheit. At this temperature it was warm to touch but not uncomfortable when held for a brief period. [62][63][64] The claimed superiority of the A5X over the Tegra3 processor was questioned around launch time by manufacturer Nvidia; some benchmarks have since confirmed superiority in graphics performance, although the Tegra3 has greater processor performance.[65][66]

Commercial reception

The third generation iPad was released on March 16, 2012 in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.[67] It will also be released on March 23, 2012 in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Macau, Mexico, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.[68]

Demand for pre-orders were so high for the third generation iPad that later orders were quoted shipping times of "two to three weeks" after the order was placed.[69] Apple said that "customer response to the new iPad has been off the charts and the quantity available for pre-order has been purchased".[68] Despite the delayed shipping, many users are choosing to purchase the iPad online instead of waiting in line at the Apple Store.[70] Approximately 750 people waited outside the Fifth Avenue Apple Store for the release of the iPad.[71]

According to an Apple press release, three million iPads were sold in the first three days following its release.[1] Consumer demand for the 3rd generation iPad is said to be damaging sales of handheld gaming consoles. The iPad's Retina display and lower-cost games are factors that can be attributed to this trend.[72]
